2025 Annual Report

DEAR EAGLE'S NEST

FAMILIES & FRIENDS,

As I reflect back on the last year at Eagle’s Nest and The Outdoor Academy, I keep returning to the feeling of gratitude. Gratitude for the people who have welcomed me into their homes, shared their stories, and usually a meal. Gratitude for this land, which is now 13 acres stronger forever. Gratitude for the leadership and team of educators who continue to provide enriching programs for our young people. And, Gratitude for YOU, the friends and donors who keep the sparks of our mission burning bright year after year.

In 2025 we celebrated 30 years of The Outdoor Academy with an incredible reunion on campus. Along with countless connections and stories, it was an joyful day of togetherness in support of a milestone for any independent school. We launched the 2025 summer of Eagle’s Nest Camp with a new Camp Director, Ellen Fox, who brings the deep history of being a camper and counselor along with honed skills as a classroom teacher and restorative justice educator. In October, a small group of former students and campers helped us pilot a new weekend experience called Writer’s Nest, and we were reminded of the sense of place 43 Hart Road has on young people as well as their desire to return for shared experiences. We capped off the end of “cabin season” with Fall Fest at the Nest, a way to celebrate longtime supporters and welcome newcomers. It’s hard to imagine a better way to be introduced to the Eagle’s Nest community than by joining hands with three generations of Nesters in the dining hall and singing alongside the entirety of our leadership community.

As we bridge between the last 100 years and the next, we notice some patterns. We have consistently relied on research and best practices to inform the development of our programs. Asking what is best for young people, not what is

easiest, has been our trailblaze. Being grounded in mission centers us in a way that can evolve to meet the needs of challenging times.

We see financial patterns, too. Expenses are up between 8-15% for many of our big, fixed expenses. Requests for Camperships in 2026 have increased by 46%. Even with the strongest enrollment in recent years, we cannot increase our capacity or tuition in ways that cover these increases. These same circumstances are, of course, mirrored in the checkbooks of the families we work with. This is why the $456,666 raised through donations in 2025 are more important than ever!

Donors remove barriers for young people to access our programs. Your generosity opens the door for students from a wide range of backgrounds to learn, grow, and belong in this community. Because of you, financial limitations do not stand in the way of transformative outdoor experiences, meaningful relationships, and lifelong learning. The impact of your support is felt not only in each season, but in the confidence, curiosity, and stewardship these young people carry forward into the world.

You create access with your support. And we couldn’t be more grateful!

Hope to see you soon,

$10,000-$50,000

$1,000-$9,999

$100-$999

HOWDY FRIENDS,

Conversations during our Board's strategic planning retreat last month were generative, challenging, and affirming. One of my favorite phrases that emerged from a current Trustee — and former camper — was that our programming is an "antidote for what seems to be happening in today's world." I couldn't agree more. This work often feels like a prayer during the off-season: "May there be joy, may there be kindness, may there be good surprises, may there be friendship, may there be space for conflict to be worked through, may there be repair. May there be Cho Chos. Amen."

Some days, it feels like the best thing I can do to stay hopeful and grounded is simply to do this job — and I feel profoundly grateful for that. As a team, we plan and plan, and then summer arrives (literally hot), and we watch our prayers, like little seeds, take root and bloom. Session after session, summer after summer, it happens. One might call it a miracle — except that a miracle implies chance, a lucky strike. When something is designed with such deep intention and connects so consistently with so many people, perhaps "miracle" undersells it. It is, instead, the fruit of purposeful work.

The strength of our programming lives as much in the structures and the quiet as it does in the activities kids experience. It's in the size of our camp, the rustic character of our campus, the not-so-thrilling community chores, the embedded leadership that comes from mixing ages, and the empathy cultivated among such a diverse population of campers and staff. Is it peaceful and utopian every day? Heck no — and we wouldn't want it to be. That's Disney

World, not Camp World. Instead, we offer a place where campers can be uncomfortable without being in danger, take healthy risks without condoning harm, and co-create spaces of belonging — even while navigating homesickness. Camp thrives as a paradox: a place that holds space for both the complex and the simple.

