We also share some photos from two special events held here in East Cobb: the first annual Public Safety Celebration (page 54) and the Pope High School’s Foundation Fundraiser (page 62). All of these East Cobbers spotlighted are our modernday Pilgrims. Many, if not most, have been transplanted to this area and are determined to help build a better world right here in East Cobb.

In honor of our annual Pet Guide special section, we asked Joy Evilsizor, Director of the Humane Society of Cobb County and her number one volunteer (and husband), Gail, to grace our front cover. The Humane Society of Cobb County (HSCC) is an independent, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) humane animal welfare charity founded in 1957. They are a no-kill shelter serving Cobb County and the surrounding area.

As the director of HSCC since 1998, Joy has been promoting responsible pet ownership, encouraging people to choose their pets from shelters, recruiting volunteers for assistance in shelter operations, and foster care. She works with Cobb County Animal Control saving animals (cats, dogs, hamsters and the occasional bird, too) from being euthanized.

Joy is also busy partnering with veterinarians and local businesses for medical services, funding, in-kind donations and sponsorships.

Joy’s “better half”, Gail, can be seen at local festivals manning their booth to raise awareness about the Humane Society’s programs, coordinating fundraisers for the nonprofit and helping “whenever needed . . . which is pretty much everyday!” says Gail.

East Cobb Teachers of the Year Honored at Chamber’s Give Our Schools A Hand Ceremony The Teacher of the Year program is designed to spotlight those dedicated to educating and changing the lives of our young people. Each year, one talented and special person is selected to be a school’s Teacher of the Year. The Cobb County and Marietta City District Teachers of the Year placed their handprints in the Teacher Walk of Honor on the Marietta Square October 2. A pep rally on October 29 kicked off the annual Give Our Schools a Hand (GOSH) week at the Roswell Street Baptist Church. This is the 25th year that the Cobb Chamber of Commerce has sponsored the GOSH special event. A salute to education in Cobb County, GOSH week brought educators, students, parents, businesses and the community together to honor education. 9th Annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Celebration Brings Cobb County Faiths Together Congregations of 8 Faiths Come Together at Temple Kol Emeth November 21

Cobb County’s community award-winning annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Celebration returns to Marietta’s Temple Kol Emeth for a ninth consecutive year. A mix of inspiring words and music sprinkled with humor, this event kicks off the Thanksgiving holiday season by giving people of all faiths the opportunity to come together and understand better the ways in which we are the same instead of focusing on our differences.

The Thanksgiving Ecumenical Celebration takes place each year on the Thursday evening prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday, which this year is Thursday, November 21 at 7pm at Temple Kol Emeth, 1415 Old Canton Road in Marietta/East Cobb County. Everyone is welcome. The celebration includes a light dessert reception afterwards at which various clergy will be available for informal conversation. This year’s service will be emceed by Rabbi Steve Lebow and Imam Amjad Taufique with special insights from Monsignor Patrick Bishop of Transfiguration Catholic Church. Speakers and presenters on the celebration will

represent Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Unitarian Universalism, and three branches of Christianity.

“The Thanksgiving Ecumenical Celebration has become an annual touchstone for people who would rather understand and relate to their neighbors of different faiths, instead of having those people and their faiths delivered to them by stereotypes and sound bites,” according to Thanksgiving Ecumenical Celebration committee chair Hal Schlenger. The Cobb County Community Relations Council awarded the annual Thanksgiving Ecumenical Celebration with their 2010 Creating Community Award, recognizing its positive impact on the life of the county.

There is no charge for parking or attendance. There will be a collection non-perishable food items for the MUST Ministries and a collection plate will be passed for Give A Gobble, an annual effort by the Women of Reform Judaism that provides Thanksgiving turkeys for needy families in Atlanta.

