SEN. PADDACK SPEAKS AT COMMENCEMENT

Oklahoma State Senator Susan Paddack was named ECU’s Distinguished Alumnus and was the keynote speaker at commencement on Dec. 14. Paddack, who earned a master’s degree in secondary education from ECU and has been a champion for educational and science programs in Oklahoma, spoke about technology. Two-hundred and twenty-five students earned their bachelor’s degrees and 94 picked up master’s degrees.

SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE VISITS ECU

Oklahoma Speaker of the House T.W. Shannon spoke at a meet and greet event in November on the ECU campus. Shannon talked about the strides and successes made in the last state legislative session, including improvements to the workers’ compensation system, tax reform and infrastructure. He also discussed what was coming up in the next legislative session.

SISTER ROSEMARY GIVES SEWING LESSONS

Hundreds traveled to Ada on Nov. 21 to watch the premiere screening of Sewing Hope. After the screening audience members heard from Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe, who runs a school in Gulu, Uganda and Reggie Whitten, the documentary producer. Sewing Hope, narrated by Forest Whitaker, is the story of young women formerly abducted and used as sex slaves and child soldiers by the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army, Joseph Kony.

The screening was free and open to the public. Supporters were only asked to bring spools of thread to help Sister Rosemary help in her sewing efforts. Sister Rosemary returned to campus the following week and gave sewing lessons to students in ECU’s Family and Consumer Sciences department.

TUSKEGEE AIRMAN TO SPEAK AT DIVERSITY LECTURE ON MARCH 11

Tuskegee Airmen Col. Charles McGee will be the featured speaker in the Louise Young Diversity Lecture Series on March 11 at the Ataloa Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. Col. McGee, who was a career officer in the U.S. Air Force for 30 years, held an Air Force record of 409 fighter combat missions flown in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The Tuskegee Airmen were an African American pursuit squadron.

SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK LIVE! ON STAGE AT ECU

Schoolhouse Rock Live, based on an American programming series of animated musical educational short films (later videos) that aired on Saturday morning children’s programming on ABC, will be brought to the stage, Feb. 14-15, 7:30 p.m.

A VERY CHORALE CHRISTMAS RESCHEDULED FOR JAN. 30

‘A Very Chorale Christmas,’ scheduled for December but was postponed due to winter weather, has been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the ECU Foundation Hall of the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center. The cost is $50 per person and proceeds go toward travel expenses for the University Chorale’s tours and competitions. The University Chorale is under the direction of Dr. Steven Walker.

CHORALE PERFORMS IN D.C.

The ECU University Chorale, the campus’ touring ensemble group for the choral department, conducted three performances in Washington, D.C., in December at the 2013 National Christmas Tree Music Program on the ellipse of the White House; at the National Basilica and Shrine of St. Elizabeth Seton as part of the Gettysburg 150th Commemoration; and at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Upper Church.

RAMADAN SYMPOSIUM SCHEDULED

The Second Annual Ramadan Symposium is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. in the Estep Auditorium at ECU’s Bill S. Cole University Center. The symposium will feature four speakers. The presentations will include: Advances in Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Help Diagnose Primary Brain Tumors: A Focus on Pre-Clinical Evaluations; Visceral Pain: It’s all in your Head; and Understanding Retinal Degeneration.

LIMES LECTURE AND TIGER TANK SUCCESS

Kevin Cantrell, co-owner of Patriot Ford, spoke at the annual Leonard Limes Endowed Lecture in November. The Limes Lectureship for Entrepreneurship was created by Leonard Limes, a known philanthropist.

Prior to the lecture Ada Jobs Foundation sponsored the first Tiger Tank Pitch Competition for ECU and high school students. First place teams were Stanford Mahlatini (middle), a finance major from Zimbabwe in the college division; and Latta High School. Both received a $250 scholarship award.

EFFECTS OF LIGHT POLLUTION LECTURE

Dr. Paul Bogard, of James Madison University, presented “Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light” at an event hosted by the ECU Honors Program. Bogard talked about his findings on the effects of light pollution and selections from his latest book, The End of Night. Following the presentation, ECU’s Dr. Carl Rutledge hosted a night sky viewing with telescopes.

FORMER MOUSEKETEER VISITS CAMPUS

Lindsey Alley, who was a Mouseketeer on the AllNew Mickey Mouse Club’s fiveyear run from 1989-94, recently performed a music-comedy show at the Ataloa Theatre. Alley served as a Mouseketeer with the likes of Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. During her visit to campus she also participated in and conducted master classes with ECU students.

SPOTLIGHT ON FRANCE

Spotlight on France,” an event hosted by the ECU Global Education Department, featured a presentation by representatives from ECU’s sister institution, the University of Limoges, in Limoges, France. Music and a poetry recitation were also featured at the event.

ECKLER SPEAKS AT NOYCE COLLOQUIUM

Chris Eckler, a Robert Noyce Teaching Scholarship winner at ECU in 2011, was the presenter at ECU’s Fall 2013 Noyce Colloquium. The topic of his discussion was “Five Things Every Teacher Needs to Know about Teaching Junior High Mathematics.” Eckler obtained his bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a teacher certification last spring and is a junior high math instructor at Ada Jr. High School.

FORTNIGHTLY CLUB DONATES FUNDS

The Fortnightly Study Club of Ada disbanded its group, but brought their funds to the ECU Foundation for a scholarship to be named in honor of Hazel Linscheid, wife of former ECU President Adolph Linscheid. Because of the group’s generosity, the ECU Foundation purchased a chair with the club’s name inscribed on it in the Ataloa Theatre inside the Hallie Brown Fine Arts Center.

AT&T DONATION TO BENEFIT LEADERS

A $1,300 donation from AT&T will benefit the Vision Bank Presidential Leadership Program’s Leaders are Readers Program. Funds from the donation will be used to purchase leadership books for students in the Presidential Leadership Program.

