Sunday September 9th at 11.00am (With a bell ringing theme and chance to see the bells in action on CCTV) Sunday October 14th at 11.00am Harvest Thanksgiving.

Sunday November 11th – Remembrance Sunday.

Timings yet to be confirmed, but the service will start at 10.00am with half muffled bells and a gathering on the village green at 10.15am. The service will start at 10.25am in church.

There will be the traditional Act of Remembrance around the war memorial at 11.00am and the service continuing in church afterwards.

Update on Bell Project.

THE BELLS ARE BACK. Hearty congratulations to everyone involved in the Great Paxton Bell Project!

It was a very special when the bells finally came back to Great Paxton Church week early in July and work began to hoist them into the tower and install them safely. The work has been carried out by staff from Taylors Bell Foundry with invaluable help from local volunteers who did a magnificent job in a cramped working environment. Once safe to ring, the ringers lost no time in giving the village the pleasure of hearing them ring out across Great Paxton. They have been practising on Monday nights during August and plan to ring on the second and third Sundays of the month at the 11.00am services.

The bells will be dedicated by The Bishop of Ely, Rt Revd Stephen Conway at a service beginning at 7.00pm which will also include Confirmation.

The project was made possible through the financial generosity of many people and many, many hours of hard work involving obtaining grants and encouraging community involvement.

The Heritage Lottery fund will have provided a large portion of the costs, the exact amount will be reported on in the next edition.

It’s lovely to read so many positive comments about the bells from local people.

Let’s hope that they really do “keep alive the rumour of God” and bring people together to worship and find friendship in the very special space which is Holy Trinity Church.

History The Offord and Buckden Angling Society was formed in the early 1800's, and until 1959 benefitted from the Great Northern Railway Station at Offord which, being only 100 yards from the club's water on the River Great Ouse, it provided easy access to anglers from the north and south of the country. Some of our members remember travelling on the train with their grandparents and fishing for Chub alongside the great Dick Walker.

Today, the club has access to approximately seven kilometres of top class fishing on the River Great Ouse, located between the Grafham Pumping Station at Offord Cluny and continuing along the river downstream, almost to Brampton. Whether you're looking for a still water, a fastflowing stream, a small intimate river or one that's wide, languid and deep, OBAS have it. The river is well populated with all types of fresh water fish notably Barbel, Bleak, Bream, Carp, Chub, Dace, Gudgeon, Perch, Pike, Roach, Tench and even Zander. Incredibly Catfish and more unusually Sea Trout are two species that have also been reportedly caught in the past.

The waters are divided and described as follows, although a more detailed description will be included in the next issue of the Paxton Post; A, B and C Sections Located through the Buckden Marina these ‘members only’ sections are prolific with all species of fish but are particularly popular with river Carp anglers. Several fish over 30lb being reported almost every year. Anglers regularly also catch Bream to 10lb, Chub to 7lb, Perch over 2lb, Pike to 20lb+ and Roach to 1lb.

D and E Sections These sections can be accessed via the Mill Stream along the New Cut and by walking over the concrete bridge. As this is part of the main river then similar results can be expected as to the A, B and C sections.

The Car Park Pool There are 3 weirs that affect the fishing conditions and the flow will vary with rainfall. Normally there is very little flow over the weirs until late summer so you can often fish the pool as you would a lake for Bream, Carp, Pike, Roach and Tench. A wonderful sight to see in the summer is the Carp spawning amongst the Lilly beds. This ‘pool’ is very popular with Pike anglers in the winter months as well.

The Triangle This under fished section of the river is located between the railway crossing and the Offord Lock boat channel. The Triangle is accessed by gates across the road from the car park pool. Bream, Carp, Chub, Perch, Pike and Roach all thrive here.

The Mill Stream This fast-flowing water offers great sport for the Barbel and Chub angler with reports of double figure Barbel and Chub to 7lb+ being caught. Look over the road bridge and see the shoals of fish spawning on the gravel beds.

The Black Overfalls Weir Pool This Weir Pool is fed by water from D and E sections. It holds shoals of good sized bream with fish over 6lb caught regularly as well as Barbel over 11lb, Chub to 7lb, Eels to 6lb, Pike to 24lb.

Even Carp to 20lb that have been caught and recorded in the constant swirling waters of the weir.

New Cut The New Cut is a narrow shallow water that runs from an over-fill water Pumping Station to the Black Overfalls Weir Pool, adjacent with the Ouse Valley Way footpath. Essentially a still water, it

can provide good Tench fishing in the summer and excellent pike fishing in the winter months.

Fish of all species shoal here when the main river is in flood and obviusly attract the preditor fish such as Perch, Pike and Zander.

