‘Family truckster’ redefined Earlier this year I was forced to say goodbye to an old friend and introduce a new one to our family. After sustaining some damage from tangling with a deer a mere few hundred yards from my home, I elected to retire my mini van, and it was not without sadness that I parted ways with the navy blue steed with the Mickey Mouse-eared family of stick figures on the back window. This was not just a ton of metal that had more than 130,000 miles on the odometer. The Town & Country had brought my kids to and from practice, taken a trip to Florida, made many suitcase-laden trips to the north country and grocery-jammed trips home from Wegmans. The DVD player had born witness Jennifer to my children growing up from toddlers to middle school, with the lineup changing from movies

Jack McNerney Chevrolet expands New service center is state-of-the-art

Submitted photo

The new service center has a four-car service drive lane, state-of-the-art equipment and a new customer lounge with Wi-Fi. By Cheryl Seligman Jack McNerney Chevrolet, a family-owned and operated dealership, is expanding after 43 years in business. The sales facility, located at 363 Route 281 in Tully, is now home to a new 15,000-square-foot addition. The Jack McNerney team has been planning to move the service center from its current location off of Route 11 to the sales facility on Route 281 for several years, said Mike McNerney, the Jack McNerney Chevrolet dealer, and thought “now was the time to do it.” The service center opened in April, with a four-car service drive lane, state-of-the-art equipment and a new customer lounge with Wi-Fi, McNerney said.

The service center at Jack McNerney Chevrolet will also feature a new quick check for alignment and a quick lube rack, “so we’ll be able to get people in and out with oil changes quickly,” McNerney said. “Our customers’ response has been almost overwhelmingly positive,” he said. “They love the new waiting area and the new equipment that gets them in and out so much more quickly, along with our ability to repair their vehicle more accurately.” The service center hours of operation will also be expanded to include Saturdays. McNerney also mentioned that Chevrolet is coming out with 13 new models in 2013, and that the Jack McNerney team an-

ticipates Chevrolet will continue to grow in the Syracuse area. The dealership is centrally located and easily accessible, the inventory is always kept at its peak, and all new cars have competitive miles-per-gallon ratings compared to other cars manufactured in their class. Since 1970, the Jack McNerney team has offered high-quality service and affordable prices, and will continue that pattern and commitment to customer service with the new expansion, which should be complete within the next month and a half. “We’re really excited about it,” McNerney said. “We’re getting bigger to better serve our customers. It’s going to be great.”

easy for them to do that through our newspaper websites or directly at cars315. com,” said Eagle Publisher David Tyler. “We’ve also had a great relationship over the years with dozens of area dealerships. Cars315 will allow them to package their print and digital advertising in a way that is streamlined and much less expensive than the national sites, which offer only digital exposure and no means of connecting with customers through print.” The cars315 concept was developed by Joe Mathes, who publishes a 5,000 circulation weekly newspaper as well as a shopper in Kiel, Wis. Mathes recognized that national car sites were taking a huge chunk of the car advertising revenue from local media companies. Not only was the revenue leaving the market, but the national sites had what amounted to a monopoly on local internet automotive advertising. In response, Mathes developed partnerships with several other newspapers in rural Wisconsin and launched cars920.com, which provided all the bells and whistles of the national sites, but at a fraction of the price. Through his newspapers and those of his publishing partners, he also was able to package the digital search component with compelling print advertising to add local exposure for the dealers that the national companies couldn’t provide. The result was a product that helped dozens of local dealers connect with local customers. Since the beginning of 2012, when cars920.com was launched, Mathes has worked with newspapers in 15 zip codes around the country to launch similar platforms. “I met Joe earlier this year at a conference in Saratoga, and he was already working with publishers in Vermont and Northern New York to bring local auto search sites into those locations,” Tyler said. “It seemed like a natural fit to bring this to the Syracuse area and to use the power of our print audience to get it off the ground.” Tyler indicated that he is actively recruiting other publishers to join the platform and bring Cars315 to portions of the area code that aren’t covered by Eagle publications. In addition, efforts are underway to bring Cars518.com (The Capital District and Adirondacks), Cars585.com (Rochester and the Finger Lakes), Cars607.com (Southern Tier) and Cars716.com (Buffalo and Western NY) on board. As these areas come on line, vehicles from each of them will be available through Cars315. “Cars315 is great for car buyers, it’s great for auto dealers, and it’s great for local newspapers,” Tyler said. “Small media companies like ours need to continue to seek out innovative ways to bring local consumers together with local sellers. Efforts like this will help strengthen our local news product both in print and online.”

