elcome to the Contra Costa Labor Council’s 23rd Annual Labor to Labor Dinner. We are overjoyed to have you with us in person (with your masks on) at the beautiful campus of St Mary’s College.

Tonight, we celebrate our movement and recommit ourselves to the work in front of us. In this time of chaos, insurrection, misinformation, and an ongoing pandemic, we are fortunate to have the American Labor Movement. Our fight is not with each other, but with unchecked greed, racist systems, and exploitation.

Just this year, we all witnessed billionaires taking joy rides into outer space while knowing that their workers are denied bathroom breaks. We saw a hyper acceleration of the exploitative app-based gig-economy and Wall Street greed while working people struggle to keep their families housed and fed. The current system is failing working people and the only way to stop this strange despotic future is with a strong Labor movement -- which is why we should be proud of the work we do in Contra Costa.

Since the start of the pandemic, we passed Measure X and secured funding to retain and expand the services upon which we all depend. We demanded hazard pay for frontline grocery workers, advocated for tenant projections, and worked with other Councils to provide immediate aid to workers in need. We made sure that workers had access to lifesaving and effective vaccines. We helped stop extremists from taking over California. The Labor Council also gave space to have challenging but vital conversations around climate change, the future of work, public safety and rooting racism from our movement and community. Currently, the Labor Council is standing with over 900 workers at HelloFresh in Richmond who are organizing with UNITE-HERE 2850 to demand a voice at the largest meal kit company in America! That is how we build power for working families, by standing together and changing lives.

Tonight, we allow ourselves a moment to pause and reflect about all that we have accomplished.

Tonight, we honor the best in our movement. Tonight, we celebrate an icon of social change, activism and the labor movement, Danny Glover! We honor Tim Jefferies, whose leadership, activism and commitment to working people is showcased daily. We recognize Bambi Marien for her steadfast commitment to defending grocery workers struggling through a once-in-a-generation pandemic. We are proud to stand with SEIU 2015, whose members’ professionalism has enabled so many of our loved ones to remain healthy, safe and loved. And are fortunate to have community partners like Mariana Moore, whose mission to end poverty in Contra Costa County is a shared goal and responsibility for us all.

Timothy Jefferies

Boilermakers Lodge 549

orn in Salisbury, North Carolina, Timothy Jefferies went to public schools in the Rowan County School System, after which he joined the United States Marin Corps and served from 1986 until 1990.

In 1990, Jefferies began working the assembly line for Apple Computers in Fremont as a temp and was never hired on as a permanent employee.

While working as a temp for Apple, Jefferies attended Sequoia Institute for Mechanics and then worked various jobs as a mechanic.

It was through this work that Jefferies found his way to the Boilermakers Lodge 549 and began as an apprentice in 2008. After only graduating from his apprenticeship in 2012, Jefferies was assigned Apprentice Coordinator in 2013. When Jefferies took over as Apprentice Coordinator there were 40 apprentices. He handed over the program to Randy Thomas, the current Apprentice Coordinator with 100 apprentices, and today they have over 173 apprentices.

Moving up the ranks, Jefferies was appointed Business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer in 2019 and elected as Business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer by his membership in 2020. Jefferies has signed PLAs for numerous cities across Northern California. Though he has not been a part of any negotiation team for a PLA, he has negotiated agreements for their 12 shops and has been a part of negotiating their local collective bargaining agreement.

Jefferies serves on the Contra Costa County Central Labor Council as Vice-President. He is also an Executive Board member of the Contra Costa Building & Construction Trades Council. He is a Trustee of Boilermakers’ Lodge 549’s apprenticeship training trust, and recently became a delegate of the Contra Costa County Workforce Development board.

SB-54 opened his eyes to the political power we the people can insert into politics. Jefferies walked the state capital to push this Assembly Bill forward. For him, when it passed, the amount of people’s lives that were changed was overwhelming and invigorating. Jefferies notes that “Workers that had worked in the gas and oil industries for 8-10 years, were now able to purchase their first homes after being a union member, in some cases in as little as, one year after becoming a union Boilermaker. Since then, the desire to duplicate such a movement is a driving factor for him to continue pushing forward.”