After finishing this letter, I'll jump back into designing a module for our staff Orientation that invites counselors — some new, many returning alumni — to explore the concept of belonging together. We'll do it the Experiential way (as is our way), and it might involve making art out of trash. Belonging is such a complex-yet-simple concept. Speaking about it too directly can feel overwhelming, but a bottle cap, a pipe cleaner, and a little glue can open doors that words sometimes can't — embodied, tangential ways for these college-aged counselors to connect. The internet has both fostered and disrupted their sense of belonging in ways that camp actively works to counter. And because counselors are responsible for other people's children — kids they often grow deeply attached to — their behaviors and decisions must reflect a higher level of integrity, innovation, and intention. There is no better way to develop those qualities.

So thank you — not for donating to science, exactly, but in a very real sense, for contributing to the antidote to modern childhood that is Eagle's Nest Camp. Maybe one day camp will be prescribed for more people, but for now, we'll keep this remedy homemade. It's friends like you who keep us cooking.

Thanks for your support in 2025 and years to come,

• 1 1/2 cups butter

• 4 cups dark brown sugar

• 4 large eggs

• 1 tbsp. vanilla

• 4 cups flour

• 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

• 1 tsp. salt

• 12 ounces dark chocolate chips

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 and prepare a half sheet pan (cookie sheet) with parchment paper and buttered sides. With a mixer, combine butter and sugar until fluffy. In a separate bowl, combine dry ingredients and set aside. Add eggs one at a time to butter and sugar, beating for 1 minute after each. Add vanilla after all eggs are fully integrated. Add dry ingredients in three batches. Do not overmix, there should still be some dry bits. Fold in chocolate chips until just combined. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan and bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick or fork comes out clean. Cool completely and cut into squares.

HI OA COMMUNITY,

There is so much to celebrate about 2025 and The Outdoor Academy’s 30th Reunion: the Craft Auction, the storytelling project, the speaker series, the singing, the smiles, the circles, oh my! I’m most grateful for the opportunity to contextualize my recent experience of OA in the long history of the program and the broader Eagle’s Nest Foundation. While OA’s connections are clearly deepest among semester mates, gathering OA alums and staff from across the years – people of all ages and backgrounds –really demonstrated the collective impact of our program in the world.

In our “OA 30 for 30 Speaker Series” last April, noted author and environmentalist Bill McKibben reminded us, “one of the most important things an individual can do is be a little less of an individual and join together with others in movements large enough to make change.” For thirty years, we’ve attracted curious, thoughtful students, eager to learn together, close to the land, and to explore what it really means to show up for your community. Students come to OA looking for that authentic community connection and they go on to create community wherever they are; we’ve built a movement. I like to imagine all the change made by OA alums in their circles beyond our campus.

One image from the Reunion that sticks with me is the final circle up on the Athletic Field on April 26th, where representatives from Semester 1 to Semester 60 (and so

many other friends of Eagle’s Nest) gathered with candles softly lighting our faces to sing our Goodnight Song. It must have been one of OA’s largest circles, and you could feel that those gathered were also holding the light of the OA family who couldn’t join us in person. As we finished singing May the Peace of this Valley – a song written specifically for OA – most of us extinguished our flames to say goodnight. But a small segment of our massive circle remained dimly lit, and took another moment to quietly sing “their” goodnight song from many years ago, the same goodnight song sung at Eagle’s Nest Camp for the past many decades - Taps.

It was a sweet, lingering moment at the end of a full, vibrant day; just a little more circle, just one more song. And it was a reminder that, while some things remain core and common to The Outdoor Academy experience, there are different eras to the program and each has its own flavor, its own tone. I am grateful to be a small part of this long history, and to be surrounded by folks who believe deeply in the mission of Eagle’s Nest Foundation and the impacts we can have on young people in need of deep connection and opportunities for growth. As it has for thirty years, OA will continue to adapt and evolve, each era expressing itself in unique ways. Even so, we remain motivated by our important purpose, rooted in core values, and guided by elements of ENF tradition that connect us all in one tremendous circle.

