For those of you wondering, “Wait, isn’t the parade usually in September?”— you are absolutely right. Finding a date this year turned into a bit of a calendar puzzle. Between Labor Day weekend, Rosh Hashanah, and the Cobb County School District’s fall break, every September weekend presented a conflict. Rather than compete with family vacations, religious observances, and school schedules, we decided to do something we rarely do: move the EAST COBBER Parade & Festival to October.

TRENDING IN BOOK CLUBS: BONDS OF FRIENDSHIP ARE THE SPINE OF THIS CLUB By Aileen Swartz
M
ost book clubs I’ve interviewed pause their meetings for the summer, but local book clubber Dondra keeps the pages—and the conversation— turning. For her, summer doesn’t signal a reading break; it is simply another season for gathering, sharing and discussing stories, and enjoying the company of fellow readers.
gather as couples, and after reading Up All Night, two of the husbands decided they wanted to participate and were welcomed into the discussion.
The group’s roots go back more than 26 years, when four of its members began traveling together with a member who worked as a travel agent. These women spent six years getting together to watch the television series Lost over wine and dinner. After the series finale, they weren’t ready to part ways. They all loved to read and craved a regular reason to gather, so a book club seemed like the next natural chapter. They held their first book discussion in early 2010.
For this group, the most meaningful trend may be the growing recognition that their book club has developed into much more than a literary discussion. The members know one another well, and most are older. The oldest will turn 81 this month, while the others are not far behind.
Over the years, the club has welcomed a few special guests. After reading Hardscrabble Road, the members invited author George Weinstein to join them for a discussion. “He was very interesting,” Dondra recalls.
They have intentionally kept the group to about eight members allowing for a comfortable gathering around a standard dining table.
Over the years, they have strengthened their bonds and come to appreciate how much they have to be grateful for, including the freedoms they enjoy. Trust and friendship within the group have become especially valuable as aging presents health challenges for members and their spouses.
What makes the club work is not simply the books. Each hostess chooses the book, sets the timeframe and decides how the group will gather—over brunch, lunch, dinner or in another setting. She also leads the discussion. The group has also occasionally blurred the traditional lines of a ladies’ book club. At Christmas, the members

As I learned more, I began recognizing signs in my own patients and realized that this was an important part of whole-health dentistry - looking beyond simply fixing teeth to help my patients live healthier lives. That is why we now offer convenient home sleep testing with the Medibyte, Jr, a home sleep test just like those commonly prescribed through medical and ENT practices. The process is remarkably simple. It begins with a
consultation in our office, where we discuss your sleep habits, review your Epworth Sleepiness Scale score and look for signs in your mouth that may suggest sleep-disordered breathing. If a sleep study is appropriate, you take the small device home and wear it for one or two nights while it collects important information about your breathing and sleep. Then simply bring the device back to our office. The data is reviewed by a trained technician and a medical doctor, and within about a week, we receive a detailed report. I then sit down with you - either in person or by phone - to explain the results and discuss what, if anything, should happen next. If sleep apnea is identified, we can help with treatment using a mandibular advancement device when appropriate or work alongside your physician to help you pursue other treatment options, including CPAP. Why does this matter? Untreated sleep-disordered breathing can affect much more than how rested you feel in the morning. It has been associated with cardiovascular problems, cognitive
changes and other significant health concerns, while also contributing to dental problems such as grinding, tooth wear and dry mouth. Our goal is to practice whole-health dentistry - not just to repair teeth but to recognize signs that may point to a bigger health issue and help our patients get the care they need. The convenience is especially valuable for our patients, but you do not have to be a patient of our practice to take advantage of this service. We offer home sleep studies to the public as well. Sometimes, getting a better night’s sleep and protecting your long-term health can begin with a visit to a dentist!