HIGGINBOTHAM NAME LIVES ON THROUGH SCHOLARSHIPS

Because Dorothy Higginbotham’s name lives on, 30 ECU students are benefiting as $1,000 scholarship recipients for 2013-14. Sixteen of those students were recognized and 17 of Higginbotham’s family members were in attendance and honored at the Higginbotham Family Luncheon, held on Nov. 12. Higginbotham left a $1 million gift to the ECU Foundation to be applied toward scholarships. Dorothy Higginbotham, who came from a family of 10 children, was one of nine who attended and/or graduated from ECU.

WILL ROGERS PERFORMS AT LITERARY ARTS FESTIVAL

Hundreds of high school students were on campus in November for ECU’s 18th Annual Oklahoma Literary Arts Festival. Dr. Doug Watson, professor emeritus at Oklahoma Baptist University, performed as Oklahoma native and legendary cowboy Will Rogers.

VETERANS MILITARY RESOURCE ROUNDUP

The Veterans Upward Bound Program at ECU hosted a Veterans and Military Resource Roundup. The roundup featured informational speed sharing and networking with service providers in the morning and an afternoon outreach session for veterans, military service members and their families.

HUNDREDS ATTEND WOMEN’S CONFERENCE

The Third Annual Women’s Conference, Empowering Women to Live, Laugh & Learn was held on Nov. 7 at ECU. More than 350 attended the one-day event which included 15 breakout sessions.

ECU HOSTS CLASS 2A STATE FOOTBALL GAME

ECU played host to a Class 2A state semifinal football game between Millwood and Hartshorne in December at Norris Field. Millwood claimed a 24-9 victory in that contest before dropping a 36-32 decision to Davis in the championship game a week later.

BASKETBALL CLASSIC HELD AT ECU

Hundreds of fans and players attended the 37th Annual Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Girls’ High School Basketball Classic, held at ECU’s Kerr Activities Center for three days in December.

FIFTH GRADERS ATTEND TIGER FIELD TRIP

On the last day of school before the holiday break, more than 250 fifth graders watched the Tigers battle Southwestern Adventist. The event was sponsored by Patriot Ford as students from each of the schools competed for prizes in games during time outs and at halftime. The Tigers won the game, 122-62.

GAINES NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-AMERICAN

ECU football senior defensive back Fred Gaines was named to the Beyond Sports Network AllAmerican Second Team for 2013. He finished the season with 54.5 tackles, six tackles for lost yards, two interceptions and five pass breakups. Gaines and Tiger teammate Qumain Black, a junior, were also selected to Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-Super Region 3 Third Team.

STUDENTS CONSTRUCT ‘GREEN TREE’

ECU students, as part of a service learning project for an advertising/ public relations campaign class under the direction of Bruce Hartley, formulated the idea for a “Green Tree” on display at Wintersmith Park during the holidays. The students’ project was pitched to the Ada Recycling Coalition this fall. A smaller version of the tree, constructed by the ECU students, was on display at the Mabee Gereer Museum in Shawnee in November. The ARC loved the idea and had a larger version created at Wintersmith. The Ada Recycling Coalition plans to grow the idea next year in the community.

DR. STAN NNOCHIRIONYE WELCOMED BACK

Dr. Stan Nnochirionye, a professor and director of ECU’s Distance Education, was welcomed back to ECU by students, former students, faculty and friends with a reception in November. Nnochirionye took a leave of absence to undergo a liver transplant.

RUTLEDGE TO RECEIVE TOP AWARD

ECU Physics Professor Dr. Carl Rutledge will receive the 2013 David and Molly Boren Mentor Award on Jan. 15, 2014 at the State Capitol in Oklahoma City. The award, which is being presented in conjunction with National Mentoring Month, is sponsored by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence and its David and Molly Boren Initiative. The recognition ceremony will be held in the House Chambers on the fourth floor of the State Capitol Building.

ROBERTSON RECOGNIZED FOR SERVICE

ECU Professor of Human Resources Dr. Regina Robertson (center) was recognized with a plaque for her outstanding dedication to ECU students and her many years of tireless service to the Ada community during the Annual Ada Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 25. Robertson has been involved with the Community Thanksgiving Dinner since 1990 and has served as a co-sponsor or sponsor of ECU’s Human Resources Club.

OBW RECIPIENT OF NATIONAL AWARD

Oklahoma Business Week Director Stacey Bolin and Community Education Program Charlee Lanis recently attended Association for Continuing Higher Education Annual Conference and Meeting in Lexington, Kent. They were able to share the OBW success story and accept the national ACHE’s 2013 Distinguished Program: Non-Credit Award.

FORD NAMED COMMUNICATOR OF THE YEAR

ECU Director of Communications and Marketing Amy Ford was presented the prestigious Natalea Watkins Communicator of the Year Award for 2013 in November at the Oklahoma College Public Relations Association’s Fall Workshop. Ford was nominated for the award by virtue of her leadership that has had a positive influence for ECU as well as for the state system of higher education. Ford was tenth recipient of the award.

SANTA VISITS ECU

More than 60 kids participated in the Fifth Annual Photos with Santa at ECU. Kids of all ages climbed in the sleigh and told Santa their Christmas wishes.

ALPHA CHI INDUCTS 123 NEW MEMBERS

ECU’s chapter of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society inducted 123 new members.

PI SIGMA ALPHA INITIATES EIGHT

The ECU chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society initiated eight members.

STUDENTS INTERN IN WASHINGTON D.C.

Ten students from ECU’s Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society have been selected to travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the “D.C. Internship Experience,” Feb. 12-16, 2014.

DEEPAWALI FESTIVAL CELEBRATED

More than 60 members of the ECU community came together to celebrate the Deepawali Festival in November. The Deepawali Festival, a Hindu tradition, is a festival of lights that marks the victory of good over evil.

The Ada Chamber of Commerce selected ECU’s Chickasaw Business and Conference Center as the Community Impact Project of the year.