During all this time, Jefferies continued to be motivated by opportunities to help just one more person, to better their lives for themselves and their families. This is carried out in his work and in his community service volunteerism for (among others) Salvation Army of Antioch, Contra Costa Food Bank, and as a Coach for the Little League Baseball.

Jefferies has been married for 32 years to the love of his life, Michele Smith-Jefferies, they have three children and Jefferies has two from an earlier relationship.

Bambi Marien UFCW Local 5

B

ambi Marien was born and raised in Concord, California. She was brought up in a multi-ethnic home, by hard-working parents, her mother an immigrant from Peru, and her father a first-generation, Hungarian. As a teenager, Bambi spent summers in Peru, learning the culture and connecting to her Peruvian heritage. Bambi comes from a union family, both parents were members of Unite Here Local 2, then her mother joined SEIU when she went to work for the County, where she later retired. Through their hard work, sacrifices, and good Union Jobs, they were able to provide her with a stable upbringing and load the foundation for developing a future union activist.

She attended the University of Utah, to pursue a Psychology degree, then returned to California, to further her education, at JFK University. It was then she began working with UFCW 5 and got a glimpse of what was possible when workers organize to build power and her love for the labor movement began. Soon after, she was taken under the wing of the late, Christopher Gray, who saw her potential as a union leader and encouraged her to continue on that path. In 2010 at 28 years old, Bambi became the youngest female to hold the Union Representative position in Martinez. It was through the mentorship of Oscar Orozco, UFCW Northern Director, that she found her place amongst the UFCW 5 family.

Currently, Bambi sits on the Contra Costa Labor Council’s, Executive Board, trains UFCW international workers across the country to organize, while making member’s needs a priority and workers’ rights at the forefront. She believes spreading the word is the key to strengthen Union activism and remains committed to build power in workers, activating members, organizing non-union workers, and partnering with unions, organizations, and community leaders to improve the lives of all workers and their families.

Bambi is a loving daughter, sister, wife, and mother of two amazing children. She is proudly raising them as she was raised, in a multicultural, stable, nurturing environment, and providing them with the tools necessary to become our leaders of tomorrow.

SEIU 2015

S

EIU Local 2015 is the largest union of long term care workers in the United States. Comprised of Nursing Home, Private Agency, and In-Home Support Services workers from across California, SEIU 2015 represents over 400,000 workers, including over 23,000 workers here in Contra Costa County. Where in-home care providers were originally excluded from the National Labor Relations Act, Local 2015 was finally organized in 2015. With a membership that is 62% people of color and almost 90% women, 2015 is committed to gender equality and is an avowed anti-racist organization. Our “For All” agenda includes Justice for All, Democracy for All, Unions for All, and Long Term Care for All. 2015 members provide care for a wide variety of our community members including people with disabilities, elders in the community, and people in rehabilitation and convalescent homes.

Of course, for care workers, there has been no working remotely during the pandemic. In-home care providers continued to take clients to their doctor visits, grocery shopping, and provide help around the home. Our nursing home members continued working in some of the most dangerous settings in the country to ensure that our most vulnerable community members continued to receive the care they deserved.

Through all of this, SEIU 2015 members continued to bring the fire to contract campaigns, electoral and legislative campaigns, and bringing our collective power to bear in every arena. We stood up to nursing home and IHSS management to ensure safe working conditions, fair pay, and dignity in the work place. We advocated for new laws regulating nursing homes and expanding accessibility of long term care. We put our members on city councils across the state, and stood in solidarity with other unions to say Black Lives Matter, Housing is a Human right, and No Human Being is Illegal. Local 2015 is humbled to be honored by the Contra Costa Labor Council as we know that we haven’t accomplished anything on our own, but always with the solidarity and support of our siblings in the labor movement.

Mariana Moore

Senior Director, Ensuring Opportunity Campaign

M

ariana Moore is Senior Director of the Ensuring Opportunity Campaign to End Poverty in Contra Costa, which is housed at RCF Connects. Ensuring Opportunity is a cross-sector initiative that engages residents, elected officials, community-based organizations, labor organizations, policy makers, businesses, academia, faith-centered organizations, and philanthropy in a collective effort to eliminate poverty in our community through effective policy and systems change. Before co-founding Ensuring Opportunity, Mariana served as director of the Human Services Alliance of Contra Costa, and worked as a strategy and coaching consultant to organizations and coalitions throughout the Bay Area.

