ENROLLMENT IS UP

It is estimated that spring 2010 enrollment could be up by 7 percent as of Jan. 13! The enrollment numbers will be finalized by February.

ECU reenacts the historic 1963 March on Washington, including the delivery of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech by ECU student Jomain McKenzie. Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and members of the community walked through the campus singing and remembering King’s legacy. Many participants commented that this was the most moving experience they have had at ECU. The march was organized by ECU’s Human Diversity Committee and the CREW, ECU’s student programming board in connection with Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 18, the national holiday marking King’s birth on Jan. 15.

REP. TODD THOMSEN RECEIVES AWARD

The Council of Presidents and the Oklahoma State Regents honored State Rep. Todd Thomsen of Ada at ECU for his service to Oklahoma Higher Education.

Chancellor Glen Johnson and ECU President John Hargrave presented the 2009 Distinguished Service Award to Thomsen for his consistency in strongly advocating for higher education and the students in the district.

DARE CHRONISTER NAMED GOV. HENRY SCHOLAR

Lindsey Dare Chronister of ECU is one of seven students from Oklahoma’s regional universities named a Brad Henry International Scholar. She and the other students will spend the spring 2010 semester participating in an international study and internship program at Swansea University in Wales.

The program was established by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education in June 2008. The State Regents provide a $10,000 stipend for students selected to participate in semester-long study or research programs affiliated with Swansea University. Academic credit for these programs will be awarded by Oklahoma regional universities.

FORMER GOV. GEORGE NIGH DELIVERS FALL 2009 ADDRESS

Former Gov. George Nigh, who was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives when he was a senior at ECU, delivered the Centennial Commencement address for ECU’s December 2009 graduates.

The ceremony recognized 239 candidates for bachelor’s degrees and 93 candidates for master’s degrees.

ECU RECOGNIZES PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY

Ada Mayor Roger Cupps (left) and Public Works Director Cody Holcomb display signed drawings of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center that were presented to the City of Ada by East Central University.

The presentation was made at an Ada Public Works Appreciation Day lunch on the campus to recognize the city employees who worked in extreme conditions, including temperatures up to 140 degrees on the concrete last summer, to complete the Centennial Plaza adjacent to the fine arts center. The city originally planned to reconstruct that block of East Main Street. The Ada City Council approved ECU’s request to close that block of the street and a block of Francis east of the fine arts center and construct the plaza at a much lower cost.

VETERANS DAY

HONORING UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT LEADERS

President Hargrave announced that Dr. CJ Vires has become ECU’s associate vice president for research and advancement effective November 16.

He also expressed his appreciation for the leadership that Dr. Diane Berty provided as interim vice president for advancement.

ALUMNI BREAK WORLD RECORD

A group of ECU runners shattered a Guinness World Record in Ada New Year’s Eve, despite inclement weather.

The group of two current and eight former East Central University cross country runners ran 100 miles in eight hours, 19 minutes and 53 seconds, beating the old record by 15 minutes and 12 seconds.

The group called the event “100 Miles For 100 Years” to celebrate ECU’s centennial anniversary.

JACKSON, LSC ACADEMIC OF THE YEAR

ECU Senior Tyler Jackson was voted Lone Star Conference Cross Country Academic Runner of the Year.

Jackson, an environmental health science major from Lilburn, Ga., was one of five athletes named to the LSC All-Academic Team. To make the team, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.

ANOTHER SUCCESS

In honor of Veterans, ECU Collegiate Veterans Association hosted two flag ceremonies and a military display.

The Annual Community Thanksgiving dinner fed more than 3,000 people at the Pontotoc County Agri-Plex. The dinner is organized annually by members of the Human Resources Club at ECU. They, along with numerous volunteers throughout the community, plan the dinner, raise the funds for the food and set up and serve the meal.

ECU PRESENTS HANDEL’S ‘MESSIAH’

An ECU musical tradition was revived when the University Singers and community members performed selections from George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah.”

The community packed the HBFFAC for both performances. Dr. Steven Walker, ECU professor of music, conducted the “Messiah.”

CHI OMEGA SORORITY GIVES TO HBFFAC

Alums from the Chi Omega Sorority recently made a unique contribution to the new Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center for the Holidays. The group donated their time and money to help furnish decorations in the HBFFAC.

