About the Tour

Divided in three categories, tour goers can select between Artists that include studios or spaces featuring one or more artists, Dedicated Art Spaces who host arts programming year round, or Temporary Art Experiences with group exhibitions, or space interventions created for the tour.

DATES AND TIMES

Free and open to the public, the studio tour combines the former East and West Austin Studio Tours into one citywide event presented across three weekends in November.

Weekend 1: November 5-6 (WEST)

Weekend 2: November 12-13 (WEST & EAST)

Weekend 3: November 19-20 (EAST)

Art experiences will be available 12-6pm each weekend of the tour. Some studios and venues will also host events outside of the official hours of the tour, stay tuned online and on the app for our calendar of events for details.

BOUNDARIES

The Austin Studio Tour is divided into two regions, WEST of IH35 and EAST of IH35, within the 10 City Council districts of Austin, plus a 10-mile radius from the Capitol.

GROUP EXHIBITION

The perfect place to begin the tour, attendees can view artworks that represent the breadth of Austin

Studio Tour participants in this artist showcase at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center.

Special Projects

Thanks to grant funding from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Big Medium commissioned four artists to create work to be revealed during the Austin Studio Tour.

With excellence and innovation in mind, we selected Texas based artists that have engaged with Big Medium for both past and future programming. Alexandra Robinson, Brooke Burnside, José Villalobos, and Steve Parker will create site specific work at this year’s Austin Studio Tour Hub, the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center for the enjoyment of our community.

Alexandra Robinson is a visual artist who uses language and symbols in her creative practice. She grew up in the military and has lived all over the world; because of the semi- transient nature of moving every two years she has a longing for place and identity and explores these themes in her work. Robinson was raised with her immediate family; an intersection of her Mexican and Jewish heritage which has cultivated a complexity in how she sees and experiences the world.

Brooke Burnside was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas. She currently lives in Austin, Texas where she works as an Architectural Designer and maintains her artistic practice. Through a variety of media and methodologies, Burnside's work explores geography, position, memory, and the transgressive potential in abstract documentation.

José Villalobos’s multi-media practice objects and disrupts culturally accepted stereotypes of toxic masculinity. Villalobos grew up on the US/Mexico border in El Paso, TX, and was raised in a traditional and religiously conservative family. His work reconciles the identity challenges in his life, caught in between traditional Mexican customs and American mores, as well as growing up with religious ideals that conflict and condemn being gay. Villalobos confronts the derogatory terms and attitudes that he continues to withstand today. He demonstrates that dismantling traditional modes of

masculine identity centers an interstitial space where materiality softens virility. Villalobos protests the toxicity of machismo using objects, specifically within the norteño culture, that carry a history by deconstructing and altering them. Although new forms are created, he demonstrates the battle between the acceptance of being a maricón and assimilating to the cultural expectations.

Steve Parker works with salvaged musical instruments, amateur choirs, marching bands, urban bat colonies, flocks of grackles, and pedicab fleets to investigate systems of control, interspecies behavior, and forgotten histories. His projects include elaborate civic rituals for humans, animals, and machines; listening sculptures modeled after obsolete surveillance tools; and cathartic transportation symphonies for operators of cars, pedicabs, and bicycles.

In addition to the Austin Studio Tour commissions, funding from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts will also support a special collaboration between artist RF. Alvarez and James Beard Award winner, Edgar Rico from Nixta Taqueria, who together will create a unique dinner experience exclusively for our Director’s Circle and Chair’s Circle Members this December.

RF. Alvarez deals with impermanence, indulgence, and belonging: three interconnected pillars of the queer experience. “I am a gay man whose father immigrated from Mexico and whose mother comes from a family of cowboys. My work responds to these heritages by showcasing the fallacy of masculinity central to both. I create images of a world where things are beautiful, temporary, unfurled, and tender. I show men in love; I show groups of queer friends drinking and laughing; I show flowers in full bloom, at the edge of wilting, fighting for their own beauty; and I show the windswept landscapes of the place where I am from: a place of deep thunderstorms and dried grasses and conflict. I hope, by presenting these subjects in tonal and colorful compositions, to create a vision of queer resilience within an often inhospitable environment”.

20th Anniversary

It all started with 28 studios…

In early 2003, three artists, Jana Swec, Joseph Phillips and myself, Shea Little, stumbled upon an idea; We hoped to make an event that would help support and grow our art making practices, while sharing the love with other artists living and working around us in east Austin. We met with as many artists as we could to share the plan, and launched the first East Austin Studio Tour that same year. Big Medium’s formation as a non-profit stemmed from the first East Austin Studio Tour, a one day event, free and open to the public, with only 28 studios and 50 artists.

Now with over 520 participants citywide, the Austin Studio Tour champions the abundance of talent that makes up the large and wildly diverse creative community of Austin. We're grateful for the dedicated artists, partners, sponsors, and tour-goers who have made this program possible and allowed us to reach such a meaningful milestone. It is through your support that we are able to further our mission of supporting artists through equitable and inclusive platforms to explore their practice and advance their careers, while enabling audiences and artists to create close bonds that elevate our wonderful, ever-changing, creative city.

It has been an honor to work with so many amazing people and organizations over these 20 years. The following list is by no means absolutely exhaustive and inclusive of everyone who has helped along the way, but it does capture a majority of the amazing people who deserve my eternal gratitude for helping make the studio tour what it is today. Thank you and I hope to see you out on the tour.

WERK HARD. SLAY HARD.

ANNIE ARNOLD is a Visual Artist bemused by cultural and personal acts of narcissism. She is currently designing and producing a series of embroidered merit badges based on posted social media photos. These patches depict familiar tropes of white people engaging in “aspirational” behaviors as dictated by influencer culture, critiquing “sameness” and the over-simplified, particularized world fed to us by the internet.

CP8 Capitol View Arts

With hands on workshops and interactive community engagement, we give arts resources to develop their skills and grow their art business. Our roots stem from a realization that if art is not worked to be preserved it may be demised. As this happens, it takes with it: culture, expression, opportunities and a voice speaking for the unheard. We are here to amplify the voices of these artists in whatever form of expression they choose. We have been in Austin through the changing landscape of people, culture and expression. We are part of the progression to hold the values of this city in check as opportunities seem to be taken away from local artist and tailored for larger industrial productions. We started with a vision of helping local artists and although our city continues to change, our commitment has not.

OLIVER FRANKLIN

1961-2022

We are terribly saddened by the loss of Oliver Franklin from our lives. He will be forever in our hearts. In a humble effort to honor Oliver’s legacy, Big Medium and the Friends of the Elisabet Ney Museum have created an annual award to celebrate a woman leader in the arts. The award will go to a fellow champion of creativity and individualism who embodies Oliver’s tireless efforts to support the art community.
