Great Paxton Bells – Securing the Future.

We are delighted that the bell project has now been completed and we celebrated the new peal of six bells, including a new treble bell, with a service led by Bishop Stephen the bishop of Ely on October 18th. We were so pleased that some pupils from Great Paxton School joined us and sang “The Bell of Creation” along with other hymns, readings and many expressions of thanks to everyone who had supported the project in any way.

Bishop Stephen climbed up to the ringing floor and dedicated the peal, along with the new treble which was gifted by a local benefactor.

Six ringers then rang for a few moments – as they did before and after the service.

The project was made possible by a substantial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and other grant making bodies along with local donors and sponsors of headstock and bell inscriptions.

The ringers will be ringing for the services on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays every month and for special services such as Remembrance Sunday.

During the service, Bishop Stephen also confirmed William Royal and Suzi Gamage.

The Church 100 Club marches on!

Annette writes: "As I write this Graham Bevan will be keeping very busy knocking on just about every house in the village collecting for the 100 Club. When the 100 Club was introduced in 2010 it was 100 names, but over the years it has grown to its current 250, and to date has provided over £22,000 towards the running costs of Holy Trinity.

Last year we really struggled raising the £19,221.95 keeping our magnificent eleventh century Saxon-Minster church open. And the bad news is this year will be around £20,000! We rely on collections, standing orders, donations, marriages, fundraising events, funerals, baptisms, a donation from the parish council towards church upkeep and the 100 Club to keep afloat.

Our main concerns are the cancellation of several standing orders and the continuing shortfall in weekly collections.

As the 100 club is now our largest source of regular income Graham's target for Year 9 is an ambitious 300 numbers. If he's successful, that means a profit of a whopping £5,300! Which could make all

From the many conversations I have with village people, I know how much the church and churchyard is valued at many levels and for many reasons. It has been on the present site for over 1,000 years and is a building of huge architectural significance as well as being a place of worship, celebration and where people find friendship. The PCC continue to do their best to look after it, but we can only do so with the support of the local community. If you do or can support the 100 Club in future, we are so grateful!

We meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday each month at 11:00 at The Bell. We have tea or coffee and cake, we chat together and then either have a quiz, play games such as Dominos etc. We now have a bingo game which we have tried out once, everyone enjoyed it and we had small prizes for 1st line & 1st full house etc. We don’t intend to do Bingo every time, just now and again. At our last club Dennis provided us with ‘The Lego Challenge’ there were 12 boxes of lego bricks and a template of what to build. Everyone joined in and helped each other. When all completed they were put together and below is a picture of the result.

History The Offord and Buckden Angling Society was formed in the early 1800's, and until 1959 benefitted from the Great Northern Railway Station at Offord which, being only 100 yards from the club's water on the River Great Ouse, it provided easy access to anglers from the north and south of the country. Some of our members remember travelling on the train with their grandparents and fishing for Chub alongside the great Dick Walker.

Today, the club has access to approximately seven kilometres of top class fishing on the River Great Ouse, located between the Grafham Pumping Station at Offord Cluny and continuing along the river downstream, almost to Brampton. Whether you're looking for a still water, a fastflowing stream, a small intimate river or one that's wide, languid and deep, OBAS have it. The river is well populated with all types of fresh water fish notably Barbel, Bleak, Bream, Carp, Chub, Dace, Gudgeon, Perch, Pike, Roach, Tench and even Zander. Incredibly Catfish and more unusually Sea Trout are two species that have also been reportedly caught in the past.

The waters are divided and described as follows, although a more detailed description will be included in the next issue of the Paxton Post; A, B and C Sections Located through the Buckden Marina these ‘members only’ sections are prolific with all species of fish but are particularly popular with river Carp anglers. Several fish over 30lb being reported almost every year. Anglers regularly also catch Bream to 10lb, Chub to 7lb, Perch over 2lb, Pike to 20lb+ and Roach to 1lb.

D and E Sections These sections can be accessed via the Mill Stream along the New Cut and by walking over the concrete bridge. As this is part of the main river then similar results can be expected as to the A, B and C sections.

