October 2026

PUBLISHER’S NOTE October is always a special month in East Cobb, but this one feels especially meaningful. We kick off the month on Saturday, October 3, with the 28th Annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival. One of my favorite days of the year. There is something pretty incredible about seeing Johnson Ferry Road filled with our local schools, marching bands, cheerleaders, businesses, nonprofits, community groups and neighbors. The parade begins at 10am, followed by the festival at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. Putting on an event of this size takes months of planning and the support of so many people. To our sponsors, participants, volunteers, vendors and everyone who comes out to watch the parade and enjoy the festival: thank you. You are what makes this hometown tradition possible year after year. October also marks another milestone...EAST COBBER is celebrating its 33rd year in publication! Thirty-three years of telling the stories of the people, schools, businesses and organizations that make this community such a special place to call home. As I look through this month’s issue, I’m reminded of exactly why a community publication still matters. You’ll find stories about neighbors giving back, including volunteers improving McFarlane Nature Park, our community coming together to recognize local public safety officers, and plenty of ways to get out and enjoy East Cobb this fall. We’re also celebrating strength at every age with an inspiring story about women proving that your 80s certainly don’t have to mean slowing down. And, of course, October wouldn’t be October without a little Halloween fun. Our Halloween Happenings section is packed with pumpkin patches, festivals, Halloween hikes and plenty of opportunities to make some fall memories.

ROHAN LAW CELEBRATES ITS 15TH ANNIVERSARY By Adam Darby

Beneath the clean-cut exterior lies a “girl dad” and committed husband who devotes his time daily to making life better for every client, referral partner, community group, and neighbor. For 15 years, Rohan Law has remained a staple within the East Cobb community. Specializing in criminal defense, work accidents, and personal injury cases, the firm continues to serve residents who need legal assistance after others’ negligent actions. Owner and Founder Doug Rohan and his legal team share a strong passion for justice and make client well-being their top priority. As they celebrate their 15th anniversary, Rohan expresses gratitude for the firm’s continued growth and success.

rights. From there, he expanded his criminal defense practice to include a strong interest in serving and protecting teens. As a father of three teen girls, Rohan understands that sometimes teens can make poor decisions, and he helps them better understand the repercussions of their actions. “My objective was to educate and inform the community and ensure that these mistakes didn’t permanently impact the future of our children,” Rohan said. “However, criminal convictions can jeopardize scholarships, college applications, and military enrollment.”

“I’m proud of the resilience the firm has shown throughout the years,” Rohan said. “Most firms cannot maintain a consistent level of growth and service. So many law firms either stay small and the flame goes out or get too big to adequately serve the needs of each story that comes to us…We now have over 500 active clients and still maintain a dedication to consistent client care and education. Slow and steady growth has afforded us the ability to add staff when necessary and maintain a high quality of legal representation.”

For his strong work with teenage clients, Rohan credits nearly 15 years as an Assistant Scoutmaster in East Cobb with Troop 955 and Girls Troop 2019, believing the scouting program is an excellent way to pass on strong citizenship and community work to the next generation. Also, being an East Cobb resident for 22 years, he remains involved and engaged in the local community, building personal and professional connections with residents, businesses, and peers in law enforcement/ legal services. He continues to value the lasting connections and reputation the firm has maintained with clients and their families.

Founded in 2011, Doug Rohan created the firm to listen to and fight for each client’s

“It is very rewarding serving the East Cobb community… ‘love your neighbor’

starts with loving and serving the community around you,” Rohan said. “Our clients appreciate that we are not only trustworthy counselors, but also trustworthy neighbors…we have remained a steadfast presence who can be depended upon from your best day to your worst. Clients we represented in 2012 now have their own families and children that they have entrusted to us to advise as well. It is a huge compliment to have generations trusting us to protect them.” To celebrate 15 meaningful years, Rohan and his team plan to continue offering the same exceptional protection and advisement for at least another 15 years. With a love of serving East Cobb, Rohan Law shows no signs of slowing down for the years to come. “We understand that hiring an attorney is a big decision,” Rohan said. “We are therefore doubly committed to protecting our neighbors’ rights, livelihoods, and futures by securing the best outcome possible on every case. We want every East Cobb family to know they have a fierce protector and advocate.” For more information or to receive legal advisement and assistance, visit Rohan Law’s website at www.RohanLawPC.com, call 404-751-2439, or visit their office at 375 Northridge Road, Suite 120, Atlanta 30350.