STARKEY REPRESENTS ECU DURING HIGHER ED DAY

ECU senior Talon Starkey addressed legislatures and university officials from across the state during Higher Education Day. Starkey emphasized the importance of pursuing his degree at ECU.

TUSKEGEE AIRMAN McGEE TO DELIVER DIVERSITY LECTURE ON MARCH 11

Col. Charles McGee, one of the first African-American aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces, will deliver the Sixth Annual Louise Young Diversity Lecture on Tuesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. at ECU. McGee was one of the Tuskegee Airmen. The highlydecorated McGee served for 30-plus years as a command pilot in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

SNOW DAYS!!!

2014 proved to be a unique start. With a record snowfall, ECU did not open campus on Feb. 3. The snow, however, did not stop ECU students from having fun!

FORMER OKLAHOMA FIRST LADY TOURS CBCC

EIGHTH GRADE CAREER DAY

Eighth graders from Pontotoc County attended Career Day at ECU. Congressman Tom Cole, Senator Susan Paddack and President Hargrave inspired the students. Professionals such as firefighters and veterinarians offered candid discussions about their areas of expertise.

STATE SCIENCE FAIR TO BE HELD AT ECU

Hundreds of students from across the state will compete at the state science fair on March 6 and 7 at the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center. This will be the 41st year ECU has coordinated this fair.

OSSAA DISTRICT VOCAL CONTEST

Once again high school students throughout the region took over the ECU campus. On Feb. 18 and 19 ECU hosted the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association’s District Vocal Contest.

STUDENTS HELPING IN TAX PREPARATION

ECU and the Harland C. Stonecipher School of Business are once again participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. VITA is a national program, supported by the Internal Revenue Service, designed to provide free tax assistance to individuals with basic tax returns, particularly those with low and fixed incomes. ECU students, along with other volunteers, provide the service.

ECU KELLOGG & SOVEREIGN FINANCIAL LAB TO BE FEATURED

ECU students and faculty plus owners of the Kellogg & Sovereign Consulting, LLC were recently interviewed by Rise Display to discuss their opinion of the Kellogg & Sovereign Financial Lab. The financial lab consists of an interactive Market Wall, which streams live data from stocks and bond markets with just a 20-minute delay. The board tracks the Dow and other market news as well. It provides students with the hands-on experience needed to succeed in today’s market.

COOPERATIVE TEACHER FORUM

Educators throughout the area attended the ECU Cooperative Teacher Forum held on Jan. 15.

The forum was an opportunity for area educators to share their experiences with ECU student teachers.

JIM STOVALL SPEAKS AT ECU

Jim Stovall, entrepreneur, author, humanitarian and nationally-recognized motivational speaker, shared his story “Yes, You Can!” to a packed room on Feb. 13 at ECU. He presented an amazing personal and professional story for all ages, offering a vision of what can be achieved by those who say “yes” in the face of challenge and adversity.

RAMADAN SYMPOSIUM FEATURED NEUROSCIENCE SPEAKERS

The Second Annual Dr. Raniyah Ramadan Symposium featured speakers from the neuroscience field on Jan. 30. Topics included magnetic imaging to help diagnose primary brain tumors, visceral pain and understanding retinal degeneration.

FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL BEING HELD AT ECU

February has been a time to view French movies at ECU. The first Friday feature included entertainment from Callen Clarke and his 14-year-old daughter Faith. Callen played the Persian Tar and Faith accompanied as a percussionist. This is the fourth year of the festival which is being held in association with the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

STUDENTS CELEBRATE MLK DAY

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration at ECU began with students participating in a citywide clean up, followed the next day by a reenactment of the 1963 March on Washington, a rendition of King’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech by the Tiger Speech and Debate team, and presentations of the Spirit of MLK Award and the MLK Essay Award.

ART EXHIBITION CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY

A traveling exhibition of work by living Oklahoma artists, called “24 Works on Paper,” opened on Feb. 18 and will be available for viewing until March 21 at the Pogue Art Gallery in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. The exhibition was produced as a collaboration between Individual Artists of Oklahoma (IAO) and the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition (OVAC). The exhibition is traveling the state for a full year.

COMPOSERS’ CONCERT SLATED FOR FEB. 24

Eleven composers, drawing inspirations from faraway lands, American music styles and the beginnings of spring, will be showcased at the Eighth Annual ECU Faculty, Students and Friends Composer Concert on Monday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ataloa Theatre of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

‘A VERY CHORALE CHRISTMAS’ HELD IN JANUARY

The harsh winter weather didn’t dampen the Christmas spirit. Though it was delayed from early December, ‘A Very Chorale Christmas,’ hosted by ECU’s University Chorale, was conducted on Jan. 30. Hundreds of elementary students throughout the area received a sneak peek at the performance of School House Rock Live! Young minds were exposed to tunes such as Conjunction Junction and Just a Bill The production was based on the American programming series of animated musical educational short films that aired during Saturday morning children’s programming on ABC-TV, originally from 1973-85.

ARMSTRONG RETIRES AFTER 35 YEARS

ECU had been Pamla Armstrong’s life for nearly 35 years as a student and career choice. On Friday, Jan. 31, Armstrong stepped away from that portion of her life and into retirement as ECU’s Director of Admissions and Records/Registrar. Armstrong has served under six ECU presidents (both full-time and interim), worked through gradual technological advances and had been a part of what is believed to be 77 commencement ceremonies.

DR. WALKER HONORED AS ‘EXEMPLARY TEACHER IN HIGHER EDUCATION’

Dr. Steven Walker, director of choral activities and a Linscheid Distinguished Teaching Professor at ECU, was honored as an “Exemplary Teacher in Higher Education” on Jan. 16 by the Oklahoma Music Educators Association.

