ECU Graduate Selected as Teacher of the Year

During ceremonies at the Oklahoma State Fair, State Superintendent Sandy Garrett announced that Stephanie Canada, a physical education teacher at Will Rogers Elementary School in Shawnee, was the 20072008 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year.

From 1995-1997 Canada was the assistant women's basketball coach at East Central University. She earned her Bachelor of Science in exercise science and a master's in secondary physical education from ECU.

$1 Million

ECU

Grant, to Help Prevent Violence Against Women

A $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice has been awarded to ECU to develop a program with the five other universities in the Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO) to help prevent violence against women.

ECU, the flagship institution acting on behalf of RUSO, was notified by the Justice Department’s Office on Violence Against Women that ECU and sister institutions Northeastern State University, the University of Central Oklahoma and Northwestern, Southeastern and Southwestern Oklahoma State Universities will share the grant and establish the Regional University System of Oklahoma Violence Prevention Project.

ECU Selected by AHEC to Develop Branch Campus in Ardmore

Mark Cunningham, Ardmore Higher Education Center board of trustees’ chair, congratulates President Rafes. ECU was selected to become the AHEC’s partner in developing a proposed branch campus in Ardmore.

KGOU is now available at ECU National Public Radio has arrived in Ada on 98.1 FM. Through an agreement with the University of Oklahoma, ECU is now a translator site and is simulcasting programming for KGOU Radio.

Not only can the surrounding area listen to public radio programming, but ECU mass communications students have started producing their own programs for KGOU about ECU and the Ada community this semester.

ECU Observes Constitution Day with Rothbaum Lecture

Randall B. Woods, Cooper distinguished professor of history at the University of Arkansas, delivered the eighth Rothbaum Lecture at ECU. Many staff, faculty and students enjoyed the discussion on LBJ, Civil Rights and Viet Nam.

The Political Science Program also awarded prizes in the “Do You Know Your Constitution?” quiz.

Fellowships Awarded to 14 ECU Students

Fourteen East Central University students have been awarded funding under the NASA National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program for the 2007-2008 academic year.

The awards are competitive and applications are reviewed by a committee on campus. Awards are in the form of scholarship and research stipends and range from $350 to $2,000 for the academic year.

ECU’s School of Business kicks off the 2007 Homecoming Festivities

More than 200 ECU School of Business Graduates came “home” to ECU this week. The ECU School of Business hosted two luncheons to show appreciation their students, graduates and supporters.

Pink Out with the ZETAs

October is national breast cancer awareness month and the ZETAs are encouraging everyone to wear pink to the Oct. 27 home football game.

ECU to Honor Chickasaw Gov. Bill Anoatubby

ECU will celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of Gov. Anoatubby on Friday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. in the University Center. ECU will unveil the bust of the 1972 ECU graduate, which will join the other busts of ECU graduates who have gone on to become governors.

ECU’s Kerr Activities Center will begin preparing for the basketball season with a new floor, goals and speaker system. Cheer for the Tigers, basketball preseason begins Nov. 6.

ECU will take on three NCAA Division I schools this year.

Nov. 6 -- ECU vs. OSU at Gallagher-Iba Arena

Then ECU will play two games in the 2K Sports College Hoop Classic –Coaches vs. Cancer at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman.

Nov. 8 -- ECU vs. Univ. of Denver

Nov. 9 -- ECU vs. Oklahoma or Univ. of San Francisco.The Tigers play three regular season road games before opening the home portion of their schedule on Thursday, Dec. 6, against Abilene Christian at 8 p.m. at the Kerr Activities Center.

They are: former Oklahoma Gov. Robert S. Kerr, former Oklahoma Gov. George Nigh and former Arizona Gov. Ernest McFarland.

ECU Dance Team Offers Clinic

The ECU Dance Team added 14 new performers during the ECU football halftime performance on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Young ladies from ages 4 to 8 who participated in the clinic joined the dance team and had the opportunity to show Tiger fans their new moves.

ECU Communication Instructor Invites Everyone to Come and See.

