ALAMEDA COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY PRESENTS THE ND Saturday, September 21, 2024
Dear Fellow Democrats, Friends, Allies, and Supporters,
Welcome to the 52nd Alameda County Democratic Party’s Unity Dinner.
It is so wonderful to see so many of us gathering from throughout our County to share this evening of celebration of our unity and commitment to electing Democrats up and down the ballot. From AC to DC, we are Truly Leading the Way! Our evening Co-Chairs, Sean Dugar, Robin Torello, and John Smith have been working tirelessly to see that all details were tended to and ensure this evening’s success, and I am so grateful to them.
While we have been working hard all year in anticipation of the November 5th election, as individual Clubs to meet the diverse needs of our members and activists, let’s be real: July 21, 2024 brought an unanticipated and pivotal shift in everything for all of us. We could not be more excited to have a daughter of Alameda County, Vice-President Kamala Harris, at the top of the ticket with Governor Tim Walz as her running mate.
We are now fully charged with an infrastructure to keep us all moving towards the November 5th finish line!
On September 1st – the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend – we had hoped to see 80 volunteers at our Oakland Democratic Headquarters opening. Instead, we had more than 200 replies and a full house of people prepared to dial for dollars, knock on doors, text, and do all else in our power to mobilize voters – for our important local elections and for the national ticket.
Our Call to Action gets out because of our longtime collaboration with local elected leaders and sister organizations. Some of them are being recognized tonight for their incredible and consistent work. We are thrilled to take time to express our appreciation to them: Our Lifetime Achievement Awardees: Hon. Barbara Lee, Hon. Nancy Skinner, and Hon. Keith Carson along with our Community Partner Awardee the Alameda Labor Council. We also will recognize the East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club, United for Sunol Glen, and Hon. Karen Weinstein for their above and beyond answer to our Call to Action. Together, they fill out a full roster of leaders who go beyond the call of duty to move a democratic agenda forward.
Tonight, we will also take a moment to pay tribute to two very special women who moved mountains and left this world earlier this year, Hon. Ellen Corbett and Peggy Moore. Both have left indelible imprints on our lives – policy and politics.
It is wonderful to see you here – I look forward to time with you, to celebrating our honorees, and to getting back on the trail tomorrow and for the next 45 days – from AC to DC!
In solidarity,
Igor Tregub, Chair
Alameda County Democratic Party

As a steadfast partner in the fight for workers' rights, equality, and social justice, the Alameda Labor Council celebrates the vision and leadership of this year ’ s honorees. Together, we are building a brighter future for all.
For your legacy of public service and dedication to improving the lives of Alameda County residents
Hon. Senator Nancy Skinner
For your visionary leadership on progressive policies that address climate justice, economic equity, and public safety
For your unwavering commitment to justice, peace, and being a tireless advocate for the underrepresented in our nation
Congresswoman Barbara Lee has been representing California’s 12th District (formerly 13th) since 1998. She is the highest ranking African American woman appointed to Democratic Leadership, serving as Co-Chair of the Policy and Steering Committee. She also serves on the Budget Committee and the powerful Appropriations Committee, which oversees all federal government spending.
As a single mother raising two sons, Congresswoman Lee attended Mills College and received public assistance while building a better life for her family. As president of Mills College’s Black Student Union, she invited Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to Congress, to speak on campus. As a result of this meeting, Congresswoman Lee registered to vote for the first time and worked on Congresswoman Chisholm’s historic presidential campaign, including serving as her delegate at the 1972 Democratic National Convention in Miami, FL.
Congresswoman Lee received her Master’s of Social Work from the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in psychiatric social work. During her graduate work, Congresswoman Lee founded the Community Health Alliance for Neighborhood Growth and Education (CHANGE, Inc.) which provided mental health services to many of the East Bay’s most vulnerable individuals.
Continuing her life of public service, Congresswoman Lee served in the State Assembly from 1990 until 1996 when she was elected to the State Senate. She remained a strong advocate for women’s rights and the rights of African-Americans, Latinos, LGBTQI, and other marginalized communities passing legislation to put an end to the unjust “three strikes law” and passing the first California Violence Against Women Act among others until she was elected to U.S. Congress in 1998.
Congresswoman Lee’s historic sole vote against the blank check given to President George W. Bush propelled her to the international stage, guided by her conscience, brought about the community chant and slogan, “Barbara Lee Speaks for Me!” She continues to fight against injustices and to see that the legislature acts to end poverty. Her victories are more numerous than space allows, and the 12th District has been incredibly fortunate to have her as their representative for these past 26 years.