ECU AUTHORS CELEBRATED DURING BOOKAPALOOZA

The Linscheid Library hosted ‘Bookapalooza,’ an event to spotlight authors from the ECU community. Those highlighted were: Communication and Performance Studies professor Dr. Kurt Edwards’ book An Actor/Preacher Prepares: Billy Graham Performs the New Revivalism, History professor Dr. Brad Clampitt’s book The Confederate Heartland: Military and Civilian Morale in the Western Confederacy and emeritus professor Dr. Davis Joyce’s book Recollections of a Hitherto Truthful Man

SUTER’S FIRST COUSIN ON U.S. MEN’S OLYMPIC HOCKEY TEAM

Sarah Suter, ECU’s Director of Student Organizations and Greek Life, is overly excited about Team USA’s quest for a men’s hockey gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She is the first cousin of Ryan Suter, an alternate team captain and a defenseman for Team USA.

ECU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SHOWS BALANCE

The Lady Tiger basketball team has performed admirably with a balanced attack through 23 games in registering a 16-7 overall record and 11-6 mark in the Great American Conference. ECU has won six of its last seven games with three contests to go.

BASKETBALL SQUAD STANDS AT 14-9

ECU, which has already clinched its first winning season since the 2007-08, is 14-9 overall and 11-6 in the Great American Conference. The Tigers have gone through 23 games (with three regular season contests to go) and three of their players are averaging in double figures.

LADY TIGER SOFTBALLERS OFF TO 8-5 START

ECU is off to an 8-5 start to open the 2014 softball season and has produced some outstanding individual efforts along the way. Brianna Nunley and Lacey Paulk have each posted 3-2 records from the pitching circle. Paulk has a 1.77 earned run average and Nunley is at 2.16. Chelsea Patterson’s .500 batting average tops the squad.

ECU BASEBALL RALLIES PAST WESLEYAN

Though the Tiger baseball team is off to a 3-7 start to the 2014 season, ECU came out victorious in its latest outing, 11-4, at Texas Wesleyan. ECU’s other two wins came in a four-game series split with Newman University (Kan.).

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

A Chinese Dragon was seen all over campus on Jan. 31. as ECU students celebrate the Chinese New Year. President Hargrave took time to pose for a photo with the group.

TUSKEGEE AIRMAN COL. MCGEE DELIVERS YOUNG DIVERSITY LECTURE

Col. Charles McGee, one of the first African American aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces, delivered ECU’s Sixth Annual Louise Young Diversity Lecture to approximately 900 attendees. McGee, the recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor, was one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American pilots who fought in World War II.

ECU HOSTS ANNUAL REG. & STATE SCIENCE FAIRS

ECU once again played host to the Regional Science Fair on Feb. 21-22 and the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair on March 6-7. State Sen. Susan Paddack was on hand for the awards ceremony. FCS CLASS MAKING DRESSES

Jan Long’s intermediate construction (sewing) class is undertaking a project called “Dress a Girl Around the World” in which the Family and Consumer Sciences class (with volunteers) are creating dresses for girls around the world, who are living in poverty. The mothers of the children say the dresses help protect their daughters from being taken and placed within the human trafficking trade. The class had a goal of making 85 dresses -- they proudly exceeded that goal!

PAYTON AND LANCE TO ADDRESS GRADUATES

ECU Spring Commencement is set for Saturday, May 10, 2014. More than 540 graduates are expected to earn their degrees this semester. Becky Gallup Payton, Regional Vice President, Human Resources, Mercy, Oklahoma Region will address the graduates at the 10 a.m. ceremony. Bill G. Lance, Jr. is the Secretary of Commerce for the Chickasaw Nation and will address the graduates at the 2 p.m. ceremony.

KXII-12 RECOGNIZED FOR PARTNERSHIP

Television station KXII-12 was recently presented the Regents’ Business Partnership Excellence Award to highlight a successful partnership between ECU and KXII. The award is designed to highlight higher education institutions and businesses to further cultivate the higher learning environment through a State Regents’ Economic Development Grant.

FATHER OF SLAIN COLUMBINE STUDENT SPEAKS ABOUT BULLYING

The Chickasaw Nation bussed hundreds of local students to the ECU campus to hear Darrell Scott, father of slain Columbine teenager Rachel Joy Scott. Darrell talked about the April 20,1999 tragedy in which he used writings and drawings from Rachel’s dairy to illustrate the need for a kinder, more compassionate nation.

STALKING RESOURCE CENTER CONDUCTS CONFERENCE ON ECU CAMPUS

Professionals from across the state attended the Stalking Resource Center Conference held on the ECU campus last month. A program of the National Center for Victims of Crime, the conference trains professionals and provides technical assistance to communities seeking to enhance their response to stalking. The SRC is committed to promoting awareness, action and advocacy.

KIWANIS CLUB PRESENTS CHECK FOR IMAGINATION LIBRARY

The money, raised by the Kiwanis Club, goes toward the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which mails books to young children, age birth to five years. ECU NIGHT HELD IN MCALESTER

‘WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES’ SET FOR APRIL 22

In conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a National Walk a Mile in her Shoes event is coming to ECU on April 22. Teams will be formed, both men and women, as they will share a pair of high heels on a relay course across campus. EYES (Empowering You and Educating Students) will have stations at each point in the race to ensure that the high heels are passed. CLASS CONDUCTS GAMES WITH DISABLED CHILDREN

were treated to a day of fun and games from Jillian McCarty’s Adapted Physical Education Class on Feb. 21 in the McBride Gymnasium. The Fitness Fun Day was designed to help children with their motor skills, cardiovascular activities and fundamental movements.

TWO ECU PROFESSORS RECOGNIZED WITH DAVINCI FELLOWSHIPS

Two ECU professors – Dr. Christine Pappas and Skye Garcia - were recognized by the DaVinci Fellowship for their creativity among Oklahoma’s higher education faculty on March 28. Pappas, professor of political science and legal studies, was honored for creating civic engagement in Ada and Garcia, professor of music, was recognized for his unique approach to composition.