Linda Schaefer, communications instructor, photojournalist and author of the exciting and beautifully illustrated Come and See: A photojournalist's journey into the world of Mother Teresa, shared her very personal experience in the development of her book. Schaefer holds the distinction of being the last photojournalist to be granted full access to the late Nobel Prize winner and soon-to-be-sainted nun.

Modern Day Julius Caesar is a Success

ECU Theatre just finished its first show of the season, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Approximately 250 people came over the fourday run of the show. The play was directed by Dr. Bret Jones. Kelli Lowe was assistant director. The play was set in modern times to reflect the political unrest that is presented in the play.

The next show for ECU Theatre is Oklahoma! Nov 14 – 17 at 8 p.m. in the Dorothy Summers Theatre.

East Main Cultural Arts District to Hold First of Public Meetings on Oct. 25

The EMCAD will hold the first community forum on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 5:30 p.m. at the Ada Arts and Heritage Center.

The first forum will work with the community on forming the geographic boundaries of the proposed district. Local residents are invited to participate in the development of the district. Earlier this year, ECU was awarded two grants totaling more than $600,000 to help launch the district.

Dr. Rafes and Dr. Hall Present at National Conf.

Dr. Richard Rafes and Dr. Delma Hall attended the National Symposium on Student Retention Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Dr. Hall presented “Group Process to Foster Faculty Engagement in Retention Efforts” in an interactive format with participants listening, doing and evaluating results.

Dr. Rafes presented “Engaging Faculty in Retention Issues Using a Presidential Summit on Retention: The Need and Scope” and used technology for instant audience response to questions during his presentation. The instant response of audience participants involved the audience and forwarded his discussion of how and why the Presidential Summit was used successfully at East Central University.

Dr. Sewell Raises International Awareness

Dr. Guy Sewell introduces an international audience to the location and culture of ECU and the city of Ada at the beginning of his presentation to the 20 representatives attending a NATO conference in Slovenia. The conference focused on the growing environmental challenges associated with contaminated sediments.

Faculty, staff and students may now purchase flex dollars. Flex dollars can be purchased in $25, $50 and $100 increments at the Virginia Taff Cafeteria. Flex dollars can be used at the University Center, Taff Cafeteria or Pesagi Outtakes.

Your Health Matters

Flu shots are available for the entire month of October from the ECU health services room 137 in the Memorial Student Union building. The cost is $35 – cash or check only.

Sign up for yoga classes, workout in the wellness center or sign up for Weight Watchers – now available on campus. Schedules are designed with ECU employees in mind. If you are planning to start during the fall break, please be aware that wellness center and swimming pool schedules will change.

More than 200 people attended the event, including greetings from former Governor George Nigh (right), shown with Dr. Rafes and Gov. Anoatubby.

Anoatubby’s portrait and bronze bust were unveiled and now reside in the atrium of Danley Hall. The Hall of Governors includes the portraits and busts of ECU’s three other governors, Robert S. Kerr, Ernest McFarland and George Nigh. All are ECU graduates.

“O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A, Ok- la- ho’ ma!”

This refrain from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” soon will be heard at East Central University as part of the celebration of the state’s 100th anniversary. The Ada community and ECU’s Theatre, Music and Dance programs have joined together and will perform the famous musical Nov. 14 - 16 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. in the Dorothy Summers Theatre.

All Greek Garage Sale

ECU’s sororities and fraternities will hold an All Greek Garage Sale from 8 a.m. to noon on the Tiger Commons lawn just off Stadium Drive.

All proceeds will benefit each chapter’s national philanthropy, including Research for Juvenile Diabetes, Susan G. Komen, Make a Wish, Books for Kids, The Hole in the Wall Gang and The United Way. The sale is sponsored by ECU’s Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils.

24 Hour Play Fest Scheduled

Three one-act plays – all written, memorized and staged within 24 hours – will be presented at 8 p.m. Nov. 3 in East Central University’s Black Box Theatre in Science Hall.

