WELCOME Dear Sisters, Brothers, and Friends of Labor, It seems a lifetime ago, yet we can all agree that 2020 was a year of unprecedented challenges, and we are still feeling the effect of the Election and we are still in the midst of the pandemic and trying to work our way out.

The Alameda Labor Council worked all along to meet the challenges as they arose, with creativity and tenacity, because our Delegates had the strength and the courage to take risks and fight hard.

Tonight we are gathering to celebrate our Family of Delegates and their turnout for the Our “Hello Detroit, Oakland Calling” phone banks, which helped deliver the State of Michigan to President Biden. Additionally, we applaud their tenacity to see that we could and did win hazard pay for grocery workers in more cities than any CLC in the country! We toast them for delivering Return-To-Work Rights for Hotel Workers. We say together, “sí, se puede!” for our teachers who won their strike for better schools, and our hospital strike which changed people’s lives.

Lastly, our affiliates and their members are prepared to be building the best unionized ballpark in America and our pandemic heroes are being treated like heroes.

We are grateful to Signature Development Group for allowing us to be together in one space, safely and in such a beautiful waterfront setting.

scholarship recipient Xitlali Guadalupe Sanchez Since 2018, Xitlali has served as a political organizer and volunteer with the Alameda Labor Council. She is a member of HERE Local 2850 and sits on the executive board; she recently became the Co-Chair of the Alameda Climate Caucus. She was raised in Alameda where she grew up watching her mother fighting day and night for labor, immigrant & women's rights. Her mother, Vice-President of Local 2850, passed away in 2011. Today Xitlali stands in solidarity with all workers to continue the fight for a better future for all.

Richard L. Trumka

(July 24, 1949 – August 5, 2021) Richard L. Trumka was president of the 12.5-million-member AFL-CIO from 2009 until his death on August 5, 2021. An outspoken advocate for social and economic justice, Trumka was the nation’s clearest voice on the critical need to ensure that all workers have a good job and the power to determine their wages and working conditions.

Throughout his lifetime, he had many successes rising up from the rank and file as a coal miner to being elected president of the United Mine Workers of America union in 1982, to being elected president of the AFL-CIO in 2009.

Trumka hated racism and sexism and other bigotry, something he referred to as the “isms.”

He was the son of immigrants and when someone attacked immigrants he saw them attacking his mother, father and neighbors, and responded accordingly. He was recognized for his work on behalf of all peoples’ rights, nationally and internationally, including having been awarded the Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Award in 1990.

Trumka understood his mission was more than political, more than economic. That he was lifting up the moral value of solidarity that he learned from his parents, from his community, from his sisters and brothers in the Mine Workers, and from his Catholic parish in Nemacolin.

What is Richard Trumka’s legacy to the labor movement? The labor movement as a movement. An organizing movement. The labor movement as a force for racial and gender justice. The labor movement as a powerful voice in leading the direction of the American economy—the counterweight to Wall Street, big corporations and billionaires. The force for justice and a voice at work. The idea that the labor movement must be above all prepared to fight, to risk everything for working people. And above all, the embodiment of solidarity as a way of being—an antithesis to greed and selfishness. A path to hope and light and love. He lived it every moment of his life, and workers around the world are better for it.