ECU NAMED A CERTIFIED HEALTHY CAMPUS

ECU was recently recognized as an Oklahoma Certified Healthy Campus by the Oklahoma Turning Point Council. In order to achieve certified healthy campus status, institutions of higher learning and career technology centers made outstanding efforts and achievements in actively creating a safe and healthy environment for faculty, staff, students and visitors.

ECU, REDLANDS BASEBALL TEAMS CELEBRATE LIFE OF CHRIS LANE

The ECU and Redlands Community College baseball teams scrimmaged and celebrated the life of Chris Lane during a tribute on March 5 at ECU’s Tiger Field. Lane’s father, Peter, came all the way from Australia for the ceremony as Lane’s No. 7 jersey at ECU and No. 2 jersey at Redlands were retired.

ECU BASKETBALL PLAYERS HONORED

Three members of the ECU women’s basketball team garnered postseason awards for their efforts during the 2013-14 season. Alycea Price was named to the All-Great American Conference Second Team and Dilan Webster was named to the All-GAC honorable mention list. Ashley Robison (not pictured) was named to the all-tournament team. Three ECU men’s basketball players received GAC postseason recognition. Colby Carr was selected to the All-Great American Conference Second Team and Brandon Lucas was named an honorable mention. Henry Pwono (not pictured) was named to the alltournament team.

ECU SENIOR HEADED TO FLORIDA FOR DOCTORAL PROGRAM

ECU senior Agostina Casamento Moran, who is set to graduate in May, is headed to the University of Florida where she will have an opportunity to achieve combined master’s and doctoral degrees. There the Cordoba, Argentina native will work at the Neuromuscular Physiology Lab with a five-year full fellowship for the doctoral program, with a tuition waiver and stipend for working in the lab.

STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH DAY

Several ECU students participated in Oklahoma Undergraduate Research Day on March 7 at the University of Central Oklahoma. The event is not only a celebration of research, creative and scholarly activities, but also an opportunity for students and faculty from multiple institutions to interact with counterparts in their respective disciplines.

MAYHUE SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

Three ECU students –Lacy Phelps, Ahndria Duran-Ablett and Lauren Crudup - were the recipients of Mayhue Scholarships during Law Day on April 1. The scholarships, valued at $500 for each semester during the 2014-15 school year, are for political science and legal studies students who are planning to go to law school.

CULLUM EARNS BRAD HENRY SCHOLARSHIP

Kaylin Cullum, an ECU political science and legal studies student from Wetumka, was announced as the winner of the Brad Henry International Scholarship for 2014-15 on April 1. Cullum will attend Swansea University in Wales next spring. She is also one of only 10 nationally to be selected for the Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship Program at the University of California-Berkley this summer.

GROUP TRAVELS TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

ECU Political Science and Legal Studies students traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the first Pi Sigma Alpha Undergraduate Research Conference. Two students – Coty Dildine and Kaylin Cullum, presented research. The group visited the White House, Capitol and Library of Congress during the visit.

CONCERT SHOWCASES 11 COMPOSERS

Eleven composers, drawing inspirations from faraway lands, American music styles and the beginnings of spring, were showcased at the Eighth Annual East Central University Faculty, Students and Friends Composer Concert on Feb. 24 in the Ataloa Theatre.

HOLI FESTIVAL BRINGS COLOR TO CAMPUS

The Asian Student Association sponsored the Holi Festival of Colors on March 11 in front of the Horace Mann Building on the ECU campus. Holi is an ancient spring Hindu religious festival, also known as the festival of colors and the festival of love. Students celebrated with water and colors.

ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL DINNER

The International Student Connection Club hosted its Annual International Dinner on March 12 at the ECU Memorial Student Union Ballroom. The event included food from around the world, along with international dances and songs, along with live music.

NASA DEMONSTRATE STICK BALL

The Native American Student Association conducted a stick ball game demonstration and served hot dogs at a function on Feb. 26 on the University Center Green.

STUDENTS TAKE STAND AGAINST SLAVERY

‘Shine a Light on Slavery Day’ was observed on the ECU campus on Feb. 27. As part of the ‘End It’ movement, students wore a red ‘X’ on their hands. By doing this they were telling the world that slavery still exists and they won’t stand for. The event was conducted by Tigers Against Human Trafficking.

CHEF SPEAKS TO FCS GROUP

Robert McGehee shared his experiences as a chef and high school teacher at Ardmore during a Family and Consumer Science Department function on Feb. 28.

DISTRACTED DRIVING SIMULATORS ON CAMPUS

ECU students tested out on distracted driving simulators on March 13. Students learned what driving conditions were like whether they were impaired by alcohol or texting.

The ECU Campus Activities Board hosted a Foam Party on March 13. Several students enjoyed playing in the pool full of suds as a prespring break activity.

ECU HOSTED RUSO MEETING

ECU hosted the April 2014 Regional University System of Oklahoma Board meeting. RUSO Regents and representatives from other institutions met in the new Chickasaw Business and Conference Center for the first time.

ECU COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES

Bachelor’s degrees were awarded to 505 students and 183 more were granted master’s degrees during ECU’s two commencement ceremonies on May 10 in the Kerr Activities Center. Becky Gallup Payton and Bill Lance Jr., addressed the graduates as the keynote speakers.

GATEWAY FROM ECU TO WINTERSMITH OPENS

The City of Ada has enhanced the road from ECU to Wintersmith Park by widening the street and adding a bike lane. The new improvements allow for a brisk walk or bike ride to the nearby park for ECU residents.

PRESTIGIOUS GEORGE NIGH AWARD

Former Oklahoma Gov. George Nigh, a 1950 ECU graduate, presented the prestigious George Nigh Award to Noelle Hurt-Bryan on April 25. Regent Connie Reilly was also on hand to visit with the former governor.

LEGISLATORS READ TO YOUTH

State Rep. Todd Thomsen and State Sen. Susan Paddack read to and interacted with children at the Chickasaw Nation Child Development Center on April 11. The event was held in conjunction with ECU’s Smart Start South Central Early Childhood Program.