ECU members of Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre honor society, will host their first-ever 24 Hour Play Fest to raise funds to assist the ECU Theatre’s production needs. Donations will be accepted at the door.

Regional Computer Programming Competition

More than 20 student teams from colleges and universities across Oklahoma and Texas will be challenged to solve real-world problems Nov. 3 when East Central University hosts a regional competition of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest

ECU Celebrating Year of Russian Language, U.S.-Russian Relations

Discussions about the historical and political aspects of cooperation between Russia and the United States and a poetry reading by internationally known Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko will be part of a celebration Nov. 6. The sessions begin at 2 p.m. in the Estep Mulitmedia Center.

Winners of the essay contest will be announced and a poetry reading will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Stanley Wagner Ballroom. A Russian Tea Room reception will follow, and Yevtushenko will sign copies of his books.

ECU Grad August Petersen Will Discuss ‘Inspiring Success’ Monday in Boswell Lecture

August Petersen, a former student leader at East Central University and a senior partner, officer, board member, investor and consultant to numerous Texas business ventures for more than 25 years, will be the speaker for ECU’s annual Boswell Lecture on Nov. 5.

He will discuss “Inspiring Success” at 7 p.m. in the Estep Multimedia Center.

Petersen, who attended ECU on an athletic scholarship, took an active role in several student organizations and was elected Student Senate president for two consecutive years. Majoring in accounting and business administration, he graduated with honors and was named the university's Outstanding Student and the Business School's Most Distinguished Graduate.

He is also a former trustee of the ECU Foundation Inc.

Jones’ Play Selected For Workshop, Staging in Los Angeles

A play by Dr. Bret Jones, assistant professor of communication, has been selected for a weeklong workshop Nov. 11-18 in Los Angeles.

His play, “Native Skin,” will have a staged reading at 8 p.m. Nov. 17 in the 2007 Festival of New Plays at Native Voices at the Autry, a program which develops and produces new works for the stage by Native American playwrights.

IT’S TURKEY TIME

The Human Resources Club will hold its Annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 19.

Each year faculty, staff and students work together to feed more than 3,000 individuals in the community.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD FAIR SET

The annual International Food Fair (formerly called the Multicultural Dinner) will be held Nov. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Wagner Ballroom. Tickets are available in the International Office. The cost is $5 for students and $10 for the general public.

ECU Student Places at Grounded Chalk Art Festival

Individuals and teams from area schools had six hours to complete a chalk or dry tempera drawing in one of the parking spaces.

Little Dixie Contest Brings 1,300 Students to ECU Oct. 23 and 25

Approximately 1,300 high school students from across the state competed in the Little Dixie Music Contest at East Central University.

Students came from Altus in southwest Oklahoma to Oologah in the northeast, said Kelley Alig, director of the contest which has been held at ECU for more than 25 years.

About 800 students from smaller schools competed on Oct. 23, with 500 students from larger schools performing on Oct. 25. They were judged in solo, choir and ensemble competitions. Trophies and medals were awarded for superior ratings and choirs competed for a sweepstakes award.

East Central University has gone International

Dr. Richard Rafes, Tommye Rafes and Dr. Mara Sukholutskaya, associate professor of English and languages, traveled to Ukraine and Russia over fall break to meet with university officials at Kiev National University of Linguistics, Ukraine, and State University of Management in Moscow. Rafes signed agreements creating two sister-institutions.

What does this mean? The agreements provide opportunities for student and faculty exchange between ECU and sister universities through ECU’s international education exchange programs.

What is the biggest benefit?

Such exchange will enhance the global understanding of our students and internationalize the campus life at ECU.

Johnson Walks for 3-Days to Raise Awareness about Breast Cancer

Kathy Johnson, director of campus life and leadership, walked in the Dallas-Fort Worth area’s 2007 Breast Cancer 3-Day Oct. 26 – 28, 60 miles from the Southfork Ranch to Southern Methodist University to raise awareness about breast cancer.