reat American Green installed new synthetic turf just in time for the new school year at the playground inside Cobb County Safety Village, an 8-acre educational campus where thousands of students visit each year to learn essential safety skills. Built in 2009, the facility immerses visitors in hands-on lessons covering fire, traffic and personal safety in a scaleddown town complete with sidewalks, traffic signals and small-scale buildings. Today, it is one of 27 Safety Villages in the United States and the only Safety Village in Georgia, providing a unique setting for interactive safety education. The project will be installed turf for the new playground extension with low-maintenance synthetic turf designed to withstand year-round use by visiting school groups while creating a safer, more durable space for children to learn and play. The installation reflects Great American Green’s ongoing commitment to enhancing recreational spaces that serve communities across Georgia.

EAST COBBER PARADE & FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR ITS 28TH YEAR

ne of East Cobb’s favorite traditions is back! The 28th Annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival returns on Saturday, October 3, bringing together residents for a day of community spirit, hometown pride, and family fun. The celebration begins at 10am with the EAST COBBER Parade. The one-mile route starts in front of the Princeton Lakes subdivision (1223 Johnson Ferry Road), travels south along Johnson Ferry Road, and ends on Olde Towne Parkway. Spectators can expect a festive lineup of high school marching bands, community organizations, local businesses, scout troops, athletic teams, colorful floats, classic vehicles, and plenty of surprises along the way. Known by many as East Cobb’s “candy parade,” one of the biggest highlights is the candy tossed by parade participants. Children of all ages line the streets with bags in hand, hoping to collect as many sweet treats as possible while waving to their favorite parade entries. When the parade concludes, the fun continues just down the road at the EAST COBBER Festival, beginning around 11am in the north parking lot of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church (955 Johnson Ferry Road). The festival features live entertainment, family activities, local vendors, community organizations, and a delicious selection of food from East Cobb restaurants and food trucks.

The EAST COBBER Parade will start at 10am, stepping off at 1223 Johnson Ferry Road, traveling one mile south, and ending at Olde Towne Parkway in Marietta/East Cobb. As a safety measure, the Cobb County Police Department will shut down Johnson Ferry Road – both northbound and southbound lanes – from Roswell Road to Lower Roswell Road. obb County Public Library is partnering with Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University to host the return of the Winship Mobile Prostate Cancer Screening Unit this September, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The initiative aims to eliminate barriers to healthcare by offering no-cost, on-the-go PSA blood tests, with no physical exam, for men ages 40 to 75. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis and the second leading cause of cancer deaths for men in Georgia. Winship’s mobile program seeks to raise awareness and close care gaps for men at the highest risk, including Black men. The prominent “big blue bus” will visit two Cobb County libraries from 10:30am to 3pm: • Monday, Sept. 14: Charles D. Switzer Library 266 Roswell Street, Marietta • Monday, Sept. 28: South Cobb Regional Library 805 Clay Road, Mableton Walk-ins are fully welcome at all events, and preregistration is optional. This Emory Winship program is made possible through the generous support of the Arthur M. Blank Family Foun-dation and in collaboration with the Mount Sinai Health System. The Mount Sinai Robert F. Smith Mobile Prostate Cancer Screening Unit, the first mobile clinic of its kind in the United States, launched in New York City in 2022. Overall, the Winship Cancer Institute has set the ambitious three-year goal of the program providing 10,000 tests for prostate cancer across Georgia by September 2028. The program, which launched in September 2025, surpassed the 2,000-men-tested milestone in mid-2026. “More than 100 screening events. 2,000 free screenings,” Emory Winship officials announced. “One mission: bringing prostate cancer screening closer to home.”