October marked National Farm to School Month, National School Lunch Week and National Food Day. To celebrate the food-focused month, the district’s Food and Nutrition team, led by Cynthia Downs, executive director of Cobb County School District’s Food & Nutrition Services Department, hosted a “Dig Your Food,” event last month at Tritt Elementary School. This special presentation featured Chef Mark Ainsworth of The Culinary Institute of America’s Hyde Park campus and Adam Brumberg of Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab. Both Ainsworth and Brumberg are recognized for their work in school food and lunchroom research.

Downs’ work was honored earlier this year when two members of her team were invited to participate in a first-ever event for leading school foodservice programs at The Culinary Institute of America’s San Antonio campus.

“We want our students, our parents and our administrators to better understand what we are offering our students today and the way that we’re developing our menus,” said Downs. This fall marks the second year of implementation for the new school meal rules and the first year for the new breakfast meal rules. Many parents and caregivers aren’t yet aware of how the new items stack up for flavor and to nutrition, and how they compare to favorite bag lunch options. “We’re extremely proud of the quality and selections of the foods we’re providing, which include fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy and whole grains,” continued Downs. Ms. Downs leads a team of professionals that provide meals to approximately 107,000 students each day in 110 schools.

In the real estate business since 2000, Oleg is a seasoned broker who has discovered a niche in the metro Atlanta real ss Oleg Geydman, estate market that is virtually untapped.

Owner, A Top Realty His business is a full-service real estate agency that works as a buyer’s agent only.

His website, RebateForBuyers.com, allows potential buyers to search for homes, as well as research local areas and schools. The client then previews selected homes by driving by them to check out the neighborhood and amenities in the area. Whittling the list of homes to selected ones in which he or she is interested, the client then submits this information to Geydman. At this point, Oleg becomes engaged in the process, making appointments to see the selected homes. Once a house is chosen, he will negotiate with the selling agent/seller to obtain the best deal possible for his clients. He also coordinates inspections, as well as paperwork details and deadlines.

According to Oleg, he can offer this kind of savings through technology use and client involvement. “Because of my efficient use of technology, I don’t have the high costs of most brokers,” he explains. “Rather than an expensive office, I meet my clients at a local coffee shop and pass those savings on. Also, I ask my clients to preview homes from the outside first, as well as ask them to get preapproved for a loan before I come on the scene. My clients do part of the work and, therefore, receive a percentage of my commission at closing.”

For most home purchases, the seller’s agent and the buyer’s agent split a 6-7 percent commission. The rebate that Oleg gives his clients is a percentage of his commission, which is typically 3 percent. For example, if the purchase price is $1 million, A Top Realty’s commission is 3 percent, or $30,000. Oleg gives his client 60 percent of his commission, which is $18,000, at the closing.

If the home price is $900,000 or less, the client receives a 50 percent rebate. If the home is $350,000 or less, the client receives a 35 percent rebate. A Top Realty’s commission for a $350,000 home sale would equal $10,500, with the client receiving $3,675.

“My clients can use their rebates for anything -- closing costs, furniture for the new home or a new car to park in the new garage,” says Oleg.

He points out that because he is a licensed broker, his clients receive knowledgeable representation. The one major difference between the broker license and the more common agent license is that a broker is authorized to operate his or her own business while the agent must operate under a broker’s supervision. Oleg goes on to say that this type of real estate rebate program is completely legal according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

So, you probably have heard of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. But, have you heard of Friends?

Friends is the community volunteer organization at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. There are more than 35 community Friends groups throughout the Atlanta metro area. There is even a group called girlFriends, which is designed for girls in 9th through 12th grades who want to support Children’s.

Friends groups support Children’s through volunteer opportunities, fundraising events and special service projects. Last year, the groups raised a total of $2.5 million for Children’s! They also host birthday parties for hospitalized children, and coffee and donut breaks for family members. The 2013-2014 fundraising goals of the Friends groups include a simulation lab for nurse training, support for Marcus Autism Center and the Strong4Life wellness movement which aims to curb childhood obesity.

East Cobbers are very fortunate to have a Friends group right in their own backyard: East Cobb Friends!