Congresswoman Lee was born in segregated El Paso, TX and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School, where she was taught by the Sisters of Loretto, an order dedicated to promoting justice and peace.
A social justice advocate, clean energy and climate change trailblazer and accomplished legislator, Senator Nancy Skinner was first elected to the state Senate in 2016 after completing three terms in the state Assembly. Senator Skinner currently serves as chair of the Senate HousingCommittee and of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, and is chair emeritus of the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee.
Senator Skinner has authored groundbreaking laws including SB 206, the Fair Pay to Play Act, making California the first state to give college athletes the right to earn money from their name, image, and likeness; SB 1421, opening up police misconduct records for the first time in 40 years; and SB 1437, overhauling California’s unjust felony murder rule. While in the Assembly, she authored AB 153, requiring Amazon and other internet retailers to collect sales tax; AB 1014, the first in the nation gun violence restraining order otherwise known as ‘red flag’ law; and AB 1930, giving college students access to federal food assistance, which has now been copied by most every state in the country. In 2021, Senator Skinner led the successful campaign to make California the first state in nation to make free school meals available to all public-school children.
Senator Skinner began her public service in 1984 as the first student elected to the Berkeley City Council. On the council, thenCouncilmember Skinner introduced the nation’s first Styrofoam ban and co-founded an international association, ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, which now includes 2,500 local and regional governments in over 125 countries. Senator Skinner’s work at ICLEI led to the initiation of the Cities for Climate Protection program, which engaged hundreds of cities worldwide to take action to stop climate change.
Senator Skinner is a past member of the East Bay Regional Park District board, a former small business owner, and an active advocate to increase the number of women in elected office. She served on the Board of the East Bay Women’s Political Caucus and launched the Women in Power PAC to support Democratic women running for state office.
Senator Skinner is a graduate of UC Berkeley, earning both a BS in Natural Resource Sciences and an MA in Education. She has been recognized many times for her leadership and commitment to the betterment of our communities. Her favorite quote, and a guiding light for her is from Howard Zinn, “To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, and kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places- and there are so many- where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.”
First elected in 1992, Supervisor Keith Carson has served as a member of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors – representing the 5th District for thirty-two years. He has served on a platform dedicated to inclusive and accessible government. The 5th District include the cities of Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Piedmont, and large portions of Oakland, namely the West Oakland, North Oakland, Rockridge, and Montclair neighborhoods, as well as portions of the Dimond, Bella Vista, and San Antonio districts.
Supervisor Carson works to bring together people who have a wealth of talent and creative resources to address our shared problems within the numerous areas including access to health care, ending poverty, homelessness, crime, improving business retention, and addressing the scarcity of jobs in our communities.
Supervisor Carson chairs several Alameda County committees and organizations including the East Bay Economic Development Alliance (East Bay EDA), one of the largest business organizations consisting of public/private partnership serving the San Francisco East Bay. Their mission is to establish the East Bay as a world-recognized location to grow businesses, attract capital and create quality jobs. He is also the Chair of the Alameda County Budget Work Group Committee, the Alameda County Personnel, Administration and Legislation Committee, and a member of the Alameda County Health Committee.
Supervisor Carson represents the Alameda County Board of Supervisors on the Board of Directors for numerous organizations. He lives unapologetically through his identity as an African-American, and he feels that by gearing his attention to the needs of one marginalized group, he’s much more receptive to others, citing LGBTQ and disabled communities as examples of constituencies for whom attention to their concerns have made the country stronger overall.
Supervisor Carson’s eye has always been on the future and to use county government to make life better for everyone. Supervisor Carson said, “I’ve been blessed to be placed in a position to be in the room where I can lend a voice to trying to figure out how we move forward,” he said. “I feel so blessed that I have the ability to do this work.”
Supervisor Carson attended the John F. Kennedy School of Law and earned a Master of Public Administration from California State University Hayward and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.
Supervisor Carson is married to Maria Carson and is the father of two adult children; he also has three grandchildren. He hails from Berkeley, California.
Founded in 1901, the Alameda Labor Council was chartered by the AFL-CIO as the regional body for labor unity in 1958.
Today, the Council serves as an umbrella organization coordinating political, community and educational programs for more than 135 unions. Representing 135,000 workers in healthcare, transportation, education, construction, manufacturing, and service, the Alameda Labor Council organizes and runs actions to lift communities.
The mission of the Alameda Labor Council, AFL-CIO is to improve the lives of working families by bringing economic and social justice to workplaces and communities. To accomplish this mission, they work to:
• Build a broad movement of workers by helping workers join and form unions.