Since its founding six years ago, Ensuring Opportunity has worked closely with the Central Labor Council and local labor organizations on a number of important campaigns, including advocating for more inclusive and equitable County budgets, in partnership with the Contra Costa Budget Justice Coalition; reimagining local public safety systems; and successfully advocating to increase CalFresh staffing positions and pay in order to expand community access to vital food benefits.

In 2019, Ensuring Opportunity and the Central Labor Council embarked on their most ambitious collaboration yet. Mariana and Central Labor Council Executive Director Josh Anijar were appointed by the County Board of Supervisors to co-chair a Community Needs Assessment process. The resulting report made a strong case for the need for a new countywide half-cent sales tax to support the county hospital, fire protection, safety net programs, and other core county services.

Mariana and Josh then joined with leaders from SEIU, Fire, and other labor organizations to plan, fund, and execute the successful Measure X sales tax campaign, which voters passed by a healthy margin in November 2020. The sales tax went into effect April 1, 2021, and will yield an estimated $112 million in new revenue for the county for the current fiscal year, and $90 million annually for the following 19 years.

Mariana currently chairs the Measure X Community Advisory Board, which was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to identify the top 10 current unmet community needs in Contra Costa and to develop recommendations to the Supervisors on funding priorities and strategies to meet those needs. The Community Advisory Board’s 27 members include labor representation from Fire, SEIU, and Public Defenders.

Danny Glover

A

ctor, producer, activist, and humanitarian Danny Glover has been a commanding presence on screen, stage and television for more than 33 years. As an actor, his film credits range from the blockbuster Lethal Weapon franchise to smaller independent features, some of which Glover also produced. In recent years he has starred in an array of motion pictures including the critically acclaimed Dreamgirls directed by Bill Condon and in the futuristic 2012 for director Roland Emmerich. In addition to his film work, Glover is highly sought after as a public speaker, delivering inspiring addresses and moving performances in such diverse venues as college campuses, union rallies and business conventions.

Glover has gained respect for his wide-reaching community activism and philanthropic efforts, with a particular emphasis on advocacy for the Labor Movement, economic justice and access to health care and, education programs in the United States and Africa. For these efforts Glover received a 2006 DGA Honor and was honored with a 2011 “Pioneer Award” from the National Civil Rights Museum.

Internationally Glover has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program from 1998-2004, focusing on issues of poverty, disease and economic development in frica, Latin America and the Caribbean. Glover was presented in 2011 with the prestigious Medaille des Arts et des Letters from the French Ministry of Culture and was honored with a Tribute at the Deauville International Film Festival. Currently Glover serves as UNICEF Ambassador.

In 2005 Glover co-founded NY based Louverture Films with writer/producer Joslyn Barnes. The company is dedicated to the development and production of films of historical relevance, social purpose, commercial value and artistic integrity. Among the films Glover has executive produced at Louverture are: the César-nominated Bamako, Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Oscar® and Emmy® nominated Trouble The Water, the award winning The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975, and the 2012 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner The House I Live In. He has also associate produced Elia Suleiman’s The Time That Remains, and the 2010 Cannes Palme d’Or winner Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives.

A native of San Francisco, Glover trained at the Black Actors’ Workshop of the American Conservatory Theatre. It was his Broadway debut in Fugard’s Master Harold…and the Boys that brought him to national recognition and led director Robert Benton to cast him in his first leading role in 1984’s Academy Award-nominated Best Picture, Places in the Heart. The following year Glover starred in two more Best Picture nominated films: Peter Weir’s Witness and Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple. In 1987 Glover partnered with Mel Gibson in the first Lethal Weapon film and went on the star in three hugely successful Lethal Weapon sequels.

Glover has also invested his talents in more personal projects including the award-winning To Sleep With Anger which he executive produced and for which he won and Independent Spirit Award for Best Actor; Bopha!¸Manderlay, Missing in America and the film version of Athol Fugard’s play Boseman and Lena. He also starred in The Royal Tenenbaums, Saw, Shooter, and Death at a Funeral.

We are proud to present him with our Champion of Labor Award for his bold and outspoken work on behalf of the unorganized workers of Amazon and many others.
