Holy Trinity Church is a Grade One listed Saxon building, one of the oldest churches in the country. It forms part of the benefice with Little Paxton, Southoe and Diddington.

The Parochial Church Council have the responsibility for looking after the fabric of the building and also the large churchyard.

The PCC also has to raise funds every year to pay their portion of the benefice share (£10,924 in 2018), keep the building in good order and pay insurances.

One of our biggest sources of income is the 100 club – and you can read how vital that is to the church in Graham Bevan’s article.

Although closed during the day, a key is readily available (see below) and anyone can come along and enjoy the peace and quiet of the church. It is place of prayer, worship and friendship. You will always find a warm welcome at all of our services and events.

Able-bodied Volunteer Helpers wanted please The five church bells will be removed in the week beginning 9th April and start their journey to Loughborough for restoration and repair.

PLEASE …..We need volunteers for this week to assist the Master Bellhanger by: fetching and carrying things up and down the tower stairwell; climbing up to the belfry and onto the bell frame to help remove the fittings and clappers; using pulleys and chains to help lower the bells down. At times all the trapdoors will be open so volunteers will need to cope with looking down at a vertical drop. The tower does have a handrope and good lighting now but uneven steps and white washed walls. Dirty & dusty but rewarding work.

Final ever ringing on the existing bells Listen out on the evening of Thursday 5th April for the final ever ringing on the five bells by invited bellringers. It will be an informal event so there will be lots of starts, stops and changes of ringers and sounds. (advance warning for animal owners)

Coach Trip to see the two bells being cast – Thursday 26th April 2018 We have organised a coach to take a group to the Taylors Foundry in Loughborough to see the tenor bell being recast, take a tour of the works and museum, and see the new treble bell being cast. There are a few places remaining on the coach. It leaves the Green at the top of Church Lane at 09.45 am and leaves Loughborough at approximately 3.30 pm. There is no cost for the visit but you MUST follow the safety rules about stout (not fabric, no slits or holes in the uppers) fully-enclosed footwear or you will be refused entry into the Foundry. White clothes are not advised! You will also need to bring a packed lunch which can be eaten indoors on the Foundry site. Or email canonannettereed@gmail.com More events A new website for the church bells will be launched in February. Please look out for information on posters, Facebook and the Benefice website. This will be used to keep everybody informed with progress and with pictures.

Annette Reed and Alan Smith will be in school assembly on Tuesday 6th March to speak about the bell project.

The bells will be returning in July, dates to be confirmed, and we will need able-bodied volunteers again over ten days to assist with rebuilding the frame and fittings, as well as raising six bells.

There will be an informal celebration of the bells return and launch of the new CCTV at the All Ages Service on Sunday 9th September at 10.45 am. The CCTV will allow visitors to see the bells in action in the belfry, from the safety of the ground!

The formal Service of Blessing and Dedication of the bells by Bishop Stephen will be on October 16th at 7.00pm.

There will be a sale or auction of the bits and pieces removed from the bells and belfry, date and location to be organised. There will be an assortment of unique items that can be up-cycled into benchs (timber headstocks), door stops (forged wrought iron clappers), and many pieces of timber and wood that can be turned or carved into useful things.

There will be various occasions when the replaced bells will be rung for testing, as well as a Full Peal of three hours by the ringers who successfully completed the Quarter Peal.

GREAT PAXTON CHURCH 100 CLUB Graham Bevan wishes to say a big thank you to all the many villagers (old and new) who have generously supported Holy Trinity's 100 Club since its introduction in 2010. To date over £22,000 has been raised. Year 8 was exceptional, reaching a record 250 numbers (48 more than last year). £20 x 250 equals £5,000 (less £700.00 in prize money), which means a profit of £4,300, a respectful sum, but according to our latest accounts it cost £26,657.30 to keep our magnificent Saxon-Minster church open last year. That's a staggering £73.03 per day. We rely on collections, standing orders, donations, marriages, fundraising events, funerals, baptisms, a grant from the parish council towards churchyard upkeep and the 100 Club to keep afloat. Our main concerns are the cancellation of several monthly standing orders and a continuing shortfall in weekly collections.