HIGHER EDUCATION DAY AT THE CAPITAL

President Hargrave met with several state leaders including Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Jari Askins and Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Rudolph Hargrave.

ECU administrators and Dr. Christine Pappas’ political science students also attended Higher Ed Day. The students had a rare opportunity to receive a behindthe-scenes tour of the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

ECU STUDENTS AID IN HAITI RELIEF EFFORTS

Several student organizations met to plan events to raise awareness and funds for the Haitian Relief efforts. More than $2,000 has been raised by ECU students so far.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD

Area Boy Scouts, with help from the ECU Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team and other volunteers participated in “Scouting for Food.”

Together they collected several bags of non-perishable food items and then turned the collected items over to area food banks to distribute.

Oklahoma City attorney Reggie Whitten spoke to a full house at Okemah High School. Whitten told his family’s story about substance abuse to the crowd with assistance from special guest, Reggie Smith from the San Francisco 49ers.

LOUISE YOUNG DIVERSITY LECTURE SET

The Louise Young Diversity Lecture has been scheduled for March 10 at 7 p.m in Estep.

Jane Elliott, the creator of the famous “Blue Eyes/ Brown Eyes” exercise, will give the lecture. Elliott will also conduct a training session during the day titled “The Anatomy of Prejudice.” Current and future educators are invited to attend.

SEWELL RECEIVES PATENT

Congratulations to Dr. Guy Sewell, professor of environmental health sciences, for receiving a U.S. Patent for his invention to take contaminates out of water.

WINTER 2010 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CITATION AWARDEE

Dr. Karen Williams, professor of physics at ECU, recently received the Winter 2010 American Association of Physics Teachers Distinguished Service Citation.

TWO PRESENT AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Dr. Rick Wetherill, director of continuing education and Bridget Forshay, community development coordinator, presented at the Association for Continuing Higher Education. Their topic, “Engaging Community Partnerships for Town and Gown Success: A Best Practice for Building a Local Arts District from the Ground Up,” was a great success.

15th ANNUAL HEDGEHOG AND FOX LECTURE

Dr. Bill Osborne, dean of the College of Education and Psychology gave the 15th annual Hedgehog and Fox Lecture. During his lecture, “From Here to There and Back Again - A Chinese Connection,” he spoke of his travels and his recent cultural experiences. Ten of the past 15 lecturers attended.

ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT CENTER OPENS DOORS

Directors of student programs which relocated to Faust Hall pose in the new Student Academic Engagement Center that recently opened its doors. The newly renovated spaces on the first floor now house the Writing Center, Honors Program, Service Learning Center and Engagement Center. This renovation was funded in part by the Title III Native American Voices grant. TWO ECU EMPLOYEES RECOGNIZED AT REGIONAL CONFERENCE

The annual Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs conference, “TRiO: The Audacity to Dream,” was held in Corpus Christi. During the awards banquet, Kathy Gardenhire, director of Upward Bound, and Pat Sutton, director of the McNair Scholars Program, were awarded their pins for “25 years of service” to TRiO by the acting President, Jerry Thomas.

TRIO AND GEAR UP MAKE PRESENTATION

A large group gathers to celebrate TRiO Day at ECU. Faculty, staff and students had the opportunity to learn about TRiO and GEAR UP and meet staff members.

Information tables were set up by Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science, Educational Opportunity Center, Veterans Upward Bound, McNair Scholars and Team Gear Up.

CAROLINA MAKES PRESENTATION

Michael Carolina, executive director of the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology spoke at ECU. He explained that OCAST works close with entrepreneurs and together their ultimate goal is to bring more technology related jobs to the state.

REV. THOMAS FEATURED BANQUET SPEAKER

The Rev. Darrell Thomas of San Antonio, Texas, delivered the keynote address at the Black Heritage Banquet at ECU. The event was hosted by ECU’s Association of Black Students.

MAKING THE MOST OF SPRING BREAK

Thirteen political science and legal studies students will travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in internships over spring break. They will work on Capitol Hill in Congressional offices and in private law firms. During their stay, they will meet with members from Oklahoma’s Congressional Delegation and Chickasaw Nation Ambassador Charles Blackwell.

ECU HOSTS INTERSCHOLASTIC MEET

Students from approximately 75 high schools competed in the 94th annual Interscholastic Meet. It is the oldest and largest meet in Oklahoma.