Greg Hudson named honorary pit crew member at NASCAR race NAPA Auto Parts recognized Greg Hudson as its recipient of the Honorary Pit Crew Member (HPCM) program at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Watkins Glen International last summer. Greg Hudson and his wife, Cathy, are the third generation owners of Hudson & Mowins Auto Repair, which opened for business in 1946. “My grandfather started the business shortly after WWII with a one-bay garage,” Hudson said. “He outgrew it fairly quickly. By 1950, it was a three-bay operation. Eight years later, Atlantic Richfield built him a complete station. We actually had an auto parts store in the brand new facility. That store would eventually become NAPA Auto Parts, so we’ve been with NAPA since 1955. We would be lost without NAPA.” Hudson is a graduate of SUNY Morrisville where he earned an associate’s degree in automotive technology. Hudson & Mowins is one of the original NAPA AutoCare Centers out of NAPA Syracuse and is serviced by the NAPA store in Baldwinsville. The Hudsons bought the business from Greg’s father and uncle in 2002. This year marks their 11th anniversary. “NAPA is right with us every step of the way,” Hudson said. “It includes the parts they sell to us and the nationwide warranties. I also appreciate all the business software and advertising they supply to us.” Hudson became an official member of the NAPA KNOW HOW crew at the NAPA hospitality event organized by the NAPA Syracuse distribution center. It was there that he was presented with an official crew shirt from NAPA driver Martin Truex Jr. The highlight of the festivities was when Hudson learned that his name would be on the No. 56 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota for the 90-lap road course event.

LEFT: Hudson’s name was on the car for the event. ABOVE: Greg and Kathy Hudson toured the NASCAR Sprint Cup garage and pits recently at Watkins Glen International. After hospitality, he and his wife Cathy toured the NASCAR Sprint Cup garage area where they explored the garage and pits before eating lunch with the entire Michael Waltrip Racing team. The Hudsons also spent time with car owner Michael Waltrip and Truex before heading off to watch pre-race festivities which included a photo opportunity with both Waltrip and Truex by the No. 56 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota. “I’ve never considered myself a race fan,” Hudson said. “However, this is awesome. I never expected to see my name on Martin’s race car. It was so cool. I took a picture of it and sent it to everyone I knew. I am a race fan now. I am easily swooned, I guess.” In 2012 NAPA hosted its popular Honorary Pit Crew Program at all of the NASCAR Sprint Cup races. The HPCMs are chosen based on different criteria determined by the NAPA management from the region that hosts the race.

The all new 2013 Dodge Dart is getting great reviews and their are more improvements to the Dodge line coming.” Valerino said that sales were also good in 2012. “Dodge Caravan was a good seller for us as well as Ram trucks. Big changes at Par-K Chrysler-Jeep

Remodeling plus improvements to Jeep and Chrysler lineups Chrysler Group LLC continues to improve models and Par-K Chrysler-Jeep continues to make improvements to their dealership. “Big changes are on the way this year,” said Tom Gilbo, general manager at Par-K. “In early March, 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be here. They redesigned it with an eight-speed transmission standard and a V-6 or V-8 Hemi engine. A diesel engine will be available in the Grand Cherokee, resulting in 30 miles per gallon highway. In August, the all-new, totally redesigned 2014 Jeep Cherokee will arrive with a ninespeed transmission standard. Come in and order your brand new Jeep Cherokee the way you want it … and it will be here in six to eight weeks! The new 2014 Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass are already on their way with new six-speed transmissions resulting in 30 miles per gallon highway. The emphasis by Jeep was on better gas mileage and that’s why they decided to change many of their models.” Not to be outdone — look what’s new with the Chrysler line. “The 2013 Chrysler 300s deliver 30 miles per gallon highway with the new eight-speed transmission,” said Gilbo. “Later this fall, Chrysler will introduce a brand new Chrysler 200 and Chrysler 100.

