I’ve been incredibly fortunate to grow up surrounded by strong women. From my own mother to the generations before her, I’ve been shaped by their guidance, their work ethic, and their ability to show up for their families while building lives of purpose. That influence is something I carry with me every day.

This month feels especially meaningful as I look at my own family, five generations of women, each playing a role in shaping the next. It is a reminder that the impact of a mother does not stop in one moment or one generation, it continues quietly and powerfully over time.

Here at EAST COBBER, I’m also lucky to work alongside an incredible group of women, many of them moms, who juggle careers, families, and community commitments, all while helping bring this magazine to life each month. Their dedication behind the scenes is a big part of what makes EAST COBBER what it is.

So as Mother’s Day approaches, we celebrate not just our own moms, but all the women in our community who show up every day with strength, heart, and purpose.

MODERN DENTAL CENTER PUTS RESTLESS NIGHTS TO BED

Quality sleep is a cornerstone of overall health and well-being. Yet for many of us, restful sleep is disrupted by breathing difficulties, frequent nighttime awakenings, or persistent snoring—often impacting not only our own health, but also that of our partner. A common underlying cause is sleep apnea, a condition that extends beyond poor sleep and is associated with serious long-term health risks, including cardiovascular disease.

At Modern Dental Center, Dr. Marianna Kovitch is addressing this widespread issue with a specialized, patient-centered approach. Board-certified in Dental Sleep Medicine by the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, Dr. Kovitch leverages her extensive clinical experience to identify how dental and airway-related factors contribute to sleep disruption.

“Many patients come to us because they’re struggling with fragmented sleep—waking frequently, snoring, or even being asked by their partner to sleep in another room,” Dr. Kovitch explains. “Interestingly, treating sleep apnea often feels like a form of couples

therapy, because it’s frequently a spouse who encourages the patient to seek care.”

The process begins with a comprehensive sleep evaluation and a home sleep test to determine whether symptoms stem from simple snoring or a more serious condition, such as obstructive sleep apnea. Based on the diagnosis, Dr. Kovitch develops a personalized treatment plan. For some patients, a custom oral appliance can gently reposition the jaw to maintain an open airway and reduce snoring. For others, collaboration with a physician for CPAP therapy may be recommended to ensure optimal air flow during sleep.

Dr. Kovitch’s interest in sleep apnea treatment started in 2012 and grew quickly from her work in restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

“I began noticing that crowns, veneers, and fillings, particularly on back teeth, were more likely to fail for patients who grind and clench often because they are struggling to breathe properly at night,” she said. “As I deepened my understanding of airway health, it transformed the way I practice dentistry. My treatments became not only more durable, but more comprehensive in addressing the root cause.”

Since opening in August 2024, Modern Dental Center has experienced rapid growth, driven by its commitment to treating the underlying causes of dental and sleep-related concerns. By focusing on airway health and individualized care, the practice helps patients achieve deeper, more restorative sleep—and wake up feeling energized.

“There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing patients who no longer snore, who feel rested, and who regain their quality of life,” Dr. Kovitch shares. “That transformation is what drives us every day.”

TRENDING IN BOOK CLUBS

ook clubs — both new and long-standing — create a space for lively, intellectual conversation, and social connection. They’re the perfect excuse to gather with friends, explore ideas, share perspectives, and broaden vocabulary through reading. This month I’m featuring Adrienne Tetreault, who runs a book club for high school parents.First up is Christine, founder of a book club in her neighborhood near Lassiter.

Aileen Swartz: How did your book club originate?

Adrienne Tetreault: This club kicked off about eight years ago as a way for Blessed Trinity Catholic High School parents to socially connect. We first met at Scooter’s coffee, but now we gather at a parent-owned book shop, Poe and Company Bookstore.

AS. How many members currently meet?

AT: We’ve kept this group open to all Blessed Trinity parents and haven’t needed to cap it yet. Attendance ranges from six to seventeen people. Parents float in and out as their children move through BT, but we have a core group of regulars.

AS: How does the club function?

AT: We announce meetings in the BT Happenings Newsletter, and provide the date, time and book title with a picture. Then we see who shows up and let the conversation flow with book club questions from Good Reads. The organizer changes every few years.

We enjoy bringing in authors at least once a year.

Sometimes they’re on tour promoting their new book, which can be tricky if we haven’t read it. I like it most when we’re familiar with the author’s work and they introduce their next book.

AS: What are you currently reading?

AT: The Briar Club which I’m loving.

AS: Do you favor a certain genre?

AT: Personally, I’m a fan of historical fiction and some thrillers.

AS: Does the group gravitate toward a genre?

AT: We mix it up across time periods and styles, but historical fiction surfaces several times a year.

Occasionally we throw in a beach read or thriller.

AS: What are some favorite books you’ve read together?

AT: This year we enjoyed Lessons in Chemistry because it focuses on a woman’s resilience. East of Eden was interesting — though long and a bit racy for our Christian group. It’s Steinbeck, so it made a good summer classic.

We also liked The First Five Winds and Broken Places.

AS. Have you experienced any book flops?

AT: Author biographies don’t tend to be popular with our group. Some of us liked the Art Thief, but others found it a bit slow.