Up to 2,000 students compete annually by taking tests in 36 categories ranging from accounting to world history.

ECU HELPING FAMILIES ‘COUNTDOWN’ TO COLLEGE

Do I really need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid? What’s my Expected Family Contribution and how is it calculated? Questions like these are on the minds of many families sending students off to college next fall. That’s why ECU, in partnership with the Oklahoma Guaranteed Student Loan Program’s UCanGo2 initiative helped several families learn more about preparing, planning and paying for college.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

Shelby Sayre of Chandler, is the second recipient of the Don and Jane Kellogg Mathematics and Science Teaching Scholarship.

The scholarship was established to assist students pursuing a degree at ECU in either mathematics or science education. Dr. Don Kellogg was a professor at ECU from 1965 to 1990.

PLANNING FOR THE 2010 FOOTBALL SEASON

With an emphasis on increased competitiveness and depth, ECU head football coach Tim McCarty announced the signing of 37 players for the 2010 season.

BASEBALL RENOVATIONS UNDERWAY

Athletics just started the renovation of the inside of its baseball facility. Soon to be renovated areas include: locker room, coaches’ office, equipment room, batting cage and restrooms. Expected completion of the project is mid-spring.

ECU GOLFER PLACES SIXTH

East Central’s Zac Pool took sixth place while teammate Bryeson Lance tied for seventh as the Tigers settled for a fourth in the team standings at the Doyle Wallace Golf Classic, hosted by Henderson State University, wrapped up Tuesday at the par-72 Majestic Course of the Hot Springs Country Club.

ECU offensive guard Justin Nail was named to the 2009 Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Super Region Four Third Team.

HOLLY GAINES WINS FOUR FLUTE COMPETITIONS IN TWO WEEKS

Holly Gaines, a Wilson High School senior who is also enrolled at ECU as a student of flute instructor Juliana Overmier, has won four music competitions in two weeks.

‘A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC’

A story of love gone right, after all, was the first musical on the big stage of the Ataloa Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center

“A Little Night Music” tells the story of people who are in difficult situations romantically, but everything turns out well by the end of the show, said director Dr. Richard Groetzinger, assistant professor of communication.

Lauren Hensley of Mounds received the prestigious George Nigh Award as ECU’s top graduating senior. The $750 award is named for the former Oklahoma governor.

Representatives from the United States Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women met with Regent Connie Reilly and campus representatives at ECU to discuss the progress of the RUSO Violence Prevention Program.

ECU ALUM WENDELL GODWIN NAMED DEAN OF SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Wendell Godwin, a senior business executive who directed all sales functions in an 18-state area for a national Fortune 1000 company, has been named dean of the School of Business at ECU.

EDUCATORS HALL OF FAME INDUCTS THREE

Three educators who began their successful careers at ECU were inducted into the Gene and Evelyn Keefer Educators Hall of Fame. The inductees are Dr. Donnie Nero, president of Connors State College in Warner; Dr. Joe Parsons of Ada, retired ECU professor and administrator; and Dr. Jimmy V. Scales Sr., superintendent of Hamilton County Schools in Chattanooga, Tenn.

MASONS ESTABLISH ENDOWMENT

ECU STUDENTS STUDY ABROAD

Several ECU students, faculty, staff and members of the community had the opportunity to learn first-hand about Russia and Ukraine at the end of the spring semester.

ECU SUMMER COMMUNITY BAND

Dr. Allen Correll, band director at ECU, has organized a community band at ECU this summer. The group consists of adults who are former band members and current high school or college band students. The band will perform a concert at 3 p.m., June 27 in the Ataloa Theatre, followed by a watermelon feast at the gazebo.

Dallas artist Ron Clark’s current series, Impending Presence can be seen through July 28 at the Pogue Art Gallery in ECU’s Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. Clark’s series is on exhibit throughout the U.S.

ECU CELEBRATES EARTH DAY

Hands-on and visual demonstrations of water and environment-related issues helped students focus on the importance of water to society and local communities during the seventh Annual Ada Water Festival/Earth Day at East Central University.

Oklahoma City University’s world-renowned Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management brought highenergy, Broadway-style entertainment with two performances at the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

Sherwin Markman, who served on Lyndon B. Johnson’s White House staff from 1965 to 1968, spoke at ECU. He discussed “What President Obama Can Learn from LBJ.”