OBAS Membership Adults £25.00, OAP 65+ £10.00, Disabled £7.50, Junior -17 Free Members are entitled to fish all sections and now night fishing is allowed on all sections as well. th Our annual membership runs for 12 months from 16 June but note that the ‘Close Season’ applies to present OBAS waters as of June 2018.

Day Tickets are valid on the Car Park Pool and Triangle only, issued by Bailiffs.

Adults £5.00, OAP 65+ £2.00, Disabled £2.00, Junior -17 Free Day tickets permit ‘Dawn till Dusk’ fishing only, therefore no night fishing is allowed.

Please note that all anglers must be in possession of an EA Rod Licence before commencement of fishing!

We have now well and truly said goodbye to the world cup which was a fantastic time for the pub and the village as many swooped into The Bell and watched it on our three screens to cheer England on.

There was only one minor scare when our ariel line was cut.....but thankfully that little hiccup did not prevent us from showing the game as villagers came to our rescue with ariels!! We can laugh about it now!!

We have held our first Gin Festival which can only be described as a success. We sold out of tickets and had on offer a variety of 10 different gins, needless to say there were not many sober people in the pub at the end of the night!! This will become a yearly event for the pub and an event we hope will grow and grow. Our next tasting event shall be a whiskey tasting event which we will look to do in the winter period!

Our website is now up and running and thanks must go to Nathan Elliot and Pulista for their help in designing this and putting it together. Please visit it at www.mybellpub.com The menu has been running now for a couple of months and has been a success and we are certainly getting busier. It is recommended that people do book a table now to ensure you can eat at the pub, although we are still taking walk in's.

We have a number of events booked in our marquee, which is up again after being blown over in the winds a couple of weeks ago. A new marquee had to be purchased as a result, but it is clear this marquee is proving very popular for people and booking events. We have hosted three weddings to date and have one more

booked in this year, plus a 40th and 50th birthday and a car treasure hunt bbq also.

It is fair to say that as the summer is drawing to an end our first four months have been fantastic and we as a team are enjoying what we are doing. If you have not yet given us a try, please do!

It has been a successful year at the rec ground so far with now adult and youth teams present.

Dulo transferred to Gt Paxton in early June this year, bringing 4 teams, registered as Gt Paxton Colts.

They have settled in nicely, and marked three additional pitches out, 2 on the field adjacent to the main pitch, and a smaller pitch within the main pitch.

There are now 5 teams registered with Hunts Youth League for Season 2018/2019, being U7, U9, U11, U16, & U17s.

Season starts I believe 8th September and once we have fixtures fixed we will get these listed in the next Paxton Post.

The new youth teams have made a great start on clearing and reducing the overgrowth from around the fields and parking areas, however any further assistance from the village & Rec to

After a strong display in the 2017/18 season Great Paxton F.C earned promotion to division 2B. However the switch to the B league geographically means far more travelling for the mens team with 2 trips as far as Wisbech to be made. The season starts with an away trip to Brampton reserves on the first of September. Infomation regarding fixtures will be available in The Bell up to a month in advance. We hosted the Jack Noades charity day this year which was a great success and have been hiring the rec and pavilion out to various youth groups for various fun events. If you’re interested in hiring it out please contact Michael Fairs 07950 967250.

It is fantastic to see the rec being well maintained and well used by kids in the village, it is a real asset to the village.

A relatively new committee looking to restore Great Paxton F.C to its previous status following the exodus of players and management in 2016/2017 which nearly saw the club fold entirely. With the current aim to regain FA Charter Standard status. Consisting of Howard Fieldhouse of the Old Guard as Treasurer. Tom Hunt (Chairman and Manager) Danny LoveFulton (Vice Chairman) Paul Clare (Secretary and Club Captain) Brian Affleck (Assistant Manager). The Club has a strong relationship with The Bell, in particular Pub Manager Rachael Martin, who continue to support one another.

This year The Bell have been running a weekly lottery with half the proceeds being won by a lucky individual and the other half going towards supporting the football club. So pop down to The Bell to support both your local Pub and Local Football team.

The Club has also received sponsorship from local business CLM Electrical

Solutions. Managing Director Colum Monteith has kindly agreed to sponsor a new range of tracksuit jackets for the club.

The introduction of the Colts team has already seen a few promising youngsters make the jump to mens football. The youth system means the future is bright for Great Paxton FC.

The Parish Council met in early July and since then have continued to work on several issues that arose at their summer meeting as follows – Planning Councillors have raised no objections to planning applications for alterations and a new glazed lobby to Units 3, 4 and 12 at the Titan Factory, Harley Industrial Park and for a single storey porch extension to the front of 41 London Lane. However, the Parish Council has submitted observations to the District Council on a proposed development for one detached and four pairs of semidetached, three-bedroom, two-storey houses at 74 High Street. Whilst supporting the opportunity to develop the site and potentially provide housing for first time buyers and young families in the village, Councillors questioned the number of units planned for such a small area and the adequacy of the proposed access road. Comments were also made about overlooking, the sufficiency of parking space on site particularly for visitors and additional vehicles and the need to avoid any overspill on the High Street which could create additional dangers and impair visibility for pedestrians and for vehicles exiting Church and Adams Lanes.