TEXOMA HEALTH FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANT TO ECU

Thanks to a valued partnership between two institutions and the Texoma Health Foundation, the ECU at Southeastern Nursing Department in Durant is in the process of getting a face lift. The improvements made by the $55,000 grant provided by the Texoma Health Foundation, will help accommodate 32 additional nursing students, totaling 95.

NIKKI STONECIPHER TOURNAMENT HELD

The 9th Annual Nikki Stonecipher Golf Tournament was held this month. The Stonecipher family, through this tournament, has assisted 11 ECU students in accomplishing their academic goals.

MUNTZ CENTENNIAL MUSIC ENDOWMENT

Josie Allen, ECU sophomore, is the first recipient of the Jane Muntz Centennial Music Endowment. Muntz graduated from ECU in 1940 with a music degree and is the oldest female “Golden Tiger.” Allen, a Byng High School graduate, is a sacred music major with a vocal concentration.

ANDERSON SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

ReGina Germaine, ECU junior, is the recipient of the Jerry Anderson Scholarship. The Jerry Anderson Scholarship is named in honor of the late ECU head basketball coach, who passed away in 1982.

KING RECEIVES QUIETT SCHOLARSHIP

Jessica King, a counseling major from Ada, is the recipient of the Dr. Ray Quiett Centennial Gerlach Counseling Scholarship for 2014-15. Quiett is retired from ECU and is a Distinguished Former Faculty member.

SEEWALD EARNS CHI OMEGA SCHOLARSHIP

Rachel Seewald, ECU junior, is the recipient of the Phi Theta Chi Omega Scholarship. Seewald, who attended Norman High, is a mass communication major with an emphasis on public relations.

ECU OFFERING READING PROGRAM

Future teachers at ECU are working with students this summer. Dr. Regina Smith and David L. Smith, both certified literacy specialists, are overseeing the ECU students offering reading tutoring to local youth.

ECU HOSTS MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY

ECU’s Veterans Upward Bound Program hosted Military Appreciation Day on May 15. The event featured a patriotic celebration, speeches from those who have gone and are going through the VUB Program and information tables on services provided to veterans, military service members and their families.

VETERANS PROGRAM RECEIVES LAPTOPS

ECU’s Veterans Upward Bound Program, through the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education and the State of Oklahoma, received free laptop computers for use with veterans and military-related individuals.

FIRST PLAY HELD AT WINTERSMITH PARK AMPHITHEATRE SINCE 1982

ECU and the community of Ada came together to stage Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The production was the first production of any kind to be held at the Wintersmith Park Amphitheatre since 1982. The play featured current ECU students, faculty and staff along with ECU alumni and Ada community members.

CREATIVE ETCHINGS HONOR MLK

ECU’s U.S. Politics and Mass Media class had the opportunity to teach young students about the values of Martin Luther King Jr. Those values were displayed in the form of drawings, by area fifth graders and then the drawings were etched on black tiles and unveiled in a ceremony on May 2 on the ECU campus. A total of 28 student drawings were selected for the project which will be incorporated into a community memorial honoring Dr. King.

CAREER EXPO HELD IN APRIL

More than 50 companies and graduate schools were represented during ECU’s Spring 2014 Career Expo, which was held for the first time in the ECU Foundation Hall in the new Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE EXERCISES AT ECU

Hundreds of first responders attended an emergency response exercise at ECU. The training exercises prepare for potential incidents, build relationships and test communication tactics between various emergency response agencies.

SUMMER CAMPS PLANNED ON CAMPUS

ECU hosted several camps during June and is set to host more in July including: Cheerleading Camp, July 8-11; Boys Basketball Camp, July 14-16; Girls Basketball Camp, July 21-23; Chickasaw Summer Arts Academy July 14-26.

SCISSORTAIL FESTIVAL HELD AT ECU

ECU hosted the Ninth Annual Scissortail Creative Writing Festival on April 3-5. The event featured over 50 authors, including Nathan Brown, songwriter, photographer, award-winning poet and Poet Laureate for the State of Oklahoma.

STEAMROLLER/ART WALK CONDUCTED

Art students from an ECU printmaking class participated in the Steamroller/ Art Walk on April 11. Works of art, too large for a printing press, were steamrolled for printing purposes. That evening an art walk was held on campus and included other venues located in the Arts District of Ada.

TOUCH-A-TRUCK

EVENT HELD AT ECU

Students, adults and children alike got up close and personal with a variety of vehicles, including a National Guard transport truck, garbage truck, tractor, fire truck, ambulance and police car during Touch-A-Truck, held at ECU on April 18.

CULLUM EARNS THREE MAJOR HONORS

ECU student Kaylin Cullum, a senior political science major from Wetumka, obtained three major awards this past spring. She was accepted as only one of 10 students nationally for the University of California’s Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship, was named a 2014 Brad Henry Fellow which includes an $11,000 scholarship and the opportunity to attend Swansea University in Wales next spring. She also received the Francisco-Hatchett Scholarship in Pre-Law.

FORMER ECU STUDENT EARNS RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

Former ECU student Blake Scott has earned a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program Award for 2014.

Scott is currently a graduate student in cellular and molecular medicine at the John Hopkins School of Medicine.

THOMPSON DOING INTERNSHIP IN CHINA

ECU junior Linzi Thompson, a double-major in environmental health science and chemistry, is currently in China participating in Alabama A&M’s Research Experience for Undergraduates, funded by the National Science Foundation.

ECU TEAM PLACES SECOND IN GOVERNOR’S CUP

FACULTY, STAFF RECEIVE AWARDS

Numerous ECU faculty and staff, along with retirees, were honored during the Annual Faculty and Staff Awards Recognition Banquet, including the five Teacher Excellence Award winners on April 24.

ECU HOSTS VARIETY OF SUMMER CAMPS

Hundreds of students visited ECU this summer to attend several camps. The camps included the Explorations in Computer Science and Robotics Summer Academy, Tiger Basketball Schools, Seminole Nation Diabetes Prevention and Overall Healthy Living Camp and the Chickasaw Summer Arts Academy.