East Cobb Friends includes women of all ages from a variety of local neighborhoods. Over the years, the group has participated in many service projects offered by the hospital. As Friends member Susan Gerstel shares, “Having had a child in the PICU at Scottish Rite for 21 days, I saw day after day, total commitment, caring and support from the nurses, doctors, specialists and staff at the Hospital. I have found my involvement in Friends to be a personal way to “give back” in some small way, to say “thank you” for CHOA’s vital and much appreciated help.” East Cobb Friends also host a number of fundraisers, including several wine-tasting galas that attract huge crowds each year.

Perhaps you have attended one of the galas and placed a bid on an item in the silent auction!

The group recently had a speaker at one of their meetings who works in Neuro-psychology at Children’s.

The information she provided, particularly regarding sports-related concussions, was considered invaluable by her audience. Additional speakers are planned for future meetings. On November 12, several members of East Cobb Friends will be attending the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at the Cobb Energy Center to benefit Children’s.

Members are motivated to participate in Friends by the high-quality health care Children’s provides children in the Atlanta community. East Cobbers Present at National Tennis Congress

The nation’s first U.S. Tennis Congress, geared toward adult recreational tennis players, was held last month in Atlanta. USA Today dubbed the US Tennis Congress as the place for “one-stop shopping for instruction” featuring “a who’s who of experts from six continents.”

The prestigious faculty included multiple Grand Slam Champions, five former World #1 players, three of the world’s 10 dual PTR/USPTA Master Pros, even a celebrity chef- Carla Hall from ABC’s TV show, The Chew. Among this well-credentialed group were East Cobb’s own Joseph O’Dwyer, former professional player and current tennis coach at Olde Towne Athletic Club’s Ginepri Performance Tennis Academy and Lisa Jones, owner and instructor of East Cobb Yoga Sol, also based out of Olde Towne Athletic Club. Joseph O’Dwyer taught a variety of on-court sessions throughout the event,

The sold-out event brought together 250 participants who traveled to Atlanta from 32 U.S. states and several foreign countries. The goal of the Tennis Congress was to give passionate adult recreational players an unprecedented opportunity to learn from a world-class faculty about all aspects of training necessary to advance to the next level. For the first time, adult players were able to access customized, cutting-edge education on all aspects of training—technique, movement, strategy and tactics, fitness, injury prevention, nutrition, and mental conditioning. The event featured 350 workshops, seminars, and on-court classes taking place at both the Dolce Atlanta-Peachtree Conference Center and Peachtree City Tennis Center. “Think of it as a TED-style conference meets tennis super-camp,” said USTC founder P.J. Simmons.

What do I do if my dog or cat bites someone?

You will be required to make a decision about the future of your pet. Confinement is a must under the Cobb County Animal Control Ordinance. This quarantine/confinement is necessary for 10 days.

You can choose to quarantine the animal at your vet or the Cobb County Animal Control Shelter. If you do not choose to keep the animal because of the bite, you can request that the animal be put to sleep and tested for rabies. Either of these options are not pleasant, but because of the potential for a rabies exposure and/or liability on your part you must make the decision that is best for your situation.

Animal Control does not normally adopt out animals that have bitten or scratched, but every situation is considered individually.

It shall send notice of impoundment to the owner by mail.

• All animals impounded shall be kept at the Animal Control Center for a period of not less than 5 working days unless redeemed within that period.

• Any animal not redeemed shall be considered abandoned to the Animal Control Division, in which all rights of ownership shall vest in the Animal Control Division; and the owner shall have no further claim to such animal.

• The owner of any animal impounded may regain possession of the animal upon payment of applicable fees: $50 reclaim fee for the first occurrence and $100 for the second offense; $10/ each day the animal was in the pound; and, any medical fees incurred.

Marietta 9th Annual Veterans Day Parade

November 8 • 12-2:30pm North Cobb Senior Center, 4100 Highway 293, Acworth Join North Cobb American Legion Post 304 and enjoy entertainment provided by Take III Trio. The keynote speaker is Miss Micenna Brooks, a vibrant, active, intelligent 6th grader, founder and operator of Micenna’s Mission for Veterans. Her mission’s motto is, “To let all veterans know that they are loved, appreciated, and not forgotten.” She gets children and adults to make cards, letters, and drawings for veterans. Micenna is a sergeant in the Young Marines, a youth organization for children ages 8 to 18. She is the lead Youth Ambassador to the National Foundation of Patriotism and has been volunteering with the Foundation since the age of seven.