The Fourth Annual Tim Green All-Sports Golf Tournament was held at Oak Hills. ECU alum, Dr. Gil Morgan was on hand to teach a clinic. All proceeds from the event will go to support ECU athletics.

Dr. Christopher Bean, assistant professor of history and Native American studies, received the H. Bailey Carroll Award for the best article that appeared in the Texas State Historical Associations Southwestern Historical Quarterly.

Dr. Allen Correll was selected as a recipient of the 2009 Provost’s Ph.D. Dissertation Award at the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Carol Bridges is the recipient of the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. This is the most prestigious and distinguished award given to professional social workers in Oklahoma by the largest professional organization representing social workers.

ECU ALUM PROMOTED TO GENERAL

Gen. George W. Casey Jr. (left) promotes Lt. Gen. James D. Thurman to general at the U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort McPherson, Ga. He was accompanied by his wife Dee. The Thurmans are natives of Marietta. Gen. Thurman earned his commission in 1975 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps while attending ECU.

TELEVISION STUDIO DEDICATION

An overflow crowd packed the new William C. Thrash Television Studio this month for the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony. During the dedication Bill and Billie Thrash and the Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation were honored for their contributions for the studio and equipment.

ECU ISSUES NEW ECU TIGER CARDS

All ECU students will receive the ECU Tiger Card or the debit card that will be necessary for students to receive any refunds, including financial aid and other student disbursements.

The new system will cut both the time students have to wait for refunds and the university’s costs of processing refunds and printing and handing out checks.

ECU RECOGNIZED BY ADA JOBS FOUNDATION

At the Ada Jobs Foundation Business and Industry Awards Ceremony and Banquet, ECU was named the “Large Employer of the Year.” Dr. Steve Turner was awarded the “Economic Development Leader of the Year for 2010.”

CAMPS, CAMPS AND MORE CAMPS

From math & science to cheerleading, from Seminole to Chickasaw - ECU hosted numerous camps this summer.

ECU INCREASES TUITION

The OSRHE have approved a 5 percent increase in tuition and mandatory fees at ECU for the 2010-11 school year.

The increase will average $7.03 per credit hour for undergraduate students and $8.55 per credit hour for graduate students.

For a typical 15-hour semester, undergraduates will face an additional $105.45 in costs. Graduate students taking 12 hours will be looking at an additional $102.60 in costs.

ECU’s increase is the lowest of the six universities in the Regional University System of Oklahoma.

ECU WINS FIVE AWARDS FROM OKLAHOMA STATE COLLEGE PUBLIC RELATIONS ASSOC.

The Communications & Marketing Department and Athletics Department won five awards for their work from the Oklahoma College Public Relations Association. The highly competitive contest drew 405 entries from most of the state’s public and private colleges and universities.

ECU won first place in the Bright Idea category with its “Learn About ECU’s New Debit Card and Win $20” promotion. Brian Johnson, won third place for his story, “ECU softball senior reaches postseason for first, only time.” Webmaster Ryan Wetherill, with input from faculty, staff and students, redesigned ECU’s website and won third place in Web Design.

Jill Frye won second place in Newswriting for “Overflow Crowd Hears Whitten, Panel Discuss Effects of Addictions.” Frye also won an honorable mention award for a feature story under 1,000 words. “Marriage Proposal During Centennial Show Surprises Performer.”

Amy Ford also was elected president of OCPRA for the 2010-11 year.

DICUS ACCOUNTING SCHOLARSHIP

Ten ECU students were awarded $1,000 Dicus Accounting Scholarships this summer. They were funded by proceeds raised by the 2009 Mike and Leslie Dicus Memorial Golf Tournament that benefited the ECU Foundation, Inc.

Leslie Dicus taught at ECU for a short time and was chief financial officer for an Ada company when she died in an auto accident in 2001 at age 31. Only a few months later, her husband, Mike Dicus, son of Ann and Jim Dicus, was diagnosed with cancer and died in June 2002 at age 30. Both were certified public accountants who met while working in Dallas.