The Car Park Pool There are 3 weirs that affect the fishing conditions and the flow will vary with rainfall. Normally there is very little flow over the weirs until late summer so you can often fish the pool as you would a lake for Bream, Carp, Pike, Roach and Tench. A wonderful sight to see in the summer is the Carp spawning amongst the Lilly beds. This ‘pool’ is very popular with Pike anglers in the winter months as well.

The Triangle This under fished section of the river is located between the railway crossing and the Offord Lock boat channel. The Triangle is accessed by gates across the road from the car park pool. Bream, Carp, Chub, Perch, Pike and Roach all thrive here.

The Mill Stream This fast-flowing water offers great sport for the Barbel and Chub angler with reports of double figure Barbel and Chub to 7lb+ being caught. Look over the road bridge and see the shoals of fish spawning on the gravel beds.

The Black Overfalls Weir Pool This Weir Pool is fed by water from D and E sections. It holds shoals of good sized bream with fish over 6lb caught regularly as well as Barbel over 11lb, Chub to 7lb, Eels to 6lb, Pike to 24lb.

Even Carp to 20lb that have been caught and recorded in the constant swirling waters of the weir.

New Cut The New Cut is a narrow shallow water that runs from an over-fill water Pumping Station to the Black Overfalls Weir Pool, adjacent with the Ouse Valley Way footpath. Essentially a still water, it

can provide good Tench fishing in the summer and excellent pike fishing in the winter months.

Fish of all species shoal here when the main river is in flood and obviusly attract the preditor fish such as Perch, Pike and Zander.

OBAS Membership Adults £25.00, OAP 65+ £10.00, Disabled £7.50, Junior -17 Free Members are entitled to fish all sections and now night fishing is allowed on all sections as well.

Our annual membership runs for 12 months from 16th June but note that the ‘Close Season’ applies to present OBAS waters as of June 2018.

Day Tickets are valid on the Car Park Pool and Triangle only, issued by Bailiffs.

Adults £5.00, OAP 65+ £2.00, Disabled £2.00, Junior -17 Free Day tickets permit ‘Dawn till Dusk’ fishing only, therefore no night fishing is allowed.

Please note that all anglers must be in possession of an EA Rod Licence before commencement of fishing!

Great Paxton Parish Council needs your help to respond to several items that arose at their last meeting in September!

By now you will have received a letter and Housing Needs Survey from Cambridgeshire ACRE. Councillors gave permission for the survey to be posted because it will demonstrate whether there is a genuine local housing need in the Parish and whether the Cambridgeshire Rural Affordable Housing Partnership (made up of the District Council and local Housing Associations) should consider providing an affordable housing development for local people in the village. ‘Affordable’ means housing that has been subsidised in some form for those who may not be able to afford market prices. This survey has been undertaken at no cost to the Parish Council and if it reveals that there is no housing need then no further action will be taken. Please respond to Cambs ACRE! Results will be presented to a future Parish Council meeting.

Another survey! You may remember that the Parish Council has been working for some time on the idea of a cycle path from the village to St Neots.

Despite lots of effort this has not progressed as Councillors would have hoped due mainly to the major investment that would be required to get the project underway. Although the Council will look again at routes, path widths and materials to see whether

estimated costs can be reduced, it would like to establish what support there is in the village for the idea, so they can take a view on whether it is still worthwhile to continue to try to deliver the project. The Parish Council would be grateful if you could answer the short survey which is enclosed elsewhere in this edition of the Post, remove the page and pop it through the letterbox of one of the Parish Councillors who live on or near the High Street – addresses enclosed. You are welcome to email the Parish Clerk if you prefer?

The subject of overhanging trees and shrubs is frequently raised at Parish Council meetings by those residents in attendance. The Parish Council would be grateful if you would look after your front gardens so that overgrown bushes, shrubs and trees are kept in check and do not overhang the pavements or pathways! These can be a hazard to passing pedestrians and can also make visibility a problem for drivers. Your support and co-operation in keeping the village looking well maintained and cared for would be appreciated.

The Post Office has asked the Parish Council to spread the word about the dangers of SCAM MAIL and what to look out for? Is someone you know receiving a large amount of mail and are they sending money in response to this mail?