Great Paxton Pre-school is a place which seeks to achieve high quality learning and development that is delivered to children in a professional, respectful and safe atmosphere. HONOURING GREAT PAXTON’S 1ST AND 2ND WORLD WAR HEROES Thank you all for coming to The Bell on the 17th January. It was a very enthusiastic group of about 12 people, in fact so enthusiastic that it was all a bit chaotic!

However, after introductions all round we heard from Roy whose existing research forms part of what is already known about the soldiers on our War Memorial. He gave us a quick rundown of the First World War battles and spoke about our soldiers in order of the date they were killed.

Then those people who wished to be Custodians of a Soldier chose the Name they wanted to be responsible for. Not all present wanted to take a soldier, as they wished to research the wounded survivor who previously lived in their house (Andy), or already had a family member to investigate (Ivan). Ivan has also taken the lead in researching the aircrew who died in the Second World War when the Lancaster crashed.

Of the eleven Names, six have been claimed leaving five more to be adopted

by Custodians. Please get in touch with either Andy Cowham or Jacqueline Wieczorek if you are interested in doing some research either online from home or using the resources at the Library. Don’t worry if you have never done this sort of investigation before, I’m sure there will be people to give you suggestions and help.

For starters we will give you the research already done.

We would also like people to investigate the other young men who returned alive.

Can we find out the names of all who went? We also know some houses in London Lane were built for returning

soldiers wounded in the war but as yet nothing more. Who were they, where did they come from, what are their stories?

Other people have said they will help in the arrangements to commemorate Remembrance Sunday in November. All kinds of tasks will be available as we start planning.

As well as the formal Service at our Holy Trinity Church in the morning, it is suggested there is an event at The Bell for lunch and later in the day. We would also like a parade of the youngsters in village groups to go from the Green to the Church as used to be held. We would like the soldiers that are to be remembered to be seen by many and it is suggested that we create a combined memorial display on the Green at the top of Church Lane for a few weeks around November 11th.

Ideas are needed and plans need to be made and if money is required, grants and donations applied for. November is not far away and will come very quickly.

We hope we can also put something outside the houses where we know a soldier lived. We know that Lionel Cane, the son of the Vicar Reverend Cane, lived in the Vicarage which is now Paxton Place and Major Edmund Cardell lived at Petherwin. Maybe some of the new research will tell us where the other young men lived, and maybe the location can be identified even if the actual building has gone. As most of the Village was along what is now the High Street there will have been many changes in a hundred years.

It was suggested that the names of the Lancaster crew are read out on Remembrance Sunday since although they

didn’t live in Great Paxton, their memory needs to become part of our village history. A physical memorial has been suggested somewhere in the village, and maybe a plaque in the church as well. This will need funding and probably planning permission, as well as design and commissioning etc. It’s not strictly part of 2018, but that’s not a reason to delay.

We discussed holding separate meetings from the local history group but it was decided to combine the groups as it’s all Village History and of interest to all of us.

We might even be able to make a booklet of what is discovered, so it is not lost again.

Therefore the next meeting will be at The Bell on Wednesday 21st February at 7.30, followed by Wednesday 14th March. As the research by Custodians is already underway we need to discuss and decide what we are going to do for the displays and for November 11th and get that organised. So please put your thinking caps on and bring lots of ideas to the meeting.

Please tell others what we are doing and encourage them to join us. There were over 20 names commenting on Andy's initial Facebook post on the village community page so it would be good to get these people involved as well.