• Create sound policies to strengthen the voice of working families.
• Improve our communities, state, and nation.
• Support workers as they bargain with employers to improve living and working conditions.
The Council’s Community Services Program builds stronger communities, creates greater civic engagement, and provides services to families in crisis. The program builds bridges between employers, working people, and the community and develops proactive approaches to address the economic challenges facing working families.
Another component of the Council is Creating Political Power. Recognizing that working families need political leaders who will champion quality jobs, protect vital public services, and balance budgets equitably. The Council provides the “people power” that helps elect better leaders.
The Alameda Labor Council is a stalwart partner of the Alameda County Democratic Party and we are proud to present them with a 2024 Community Partner Award.
Ellen Corbett
Ellen Corbett was elected to the East Bay Regional Parks Board of Directors in November 2016. She was the Board member representing Ward 4, and previously was the majority leader of the California State Senate, representing the 10th District.
Ellen was first elected to the state Senate in 2006 and reelected in 2010. Director Corbett was a member of the California State Assembly (1998 – 2004), a San Leandro City Council Member and Mayor of San Leandro. She worked as an attorney, community college professor, and civic activist.
Director Corbett was born in Oakland and her hometown was San Leandro. She attended Chabot Community College and California State University, East Bay, and earned a bachelor of science degree in political science from UC Davis and a law degree from the McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific.
Ellen was a quintessential public servant. She gave of herself with skill, passion, and compassion. She mentored many and paved the way for others to be at tables where they had been kept from previously. She is survived by her son and she will be missed.
Peggy Moore was, among many roles she played, the Principal and Co-founder of Hope Action Change, an executive coaching and organizational development consultant firm she launched with her wife, Hope Wood in 2019. Peggy's career spanned over thirty years of organizational leadership, political engagement, government and public a airs as well as organizing work within the political, corporate, and nonprofit arenas.
Peggy had a strong reputation for being a compelling public speaker and for getting the job done, especially when that means producing something big with a group of diverse leaders and having fun while doing it. Peggy had served as the Training and Development Director for the California Democratic Party, developing and launching the first ever CADEM Training Extravaganza.
Her reach and success was wide, she was larger than life, filled with love & joy, and dedicated to serving her communities and her passing leaves a huge void.
The East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club was founded in 1982 to give voice to the East Bay LGBTQIA+ community. The Club was organized and established to:
• Further equality through the political process and community activism
• Bring together LGBTQIA+ individuals and our allies to achieve equality for all and advance progressive values through the Democratic Party
• Raise the issue of LGBTQIA+ rights in political campaigns
• Lobby for legislation that advances and upholds the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals
The Club is governed by active board of committed volunteers according to the bylaws of the organization and to working within the Democratic Party and within the community at large to influence the Democratic Party policy on LGBTQIA rights issues and to help educate the public about issues related to public policy and the positions of the Democratic Party.
Additionally, the party works to see that openly LGBTQQI people are elected to public office and appointed to city, county and state boards and commissions.
Inasmuch as the East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club works to advance the rights and visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community, they collaborate with other Clubs and the Party to see that we achieve our greater goals in advancing and securing democracy.
United for Sunol Glen is a dedicated group of parents and community members who lead successful grassroots recalls of two right-wing extremist school board members to repair, protect and heal Sunol Glen Unified School District. The community that organically came together as United for Sunol Glen will now carry on as guardians for the school, keeping a watchful eye to ensure that good governance, transparency and decision-making that serves the needs of each student above all else is the priority of the district governance team.
Karen Weinstein made the first film about the struggle for abortion rights in the U.S with her 3 feminist filmmakers; it was made before the Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973. The film serves as a powerful reminder of the conditions and demands that inspired the movement for abortion rights 50 years ago, and it recently won Best Creative Documentary Short Award at the Women's Voices Now Film Festival.
Karen has continued fighting for women's rights and she has been recognized for her work by Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner who named her Woman of the Year and many others including California Young Democrats, the Cal Berkeley Democrats, Berkeley City College, and Democratic Women which have acknowledged her leadership, public service, and inspiration to young women.
Karen trained with Emerge CA, and was subsequently elected Trustee to the Peralta Community College District. She was Chair of the California Democratic Party Women’s Caucus where she created the Women's Caucus Mentoring project, as well as Advisor to Close the Gap CA. She is Co-Chair of AAUW Berkeley which works for equity in education by providing scholarships and mentoring for young women.
She directed three videos: A New Generation of Democratic Women Leaders, Run for the County Central Committee and From Community College to Elected Office.