Veterans Day Program

November 11 • 10am-12pm East Cobb Senior Center, 3332 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta Celebrate all the men and women who have served in our armed services. Ken Myers will lecture on his collection of memorabilia and uniforms spanning the time period from World War I to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Many of the items in the display are accompanied by pictures of the men and women to whom they belonged. In addition there is one uniform which is not identified by a name but is labeled, “In Honor of All Those Veterans Who are Unknown by Name”.

Veterans Day Celebration

November 11 • 11am Roswell Street Baptist Church 774 Roswell Street, Marietta The 9th annual Marietta Veterans Day Parade takes place on Monday, November 11, 2013. The parade begins at 11am at Roswell Street Baptist Church, loops through Marietta Square, and ends between the new Cobb Courthouse and Marietta City Hall. The patriotic parade includes marching bands, drill teams, floats, military vehicles and veterans’ organizations. The parade will have both Marietta and Cobb County schools represented by their bands and their JROTC units. Thirty or more parade entries are anticipated along with a display of military vehicles. After the parade, spectators are invited to pay tribute to the men and women who have fought to keep Marietta and America free during a ceremony on the Square at noon.

Smyrna Veterans Day Ceremony

November 11 • 2pm Brinkley Park, 190 Legion Drive Smyrna, GA 30080 The event will feature retired Army Col. Ben Malcolm, a Korean War Special Forces veteran; and retired Army Lt. Col. Bob Lanzotti of Smyrna, a Vietnam War helicopter pilot, as speakers. Music will be by the 116th Georgia Army National Guard Band.

Kennesaw Veterans Day Luncheon

November 11 • 12 – 2 pm Ben Robertson Community Center 2753 Watts Drive, Kennesaw The City of Kennesaw will honor the service of military members past and present with a free lunch on Veterans Day. All military service members are invited to attend and no identification will be required.

Rebuild Mountain View Campaign To Hold Town Hall November 12

Registration Open for Enrichment of Life Classes

Members of the Mountain View Elementary School Foundation, its PTA and School Council recently formed the “Rebuild Mountain View Campaign.” They are working together to bring awareness to the Cobb County School Board and SPLOST committee as to why they should vote to rebuild Mountain View Elementary School with ED SPLOST IV funds. According to supporters of “Rebuild Mountain View” there are three serious building issues: health, safety and transportation. These issues are outlined below:

Registration opens for Enrichment of Life Movement (ELM) Winter Session on November 15. Classes run January 7 through February 25. The registration deadline is December 13, and is open to residents of Cobb and surrounding counties. Based out of the First United Methodist Church of Marietta, ELM is proud to celebrate in 2014, its 30th year of serving senior adults. ELM is a unique non-profit, nondenominational learning organization operated almost exclusively by Cobb County volunteers. It offers a full day of classes, a catered lunch, and scheduled lunchtime presentations for active adults age 50 and older. An array of over sixty classes will be offered on consecutive Tuesdays, from 9:30am to 3pm.

The Winter 2014 line-up includes: Acrylics, Genealogy, Loom Knitting, Mah Jongg, and Sewing Secrets to name just a few. Take a class with us and discover more about you! The registration fee is $40 per session and students may take up to three classes. A hot lunch is available for $6.50, but brown baggers are always welcome.

• Health- Independent testing conducted by GLE in September 2013 indicated poor air quality at Mountain View. Readings indicate levels of carbon dioxide in 17 locations are above OSHA & EPA guidelines. The temperature and relative humidity levels in eight hallways and two classrooms are above published guidelines. There are four classrooms that have been remediated for mold and two breezeways that are infected with significantly greater mold spore concentrations. Asthma related illnesses have increased visits to the nurse over previous years.

