Thank you for joining us...
for the Eagle Pass Ranch Bull Sale. We truly appreciate you taking the time to be here, whether you’re a longtime customer, a neighbor, or visiting us for the first time.
Eagle Pass Ranch has been a family operation since 1987, and everything we do centers on producing cattle that work in real-world ranch conditions. The bulls offered today are age-advantaged, ranch-developed, and raised the way we expect them to work for our own program—on forage, with minimal inputs, and under the same environmental pressures they’ll face when they go to work for our customers.
These bulls have been developed to hold condition, stay sound, and remain useful for years—not just look good on sale day.
Our goal has always been simple. We want to produce dependable genetics you can trust, stand behind the cattle we sell, and build long-term relationships with the people who buy them.
We invite you to study the offering, ask questions, and handle the bulls. If there’s anything you’d like to know about an individual bull, a sire group, or how these cattle were developed, we’re happy to visit with you.
On behalf of our family, thank you again for your interest and support of Eagle Pass Ranch. We look forward to visiting with you and earning your business.
AJ Munger for The Munger Family, Eagle Pass Ranch

Calving Ease EPD (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a bull’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other bulls. Birth Weight EPDs are a component trait for calculating Calving Ease EPDs.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a bull’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a bull’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Stayability(Stay), expressed as a percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.
Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area (REA), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
SCOTT AND PAULA HAMILTON HAMILTON FARMS – HITCHCOCK, SD
“We grid market close to 800 home-raised steers every year. For the last 3 years, those steers averaged 17% Prime and 49% CAB with a 925# carcass weight and 70% YG 3 or better. We can get that kind of grade without sacrificing carcass weight or too many YG 4s and 5s because of the bulls we buy and managing cattle to their optimal end point.”
Profitable Genetic Selection using API and TI
There’s a lot riding on bull selection, as it not only affects the value of your calf crop that you will market for the next 4-6 years, but if you’re keeping replacements that can turn in to as much as 10-15 years!
So how do you make the most profitable decisions today, based on what the industry will be like in 5, 10, or 15 years?
Economic indexes are easily the most efficient and effective way to select for future profitability. They are the ONLY genetic selection method that allows you to factor in the cost of selecting for traits, as well as the benefit.
For example, what’s another 25 lbs of Weaning Weight worth? Well, that’s pretty easy as there’s plenty of market information to determine the benefit of added payweight. But that 25 lbs of Weaning Weight isn’t free, unfortunately. It’s more than likely going to require more feed intake or milk production, but maybe it’s also related to more birth weight and potential calving problems. Or maybe it’s related to more mature cow size with higher maintenance costs because she still needs groceries year-round, whether she’s raising a calf or not. In a nutshell, that’s what indexes do. They take all of the economically-relevant traits (ERTs) and calculate their value based on all the costs and benefits associated with those traits.
So, which indexes should you use? Luckily, that answer is pretty simple. If you’re keeping replacement females, the All-Purpose Index (API) is the best choice. However, if you market 100% of your calf crop every year, the Terminal Index (TI) puts absolutely no weight on any maternal traits and it will allow you to maximize the market value of your calf crop at every end point, whether that’s as a weaned calf, yearling, or selling fat cattle on a value-based marketing grid.
Lastly, it’s important to have a reference for how these indexes are tabulated. Indexes are displayed in dollars per cow exposed.
So, if a bull breeds 30 cows a year
For an average of 4 years that’s 120 total cows exposed
A percentile ranking is provided to show how a bull compares to other bulls in the breed.
If Bull A is +100 for API and Bull B is +150 for API, over their lifetime, Bull B will generate $6,000 (120 cows exposed x $50 difference in API) more Net Profit than Bull A.
FARLEE RANCH DUPREE, SD
“We want our cows to work for us, not the other way around. We’ve been buying Eagle Pass bulls for over 20 years, starting with my Dad, and now I’m buying bulls with my two boys and my son-in-law. We’re weaning more pounds per cow today than we ever have before. Cows calve early in the season, stay in the herd longer, and raise a big calf that sells at the top of the market every year. That’s what it takes to keep this ranch going for the next generation of upcoming ranchers.”
A bull and his breeding value can’t be explained by using only EPDs, but there’s even more information about a bull’s breeding potential that can’t be identified solely by appearance. To help you make the best selection for your herd, we’ve developed a straightforward 5-star scoring system to complement a bull’s genomics and EPD profile. Each bull is evaluated in five key areas, with scores ranging from 1 to 5 stars. The more stars, the better the score. Here’s what each category represents:
1. Docility (DOC) Using Beef Improvement Federation methodology, we assess each bull’s disposition by handling them individually in an alley. Bulls with higher scores exhibit calmer, more manageable temperaments, making them easier to handle and safer to work with.
2. Phenotype (TYPE) This is a subjective evaluation of the bull’s overall structural correctness and eye appeal. A higher score indicates superior visual traits, including soundness, balance, and an appealing physical appearance.
3. Feet Evaluated using the Beef Improvement Federation’s foot and leg scoring methodology, this category assesses the bull’s hoof angle and claw set. A higher score means better hoof structure, contributing to longevity and fewer lameness issues.
4. Maternal (MTNL) This score reflects the maternal traits of the bull, including the age and productivity of his dam, the dam’s udder quality, the percentage of her body weight weaned, and the bull’s genomically-enhanced Stayability EPD. Higher scores indicate a strong potential for long-lasting, productive females in your herd.
5. Calving Ease Our 5-star calving ease system is designed to help match bulls appropriately across cow groups.
HHHHH Suitable for use on heifers.
HHHH May be used on heifers, but best evaluated on young cows first.
HHH Suitable for use on all cows.
HH Recommended for mature cows only.
H Terminal sire—intended for mature cows with no replacement daughters retained.

Our XXL composite bulls are a powerful blend of Simmental, Gelbvieh, and Angus genetics, designed to bring out the best traits of each breed. This unique combination provides ranchers with:
Heterosis (Hybrid Vigor): XXL bulls, a combination of 3 breeds, provide more hybrid vigor (67% retained heterosis) compared to crossbreds (50% retained heterosis). This results in superior performance traits such as improved fertility, growth, and survivability. Hybrid vigor also enhances the longevity and productivity of offspring.
Maternal Excellence: Gelbvieh and Angus genetics contribute to high-quality, productive females with excellent maternal instincts
• Growth and Muscle: Simmental genetics add frame, muscle, and gainability, ensuring calves reach their optimum potential at sale time.
By incorporating XXL composite bulls into your breeding program, you get the benefits of multiple breeds in one package, optimizing both your cow herd and calf crop for profitability and long-term success. XXL bulls are the smart choice for ranchers who value versatility, efficiency, and genetic improvement.

Chad Forman wasn’t just a long-time cowboy at Eagle Pass Ranch — he was a close friend of the family and a big part of everyday life around here. He was the kind of guy you wanted in the pens with you and the kind of guy you wanted around when the work was done.
Chad was always smiling, always ready with a story, and usually the one keeping things light when the day got long. He had a way of making work feel less like work, and his laugh could be heard across the ranch.
He took a lot of pride in making sure the bulls looked right on sale day. Chad was the one who got the sale bulls ready every year, torching and clipping thousands over the years, paying attention to the details and making sure they were presented the way they should be. That care showed, year after year.
This year, it meant a lot to all of us to have his son, Blade, carrying that tradition forward and torching bulls just like his dad did. Seeing Blade step in was a reminder that Chad’s influence is still very much a part of this place.
We miss Chad every time we work cattle, but his presence, his humor, and his friendship live on here — in the stories, in the work, and in the people who learned from him.