Thank you for being a part of the movement.

MAY THE PEACE OF THIS VALLEY

May the peace of this valley around us, the warmth of the fire within, the shelter of the stars above us, the strength of the rivers nearby. Guide us safely through this night, ‘til morning lights the sky.

CIRCLING UP SINCE 1995:

30 YEARS OF THE OUTDOOR ACADEMY

On a perfect spring day—April 26, 2025—more than 300 alumni, family members, friends, staff, and current students gathered at 43 Hart Road to celebrate 30 years of The Outdoor Academy.

The day began, as so many do in Pisgah Forest, with a welcome circle and blessing. From there, the community spread out across campus: joining Work Crews, relaxing on Cabin 7 Field, participating in children’s activities led by the incredible Eagle's Nest Camp A-Team, and sharing stories that spanned generations of OA experience. Throughout the day, guests enjoyed craft classes, a lively silent auction, and delicious shared meals, all culminating in a spirited Contra Dance and a candlelit Goodnight Circle.

The 30th reunion at Eagle’s Nest brought alumni together in a way that felt both nostalgic and energizing. Familiar spaces filled with laughter and conversation, hikes unfolded under the same mountain skies, and the sense of connection that defines OA was as strong as ever. Old friendships resumed effortlessly, new ones took root, and each person left reminded of the lasting impact of this remarkable community.

The event also raised meaningful support for OA’s future. The craft auction brought in $4,697, while ticket sales ($15,553) and donations ($9,800) combined for a total of $25,353.

Thank you to everyone who helped celebrate this milestone—whether you joined us on campus or sent your well wishes from afar. It was a joyful, memorable day, filled with the people, traditions, and spirit that make The Outdoor Academy so special. From time at the forge to shared meals, from handcrafted art to a closing circle, it’s a celebration we won’t soon forget.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: JACOB GOODLING l Camp,

Camp Staff

In what ways has your ENF experience influenced how you build or value community in your life today?

My years growing up at the Nest have taught me and given me confidence to find and appreciate a good community outside of Eagle’s Nest. Camp taught me how to make connections with strangers, spread kindness to others, and find common ground with people outside of my typical social circles. These days I am enjoying volunteering at a pottery studio, and working with a new cohort of students every season makes me think fondly of doing the same at camp

What inspires you to give back to Eagle’s Nest, and why is supporting this community important to you?

Eagle's Nest is a precious space that feels increasingly hard to come by. Not nearly enough people get the chance today to experience the level of unabashed joy and whimsy - and in proximity to nature - that a space like Eagle's Nest provides to people of all ages. It feels like a privilege to have grown up going to camp every Summer, making it all the more important to make sure that future generations can access what camp provides: a chance to disconnect from all the unnecessary noise and find your own passions.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: MARCUS BACH-ARMAS l Camp and OA Alum, Camp Parent

How have the relationships or sense of community you built at OA and Eagle’s Nest stayed with you since leaving?

OA taught me the interconnectedness of both nature and humanity. No actions (or inactions) occur in a vacuum, and I carry that perspective with me when making decisions in my daily life.

In what ways has your OA/ENF experience influenced how you build or value community in your life today?

Service has always been important to me, and OA and ENF reinforced that value. Whether you’re serving your community, your family, or the natural world, a generous spirit of service is always rewarded—with peace of mind and a sense of fulfillment.

SUSTAINERS OF ENF

The Sustainers of Eagle’s Nest Foundation are a special community of supporters who have chosen to include the Foundation in their estate plans through bequests, life insurance, retirement assets, and other legacy gifts. Inspired by experiences at Eagle’s Nest Camp, Hante, and The Outdoor Academy—whether their own or those of loved ones—these generous individuals are committed to ensuring that future generations can benefit from transformative, experiential education.