STAFFORD CENTENNIAL FINE ARTS ENDOWMENT

ECU Foundation, Inc., is proud to announce the establishment of the Donald G. Stafford Centennial Scholarship created by his sons Michael Stafford, D.O., Robert Stafford and Joel Stafford.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student pursuing a degree in science or science education who exhibits the character of Dr. Stafford.

Dr. Stafford taught at ECU from 1961 until his retirement in 1995.

OLIVER CENTENNIAL FINE ARTS ENDOWMENT

Expressing their thanks to Dr. Clarence Oliver for the $15,000 Vinita June (Shirley) Oliver Centennial Fine Arts Endowment are Phyllis Kunze, executive director of the ECU Foundation and Dr. Gerald Williamson, advancement officer.

Vinita was an ECU graduate trained as a classical pianist when she passed away about a year ago. The purpose of the endowment will be to provide financial support for fine arts activities at the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center and other East Central University facilities.

Folds of Honor scholarships go only to children and spouses of military servicemen and women who were killed or disabled while serving their country.

LONG-TIME FRIEND OF HIGHER EDUCATION FILLS ADVANCEMENT POSITION

Dr. William R. (Rudy) Lewis has been named acting director of university advancement at ECU.

Lewis has been in higher education for most of his professional career, beginning in the 1970s when he was dean of students at ECU.

Since then, he has worked to enhance the lives of students at the University of Nebraska, University of Hawaii system and North Dakota State University.

RETURNS

Dr. Shelley Ross Hamby, director of the Valley View Foundation at Valley View Regional Hospital, will become assistant to President Hargrave on Sept. 1.

Hamby will take over the duties of his assistant, Martha Skinner, who will retire Aug. 31.

“It will be very sad to lose Martha Skinner,” Hargrave said. “She has worked for four ECU presidents and two interim presidents and I’m sure none of us would have gotten very far without her. Everyone on campus relies on her for some kind of advice or information. We wish her a wonderful retirement.”

CLASSES BEGIN

ECU SMASHES ENROLLMENT RECORD

ECU has a record enrollment this semester with 4,893 students, an increase of 6.3 percent over last fall.

This is also the highest enrollment in ECU’s history. Residential housing is almost at 100 percent occupancy.

These numbers made the Welcome Week festivities at ECU extra special. President Hargrave enjoyed helping the Zeta Pi Lambda Car Bash fund raiser during the annual block party. Local businesses and organizations participated in the Howdy Fair by handing out everything from toilet paper to Raman Noodles.

HORACE MANN RECEIVES FACELIFT

Newly remodeled classrooms inside the Horace Mann Building on ECU’s campus await students before the fall semester began Aug. 16. Construction crews worked throughout the summer to complete the renovation. In addition to remodeling the classrooms and adding new smartroom technology, new air conditioning fan coil units were added to the entire building. The majority of the funds for the project were provided by a Native American Voices Project grant through the U.S. Department of Education’s Native AmericanServing Non-Tribal Institutions Program.

MOTORCYCLE ART EXPO

In a joint effort with the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce, ECU will host the Motorcycle Art Expo. More than 60 antique bikes will take a break at ECU during their race across the U.S.

ECU students have really taken ownership in this event. As part of ECU’s Sculpture II class, Mary Coon taps a motorcycle part into place to make a one-of-a-kind trophy that will be awarded to the motorcycle and tattoo winners on Sept. 19. ECU student Ryan Ringle designed the logo and the Motorcycle and Tattoo Contest was organized by ECU student Jeremy Coates.

MALAN TO PERFORM IN ADA

Concert pianist Petronel Malan will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 16 at the Ada Arts & Heritage Center, sponsored by the ECU Music Department. Malan also will conduct a master class for ECU piano majors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Ataloa Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. Both are free and open to the public.

INDIGENOUS RIGHTS ACTIVIST DELIVERING

ROTHBAUM LECTURE AT ECU

Walter Echo-Hawk, a noted Native American lawyer, indigenous rights activist and author, will deliver the Julian J. Rothbaum Distinguished Lecture in Public Affairs at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 in the Ataloa Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

The free lecture also will mark the university’s annual observance of Constitution Day, the day that commemorates Sept. 17, 1789, when the final draft of the U.S. Constitution was signed by members of the Constitutional Convention.