ECU Soccer Club in the Playoffs

ECU’s Soccer Club, part of the OK College Clubs Soccer League, has made the play-offs for the second year in a row. The coach is Stan Nnochirionye, ECU distance education I-TV/Multimedia services coordinator and assistant professor of communication.

OSRHE Chancellor to Deliver Graduation Address

Addressing candidates for undergraduate and graduate degrees during ECU’s first December Commencement ceremony will be Dr. Glen D. Johnson Jr., Oklahoma chancellor of higher education.

Previously, students who completed degree requirements during the fall semester were included in the spring Commencement ceremony in May. This December there are 217 candidates for bachelor’s degrees and 72 candidates for master’s degrees.

Johnson, the chief executive officer for the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education, leads a system of 25 state colleges and universities, 10 constituent agencies, one higher education center and independent colleges and universities coordinated with the state system.

First Night Ada is Underway

Contributions from numerous Ada groups, such as the East Central University Foundation Inc., are supporting the community’s inaugural First Night Ada celebration on Dec. 31. Elvis – Coming to East Central University

A show that’s been called as close as today’s audiences can get to an actual Elvis Presley concert will be the grand finale of an evening of performances Dec. 31 during First Night Ada, a community celebration of the New Year. Ada has the only First Night event in Oklahoma.

The activities, all on the ECU campus, will begin at 6 p.m. with 40 different performing groups ranging from country music to the big band sound and rock and roll. Many will perform simultaneously at one of seven venues.

Elvis look-alike, sound-alike and “Jeopardy” contests also are planned for children ages 6-12, teens 13-19 and adults 20 and older.

First Night is an alcohol-free public festival that marks the passage from the old year to the new through the arts. All First Night celebrations are licensed by http://www.firstnight.com/First Night International and adhere to a set of standards.

Admission buttons that will allow entry to all First Night performances are now on available at a number of Ada businesses for $10. The price will increase to $15 on Dec. 31. Groups of five or more can purchase buttons for $8 each, and children age 5 and younger will be admitted free.

The buttons, which were designed by ECU senior Corey Fetters, will not cover the cost of food or beverages that will be offered by six vendors around the campus.

ECU Flute Ensemble Performing Winter Concert

Members of East Central University’s Flute Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Ada Arts and Heritage Center in Ada. The concert will commemorate the spirit of the holiday season.

The First Building of the New Oklahoma Century!

The new Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center will be the first East Central University building of the second century of Oklahoma. ECU seeks naming gifts for the performance center. More than 30 individuals/groups/businesses have taken advantage of this opportunity to permanently place their names in the state-of-the-art facility. Four Sheets to the Wind

Sterlin Harjo will screen his award-winning feature film Four Sheets to the Wind at ECU on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, 6 –8 p.m.

Four Sheets to the Wind follows a young SeminoleCreek as he tries to make sense of life. After discovering his father’s body and choosing to fulfill his unorthodox wishes for burial, Cufe Smallhill goes to Tulsa and gets to know his sister Miri, her friends, her problems and her troubled relationship with her mother. This tale of healing highlights humanity and captures the beauty of the Oklahoma rhythms.

2007 Century Builders Campaign

The Century Builders Campaign had impressive participation from East Central University’s employees. This initiative, as part of the Centennial Project for the university, was a comprehensive funds development campaign for our employees. The Centennial Campaign’s vision, “Encompass the Past, Enrich the Future,” was fully demonstrated by 43 percent of employees contributing.

President Holds Open Forum and Student Dialog

This semester

President Rafes invited all faculty to an afternoon open forum and all staff to join him for a brown bag lunch meeting. Employees had the opportunity to discuss issues of importance to them at the meetings

President Rafes has also initiated regular meetings with students to encourage dialogue and discussion to meet their needs in the same manner.

USDA Leadership Academy Meets at ECU

ECU was pleased to host the USDA quarterly leadership training of all USDA regional managers. USDA leaders throughout the state saw firsthand ECU’s efforts to create Ada’s East Main Cultural Arts District with the funding from the USDA Agriculture Rural Business Opportunity Grant and Rural Business Enterprise Grant.

