ESTONIA – TAKING TRADITIONS TO NEW HORIZONS The sea partnership between Estonia and Germany goes back to the heydays of the medieval union in politics and trade – namely the Hanseatic League. Tallinn, which was called Reval at that time, was the most eastern bastion and trade location of the Hanseatic League. Salt from Novgorod or furs from Russia started their journey to the trading ports in Northern and Western Europe from Tallinn. Even today the harbours in Tallinn and Muuga are together the largest in the Baltic Sea – both for transporting goods and passengers, and the Estonian shipping company, Tallink, is the largest vessel enterprise in the Baltic Sea region – both with regard to transporting goods and passengers. Besides several transit harbours, Estonia has around 100 smaller harbours, of which approximately 25 are able to accommodate larger sailing yachts. Estonia’s approximately 4000 km coastline offers not only sailing trips but also endless opportunities for surfing, water jetting, kayak and canoe tours and diving. A life at and with the sea has become a lifestyle for tens of thousands of Estonians, and for some tourism enterprises it is their main business pillar. It is not only the historic Hanseatic League that connects our two countries. Thanks to the common history throughout the centuries and the cultural exchange, Estonians practice a strong work ethic and have acquired “German” punctuality. Prussian virtues are not considered old-fashioned up here in the north, but they have rather helped us rise to the level we are at today within the short period since the collapse of a nightmare – namely the Soviet Union. Estonia is a small and, at the same time, a strong and reliable partner, a member of the EU, NATO and a natural partner within the Euro zone.