THE WHITENING RESULTS THAT HAVE SURPRISED EVEN US Maybe you’ve tried whitening before and felt disappointed by the results. Maybe you have stubborn discoloration that over-the-counter products haven’t improved. Or perhaps you simply want a brighter smile without dealing with uncomfortable sensitivity. That’s where KOR Whitening may be different. After years of whitening teeth, we thought we had seen just about every kind of result. Then we began using KOR, and the results have genuinely surprised us! We’ve seen patients who had almost given up on whitening look in the mirror and notice a brighter smile than they had ever expected. We’ve also seen patients with deep or stubborn discoloration achieve improvements they didn’t think were possible. Even many types of tetracycline staining can respond beautifully to KOR treatment! One of the secrets is freshness. KOR’s professional whitening gel

is shipped refrigerated and arrives at our office just days before your treatment. Because the gel is kept under carefully controlled conditions, it maintains its effectiveness instead of sitting on a shelf for weeks or months. You may also appreciate the comfort KOR offers. Many people worry that whitening will leave their teeth sensitive or their gums irritated. While some sensitivity can occur with any whitening treatment, we’ve experienced fewer sensitivity concerns with KOR than with other systems. Your custom trays are designed and custom made to fit precisely, helping keep the whitening gel where it belongs - on your teeth rather than overflowing onto your gums. KOR also gives you more than a single in-office treatment. The system combines professional in-office whitening with customized take-home

trays, giving you an initial boost and a convenient way to continue and maintain your results at home. Imagine looking in the mirror and seeing a smile that appears brighter, healthier, and more confident. Imagine smiling for photos without wondering whether your teeth look dull or discolored. Imagine hearing someone say, “Your smile looks amazing,” and knowing exactly why. After years of whitening teeth, we’ve seen how exciting that moment can be for patients, and KOR has surprised even us with the results it can help deliver!

MEN’S DIVISION INTERNATIONAL PUTS MISSION INTO ACTION

V

isitors to McFarlane Nature Park have Men’s Division International (MDI) to thank for a recent improvement to one of East Cobb’s treasured green spaces. Members of the Atlanta-area men’s organization recently volunteered their time, skills and manpower to rehabilitate the restroom facility at McFarlane Nature Park, helping maintain the park for the many families, walkers and nature lovers who enjoy it throughout the year. Located off Paper Mill Road, McFarlane Nature Park is owned and protected by The Cobb Land Trust, Inc., which works to preserve the property as a natural community resource for current and future generations. The volunteer project was also highlighted in the McFarlane Nature Park newsletter, which recognized Mentor Discover Inspire—the organization behind MDI— for its work rehabilitating the facility. For MDI members, the project was about more than making repairs. It was an opportunity to put the organization’s emphasis on leadership, mentorship and community service into action. Men’s Division International, also known as Mentor Discover Inspire, is a volunteer-driven organization that encourages men to pursue personal growth while becoming stronger leaders within their families, careers and communities.