If so, they could be a target of scammers. Should you be concerned

It's always good to be back after the summer holidays - ready and raring to go welcoming girls old and new. We've used the start of the autumn term to start exploring the new Girlguiding programme which has been launched over the summer. The girls have voted on which of the six themes they wanted to look at this term and which activities they wanted to try. We've had fun with cheerleading challenges, water runs, learning secrets of survival and catching stories.

The girls have been getting crafty ahead of the villages WWI celebrations and we are looking forward to sharing our poppy display at the church later this month as well as joining the Remembrance Service.

Both units had a visit to the St Neots Community Fire Station to learn about fire safety and explore the fire station.

They was lots of fun trying on the fire fighters uniform (for the leaders too!) and having a turn with the water hoses.

Thanks to Jill, Dave and James for having us (and getting a little soggy in the process). The Rainbows also had an extra visitor at the fire station as our local commissioner joined us to present the girls with their certificate and trophy for winning the Cambs West County Challenge earlier this year.

The Brownies were joined by Papa Cucina just before half term. The girls had a great time making their own wood-fired pizzas and designing their own pizza boxes. Thanks to Jamie and Ella for donating their time so generously - the pizzas were delicious!

Pizza making by Libby Oakley, age 8 At Brownies, we made our own pizzas with Papa Cucina. I was with the first group to make pizzas. First we got some dough and put a scoop of tomato sauce.

Then we got some slices of cheese, I put 7 slices of cheese of mine. Then we watched them go in the oven to cook. I had my pizza on the right side of the

pizza oven. It took about 5 minutes to cook. After our pizzas were cooked we went and ate some. Then we decorated our pizza boxes. I drew a picture of the pizza man on mine. I had a brilliant time making my own pizza with Papa Cucina, thank you. I shared my pizza with my family.

Fire Station visit by Evie-Mae Jackson, age 6 We went to the fire station for Rainbows.

We sat on chairs while the safety officer us a talk about fire safety. We learnt that when we have to get out of the house fast and safely. We then went outside and looked round the fire engine. It was really cool. We then played with the hose and everyone got wet and it was really funny. Then before we came home we got to try the uniform on. We all had so much fun.

Trophy presentation by Abigail Glover, age 6 I was with my Rainbow friends at the fire station and at the end of our visit we were presented with our County Challenge Trophy I felt happy and proud about the work my friends and I did to earn the trophy. The trophy was shiny, fancy and very pretty. My favourite part in earning the trophy was holding the tea party for the community.

Fire Station visit by Emma Holbrook, age 9 When Brownies went to the fire station, it was amazing! We got to dress up in fireman clothes and we witnessed what it would be like in an emergency because the sirens went off. We also got to see the shiny red fire truck and got to get squirted by the hose - it was amazing. I give this trip 10/10!

Volunteers We continue to look for additional adult volunteers to help support Girlguiding in Great Paxton and help us provide more opportunities for fun, friendship and adventure for girls. If you think you'd like to be get involved either as a leader or unit helper or you think you might be able to offer some skills please do get in touch!

Waiting Lists Both units are currently operating waiting lists. We'd recommend to anyone thinking about get their daughter involved in either Rainbows (5-6 years) or Brownies (7-10 years) to get them onto the waiting list sooner rather than later.

The county council website has much information regarding the work of the council. Councillors recently received training on mental health issues and what the county council can do to help and how all of us can stay in good mental health and help those that may not be in good mental health. There is now much more knowledge on mental health and its importance alongside physical good health. There are good tips and sign posting on the county council website https://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/bewell/your-health-and-wellbeing/mentalhealth-and-well-being/#struggling and includes the following 5 tips to maintain good mental health: • Connect - with the people around you and make time for family and friends.

• Be active - go for a run, take the dog for a walk, play 5-a-side, cycle to work or sign up for a dance class... Whatever it is, make sure it is something you enjoy.

• Take notice - be aware of the world around you and how you are feeling.

Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.

• Keep learning - whether it's learning how to cook your favourite food, a new language or taking up a new sport or hobby, it's all good for our mind!

• Give - do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile.