ETHICS WORKSHOP TO BE HELD

The “Ethics in Work and Life – Living a Life Worth Living” workshop will be held Oct. 5, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. in the Estep Multimedia Center in the Bill S. Cole University Center.

Michael A. Crawford, CPA will conduct the presentation. Crawford is the chairman emeritus of Crawford & Associates and has more than 32 years of experience working in the practice area of state and local government accounting and auditing. He graduated from ECU in 1977. The workshop is sponsored by the Oscar L. Parker Center for Advancement of Ethical Standards in Business and Society.

ART SUPPLY STORE OPENS IN ARTS DISTRICT

The first business in the new East Main Enterprise and Incubator opened last month at 808 E. Main in the Arts District of Ada.

Red Earth Art Supply, the only local retailer of fine art supplies, was ready for art students’ first day of classes at ECU as well as artists in the area, said owner Erin Wetherill.

An artist herself, Wetherill said she will focus first on supplies for art classes, then build to a full line and range of products. She plans to carry supplies requested by artists.

ECU STUDENT INTERN, SPACE SCIENTIST SPEAKING AT NASA DAY

Kristy Watson of Pauls Valley, an ECU senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in both cartography (with a geotechniques concentration) and biology, will give a presentation Sept. 21 about her experiences as a summer intern at the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif.

Her presentation will be part of a larger event highlighting the importance of NASA on ECU’s campus and will kick off the College of Health and Sciences Student Leadership and Lecture Series at 3:30 p.m. in the Estep Multimedia Center in the Bill S. Cole University Center.

BRANDON WHITTEN INSTITUTE FOR ADDICTION & RECOVERY

The Brandon Whitten Institute on the ECU campus is one step closer to reality. The Institute’s mission is to strengthen Oklahoma’s capacity to assist individuals, families and communities in their recovery from addiction through collaboration and integration of academic and community resources.

NASA NATIONAL SPACE GRANT

Sixteen ECU students have been awarded funding under the NASA National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program for the 2010-11 academic year.

The awards are competitive and applications are reviewed by a committee on campus. Awards are in the form of scholarship and research stipends and range from $350 to $2,000 for the academic year.

COWGER SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED

Smith, one of Cowger’s students, encouraged her parents, Wilburn (far left) and Carol Smith (right) of Ada, to establish the scholarship in his honor. It will be awarded this academic year to an ECU junior or senior performing at a high academic level with a major or minor in Native American Studies. Cowger, an ECU professor of history, holds the Chickasaw Nation Endowed Chair and is the director of the Native American Studies Program.

Prior to the beginning of the football season, President Hargrave let the football team know that the university is behind them. During the first home game the message was reinforced as the stands were packed and school spirit was at an all-time high.

SMITH NAMED LSC NORTH DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ECU cornerback Dontae Smith was named Lone Star Conference North Defensive Player of the Week, Sept. 13 after his performance Saturday in the Tiger’s 20-7 home loss to sixth-ranked Texas A&M Kingsville. Smith a junior from Deland, Fla., intercepted two passes which led to 77 yards in returns (one 72-yarder). He led ECU with nine tackles, including seven solo stops, and had a tackle for a lost yard.

ECU POLICE CHIEF ATTENDS INSTITUTE ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Bert Miller, chief of ECU’s Police Department, was one of 24 law enforcement executives from across the country selected to participate in a National Campus Law Enforcement Leadership Institute on Violence Against Women in Austin, Texas.

ECU INAUGURATION PLANNED

East Central University President John R. Hargrave will be formally inaugurated as the eighth president of ECU on Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. in the Ataloa Theatre, Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. The public is invited to the ceremony and reception which follows in the Lockmiller Lobby.

DR. BILL S. COLE REMEMBERED

ECU’s University Center will become known as the Bill S. Cole University Center on Monday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m.

Dr. Cole was the sixth president of ECU, serving from 1989 until his retirement in 2006. He oversaw 21 construction, renovation or expansion projects, 16 endowments of chairs, professorships and lectureships, approximately $100 million in grants, the growth of the ECU Foundation, Inc. from less than $2 million to approximately $20 million in assets, and ECU’s entry into NCAA Division II.

Last year ECU began honoring and recognizing different community partners at ECU home football games.

This season ECU honored: Holcim Inc., Educators, Valley View Regional Hospital, Peoples Electric Cooperative, Ada Area Chamber of Commerce, ECU Alums and the 200910 ECU Softball Team.

