2024 Annual Report

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Eagle’s Nest Families and Friends,

In 2024, we celebrated themes of Legacy and Gratitude. The heart of this celebration was in honor of Noni Waite-Kucera’s 25 years as Eagle’s Nest’s Executive Director coming to a close with her retirement at the end of September. We saw an outpouring of gratitude for the legacy left by Noni, and rightfully so! During Noni’s leadership, we celebrated the additions of The Traditional Arts Center (Cheoah and Wayah), the purchase of 125 additional acres now under conservation easement, and the construction of Mo’s Hillside which met added needs for office and residential spaces. No wonder her transition also included the introduction of the Noni’s Nest Egg Endowed Fund created to put us in the position to act should the opportunity to expand our property arise. This fund is already on its way to being well feathered with $31,028 in initial gifts.

Also at the end of September, we held our breath and watched as the rain fell and the rivers rose from Hurricane Helene. Your generosity also rose to meet this moment a few weeks later with over $14,000 raised during October’s Silent Auction. All of these funds have been slated for scholarships for Western North Carolina student and camper families.

Together with other restricted gifts and financial aid from the Foundation, $669,715 was awarded in 2024 to help meet the goal of creating access for all young people to attend our programs regardless of financial need.

The value of financial independence in a time of rising costs and fewer funding sources cannot be overstated. What your financial gifts really mean is that Eagle’s Nest, unlike so many educational nonprofits, does not have to rely on state and federal funding. Our “Nest” is where so many young people come to experience and understand the natural world in a way that inspires further understanding, engagement, and protection. It is also that safe harbor where each camper and student can fully be themselves and experience belonging in a community that celebrates diversity. To have so many Fire Keepers and other caretakers of 43 Hart Road means that we can be steadfast in turbulent times.

Thanks to your incredible generosity, our 2024 Annual Fund closed with $443,691 in gifts other than endowments. With the addition of another $14,602 in gifts to endowed funds, our grand total reached $458,293, a new milestone for the Eagle’s Nest Foundation. This is also thanks to an incredible team here at Eagle’s Nest, both behind the scenes and leading programs. Personally, 2024 will forever be the year I was privileged to join this community. I feel incredibly honored and lucky for this opportunity and for each of you.

With warmest regards and deep gratitude,

Our Board of Trustees are elected in February of each year and serve three-year terms.

There are so many ways that Eagle’s Nest supports the healthy growth of children. Time at camp builds self-reliance as kids venture away from home and practice making their own decisions, campers gain confidence when they succeed in the face of new challenges, like paddling down a river or making a new friend, and they grow as compassionate people as they meet and befriend other campers and counselors who come from a variety of backgrounds and ideologies. At Eagle’s Nest, our campers are also able to be carefree, a rare opportunity for kids these days.

When I think of camp, one of the quintessential memories I have is of standing by the campfire on Nature Hill: counselors with their guitars enthusiastically playing campfire songs while campers with various sized sticks discussed how to make the perfect s’more. Beyond the fire circle, young children chase fireflies or fence with their sticks as they await their turn to roast marshmallows, and others laugh as they log-roll down the hill and run back up to do it again. Simple joy abounds on these evenings. These

Letter from Paige Community Confidence

moments illustrate that camp is more than just a break from school—it’s a giant plunge into the magical world of childhood.

This kind of unstructured play—so central to our camp experience—allows children to create their own adventures and discover new wonders every day. There are no screens or schedules to distract them, just the freedom to be fully present in the moment, whether they’re laughing around a campfire, dipping their toes in a creek, or simply lying in the grass and gazing at the stars.

“The thing that I love most about ENC is the freedom for kids to be themselves in a loving environment. I love that they can just be silly kids and have fun and have a break from their fast paced life in the real world. I also love that they can learn to be more independent and to also be an active member of a community.” - Camp parent, 2024 Moments of spontaneity and joy are essential for a child’s development. Away from the daily pressures of school, social media, and structured activities, kids can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and experience a sense of freedom that is becoming increasingly rare. These moments help build creativity, foster independence, develop resilience and help

children feel more connected to themselves and others. When children run through fields, explore the woods, or stomp through the creek, they’re doing more than just playing—they’re growing.

At Eagle’s Nest, these experiences are not just encouraged, they’re essential. We provide the space and the opportunity for children to immerse themselves in nature, explore at their own pace, and discover their own sense of wonder. We couldn’t do all of these things without your support.

Because of you, campers can experience the simple, profound joys of summer: singing around a campfire, swimming in a mountain lake, or lying in the grass, watching the stars. Your support ensures that more children have the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature, discover their independence, and feel the deep sense of belonging that Eagle’s Nest fosters.