Par-K, much like the cars it sells, underwent improvements recently. After an ice storm collapsed the roof on its body shop, Gilbo said the garage was rebuilt from the floor up. “It’s beautiful; everything is brand new and top of the line in the shop,” he added. “Bill Marshall and Butch Jackowski do an incredible job managing the shop. They do custom work and have multiple cars featured in magazines, and, of course, are there for all the dents and dings and insurance work you may need.” More changes this year will include new siding and new windows to the dealership. “We are redoing the outside and the inside,” said Gilbo. “It will be more customerfriendly — more presentable. We want our customers to be comfortable— have some coffee or tea, watch television or use our Wi-Fi while in for service. It’s all about the customer.” Par-K also added Saturday maintenance hours. Cars are serviced from 8 a.m. to noon, in addition to the normal 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours Monday through Wednesday and Friday. On Thursday, the service department is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. “The Saturday hours are great for people who can’t get off work during the weekdays,

Par-K General Manager Tom Gilbo says you can see their entire inventory at par-k.com. or have something they need to take care of in a pinch,” Gilbo said. “We do a lot of maintenance and brake jobs on Saturdays so you can have your car back on the road for work on Monday.” Gilbo urged those in the market for a new Chrysler or jeep to visit Par-K. To view and test drive any of the

the repair process and customers are pleased with the process since the insurance company and Northside Collision are working together to provide a guaranteed repair and a favorable experience rather than an adversarial one, says Bell. Northside locations are I-Car Gold Class Certified, which means the company’s technicians have undergone extensive training and certifications in all phases of collision repair. Each facility uses the latest technology available for diagnostics and collision repair. They converted to water based, green, environmentally friendly paints from BASF in 2011, Bell said. Jones, who has been with the company for 26 years, said Northside has become the premier collision repair facility in Upstate New York. “If you take care of customers they keep coming back,” he said. Northside is now repairing vehicles for three generations in some families. Many customers that had their vehicles repaired in the 1970s when the company was started are still returning, as well as their children and grandchildren, for vehicle repairs. Northside Collision offers loaner vehicles, and rentals on site. You can find a Northside Collision location near you at northsidecollision.com.

such as “Cars” to the likes of “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.” The walls had reverberated with the strains of kids’ songs from Laurie Berkner and the Wiggles in the early years, morphing into top 40 tunes accompanied by the laughter of the kids riding with their friends to the mall, the beach and the movies as they grew older. My husband had been opposed to purchasing the van in the first place, but even he had to admit it was a wise choice. It was safe, roomy and reliable – everything a young family needs on the road. So, when it came time to replace the ol’ girl, you’d think I would turn to the tried-

and-true model, the vehicle that had fit so well with our needs. It would certainly make sense to go with what had worked for us thus far. But I decided instead that it was time for a change. The kids are older, our needs are changing and, frankly, I’m done with being a “mini van mom.” I still need the benefit of having additional seating, as we typically are not alone in our family unit of four when on the road. The kids invariably have a friend – or two or three or four – with them, which makes it difficult if you need to be safe and have the kids all buckle up. With this in mind, I hit the internet, and

quickly found what I wanted – an SUV with a third row. There are many models to choose from, with options galore. I found the web to be a great tool for narrowing down the field to a few choices. I then visited local dealerships who had the vehicles on the lot, did some test drives and made my decision – a black Honda Pilot with seating for eight and enough cargo room that I could still pack up for a weekend trip to wherever. As I drove off the lot in my new car, however, I still couldn’t help looking in the rearview mirror at my old, rusted, true-blue mini van, now just another trade-in which would most likely be divided up for parts.

She had a good run, saw a lot of laughter, a few tears and even a couple of tantrums. She logged plenty of miles for us in our lives, and carried us through my children’s important, formative years. Then, as I turned my eyes to the road ahead, I realized that, in the next decade, we will become a family of four drivers. As much as it scares me to think of my children taking the wheel themselves, I hope they will think fondly of their lives as passengers and remember that first “ride” of theirs – one that took us safely where we needed to go, and almost seemed to be an extension of our home, or a member of our family.