ALL-SPORTS GOLF CLASSIC A SUCCESS

Champions Tour Professional and ECU alumnus, staged a clinic for the participants of the Eighth Annual Dr. Tim Green All-Sports Golf Classic held on June 23 at the Brent Bruehl Golf Course in Purcell. The event, sponsored by ECU, the ECU Foundation, Tiger Athletics and Patriot Ford, was designed to raise athletic scholarship funds.

ECU STUDENTS CAN STUDY IN GERMANY

ECU students now have the opportunity to study abroad in Germany, thanks to an agreement reached between ECU and Biberach University of Applied Sciences in Biberach, Germany. ECU students now can achieve up to 15-18 credit hours by spending a semester in Germany. This is the first time that ECU has entered an agreement with a German university.

BUSINESS MAJORS

CAN LEARN IN FRANCE

ECU business students now have the opportunity to study abroad for one semester and earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Limoges in France. A program was announced this spring in which ECU students, who have completed two years of business classes, can go to ECU’s sister institution in Limoges, France, attend classes and earn a degree from there.

UPWARD BOUND 50TH ANNIVERSARY

It is the 50th Anniversary of Upward Bound Program nationally and 48th on the ECU campus. ECU was one of the original grantees of the program which was established by the U.S. Department of Education in 1964 as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. There are currently 88 students on the ECU campus involved in the program.

STONECIPHER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ACCREDITED FOR 10 YEARS

The board of directors for the Accreditation Council for Business Schools Programs has granted ECU’s Harland C. Stonecipher School of Business continued accreditation for 10 years. “ECU has shown their commitment to teaching excellence and to the process of quality improvement by participating in the accreditation process,” said Steve Parscale, director of the ACBSP. “This reaffirmation of accreditation is evidence that ECU is committed to providing the highest quality business education for their students for the next 10 years, just as they have done since 1994.”

MUSIC DEPARTMENT EARNS ACCREDITATION

ECU’s Department of Music received confirmation of Music Program Accreditation for 10 years by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

“Accreditation can be a very arduous process, but necessary in order to portray program strengths as well as weaknesses that may need attention. All music faculty members participated in the accreditation process and did a fantastic job,” said Dr. Mark Hollingsworth, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and former Music Department Chair.

OVAA HELD ON ECU CAMPUS

The Oklahoma Victim Assistance Academy (OVAA) was held on the ECU campus in June. OVAA was an extensive week-long course of study designed to improve the quality and consistency of victim services in Oklahoma. It was open to victim advocates, service providers, law enforcement professionals and social service providers who work with crime victims.

NURSING INSTRUCTOR HECK RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS SCHOLARSHIP

Jennifer Heck, instructor of nursing at ECU, has received the first-ever University of Oklahoma College of Nursing Two-Year Family-Centered Nursing Science Predoctoral Scholarship. The award was created to support full-time doctoral education for nurses who will be committed or are already committed to careers in academia. It is specifically focused on filling a need in family-centered nursing education. Heck’s coursework begins in August. She will continue to teach half time at ECU but one of the requirements of the award is that she be a full-time student.

ROBBEN LADY TIGER ASSISTANT

Heather Robben was selected as assistant coach under new ECU head women’s basketball coach Matt Cole, it was announced in June. Robben comes to ECU from Emporia State University (Kan.), where she served as a graduate assistant the past two years, helping guide ESU to two MIAA Tournament titles and two Sweet 16 appearances at the NCAA Division II Tournament. She played one season at Emporia State, earning second-team all-conference accolades.

ECU SET TO PAINT TOWN ORANGE

TURPEN BRINGS WIT, WISDOM, HUMOR

OSRHE Chairman Regent Mike Turpen brought wit, wisdom and humor to ECU on Sept. 11 during a book review. Turpen spoke with members of the Presidential Leadership Class prior to the review. Funds were raised during the event for the Nikki Stonecipher Memorial Scholarship Fund.

TIGER KICKOFF DINNER, AUCTION HELD

A guitar autographed by country music stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert was one of the featured items up for bid at the ECU Tiger Kickoff 2014 Dinner and Live Auction on Aug. 19. ECU head football coach Tim McCarty along with two other former Tiger head coaches – Hank Walbrick and Pat O’Neal – posed with Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby and ECU President John Hargrave. RUSO Regent Connie Reilly was on hand. The event raised funds for the football program.

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGES ISSUED

In an effort to raise funds and awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), ECU President John R. Hargrave challenged the ECU student body to take the Ice Bucket Challenge after being doused with ice cold water. More than 300 students accepted that challenge.

CONGRESSMAN COLE SPEAKS AT ECU

U.S. Congressman Tom Cole spoke to members of ECU’s Political Science and Legal Studies Program and the Presidential Leadership Class on Sept. 2 in the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.

DR. CHIANG DELIVERS BOSWELL LECTURE

Dr. Shine Chiang delivered the annual Boswell Lecture on Sept. 10 in the ECU Foundation Hall. Chiang discussed China’s natural environment, international relations, economic environment and culture and education system.

STEP OUT OF THE DARKNESS EVENT HELD

The ECU and Ada communities came together for Step Out of the Darkness, a day of prevention and recovery from addiction, on Sept. 6. The event began as a prayer march, followed by a prevention and recovery rally.

COMMUNITY ATTENDS NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

Hundreds turned out for National Night Out on Aug. 5 on the ECU campus. The event is designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community.

SEMINOLE NATION DIABETES CAMP HELD

More than 40 children participated in the annual Seminole Nation Diabetes Camp held in July on the ECU campus.

SEVEN AWARDED NASA FELLOWSHIPS

Seven ECU students were awarded funding under the NASA National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program for the 20142015 academic year.