Thank you for believing in the power of camp. Thank you for helping us create a place where children can be carefree, where they can grow, and where the magic of summer is not just in the fireflies—but in the campers themselves, shining brightly.

Compassion Nature Joy

Paige Lester-Niles, Camp Advisor, and Ellen Fox, Camp Director

Irecently sat in on English class where students were discussing Edward Abbey’s “The First Morning” from Desert Solitaire. The narrator wakes up after his first night in the forest ranger’s trailer to greet the day, presumably the only human for miles around. He sought to subsume his human tendencies with a six-month stint in the wilderness, to become one with the desert landscape there. As he takes in his surroundings, he’s struck with a sense of possessiveness over the place, a desire to know it deeply – something akin to responsibility – not just because of his profession and position, but because of his experience with it at daybreak. He sought out some refuge and goes on to explore a deeper connection. Students in the class likened it to their Morning Watch.

Every morning on campus, our students start their day with Morning Watch, circling up at the Sun Lodge and hiking silently to the crest of the hill as the sun creeps over the horizon and fills the Little River Valley. They sit quietly, each in their own spot, though not far from one another, until the day’s leaders signal them and they return in silence to their circle at the Sun Lodge before heading off for chores, breakfast, and class. Morning Watch is a personal meditation, but undertaken collectively. It’s at once an individual and a group experience of place. It’s a

Keeping Watch LETTER FROM THE Intellect OA DIRECTOR

moment of earned respite and a bit of a refuge in the full life of this experiential boarding school environment.

Morning watch is also a prescribed discipline, a required premise. We’re not simply out there for a break. Rather, Morning Watch serves as a centering, a grounding, as we launch into the busyness of the day. In many ways it’s a precursor to and prepares us for the day ahead, tuning our minds and our bodies for the deep learning and community work that we engage in so rigorously. Morning watch is an invigorating exercise and piques our observation skills. It encourages a different kind of awareness of our surroundings and of each other. Over the course of the semester,

Jesse Pyles, The Outdoor Academy Director, his wife Laura, and their children

Morning Watch becomes foundational to our experience of The Outdoor Academy and builds a commitment to practice that many of our students carry forward with them in other ways.

I think of Eagle’s Nest’s supporters in a similar way – especially our regular annual fund contributors. Your commitment to this practice of giving tunes us up for the meaningful work of our programs. You each give as an individual act and for your own reasons, but in concert with others for the

collective impact on our ENF community. Your efforts – even when modest – contribute over time to a foundational and transformational experience for young people. As our daily Morning Watch connects us more deeply to this landscape and each other, I hope that your regular support deepens your connection to all of us at Eagle’s Nest. We couldn’t do this important work without you.

NONI'S NEST EGG

The ENF Board of Trustees and other donors raised over $39,000 to establish the “Noni’s Nest Egg” Fund in honor of Noni’s years of dedication. You can make your commitment in honor of Noni too, with a gift today and a pledge towards our sustainable future.

The purpose of the fund is to honor Noni by building an endowed fund that will financially support the campus and surrounding land she so carefully stewarded in her 25 years as Executive Director and her lifetime of commitment to the ENF mission. Going forward, annual withdrawals will support ongoing loan payments for land and buildings and assist with special conservation projects. Additionally, in the event the opportunity arises for ENF to purchase adjoining mission-appropriate land, housing, or other needed facilities, the corpus of the endowment may be used in part or full as a down payment or for outright purchase.

Planned gifts are gifts for... ever. Leave a lasting legacy by including ENF in your estate plans.

Gifts for today through Annual Giving assist with current operations and programming.

Gifts for tomorrow include special giving for new construction, special projects, new endowments, and future program enhancements.

Gifts for forever established through wills and trusts, bequests, and other planned giving vehicles create a lasting legacy at Eagle’s Nest Foundation.

The benefits of planned giving are numerous to both you and to future generations of campers, students, and adventurers at Eagle’s Nest and The Outdoor Academy.

SUSTAIN

Our Sustainers of ENF are those who have elected to include Eagle’s Nest Foundation in their estate plans through bequests, gifts of life insurance and retirement plans, and other contributions made through their estate

These honored friends have found inspiration at Eagle’s Nest Camp, Hante, and The Outdoor Academy, either personally or through their children or grandchildren.

Our Sustainers wish to leave a legacy that provides future generations of young people the opportunity for experientially based education, passion for the natural world, and growth in discovery of their best selves.

Many planned giving options allow donors and their loved ones to receive income during their lifetime from assets that will eventually benefit Eagle’s Nest. All of these life-income gifts deserve special consideration when making financial and estate plans.