8 October 2026

Its mission is “to cause greatness by mentoring men to live with excellence and, as mature masculine leaders, create successful families, careers and communities.” That mission was put to work at McFarlane Nature Park as members rolled up their sleeves and tackled a project that will benefit everyone who visits the park. MDI currently has approximately 60 members in the Atlanta area and about 750 members nationally. Through mentorship, leadership development, training, fellowship and volunteer projects, the organization encourages its members to make service an active part of their lives. Its core values include Honor, Selflessness, Commitment, Integrity, and Training & Learning. Projects like the one at McFarlane Nature Park also demonstrate the impact local volunteer groups can have on the places that make East Cobb special. Maintaining community spaces requires not only organizations dedicated to preserving them, but also residents and volunteers willing to lend their time and talents. The Cobb Land Trust continues to protect and maintain McFarlane Nature Park, ensuring this unique natural space remains available for the community to enjoy. JOHNSON FERRY BAPTIST CHURCH TO BREAK GROUND ON NEW WORSHIP CENTER

 Renderings show the planned new worship center at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, featuring a 2,500-seat sanctuary, enhanced children’s areas, expanded gathering spaces and new outdoor community space.

J

ohnson Ferry Baptist Church will celebrate a major milestone in its Forward Vision this October as church leaders, members, and community partners gather to break ground on a new worship center on the church’s East Cobb campus. The groundbreaking marks the beginning of construction on a new facility designed to help Johnson Ferry continue serving a growing church family and the surrounding community for generations to come. “This is about much more than constructing a building,” said Clay Smith, Senior Pastor of Johnson Ferry. “It’s about creating space for people to encounter Jesus, find community, and be equipped to live on mission. We believe God has given Johnson Ferry an incredible opportunity to invest in the next generation, and this groundbreaking is an exciting step forward.” The new worship center is central to Forward, Johnson Ferry’s churchwide vision launched in October of 2025. Since the launch, the church has seen significant momentum across its ministries, including hundreds of baptisms, the launch of dozens of new home groups, and more than 1,000 people sent on short-term mission trips around the world.

Johnson Ferry has also continued investing in its local community through partnerships with schools and organizations throughout Cobb County. This summer alone, approximately 500 volunteers helped provide weekly lunches to hundreds of people in the community, including members of the Wheeler High School football program. www.eastcobber.com

The church will build the new facility on two acres of land purchased in 2025. The new addition will include a new 2,500-seat worship center, improved family drop-off, enhanced children’s space, allowing for increased security, a large concourse for gathering and connection to the rest of the campus, and larger outdoor community space with a playground, and is being designed to support both the current ministry of Johnson Ferry and anticipated growth in the years ahead. Church leaders say the groundbreaking celebrates the generosity of its people and reminds every one of its purpose. “Every gift, every commitment and every step of faith represents someone choosing to invest in what God can do through this church in the years ahead,” Smith said. “We’re grateful for where He has brought us, but we also believe some of the most exciting chapters in Johnson Ferry’s story are still ahead.” The groundbreaking ceremony will take place Wednesday, October 7 at 6:30pm on the Johnson Ferry campus at 955 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta, Georgia. About Johnson Ferry Johnson Ferry Baptist Church has served East Cobb and the greater Atlanta community for more than 40 years with a mission to help people find truth, belonging, and purpose in Jesus. Through worship gatherings, groups, ministries, community partnerships, and mission efforts locally and around the world, Johnson Ferry seeks to make disciples who make disciples.

A SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN: KEEPING YOUR PETS SAFE DURING THE FRIGHTFUL FUN By Dr. Rennia Wint, DVM

H

alloween is a favorite time of year for many families, but the sights, sounds, smells, and excitement that make the holiday fun for us can be frightening— or even dangerous—for our pets. At Just For Pets Animal Hospital we believe with a little preparation, you can help ensure Halloween is safe and stress-free for every member of your family.