Approximately 70% of the main building perimeter interior walls have moisture readings above 30%.

• Safety- Students walk outside adjacent to delivery trucks and garbage trucks to get to and from the annex, kindergarten and main building via the breezeway. The school’s breezeway leaks during rain showers and does not have ventilation or HVAC system. Special needs individuals find it difficult to navigate the uneven terrain.

Students are exposed to a stream of water in the third grade hallway during periods of heavy rains. Significant flooding blocks entrance/exit to main hallway.

• Transportation- Mountain View Elementary School includes three buildings and two breezeways arranged in an unplanned, disorganized manner. Bus lanes intersect with entrance and exit lanes, car pool lines, and parking lots creating traffic flow issues especially during drop-off & pick-up times. Back-up on Sandy Plains Road in northbound lanes creates issues for emergency vehicles and non-school traffic. This traffic backs up past Fire House 14 for approximately 45 minutes every morning and afternoon.

A Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, 7pm at Mountain View Elementary School, 3448 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta/East Cobb 30066.

DINING GUIDE Recipe of the Month: Caramelized Brussels Sprouts & Cauliflower with Thai Herb Vinaigrette Submitted by Doug Turbush, Executive Chef/Owner, Seed

Warm Thanksgiving memories are often made when plates piled high with rich, delicious dishes are passed around the dinner table. Whether you stuff your stuffing with oysters or swap out turkey for Cornish hens, everyone has their own recipes for making Thanksgiving Day special, including our local chefs. EAST COBBER presents a recipe from local Chef and Owner of Seed, Doug Turbush, for our readers to try this Thanksgiving. “It is a Southeast Asian inspired flavor combination used on western ingredients. What makes it unique is that the Brussels sprouts are steamed, but then fried along with the cauliflower. They are both tossed with the basil, mint, cilantro and red onion and a sharp lime fish sauce - it’s rice vinegar-based vinaigrette and that adds a lot of depth to two vegetables that some find boring. We have converted many Brussels sprouts haters into lovers,” shares Chef Turbush.

Caramelized Brussels Sprouts & Cauliflower with Thai Herb Vinaigrette Serves 4-6

Thai Herb Vinaigrette

Cauliflower

1 head, cut into florets

Olive Oil

3 Tbsp

Salt

1 tsp

Pepper

¼ tsp

Brussels Sprouts

24 heads, cut into ¼’s, outer leaves discarded

Vegetable Oil

3 oz

Red Onion

1 ea, sliced thin

Thai Basil

24 leaves

Combine all liquids and sugar to dissolve, add

Thai Chile, minced (remove seeds if you would like - less spicy)

Fish Sauce

Preheat oven to 350. Roast the cauliflower - toss the cauliflower with the olive oil, salt and pepper.

Place on a baking sheet and roast at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Reserve Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the brussels sprouts and cook for 4 minutes.

Shock in ice water bath, then drain well and reserve.

Heat vegetable oil in a pan, add the brussels sprouts and color deep golden brown on one side, turn over and add the cauliflower. Toss the sprouts and cauliflower with the red onion, thai basil, mint, cilantro and thai herb vinaigrette.

The Great American Smokeout: November 21 The American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November each year by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By quitting — even for one day — smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life – one that can lead to reducing cancer risk.

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S., yet about 43.8 million Americans still smoke cigarettes — Nearly 1 in every 5 adults. As of 2010, there were also 13.2 million cigar smokers in the US, and 2.2 million who smoke tobacco in pipes — other dangerous and addictive forms of tobacco.

East Cobb Police Honored at First Annual Public Safety Celebration Dinner On October 9, police officers from East Cobb’s Precinct IV (and their spouses) were honored guests at the first annual Public Safety Celebration Dinner produced by the East Cobb Business Association. Held at the Olde Towne Athletic Club, the dinner was East Cobb’s way of saying thanks to its “heroes” during Public Safety Appreciation Week. Police officers also received gift cards from local restaurants, and enjoyed a raffle with such prizes as: golf outing at Indian Hills Country Club and even a Destin vacation. East Cobber Joins the Centenarian Club Jim Amatulli could pass for about 75, but he will join the centenarian club this month. He will celebrate his 100th birthday on November 24 and he has lived a full life.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Jim Amatulli was one of 8 children born to Italian immigrants.