AS: Do you vote on books?

AT: We do. At the end of each year we compile a list of suggested titles, and everyone votes for their top three.

Winners go into the rotation for the next season, spaced out by theme.

WALTON ROBOTICS EARNS SPOT AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Q

ualifying for Worlds is a monumental achievement for our team, and it’s the dream of every robotics student to compete at the highest level.

This year, we faced some of the toughest competition Georgia has ever seen—not only in engineering and robot performance, but also in presentation and outreach. Ultimately, we qualified through our district ranking, based on match performance and awards, and by earning the Engineering Inspiration Award at the State Championship. This award recognizes teams that make a meaningful impact by spreading STEM in their communities and something we’re incredibly passionate about.

A typical week during the Walton Robotics season is intense. Our season begins in early January when the FIRST Robotics Competition game is released. From that moment, we have just six weeks to design, build, and program a fully functional robot for competition. During that time, students often dedicate 30–35 hours per week, balancing demanding schoolwork while working tirelessly on our 2026 robot. At the same time, our presentation team prepares for the IMPACT Award, which honors teams that demonstrate exceptional commitment to community outreach, along with presenting for the Engineering Inspiration Award.

Being part of Walton Robotics provides students with valuable opportunities for both leadership and growth.

Every student finds their place whether in a technical or creative role and leaves with skills that extend far beyond the classroom. In my time on the team, I’ve developed abilities in 3D design, mechanical assembly, communication, and brand management. I’ve also learned how to lead projects, collaborate with sponsors, and inspire other skills that will last a lifetime.

Outreach is at the heart of our mission. In 2025 alone, our team contributed over 3,400 hours of community service, bringing our three-year total to more than 11,500 hours. For over 11 years, we’ve hosted STEM summer camps to inspire younger students, along with an annual FIRST LEGO League tournament featuring 24 teams and more than 200 elementary students. We’re also committed to supporting the next generation of women in STEM through our GirlsFIRST program, which reached over 120 local girls in 2025.

From April 29 – May 2, 2026, Walton Robotics competed at the FIRST Robotics World Championship in Houston, aiming to reach the Einstein Field—the final round where the top teams in the world compete for the title. Above all, we’re proud to represent East Cobb and grateful for the community that continues to support us. hile itching and irritation are the most noticeable effects, fleas and ticks pose far more serious health risks. They can transmit diseases that affeAllergies aren’t just a human concern—our pets can struggle with them too, especially in places like here in Georgia, where long pollen seasons, humidity, mold, and dust mites create the perfect storm for irritation. Dogs and cats can develop allergies when their immune systems overreact to everyday substances such as pollen, grass, mold, or even certain foods. The result is an uncomfortable cycle of itching, inflammation, and other health issues that can impact their overall quality of life. At Just For Pets Animal Hospital, we understand that treating allergies can be very frustrating for pet owners so do not hesitate to partner with your veterinarian or come in to see us!

Recognizing the signs of allergies is the first step toward helping your pet feel better. Skin-related symptoms are among the most common, including excessive scratching, licking, or chewing—particularly around the paws, face, and belly. Fortunately, there are several practical steps pet owners can take at home to reduce allergen exposure. Regular bathing with a gentle, hypoallergenic shampoo can help remove pollen from your pet’s coat.

After walks or outdoor play, wiping down paws and underbellies with a damp cloth or pet-safe wipes can make a noticeable difference. Keeping windows closed during high-pollen days, vacuuming frequently, and washing bedding weekly can also help create a cleaner indoor environment. Consistent flea prevention is essential as well, since flea bites can significantly worsen allergic reactions.

While these strategies can be effective, some pets require additional support. If symptoms persist or worsen, partnering with your veterinarian is key. They may recommend diagnostic testing, medications to control itching and inflammation, or even referral to a veterinary dermatologist for specialized care. IS THERE PINK IN YOUR SINK? Bleeding gums are one of the most common, and most ignored, early warning signs in dentistry. Many people assume a little pink in the sink means they brushed or flossed too hard, but in reality, healthy gums don’t bleed. More often, bleeding is your body’s response to plaque buildup along the gumline, where bacteria trigger inflammation. Left unchecked, this can progress from simple gingivitis to more serious periodontal disease.

The good news is that small daily habits make a big difference. Proper flossing technique is essential, but it’s often done incorrectly. Floss should be gently guided between the teeth, curved into a “C” shape around each tooth, and moved up and down to clean beneath the gumline - not snapped in and out.

It’s also worth noting that some very thin, waxed flosses can glide easily but may leave plaque behind, especially in patients with broader contact areas or buildup tendencies.

For those with larger spaces between teeth or “black triangles”

near the gums, traditional floss may not be enough. These areas can trap more debris and bacteria, making interproximal brushes a far more effective tool. They act like tiny bottle brushes, sweeping out plaque where floss simply can’t reach.

Equally important is how you brush. Aim your bristles at the gumline and use a gentle circular motion rather than aggressive backand-forth scrubbing. Soft bristles are best as they clean effectively without causing damage or recession. Many patients benefit from switching to an electric toothbrush, which improves consistency and technique.