There was general discussion on planning issues at the Parish Council meeting in January. The Council was reminded how important it was to make observations (on design issues in small settlements) in the new draft Huntingdonshire Local Plan to 2036 and particularly on applications for development in the village given the likelihood that, in future, there would be less opportunity to make representations to meetings of the Development Control Committee at Pathfinder House. Any objections raised on future planning applications had to be supported by material and sound reasons. Councillors also heard that the District Council is also to become increasingly cautious when determining applications for development in locations where flooding has previously been a problem.

Planning of another sort! The Parish Council looked at the Cambridgeshire Local Council Development Plan 20172022 produced following a survey of Councillors and Clerks in 2017. This had concluded that all Parishes were facing the same sort of challenges including devolution of services, lack of support, reduced budgets, and planning and highways concerns. However, Councillors did recognise that, although they were working hard on a number of fronts, it was also important to continue to take advantage of training and development opportunities when these arose as they did provide valuable insight and network opportunities and helped to raise the profile of the Parish locally.

The Parish Council has approved an updated feasibility study on an application

for funding towards highways improvements on the High Street. If approved by the County Council, the Scheme will comprise two build out features much like those already in place in The Offords. A final decision on whether this scheme will go ahead will be made by the County Council in March.

The Parish Council is aware of other ideas to improve safety in the village including a zebra crossing across the High Street and a 20mph limit on roads near to the school and will look at these again during the process for the next round of highways improvements in the Autumn.

Following comments made during ‘public speaking’ time at the meeting, the Council has followed up the suggestion that there should be a ‘dropped kerb’ close to the Community Shop to assist easy access by mobility scooters and pushchairs. Good news - the County Council has suggested that this work will be authorised early in the new financial year – after April.

Still on highways issues - please continue to report any new potholes you see through the CCC system http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/high wayfaults More good news – the Parish Council has secured grant funding from the Government towards the full purchase cost of a new Website. The grant will ensure that the Council complies with legal requirements for publication of local council information. A final decision on the best package for the Great Paxton community will be made at the March meeting.

Other News: The Parish Council • is awaiting prices from the County Council for new signs from the High Street to direct visitors to the Holy Trinity Church; • has given the go ahead for tree maintenance works on parish land – hopefully you will already have started to notice the difference; and • on the understanding that there would be no cost to the Parish Council, has agreed to act as lead Council on an application for funding for the purchase of speed watch kit that can also be used by Graveley, The Offords, Toseland and Yelling Parishes.

SOME BRITISH WOMEN GOT THE VOTE 100 YEARS AGO Tuesday 6 February 1918 some British women were first guaranteed the right to vote. The Representation of the People Act was adopted in February 1918, eventually paving the way for universal women’s suffrage in the country.

But the landmark act only granted a sliver of the UK’s female population the right to cast a vote. Under the 1918 Representation of the People Act, women over the age of 30 who either owned land themselves or were married to men with property were given the right to vote The same act also dropped the voting age for men from 30 to 21.

For the next decade the number of women’s suffrage campaigners grew as they demonstrated for equal voting rights under two main factions.

In 1928 under the Equal Franchise Act, women in the UK were granted equal voting rights increasing the number of

eligible female voters from 8 million to 15 million.

New Zealand was the first country in the world to secure women’s voting rights under law in 1893.

In 1902 some Australian women got the right to vote In Europe, Finland became the first European country to introduce women’s suffrage in 1906.

Women in Switzerland were the last in Europe excluded from their voting rights until 1971.

Just a few snippets of information from HDC • Consultants have been engaged by HDC to address the situation of Affordable Housing. Just to briefly clarify - Affordable Housing is managed through a Housing Agency or by shared purchase ALSO Housing that is affordable 1/2/3 beds smaller properties for sale to first time buyers or residents wishing to downsize.

• Proposals have been passed for a new Crematorium and Cemetery north of Huntingdon - this will be a large development with many other benefits.

• The Local Plan has been passed by Full Council at HDC and is out for consultation by Parish Councils and the general public.

