TIPS FOR SELF CARE FOR ACTIVISTS TO AVOID BURNOUT

Young people across the globe have been leading the way with their activism for social justice However sometimes the weight of these issues can become too much to bear or just be draining due to the seemingly relentless work that needs to be done

Burnout can come in many forms, but the main symptoms of activism burnout can include: anxiety, cynicism, sadness, sleeplessness, inability to concentrate and lack of motivation.

To avoid burnout, an essential part of any activist's journey is to practice self care. Not only is looking after yourself important, it will also mean additional energy and motivation to keep fighting the good fight

Here are some top tips for self care:

Look after your body. It is the space you inhabit and eating well, making sure you get enough sleep and getting outside often for exercise will help you take care of it

Be mindful Practice mindfulness when you eat, and when you ’ re out and about. Connecting to the everyday present can help you shift your state of mind and refocus on the positive and the now Celebrate your wins Document each little thing you have achieved, not matter how small. You can do this through a journal or online on social media Doing this also helps you look back when you ’ re not feeling motivated and helps you take pride in what you have done so far

Speak to others Take support from your fellow activists, feel inspired, or simply talk through what’s happening. Talking things out is really important to prevent mental exhaustion

5 Take time offline. Though social media is really important, and super helpful for activists, the unedited waves of information and negativity can be too much Turn the phone off and go for a mindful walk, notice the sights and sounds of the seasons and immerse yourself in nature.

6.Have boundaries. Activism and achieving things takes a long time, it’s never a sprint to success, so it is important to develop boundaries to keep yourself safe and well. If you ’ re feeling tired or low, it is okay to stop and set that boundary for yourself, giving yourself time to recharge

7.,Do things you enjoy, Make time for things you find fun, be it reading a book, walking the dog or painting a picture Set dedicated time aside for these things that help bring positivity into your life.