High-quality options like Oral-B and Sonicare models are excellent; my personal favorite is the Oral-B iO. If you prefer a manual brush, the Butler GUM sensitive bristles toothbrush is a great choice.

Toothpaste matters too. Look for an ADA-approved formula containing fluoride to strengthen enamel and fight decay. My personal favorite toothpaste is Arm & Hammer

Peroxicare, which offers a clean feel while helping reduce bacteria.

It’s also important to recognize that your body plays a role in gum health.

Hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy or nursing, can make gums more sensitive to plaque, increasing the likelihood of bleeding. Additionally, uncontrolled medical conditions like diabetes or autoimmune diseases can significantly impact how your gums respond to bacteria.

If your gums bleed, don’t ignore it and don’t stop flossing. Instead, improve your technique and stay consistent. Healthy gums are firm, pink, and bleed-free and they’re a key foundation for a healthy smile.

udy Imig-Bush, 70, of Marietta, began her Sparkle Wellness journey sporadically but became serious in February 2025 and lost 26 pounds. Here’s her story.

I have been married to my husband, Doug, for 46 years. I worked as a paralegal and Human Resources. I subsequently stopped working and was a stay-at-home mom. Once my kids were older, I held a role with a wellknown weight loss company for roughly 14 years. After parting ways, I worked for the United Methodist church for 10 years until retiring in 2021.

When I discovered Jacynta was starting her own wellness practice, I joined. I was on and off for years. The turning point came when my doctor said I was not at a healthy weight.

My eating habits have improved. I do not keep certain foods in the house: chips, desserts, junk food. I could not control myself, so they cannot be in the house. This does not mean I don’t have them, but if I do, they are a planned indulgence. I have fruits and vegetables on hand and order a weekly delivery from Crop Drop. That helps keep my healthy eating on track.

My first step was joining and staying with the program. I needed the community support.

My second step was realizing this is a journey and not a short-term fix. I needed to get back to basics and develop a healthy lifestyle.

My third step was not giving up. There have been setbacks, but perseverance is important. I am not always perfect, but I know each day is a new beginning with new choices.

I did not grow up participating in sports or focusing on exercise. However, I know it is a key component for my weight-loss journey. I strength train at the YMCA 3 times weekly and walk or do the elliptical most days.

The biggest challenge is keeping the weight off.

I continue with ALL the healthy changes and keep reminding myself I have the tools. I have found tracking my food is key to staying on the journey. I weigh on a regular basis. I attend meetings in person or via Zoom.

Staying connected to the Sparkle community is so important.

I had to get the right mindset, telling myself I could do this and I deserve to lose weight and feel confident.

I have struggled with self-esteem issues my whole life. I started gaining weight in middle school, and negative

self-talk has been crippling at times. It is much better because I have learned my self-worth is not defined by my weight, and I can do hard things.

I have done activities I never thought I could. I participated in the Muddy Princess race, a Ragnar Relay race, the Hike Inn, and completed my first half-marathon in 10 years. I have pushed myself to meet goals and become a stronger person, believing in myself.

My life has changed for the better. Jacynta is an amazing coach and person. I have met wonderful women who have supported and loved me along the way. They are my family, and I am honored they are my friends.

FREE MOBILE PROSTATE CANCER SCREENINGS TO COBB LIBRARIES

T

he Mobile Prostate Cancer Screening team from Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute, with support from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, is partnering with Cobb County Public Library to bring free prostate cancer screenings directly into the community.

Throughout May and June, the Winship mobile screening unit will visit seven Cobb libraries, making this important health service more accessible than ever.

This initiative is designed to remove barriers to care by offering no cost, on the go PSA screenings for men ages 40 to 75. The screening is a simple blood test with no physical exam required, making it quick, convenient, and easy to fit into a busy schedule. Walk ins are welcome, and on site consultations are available.

Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer related deaths among men in Georgia. This program also focuses on raising awareness and improving access for men at higher risk, including Black men and those who may face challenges such as limited transportation or demanding work schedules.

r. Melissa Wikoff, founder of Peachtree Hearing, has been awarded the prestigious designation of Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (DFAAA) through the James F. Jerger Program of Distinction, one of the highest honors in the field of audiology.

The DFAAA designation recognizes audiologists who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, sustained contributions, and a meaningful impact on the profession beyond their clinical practice. Recipients are selected by a national review committee for their excellence across multiple areas, including leadership, clinical expertise, and community outreach.

Dr. Wikoff’s work has focused on advancing tinnitus care, expanding access to hearing healthcare, and community service. She has served in national leadership roles, including two terms on the Board of Directors of the American Tinnitus Association, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Audiology Practice Standards Organization. Through her private practice, Peachtree Hearing, Dr. Wikoff has become a recognized leader in tinnitus treatment and hearing healthcare. Her work extends beyond the clinic through national education initiatives, international collaboration, and extensive community outreach.

Among her most impactful efforts is a program she founded to provide hearing aids and ongoing care to Holocaust survivors in the Atlanta community, along with accessibility initiatives such as open-caption movie events, theater accessibility advocacy, and public education campaigns on hearing health.