His baby sister, now 93, is his only remaining sibling. She lives in Bethesda, Maryland.

Jim put himself through Brooklyn Polytechnic College.

He designed “blackout” ventilators for merchant ships during World War II, and worked as a sales engineer for Seaburg Elevators in New York City for most of his adult life. In 1936 he met Rita and they were married in 1942. Jim and his wife, Rita, raised their four children; Donna, Vinnie, Marianne and Richard in Pelham, New York. ss Jim Amatulli

In 1982, he and his wife, Rita moved to East Cobb to be closer to their children. Rita Amatulli, died in 2010 at

the age of 93. “She was without a doubt, the best thing that ever came into my life,” he said. Jim says that he never expected to outlive her.

Amatulli has 4 children, 10 grandchildren, 10 greatgrandchildren and a century of life to show for it. Amatulli believes staying active is what has kept him around and healthy for so long. He always participated in sports, dancing and playing bridge. Jim currently lives on his own in his East Cobb condo and works out at Cosmo Fitness two times a week.

His family says his community involvement may also have something to do with his longevity. His daughter, Donna Conklin shares, “He and my mom started ballroom dance classes at St. Ann’s Catholic Church and taught aerobics at the East Cobb Senior Center.” Jim was also involved in the Sons of Italy.

Jim Amatulli has lived through many incredible world, historical and sporting events during these last 100 years.

Growing up during the Great Depression, he learned to value his faith and family. He developed a wonderful work ethic, has great family values, and is proud to be an American. Jim Amatulli is another example of the Greatest Generation!

The Center for Children and Young Adults (CCYA) Gears Up for the Holidays

Over the past several months, The Center for Children & Young Adults (CCYA) has received considerable interest and support from the East Cobb community. This desire to help reminds me of when I first learned about The Center.

I was interviewing for a position at The Center and was surprised to find out there was an organization that helped homeless children right in my own community. From the first time I walked through the front door, I was instantly drawn to The Center’s mission and knew I could make a difference.

Many of our Board Members are proud to call Cobb County home; in fact, our Board President Maureen Lok is a fellow East Cobber. Maureen stumbled upon CCYA in 2001 as she was finishing up her course with Master Gardeners of Cobb County. She was helping to oversee The Leadership Cobb Alumni Project, where they built a gazebo and planted trees and plants in our yard. Maureen fell in love with our campus and saw the potential for a community garden, which we still have today! She then began working with the children at The Center, teaching them how to prepare the ground and plant and harvest fresh vegetables which we currently farm to table. In 2008, she joined the CCYA Board of Directors and is now our current Board President.

The Center for Children & Young Adults has been around for almost 30 years, and we could not serve our youth aged 13-21 without the help of our community! Our kids are homeless, but we give them so much more than a roof over their head, a bed to sleep in, and three meals a day. We are here to take them on their first bus ride to Chattanooga for a field trip. We are here to take them to football tryouts and hug them when they make the team (or not). We are here to take them to the airport for their first airplane ride to Oklahoma for boot camp. We are here to see them perform in their school play and laugh extra hard at the funny parts. And even beyond that, we are here to keep in touch with them after they leave us to go to college or join the military or move out into their own apartment.

I developed a close relationship with one particular young man while he lived at The Center. When he graduated to living independently in his own apartment, we kept in touch and to this day, we still do. Late one night, he called me to ask if I could come and pick him up. He had gotten off work late and missed the last bus for the day. Unfortunately, I was working a fundraiser and was unable to leave. I felt sick that I could not help him in that very moment but together, we talked about his options.