The event will feature a car build-off involving three men with a $4,500 budget each who have dozens of years of auto-building experience among them. The three builders will unveil their creations on Friday, July 19, at 10 a.m. in the Beef Barn located near Gate 10. The winner will be decided by popular voting by participants at the Nationals and will be announced on Sunday, July 21. Million Dollar Garage—Winfield Award Nominees One car owner at the 2013 Syracuse Nationals will receive the Fourth Annual Winfield Award. The prestigious award for automotive excellence will be presented by master car customizer and builder Gene Winfield. The winner will receive a custom trophy, jacket and $10,000. The five runners-up will each receive a custom trophy, jacket and $1,000 each. Artie’s Party featuring pinstripers’ panel jam Inside the Horticulture Building, pinstripe and airbrush artists at the pinstripers’ panel jam, known as “Artie’s Party,” work almost around the clock during the Syracuse Nationals to hand- paint original automotive artwork on items of all kinds, from vehicle panels to skateboards to mailboxes. The one-of-a-kind items are then auctioned throughout the weekend, with this year’s proceeds benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York. The nonprofit organization serves as a “home away from home” for families whose children are hospitalized with serious illnesses or injuries. Last year “Artie’s Party” raised more than $77,000 for the charity. “We’re proud that Syracuse Nationals is not only known as a car show but as an event that supports local organizations,” said Bob O’Connor, Syracuse Nationals founder and director. “We’re so fortunate to be able to give back to the community each year, and through the hard work and help of thousands of Nationals participants, car club volunteers, exhibitors and sponsors, we’ve been able to ensure that we’ll make a difference for an organization in our area.”

A few auction items and information about Artie’s Party and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York are on display in The Canyon area at Destiny USA through July 18. For the past 14 years, hundreds of volunteers from the Central New York Car Club Association (CNYCCA) have worked to make the Syracuse Nationals run smoothly and to ensure everyone who attends the show is informed, safe and comfortable. The association also designates many of the charitable organizations and causes that receive donations from the event proceeds. Longley Dodge, your Business Link Dealer Oswego County’s only Business Link Dealer By Jennifer Wing Longley Dodge in Fulton recently added to its already extensive inventory of quality vehicles a new commercial line of trucks. “We are now a Business Link Dealer,” said Dennis Longley, president of Longley Dodge. “We offer the full Ram truck line, from the Ram 1500, Motor Trend Magazine’s 2013 Truck of The Year, to the 3500-5500 series trucks that are available with dump bodies, stake racks and rollback wrecker units.” Longley said the move allows the dealership to further its ties with Chrysler and Dodge, “handling the full line of what they provide.” “We are trying to build the business to take care of local contractors and extend to them the excellent service for which we’re known,” he said, adding that the dealership has ordered a new 30,000-pound hoist to handle the heavy duty trucks. Good service after the sale has been the cornerstone for success at Longley Dodge. Being open 65 years has established a reputation for Longley Dodge of customer satisfaction and quality service, the qualities which earned the dealership such a good reputation. But, even so, the dealership is always looking for ways to make their service after the sale even better. “We have added VIN Solutions, a program to better take care of our customers and follow up with their needs,” Longley said. “Our customers are our number one priority.” And the service at Longley Dodge in Fulton

is what keeps customers coming back — some have come back 30 times. “We had one family that bought over 30 vehicles from us, starting with a 1960 Studebaker,” Longley said. Besides the generations of car buyers are the three generations of staff at Longley Dodge. Earl and Harold Longley began the business in 1947 strictly as an auto body shop. The family dealership was established in 1955 and the brothers added the Dodge line in 1964, making Longley the longest standing Dodge dealership in Oswego County. Earl’s son Dennis and Harold’s son Gene run the business now, while their sons also work at the dealership. “We’re a family organization,” said Longley. “I think that has a lot to do with it, especially sine we’re in a small community. People like to come here and know they’re going to get good service.” And that service isn’t overbearing, Longley said. “Our sales staff doesn’t pressure you,” he said. “They’re not pushy. We don’t like to operate that way, because it doesn’t really serve the customer as well.” That’s why people keep coming back. “A lot of our business is repeat business,” Longley said. “People come back to us.” And if there is a problem, people know they can go to the top to find a solution. “The buck stops at my desk,” Longley said. Dennis learned the business from the ground up. After graduating from Northward University’s Automotive Business School he worked in the body shop for 10 years. He joined the sales team in the late 1970s and

