Welcome to the sale,

Markets have gone up and down since the beginning of time; not much we can do to change that. Genetic improvement, however, goes up every year. Some years faster than others. To me that is why we need to keep investing in the genetics that will keep our programs moving forward. Eagle Pass Ranch has added sever al top level donor females to our arsenal this fall and we did it in a “buyers market” witho ut a bit of remorse. We invite you to consider doing the same by selecting genetics from this offering that will move your programs forward as well.

When we decided to include a “W” dispersal in our sale we knew that would include the high revenue producing, former National Champion EGL Tessa W102. Look for her as Lot 11. We also are offering our never fail Angus donor, EGL Miss Frontier 4087. Her sons consistently top the Angus and SimAngus sections of our sales. This is truly a front end type of sale. Just go through the lots and you will find the numbers speak for themselves.

Visitors to the ranch marvel at how we can go out and walk amongst the cows in 640 acre pastures. The docility improvement in our cattle is likely paralleled only by our feed efficiency improvement. We can document that our cattle today are over 25% more feed efficient than they were when we started selecting for the trait in 2007.

Many females in the sale are documented to be “Verified Feed Efficient”. Meaning they either finished in the top half of their feed intake conte mporary group; or their parents did. There is no other source in the cattle industry for this level of feed efficient genetics. Our genetic consultant has formulated a Feed Effici ency Profitability Index ($FE) to help you sort through the offering. This index uses the 100,000+ records in the GrowSafe database. This will be a very powerful and highl y accurate tool.

UNDERSTANDING THE CATALOG EPDs Defined Calving Ease EPD (CE) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of an animal’s ability to transmit birth weight to their progeny compared to that of other animals. Birth Weight EPDs are a component trait for calculating Calving Ease EPDs. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of an animal’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires and dams.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of an animal’s ability to transmit yearling growth to their progeny compared to that of other sires and dams.

Milk EPD (Milk), expressed in pounds, is an estimate of the portion of a calf ’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Optimal Milk EPDs can vary between environments. AMERICAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION $VALUE INDEXES $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