NEWEST CHAMBER MEMBER

ECU’s School of Business recently joined the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce. Dean Wendell Godwin and Dr. Pat Fountain will be teaching some of the Chamber’s Leadership YOUniversity sessions this spring.

ECU HONORS LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT

In an effort to strengthen support with surrounding law enforcement departments ECU hosted an appreciation luncheon at CLEET.

TULSA CHANNEL 6 REPORTER ON CAMPUS

LeAnne Taylor, co-host of Six in the Morning out of Tulsa, was on campus following up with old friends. Last spring Taylor traveled to Uganda with President Hargrave and others with Pros for Africa. Two ECU students from Uganda were the first to receive the Pros for Africa Scholarship. Taylor was doing a follow up piece to see how the two students, Charles Mugabiand and Richard Kirabira, were adjusting to life in Ada.

VISION BANK ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIP

Dr. Jim Rauch (center front) was named the Vision Bank Endowed Professor in Banking and Finance.

Rauch is an assistant professor in the School of Business and has been at ECU since 2004.

KELLOGG SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 2008 by Dr. Don and Jane Kellogg to benefit students who plan to major in math or science education.

The Kelloggs recently met with current recipients, Laura Johnson from Holdenville, Shelby Sayre from Chandler and Melissa Williams from Konawa.

LEARNING ABOUT INTEGRATION

Last month Dr. Christine Pappas took a group of Political Science and Legal Studies students to USAO in Chickasha to hear a talk by Minnejean Brown Trickey, one of the Little Rock Nine who integrated Central High School.

STUDENTS PLACE IN ETHICS CHALLENGE

ECU students Matt Sweatt, Nisha Antoine and Alex Schaffer represented ECU well and finished third in the Statewide Student Ethics Challenge, just behind OU and OSU. They will now travel to San Antonio to compete in the regional competition.

The Aquila Theatre Company, one of the foremost producers of touring classical theatre, performed Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center on Nov. 2.

Ada was the only stop in the state for the theatre company, which is based in New York.

AMBASSADOR BLACKWELL VISITS CAMPUS

A brown bag lunch with Washington, D.C. government leader and alum, Chickasaw Nation’s Ambassador Charles Blackwell was held last month. ECU students had the opportunity to meet with him and ask questions.

SISTER ROSEMARY NYIRUMBE VISITS CAMPUS

Overflow crowds gathered to hear Sister Rosemary. She is the recipient of the 2007 CNN Heroes Community Crusader Award for her work in Gulu, Uganda. She is the director of the St. Monica Girls’ Tailoring Centre, a vocational training school for disadvantaged girls and young women who are victims of local wars.

RIVER HUSTON SPEAKS AT ECU

A stand-up comic, award-winning poet, journalist and activist gave a presentation on alcohol awareness, safer sex and sexual assault at ECU.

Described as blunt and irreverent, River Huston talked about how her experiences have changed her life and how the choices others make change their lives. Audience members participated in the frank, interactive discussion through questions and comments using current media such as texting.

River Huston was sponsored by the Campus Initiative to Reduce Crime Against Women (CIRCAW).

DR. ZHANG TO PRESENT PAPER

Dr. Hongkia Zhang will present a research paper at the National Decision Sciences Institutes 2010 Annual Meeting in San Diego. Dr. Zhang’s paper is titled - Service Capacity Allocation And Pricing Policies: A Dynamic Programming Approach.

GARRISON KEILLOR HIGHLIGHTS HADA

Storyteller and humorist Garrison Keillor read three poems by Dr. Ken Hada, associate professor of English and languages at ECU, on “The Writer’s Almanac” radio show, in October.

Keillor hosts the daily radio program produced by American Public Media. In each program he presents a list of cultural events and anniversaries, many associated with literature and literary figures, then ends with the poetry reading.

TRADITION CONTINUES

ECU held its second annual Trunk or Treat event for the Ada community. Hundreds of creatures and popular superheros were present.

STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER VISIT ECU

ECU hosted several state and regional events on campus this semester.

Thousands of students attended events such as the Grounded Chalk Festival, Little Dixie Contest, Tigerpalooza, Regional Computer Programming Contest and College Fair, just to name a few.