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY

nn Smith, 75, began her weight loss journey in 2018. Ann is a cancer survivor who experienced failures with popular diets. She changed her mindset from a diet mentality to a wellness mentality with Sparkle Wellness. Ann reached her goal weight in 2022 with a total loss of 54 pounds. Read her story here. I visited a local olive oil store to learn more about cooking with olive oil in Fall of 2018. I heard laughter and saw people trying combinations of olive oil and balsamic vinegar and making tasty salads. Sparkle Wellness was taking a class. They invited me to a meeting. I learned so much in one hour. Sparkle is a lifestyle change, not just another diet. I removed processed foods, discontinued drive-thru visits, and cooked healthy food. If you are prepared, you can create healthy meals quicker and cheaper than one drive-thru visit. Cooking is a skill I am constantly learning. The Sparkle cooking and food-prep classes have been life changing. This mindset did not happen all at once. It is a deliberate decision to make health and good habits a priority. I learned to read labels and cut through the marketing hype, finding real ingredients. I focus on purchasing and preparing healthy foods to nourish myself. Jacynta teaches us to not buy unhealthy items, so you are not making a decision every time you see your pantry. For years, I thought low-fat foods were the only way to lose weight. I was eating all the chemical-laden processed “good-for-you-foods” and feeling bloated and sluggish. I went from canola oil, artificial sweeteners, and chemicals added for taste to olive oil, natural sweetness of fruits, and healthy whole foods. I am not perfect with meal planning, preparation, and tracking. I have room for improvement. This mindset is not about perfection; it is about consistently building good habits.
I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome in 2019. It took time to regain strength and use of my legs, but I didn’t give up. I focused on what I could do daily. I was exercising with a personal trainer and working with Dr. Kelly Marcuzzi of Integral Physical Therapy. I walked three days weekly, attending cardio and strength classes. Another setback was a lung cancer diagnosis in 2025. I had incredible support from my husband, family, friends and Sparkle community. I achieved my goal of 10 squats and 10 wall push-ups when fatigue was not

debilitating. I completed treatment and the cancer is stable. I am now excited to strength train again. It will be a challenging road, but I am determined to not give up. Jacynta teaches us to show up strong, even if we do not feel like it. I hope my story will encourage someone to make wellness their priority. We only get one body and need to do everything to protect and keep it healthy. I really believe the Sparkle components of good food, exercise, community, and rest were an important part of saving my life. My mother always said, “You are wealthy if you have your health.” Now I understand. I am pragmatic and uncertain what the future holds. Cancer could return at any time. For now, I choose health and strength. Thus far, all my setbacks are bumps in the road, not the end. I am thankful for each opportunity to adjust my mindset. COBB COUNTY ELDER WINS STATEWIDE CROWN, SHINES SPOTLIGHT ON VIBRANT AGING
A
resident of A.G. Rhodes Cobb, a nonprofit nursing home in Marietta, is wearing a new crown after taking top honors in a statewide pageant celebrating the lives, experiences and contributions of Georgia’s elders. Sandra Farris was crowned 2026 Ms. Georgia Health Care Association (GHCA) on Saturday, Aug. 22, at the annual Ms. GHCA Pageant at Atlanta Evergreen Lakeside Resort in Stone Mountain. The event brought together residents representing long-term care communities from across Georgia. Farris advanced to the statewide competition after being crowned Ms. A.G. Rhodes earlier this summer. At that time, she shared a message that captures what both experiences have meant to her: “I would like for people to see us as active, giving members of society,” Farris said. At the GHCA pageant, Farris reiterated that sentiment, “Nursing homes are where we live and thrive, not where we come to die.”
The remarks of Farris, a lifelong educator, reflect why A.G. Rhodes celebrates events like these. Beyond the crowns and festivities, the pageants provide an opportunity to celebrate the vibrancy of older adults and challenge stereotypes about aging by showcasing elders’ personalities, experiences, talents and continued contributions to their communities. At the statewide pageant, contestants participated in interviews with judges before five finalists were selected. Farris ultimately received the 2026 Ms. GHCA crown. The Ms. GHCA Pageant is an annual tradition of the Georgia Health Care Association and recognizes residents of GHCA member communities for their accomplishments, experiences and continued involvement in their communities.