He could not walk home because the distance was too far so he would have to call a cab, even though it would be expensive. I am not sure why he missed the bus, but I don’t believe he ever missed it again. This was an important life lesson for him, but at the same time, he had the comfort of knowing he could call someone who cared. He was 21 at the time, and he still needed advice and reassurance. As a mother of a 16 year old son, I often get emotional thinking 58 November 2013

about these kids without parents and not having anyone to call because they missed the bus. Some people tell me they could not work at a children’s shelter because it would be too sad but more often I get sad thinking about what it would be like for these kids if The Center were not here.

We are continually looking for ways to improve the services we provide. We are very excited about our new Dog Therapy Program being launched in January and already have our first dog “Dallas” who has started her certified training. In addition, CCYA will be breaking ground in early 2014 for an Outdoor Recreation and Therapy Art Park, which would not be possible without the Million Matters Grant we received in October! We know the benefits of exercise, art therapy and unconditional love from the dogs will benefit our kids.

With the holidays fast approaching, we have a number of opportunities for you and your family to get involved: > Empty Nester’s Booster Club: Miss some parts of parenting but not others? You can pick and choose what you want to do – and the best part is that it’s not a full-time commitment! The first meeting will be Wednesday, November 13th at 6:30 pm on the CCYA campus. Our kids had a blast last year waiting with anticipation each night wondering what yummy treat would be delivered. This is a great way for families to come together and spread some holiday spirit. Please note – although the program is called Midnight Santa, we will take treat deliveries between 9:30 pm – 12 midnight. > Santa’s Workshop: We are looking for volunteer groups to work a shift in our Santa’s Workshop, where we sort and wrap all the presents for our children. We have almost 40 teens so we need a lot of help with this task! Shifts are 10am-12noon and 2-4pm beginning December 18th through Dec 23rd. > Sponsor a Child for Christmas: The kids at CCYA have wishes for Christmas just like other kids. If you would like to shop for one of our youth, we can help by providing a personalized wish list. This is a great project for families, groups and teambuilding with coworkers.

Greyhound Nation Goes Country For Pope High School Foundation Pope High School Foundation hosted its annual “Greyhound Nation Goes Country” fundraising event Friday, October 11th at Keegan’s Public House. The event benefited Pope High School as well as the school’s affiliated clubs and campus organizations. “This event is always a highlight with our staff and our community,” said Principal Dr. Robert Downs, “It brings all of us together for a great cause.” Established in 1999, the Pope Foundation has a history providing Pope High School with campus improvements that focus on safety, facility enhancements, technology and overall student success.

Gobble Jog Race Goes for World Record, Benefits MUST Ministries more than 11,000 runners and walkers pour into the historic Marietta Square on Thanksgiving morning for the fun and excitement of a great event for a great cause.

The proceeds now exceed $425,000 and continue to benefit MUST Ministries, one of Georgia’s recognized servant leaders.

“This year, we are adding something different and exciting,” said Special Events Coordinator Cara Reeve.

“The Gobble Jog is one of a series of races being monitored by the Guinness Book of World Records that will determine the largest number of participants in a multivenue event.” She explained that Thanksgiving races all over the country have banded together to take the world record currently held in Malaysia.

When a small group of volunteers planned the first Gobble Jog in 2003, they had no idea how quickly the event would grow into one of the best attended and most beloved holiday festivities in the South. The 1,400 original runners helped raise $29,000 that year and the Gobble Jog was literally “off and running” with a 10K, 5K, 1K and Tot Trot.

Over the next 10 years, the Gobble Jog became a tradition for thousands of people who get together with their friends and families to kick off their holiday. Today,

The event has become a wonderful, street party atmosphere with costumes, “Gobble Dogs”, family teams, corporate teams, church groups, firefighters running in full gear and lively music, Reeve explained.

“Everyone loves kicking off the holiday season at MUST’s event, seeing their friends and neighbors, getting in some exercise and seeing the festivities.”

In addition, now there is a way to help MUST even more. Participants are asked to establish a personal fund raising page and help raise more money to help feed, house, clothe and train the 34,000 clients a year who come to MUST for help and hope.