KEEP CANDY OUT OF PAW’S REACH Chocolate, especially dark and baking chocolate, can be dangerous for dogs and cats. Sugar-free candy and gum may contain xylitol, which can cause serious illness in pets. Grapes and raisins can also be toxic, particularly to dogs. Don’t forget about wrappers—foil and plastic can cause choking or intestinal blockages if swallowed. Keep candy bowls, trick-or-treat bags, and children’s candy securely out of reach. Better yet, give your pet a special pet-safe treat to enjoy. CREATE A QUIET RETREAT Repeated doorbells, unfamiliar visitors, and people in costumes can overwhelm even friendly pets. Set up a quiet room away from the front door with your pet’s bed, favorite toys, fresh water, and a special treat or food puzzle. A closed door or secure baby gate can also help prevent an accidental escape. Calming music or white noise may help mask outdoor activity. COSTUMES: CUTE, BUT NOT FOR EVERY PET If you dress your pet, make sure the costume allows normal breathing, movement, and vision, fits comfortably, and contains no small pieces that could be swallowed. Introduce it gradually and supervise your pet while wearing it. If your pet seems uncomfortable or distressed, skip the costume. A festive bandana or Halloween collar can be a great alternative. WATCH THOSE DECORATIONS Candles, jack-o’-lanterns, electrical cords, fake spider webs, glow sticks, and small decorations can all pose www.eastcobber.com

risks. Keep potentially chewable, swallowable, or breakable items safely out of reach. Before decorating, consider the display from your pet’s perspective: Could they chew it, climb it, or knock it over? CHECK IDENTIFICATION AND WATCH FOR STRESS Make sure your pet’s ID tag and microchip information are current. If your dog goes outside after dark, keep them securely leashed and consider reflective gear. Watch for signs of stress such as hiding, trembling, pacing, panting, excessive barking, or attempts to escape. Some pets simply prefer a quiet evening away from the festivities—and that’s perfectly okay. IF TROUBLE HAPPENS If your pet eats chocolate, xylitol-containing candy, raisins, or another potentially dangerous substance, contact us, Just For Pets Animal Hospital at 470-481-2300 or an animal poison-control service promptly. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear. With a little planning, Halloween can be a treat—not a trick—for the whole family, including your furry companions!

LENOX SQUARE DONATES MORE THAN 50 SOCCER BALLS

M

ore than 50 soccer balls collected by Lenox Square this summer will help YMCA of Metro Atlanta youth athletes gear up for the upcoming soccer season. A portion of the donated balls will go to young players at McCleskey-East Cobb Family YMCA and Northeast Cobb Family YMCA, part of a broader effort to keep the beautiful game accessible to kids across Metro Atlanta. The donation drive was held in celebration of the international soccer tournament matches hosted in Atlanta. As the birthplace of youth soccer in the U.S., the YMCA of Metro Atlanta has shaped Atlanta soccer for decades. Support from the local community and partners such as Lenox Square allow the organization to keep that tradition alive for the next generation of players.

COBB PUBLIC HEALTH ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES AGAINST MOSQUITOES

hile fall brings some much-needed relief from Georgia’s hot and humid summers, mosquitoes can thrive during the warm days and cooler evenings of autumn, especially when they have plenty of breeding sites (i.e., sources of stagnant water) to choose from.

• Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor spas, and hot tubs. If they are not in use, keep them empty and covered (make sure water does not collect on the cover)

Since mosquitoes are capable of transmitting diseases such as the West Nile Virus and encephalitis, it is extremely important to eliminate their breeding sites and take measures to protect yourself from their bites. Here are some tips to protect yourself and reduce mosquito populations on your property:

• Eliminate weeds, tall grass, and other vegetation that provide mosquito resting places

PROTECT YOURSELF: • Wear light-colored long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks • Use EPA registered insect repellants containing DEET, IR 3535, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, picaridin, p-Menthane-3,8-diol, or 2-undecanone. Read product labels carefully and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Don’t let children apply their own insect repellant. • Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or purchase pre-treated items. • Make sure open doors and windows have tight fitting screens that are in good repair • Reduce your time outdoors when mosquitoes are most active ELIMINATING BREEDING SITES: • Dispose of cans, tires, bottles, jars, buckets, drums, pots, and any other outdoor containers that may collect water • Clean clogged gutters and make sure the water exiting from downspouts does not pond • Change the water in bird baths twice a week