This will be my last article for Paxton Post as I am retiring from Huntingdonshire District Council after 15yrs. I have appreciated and felt honoured to have been your Councillor and enjoyed my work particularly my two years as Chairman of the Council.

Cambridgeshire County Council sets its 2018/19 budget At the county council meeting on February 6th Cambridgeshire County council agreed its 2018/19 budget. Members had heard that despite investing in a range of innovative and ambitious transformation and efficiency plans, without which the situation could have been much worse, the County Council was still projecting a budget gap for 2018/19 of £4.3m even after including a proposed 2% Adult Social Care Precept.

At the meeting Members voted in favour of a budget proposal which added an additional 2.99% council tax increase to its 2018/19 budget. Opinion was divided on how the money raised should be spent.

The Adult Social Care Precept increase of 2% and the Council Tax increase of 2.99% will add £23.76 annually (46p weekly) and £35.64 annually (68p weekly) respectively to a Band D property, before other precepting authorities such as city and district councils, fire and police add their amounts.

The Rainbows have been busy completing the Cambs West County Challenge Badge so far this term. We've been creating new materials to help us recruit more leaders / adult helpers for Rainbows and Brownies. We had great fun filming a video with the girls writing the story board, directing and acting.

There's still a little more editing work to do before we can share our film debut!

We'll be hosting a tea party in coming weeks to say thank you to people who have made a difference to our community and will also be joining with other units for World Thinking Day to complete our badge.

We've had fun 'travelling' north of the border for Burns Night, got our hands messy with a science night and will be heading east for a Japenese Doll Festival and getting chocolately during an easter themed scavenger hunt next month.

Girls from both Rainbows and Brownies will be joining in with the Division World Thinking Day event in February with Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from across St Neots. World Thinking Day is a special date in the Guiding calendar.

On 22 February each year, Guiding members and Girl Scouts across the world think of each other (there are over 10m members) and of their commitment to international friendship and understanding​. The girls will be taking part in a variety of activities that reflect the 2018 theme of Impact.

The Brownies were delighted to receive post from Number 10 Downing Street and the House of Commons just before Christmas. We sent the leaders of all

major parties a letter last year which shared the girls thoughts on issues that were important to them after exploring politics and the importance of having a voice around the time of the election. It was great to receive responses and hear what the MPs thought of what the girls had to say.

This term the Brownies have been busy working on their 'Right to Learn' or 'Right to Work Together' badges. We've been understanding more about our rights, and importantly, our responsibilities as global citizens through fun, games and lots of healthy debate. We've been really impressed at how engaged they've been with the issues they chose to look at and how fired up they've been about injustices or things that they can influence within their own world.

We're still involved in trying our activities from the new programme which launches later this year - hammers and nails will be out as we get building with wood and we'll be trying to outdo the Rainbows with out chocolate scavenger hunt too!

We are now getting started on the preparations for Jack’s Family Fun Day which will be held on Saturday 30th June from 12.00 pm onwards and will have the usual BBQ, stalls, games and football tournament. What we would like is extra helpers either before the day or on the day and would welcome all help that anyone can give. The earlier we get started the better day we can put together.

We are also hoping to move on afterwards to have a Music Festival but really need to have feedback from people to know if this would be a well supported event and if this is something the village would like to have. We do have a few people already that are voluntarily giving their time to come and play if we go ahead with it but again we would need help with this as it will be a long day and huge amount of planning.

We are pleased to inform you that as of 1st April 2018 the Bell will be under new ownership. Our good friends Andy and Carol Dennis, who have been our partners for the last 18 months have agreed to take over sole ownership of the business from that date.

All of us in The Black Family Partnership would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to those who have supported us during the last 5 years. It has been quite an adventure for us as novices to the business and we would like also to thank everyone for their generous encouragement along the way as we have learned the ropes.

The Bell is a delightful village pub and we will all have great memories of our time at the helm. Hopefully we have made some contribution to its continued future.
