“Mr. John Zimmerman, Sr. and his family truly reflect the values of ECU. Hard work, a belief that education will lead to a better life, a dedication to service and the love of ECU immediately come to my mind when I think of their legacy. One has only to look at his service to understand his love for the university and realize his passion to build and strengthen the educational programs at his beloved alma mater. The Zimmerman scholarship and a significant contribution by the family to support the Horace Mann Centennial Scholarship reflect their love for students who attend the university. I will remember the Zimmerman family and the love that family has demonstrated for ECU all of my days.” - Dr. Bill Osborne, Professor Emeritus of Education

The Zimmerman Family
The Zimmerman family was named the 2012 Distinguished Family at the Evening of Honors and Recognition Banquet on April 27, 2012.
John W. Zimmerman, Sr. was born the tenth of twelve children in the small farming community of Lynnville, Ind. After graduating from Lynnville High School and attending college for two years at Terre Haute, he came to Oklahoma where he enrolled in East Central Normal School. During the 1915-1916 semester, he became acquainted with a lovely, vivacious graduate of the Normal Class of 1915, Clara Frank Martin.
Zimmerman was granted an Oklahoma Life Certificate in 1916 and took a job teaching at Rock Creek School, while Clara took a teaching job at Preston. They married May 27, 1917. Whenever he could, Zimmerman returned for classes at the Normal School and became the first student to complete all credits for a bachelor of arts degree. He graduated with the class of 1921 and began teaching at Ada High School. He left that position in 1922 to begin a long career with East Central State College. In 1925 John organized the Horace Mann School, a teacher training facility for elementary and junior high students, into an accredited four-year high school and assembled an excellent faculty to instruct future educators.
In 1926 John received a master of arts degree from Peabody University in Nashville, Tenn. In 1942 he joined the Education Department of East Central State College, acting as its chairman from 1942 - 1960. Under his direction, the Audio-Visual Department was added in 1943 and an extensive film library was made available to students at the college and teachers in the district.
He worked with the state department of education in establishing AV education in Oklahoma and was given a Pioneer Award by the National Department of AV in 1966. Through his efforts, East Central State College acquired a building for its students in education which housed the AV Department and its film library. He also worked with the state regents to have a master of teaching degree implemented, making East Central the first state college to have a master’s degree program.
Clara was a devoted homemaker to their four children, John W. Jr., Harry P., Clara Ruth and Phyllis Nan. They all graduated from Horace Mann and East Central. When John retired and moved to land east of Ada, they raised registered Angus cattle. It was a wonderful place for the grandchildren.

Harland and Shirley Stonecipher

“Harland and Shirley have touched my heart and touched the hearts of everyone at East Central University with their continued generosity.” John Hargrave President of ECU
Harland and Shirley Stonecipher
Harland and Shirley Stonecipher were named 2012 Distinguished Philanthropists at the Evening of Honors and Recognition Banquet on April 27, 2012.
Harland has been married to his high school sweetheart Shirley for more than 50 years and attributes his business success to Shirley for her support and guidance through leaner times.
Harland graduated from ECU in 1960 with a degree in education and a major in English. Following a brief career as a teacher and speech coach, he became an insurance salesman.
In 1969 while driving to a sales appointment, he was involved in an automobile accident that literally changed his life. The legal wrangling that ensued led to his founding of Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. Realizing he had insurance for everything except legal expenses, he decided to design and sell legal service plans that would give members access to professional legal counsel for a monthly fee. He grew the company from scratch to the point that it was ultimately listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Pre-Paid Legal Services was sold to MidOcean Partners on June 30, 2011 and is now known as Legal Shield.
The Stonecipher’s lifelong role as entrepreneurs inspired them to make a major contribution to East Central University in 2011. Their donation of $2 million to the ECU Foundation, Inc. will ensure the future of the “Harland C. Stonecipher School of Business.”
Also, as a result of the efforts and continued support of Mike Turpen, Gayle Serba and John Long, the Stoneciphers established the Nikki Stonecipher Memorial Scholarship through the ECU Foundation, Inc. in 2005 to provide full scholarships for deserving students.
Harland and Shirley have two sons. Their youngest son Brent, his wife Tina and daughter Nikki were tragically killed in a plane accident in July of 2005. The couple’s oldest son Allen lives in Centrahoma with his wife Karen and their two sons, Greg and Zane. Greg attends ECU and is a talented guitarist and Zane is a senior at Wapanucka High School and already owns his own business. The Stonecipher’s are members of Life Community Church and live in Ada.