The group was also informed about the recent purchase of the former Dairy Queen/Tongs in the 800 block of East Main. Demolition on this site will begin early next year and in its place will be the home of the incubator funded by the ARBEG grant.

The community planning meetings have been completed, and the input and feedback from the community of Ada has shown overwhelming support for the East Main Cultural Arts District. Entrepreneurs, current business owners and residents voiced their opinions. The complete survey results are posted on www.ecok.edu/emcad and include the community comments and concerns, many of which relate to business development and retention.

Local Flag Football Team Takes the Field

During the last home game of the season, the local 1st grade football team played during half-time and stole the show.

MSC Plays Home Games at ECU

ECU is proud to open Kerr Activities Center to Murray State College this season. Because of the renovation of the MSC gym, both the MSC men’s and women’s home basketball games will be played in Ada. ECU students are allowed free admission with a student ID.

Alums Return to ECU to Play Ball

The Men’s Basketball Team played a group of alums/former players on Nov. 12. This inaugural event was a tremendous success. Hundreds of fans showed up to cheer on the Now and Then Tigers.

Athletic Department Gives to Ada Community

Thanks to “Feed the Family,” an event sponsored by the FCA and ECU’s athletic department, more than 100 families were provided food for their Thanksgiving meal this year. Members of the two organizations not only carried the packages for them, but also signed autographs for the kids.

Serving the Community

The Human Resources Club held its Annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 19. More than 3,000 community members were served at this event.

Students

Volunteer to Clean Up Park Service Saturday is a great way for ECU students to give back to the community. Members of Sigma Tau Gamma and Chi Omega took a Saturday and help make the park a cleaner place for all.

The Show Must Go On

Alpha Psi Omega hosted the first-ever 24 Hour Play Fest at ECU. The show was a tremendous success. Fifteen university students worked tirelessly in writing, preparing, acting and performing a production all within 24 hours.

International Food Fair

The annual International Food Fair was a great success. ECU currently has 68 international students from 28 countries. ECU faculty, staff, students and community members enjoyed sampling dishes from the students’ native countries. The International student organization raised funds which will be used to fund international student scholarships.

Horne And Company Establishes Professorship in Accounting

A $125,000 gift to the East Central University Foundation Inc. from the Ada public accounting firm Horne and Company has established the Horne and Company Regents Professorship in Accounting at ECU.

The gift was made by the firm’s partners, Bill Horne Sr., Bill Horne Jr. and Curtis Wilson. It will be matched by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

Chesapeake Scholarship Winners Named

Seven outstanding ECU students have been named the first recipients of the newly established Chesapeake Cartography Scholarships. Dr. Gregory Plumb, chair of the Department of Cartography and Geography, announced the awards, which range from $1,000 to $1,500.

The scholars for the 2007-08 academic year are Jacob Lempges, a freshman from McLoud; Adam Milligan, a senior from Ponca City; Daniel Eli Pope, a freshman from Ada; Chloe Price, a senior from Ardmore; Robert Rothell, a junior from Roff; Stefan Terrell, a freshman from Norman; and Carl Williams, a freshman from Oklahoma City.

Funded by Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corporation, the nation’s most-active driller of natural gas wells, the scholarship program rewards some of the brightest students majoring in cartography at ECU, Plumb said.

ECU is the only university in Oklahoma, and one of only seven in the United States, that offers an undergraduate degree in cartography. Over the next four years, Chesapeake has committed an additional $40,000 in scholarships for incoming and current cartography majors at ECU.

Dr. Steve Turner, ECU interim vice president for administration and finance, has been appointed by Chancellor Glen D. Johnson to the board of directors for the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training

Dr. Daniel Named to Who’s Who

Dr. Arlie Daniel, professor of communications, will be profiled in the 2008 “Who’s Who in America.” He was selected based on his academic and leadership achievements and community service work.

Morrison Receives Recognition

Becky Morrison, adjunct instructor of communication, was selected through a national search to be a scholar at Tanglewood Two: Charting the Future at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