Councillors will continue to carefully monitor any new planning proposed in the village. If this is a subject that interests you, read on….

Applications for Funding Because the Council operates within a small budget, it is looking for support from external sources to progress projects on several fronts • from Highways England towards a Cycle Path scheme from the village to St Neots; •

from Cambridgeshire Community Fund towards a new junior swing and possibly a multi play unit on Saxon Green Play Space;

•

from Cambridgeshire Community Fund, a joint application with the Police towards speed watch equipment to be shared with neighbouring Parishes; and

•

from the County Council towards traffic calming in the High Street.

Hopefully, positive outcomes for each application will be reported over the next few months!

Village Maintenance The Parish Council continues to press the responsible authorities and landowners to ensure that cutting back of hedging, trees and shrubs and filling of potholes etc are undertaken in a timely manner and currently, it is awaiting feedback from the District Council on weed spraying which, it is recognised, is a problem on certain roads in the village.

Ongoing Issues Netwise UK have started to work on the Parish Council’s new website. So, look out for this over the next few weeks;

To support the Parish Council's application for funding traffic calming measures in the High Street, the Speed Watch team have been operating regular speed checks during the morning rush hour. Speeds in excess of 40 mph have been regularly recorded and reported to the Police.

We had a busy second half of the summer term...

We've been out and about lots this term and of course, the hot weather has meant that there have been lots of water games and challenges plus cooling off outside with ice poles! Rainbows have finished off their Roundabout Seasons badge with a series of Beehive challenges and indoor snowball fights.

The Brownies were busy completing their Clever Cogs engineering badge - we've tried chemical engineering by creating chemical reactions to produce exploding volcanoes (with mixed successes) and environmental engineering with an oilspill cleanup challenge.

The Rainbows were super proud and excited to hear that they came first with their entry to the County Challenge which saw them create a video and posters to promote the group, attend local guiding events and host a tea party for the community last term. Their hard work and the report that they delivered saw them beat off all of the other Rainbows groups across Cambridgeshire West.

Many attended our first Rainbow Sleepover and activity day. The girls voted for a storyland theme and so everything we did was inspired by the characters and story lines from Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Monkey Puzzle.

There was lots of fun and laughter as we flew to Neverland, found Golden Tickets, made Tootles arrows, had an Indian campfire, decorated treasure chests, made chocolate spoons, tried to hook captains book and crossed crocodile infested waters to name but a few of the activities.

Our last night of term saw the Rainbows at Manor Farm. As it was National Teddy Bear's Picnic Day we celebrated with, you've guessed it, a picnic and campfire.

Our teddies turned trampolinists on the parachute, we played hunt Olivia, shared

a picnic, sang campfire songs and said farewell to two of our Rainbows with a Pot of Gold ceremony as they are off to start a new adventure as Brownies next term.

We said farewell to two Rainbows who jumped over the rainbow and got their Pot of Gold as they move up to Brownies.

It was an emotional end of term as we said farewell to six Brownies who are off onto their next part of the Guiding adventure as they join Guides in September. But first, lots of fun to be had; hiding under parachutes, doing some back cooking on the campfire to make chocolate oranges and bananas (a mixed success depending upon where in the fire your fruit ended up), finishing off our Clever Cogs engineering badge by making a volcano and celebrating with five Brownies who made their promise - a busy end to term!!

Rainbow Sleepover by Helena, age 6 The theme of our sleepover was Storyland. We looked at Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Peter Pan and Monkey Puzzle.

We made hamma beads, did lots wordsearches, made chocolate spoons and i found a golden ticket. We went outside and did some Peter Pan games and some water fights. We made a treasure chest and animal bookmarks.

We slept inside in the Scout Hut. We had tents for us to sleep in and had to bring our sleeping bags. We did our own washing up. We had an indoor campfire and sang songs. There was a reading tee pee. My favourite bit was everything.

Brownies try Archery by Isobel, age 8 We went to play archery. Some people told us how to play and how to be safe.

We got put into groups and started to play. I had a lovely time. My best friend Libby got a bulls eye. Archery is great, may be you could try it one day?

Rainbow Pot of Gold by Sophia, age 6 I went to a teddy bears picnic for my Pot of Gold. We plated parachute games. We sang the Big Black Cloud song. I jumped high over the rainbow and go my Pot of Gold badge. I am looking forward to playing new games, making new friends and getting more badges at Brownies.