From left are Gene, Dennis and Doug Longley. served as sales manager from 1980 to 2000. He raced for 10 years and in 1989 won the ESTA Mod Championship at ESTA Drag Strip in his 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury. He has rode Harley-Davidson motorcycles for years. Dennis’ son Doug is now the sales manager, a position he has held for more than seven years. Jack Montague is the used car manager. “He buys, sells and appraises used cars for us,” said Dennis. “You have to know used cars and trends and Jack stays on top of it for us.” Dodge’s new and improved 2013’s have been well received. “The new 2013 Dodge Dart is getting rave reviews — people really like it,” said Dennis. “Produced from 1960 to 1976, the Dodge Dart is back with three different engines and 160 horsepower. We have one in stock — and have already taken many orders. They’re built with 68 percent high-strength steel, 10 air bags

standard, and it’s the only car in its class that offers blind spot monitoring and rear cross path detection.” The Dodge Ram 1500 has had some major mechanical updates for 2013 including a more powerful engine and improved air suspension plus voice control and upgraded electronics. Its improved fuel economy is “Best in Class.” Longley Dodge, which has been on the web for more than 10 years, continues to grow. It is one of only a few dealers that have pictures and pricing online, with up to 25-plus pictures of each vehicle. The dealership is on Facebook and Twitter, just launched its mobile website for smart devices and has one of the fastest response times of any dealership. Due to customer demand, the service department is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Longley Dodge is located at 1698 Route 57, just south of Fulton. They can be reached at 598-2135 or at longleydodge.com.

Strap pets in for safety … theirs and yours Most drivers would not allow a 40-pound unsecured weight to ricochet around the interior of their vehicles. Passengers and cargo are typically strapped in for safety. But if a driver is driving with an unsecured pet in his or her car, he or she could be putting everyone in the car at risk. The law states that children and adults should be buckled up when riding in a car. The same regulations do not always pertain to pet passengers, although some experts think they should. According to Christina Selter, the founder of California-based pet advocacy group Bark Buckle Up, pets can be very dangerous inside of a vehicle if they are not secured. A 60-pound Golden Retriever can hit you with 2,700 pounds of force in a 35 mile-perhour crash. However, that’s not the only danger. A dog or cat that is allowed to roam freely It is best to secure your feline friend if you will be taking inside a car can pose a distraction to the driver, him for a ride in the car. potentially impeding a driver’s line of vision or inadvertently bumping into the gear shift. A small animal could get down into the foot well on the driver’s side and impede operation of the brakes or accelerator. In addition to the passengers and driver in the car, an unsecured pet poses a danger to itself. A dog or cat that is propelled through the car in a crash or sudden stop can risk injury or death. Even simply bumping noses on the dashboard or a seat can be very painful to the animal. There are other reasons why the pet should be tethered in the car. 3 A belt or tether secures the animal and prevents it from hanging its head out of the window, where any small speck of flying debris can cause a serious injury to the pet’s eyes or nose. It’s important to keep the pet’s entire body inside of the moving vehicle. 3 A harness will prevent a dog or cat from physically jumping out of the vehicle. If a squirrel or other distraction arouses interest outside, the pet is unable to pursue it. 3 In the event of an accident, a pet seatbelt will keep the animal contained until emergency workers can assess the situation. A frightened or injured pet may scratch or bite. Having an excited animal on the loose can make rescue dangerous. 3 When wearing a harness, the pet doesn’t have to work as hard bracing itself while See Pets, page 11

the car is maneuvering. The harness will keep it secure. There are many ways to secure pets in a motor vehicle. An animal crate that is belted down is one option, and a pet may be comfortable riding in a familiar crate and feel more secure as a result. For smaller dogs or cats, consider a pet booster seat that straps in with the vehicle’s safety belt. Some drivers have used children’s booster seats with a pet harness. Harnesses that work with safety belts are also available. These can keep the pet in a sitting or lyingdown position. Securing pets in the car ensures the driver’s safety and the safety of the passengers as well as the health of the pet going for a ride.