• Repair leaky pipes and reposition air conditioner condensation hoses so that water doesn’t pond

• Screen or cover rain barrels • Store wheelbarrows, buckets, tubs, and barrels upside down so that water cannot accumulate inside them • Use larvicide when standing water cannot be removed • Remind neighbors to eliminate mosquito breeding sites on their property Though pesticides are used to control adult mosquitoes, they are not the most effective way to reduce their population. In Georgia, mosquitoes can be active at just about any time of the day. Pesticide spraying will only affect the mosquitoes that are out when the pesticide is applied, leaving the inactive adult population unharmed. By eliminating or larvicidng breeding sites, mosquitoes can be greatly reduced since their larvae are highly concentrated and restricted to their standing water habitat. Since mosquito control can be difficult due to vacant and unmaintained properties, as well as ponded water, the Cobb Public Health, Center for Environmental Health is available to assist in remedying these problems. If residents are having problems with mosquitoes, they can contact our Cobb County office at 770-435-7815. By working together, we can all make a positive impact on controlling mosquitoes in Cobb County.

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY By Ginger Markert-Brusa

WHO SAYS YOU CAN’T GET STRONG AT 80?

F

or Joan and Lou, strength training in their 80s has brought strength, confidence, balance, and independence—and proven that it is never too late.

Tell me about your life before strength training. What made you decide to start lifting weights in your 70s or 80s? Joan: I always enjoyed walking and hiking, but I realized it wasn’t enough to prevent bone loss, build upper-body strength, improve my balance, and help prevent falls. My mother fell outside her house one winter night in her mid-80s and couldn’t get up. Thankfully, a neighbor heard her calling for help. That experience stayed with me.

 (l–r) Joan and Lou proudly show off the results of their strength-training journeys, proving that building muscle, confidence, and strength has no age limit.

How has strength training changed your life?

Lou: Initially, I resisted strength training because I had been an avid tennis player and walker for years. I thought that was enough.

Joan: As a widow living by myself, I am able to take care of my house, do yardwork, carry my own luggage, and remain independent.

What were your biggest doubts when you first tried Sparkle Fitness? Joan: I worried about injuring myself by lifting weights that were too heavy for someone my age. After four knee replacements and arthritis, I cannot always do every move perfectly, but Jacynta always offers adaptations that get results.

Lou: I love being able to say I don’t need someone to walk me in for medical procedures. It feels great to turn down help carrying my shopping bags to the car. What do people get wrong about women in their 80s? Joan: I feel like 80 is the new 60; it’s only a number. There are still plenty of trails to explore, hikes to enjoy, and activities to share with my grandchildren. I’d rather be the oldest person on the trails than the youngest person in a nursing home.

Lou: I decided to try Sparkle Fitness because I could do it at home on Zoom. I had low expectations and started with very light or no weights. At first, I could not do many repetitions and was not crazy about it, but I stuck with it because I saw it helped my weight loss. I became proud of my progress.

Lou: I have confidence that I can get off the floor after retrieving my dog’s ball or pick myself up if I fall. I can assist friends and family instead of the reverse. I’m the oldest person in my cul-de-sac, and often the one people call for help.

Can you remember the moment you realized, “I’m stronger than I thought I could be”?

If another woman your age is wondering whether it’s too late to start, what would you say?

Joan: After about two weeks, I progressed from 10-pound to 15-pound weights for some exercises and a 35-pound weight for deadlifts and sumo squats. I really surprised myself!

Joan: You can always start with easy movements and light weights and progress from there. Go at your own pace and comfort level. Your strength, stamina, balance, and endurance can improve.

Lou: I realized how much stronger I was when my tennis opponents complimented me on how much better I was playing and how much more endurance I had. I especially enjoyed hearing younger players say they would hate admitting they had been beaten by an eighty-something-year-old.

Lou: Make tomorrow your day one of strength training. It’s not the years in your life but the life in your years that counts. It’s never too late to start living your best life. Join me in keeping the old lady out!