POSTOAK HEADED TO WASHINGTON D.C. AS CHILD AWARENESS AMBASSADOR

ECU student Tiffany Postoak, a legal studies and political science major from Tupelo, has been chosen as a National Child Awareness Month Ambassador. Postoak will represent the state of Oklahoma and go to Washington D.C. later this month where she will undergo training on conducting a community service project.

THOMPSON SPENDS NEARLY TWO MONTHS IN CHINA

ECU student Linzi Thompson, a senior from Sulphur, spent nearly two months of her summer vacation in China with Alabama A&M’s Research Experience for Undergraduates, funded by the National Science Foundation. Thompson’s focus was on environmental testing around Hongzi Lake and the Hui River.

NEW FACULTY, STAFF MEMBERS WELCOMED

When fall classes began at ECU for the 2014-15 academic year on Monday, Aug. 18, there were 27 new full-time faculty members.

Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity recently honored ECU President John Hargrave as one of its seven 2014 Alumni Award winners at the PIKE International Convention held July 31-Aug. 4, in Baltimore, Md.

DR. HAMBY NAMED ONE OF 50 WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OKLAHOMA

Dr. Shelley Hamby, ECU’s assistant vice president for presidential projects and planning, has been named to The Journal Record’s 2014 Fifty Women Making a Difference. Hamby will be recognized at the 2014 Journal Record Woman of the Year awards gala on Oct. 2 at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The event honors 50 female business and community leaders from across the state.

NAMED ONE OF THE FIRST AAPT FELLOWS

Dr. Karen A. Williams, an ECU physics professor, was honored as one of the first American Association of Physics Teachers Fellows during a ceremony on July 28 in Minneapolis, Minn. The fellowship is a distinct honor signifying recognition by one’s professional peers and is awarded to individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to AAPT’s mission to enhance the understanding and appreciation of physics through teaching.

ECU CONDUCTS BIKE AND HIKE EVENT

ECU hosted Bike and Hike, a bicycle ride and a walk from the ECU campus to Wintersmith Park. The event was designed to raise awareness of the new bicycling and walking path and a donation was made by the Alpha Chi National Honor Society to World Bicycle Relief, to help eradicate polio worldwide.

BOND NAMED GAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ECU junior quarterback Spencer Bond was named Great American Conference Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 339 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 134 yards and four more TDs, including an 80-yard run in ECU’s 47-40 come-from-behind home win over Southern Arkansas on Sept. 13. He was 22-of-41 passing with only one interception. As a punter he pinned SAU inside its 20 two times.

ECU TEAMS EXPERIENCE EARLY-SEASON SUCCESS

ECU Athletics has experienced early-season success with the football squad off to a 2-0 start, the men’s cross country team winning the Midwestern State Stampede and the women’s cross country squad taking second in that same event. The Lady Tigers soccer team is 2-2-1 after a 0-2 start to the season and the ECU volleyball squad notched its first victory on Saturday.

TURPEN TO SPEAK AT ECU COMMENCEMENT

Mike Turpen, chair of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and a champion for education in Oklahoma, will be the speaker at ECU’s 2014 Commencement Ceremonies at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13 in the Kerr Activities Center. Turpen is well-known for his weekly television appearances as a political analyst on “Flashpoint with Turpen and Humphreys”, which airs weekly on KFOR, channel 4, in Oklahoma City.

ECU FOUNDATION BOARD MEETS

Members of the ECU Foundation Board were on campus for their annual meeting on Oct. 28. The ECU Foundation assists students with scholarship opportunities, thanks to generous donors.

HALLIE BROWN FORD CENTER TOURS GIVEN

Dr. Brad Jessop showcases the best features at Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center to representatives from the University of Central Oklahoma and the City of Edmond. The community is exploring the possibilities of developing a similar facility.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION HELD

The Linscheid Library Federal Depository Centennial Celebration was held on Oct. 23. The event was attended by State Sen. Susan Paddack, who talked about the importance of the library being a source for obtaining government documents as a depository for the past 100 years.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AT ECU

Hundreds of high school students were on the ECU campus for various regional and state activities including the Tigerpalooza Band Contest, Little Dixie Music Contest, Chalk Art Festival and One Act Plays.

KOI ISHTO STADIUM NAMING TO BE HELD ECU will officially name its football facility, Koi Ishto (meaning “Big Cat” in the Chickasaw language) Stadium, on Saturday, Nov. 15. ECU is also recognizing the more than 100 year partnership with a Chickasaw Appreciation Day -all Chickasaw Nation Members and employees will receive free admission!

The Tigers will battle Southeastern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m.

DR. WEEMS HONORED WITH OSTA AWARD

Dr. Bruce Weems, dean of ECU’s College of Health Sciences, was honored for his service to science education in the state with the prestigious Jack Renner Award by the Oklahoma Science Teachers Association (OSTA) on Friday, Oct. 31.

ECU REGISTERS LOCAL VOTER

ECU won first place for institutions, between the sizes of 3,001 and 7,001 students, in the Oklahoma Campus Compact’s Voter Registration Drive Contest.

FALL CAREER EXPO CONDUCTED

The ECU Career Center conducted a Fall Career Expo on Oct. 1 in the ECU Foundation Hall of the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center. Recruiters from healthcare, business and finance, law enforcement, telecommunications, education, science and graduate schools were on hand.

GSA HOLDS LUNCH, HEARS SPEAKER

In honor of National Coming Out Day, ECU’s Gay-Straight Alliance conducted a lunch and talk from Paula Sophia on Oct. 9. Later that day a Marriage Equality Townhall Meeting was held in the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.

ECU student Newakis Girdley, a senior political science major from Ada, was the only university student in the country selected to attend the Women in Government’s 15th Annual Southern and 16th Annual Eastern Regional Conferences recently in New Orleans.

ART ADDED TO WELLNESS CENTER WALLS

The ECU Wellness Center now has touches of art on its walls as Lone Grove junior art student Joshua Benson created figurative murals on the walls, showing movements of the body in action and sports.
