Music with a

twist ‘CirqOvation’ to be presented by Symphoria on Saturday

S

ymphoria is continuing its Spark concert series, which takes performances out of the traditional music hall, with “CirqOvation� at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20., at the New York State Fairgrounds Exhibition Center (Dairy Cattle Building.)

Symphoria will be joined by CirqOvation, a LaFayette-based group of aerial artists, jugglers, acrobats, comedians and other performers who fuse physical theatre, vaudeville, street performance and traditional circus.

The family-friendly program includes music from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,� “Entrance from the Gladiators March,� “Waltz� from Sleeping Beauty and more.

There will also be a free “Arts for All� event from 1-6 p.m. in the Exhibition Center prior to the concert. “Arts for All� is a participatory arts engagement event designed to connect

families with local arts organizations through performances, classes, exhibitions and other activities that the whole family can enjoy. Performers from CirqOvation will also make appearances between scheduled performances by local community groups.

The Arts for All Event is free.

Tickets for the Symphoria “CirqOvation�

Concert are $25, $20 for seniors and $5 for college students. $5.

Kids 18 and under are admitted free to all Symphoria performances.

CNY VEX IQ Robotics Challenge

This challenge uses a robotics kit that was designed to be simple and easy for students as young as 8 to use. The trails will remain open until 9 p.m. on these

evenings if there is adequate snow cover. This is an opportunity for skiers and snowshoers to take advantage of the natural moonlight along Beaver Lake’s 10 miles of trails. Hot chocolate and other refreshments will be available. For their safety night visitors should remember to sign-in and sign-out at the Visitor Center, go with a friend, and bring a flashlight in case a section of the trail is especially dark. Free with nature center admission.

There will be a guided moonlight snowshoe hike at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26 that will explore the Nature Center’s woodlands and meadows on snowshoes. Registration is required for the guided hike beginning at 8 a.m. the day of the hike and space is limited. This program will be offered only when snow conditions are acceptable.

Call that day to register and check conditions. Snowshoes may be rented for $5.

Friday, Jan. 26 Far Above Cayuga’s Wineries Tasting and Silent Auction

A fundraiser to support college scholarships for local students attending Cornell University, this event will feature nearly 100 wines to sample from 19 New York state wineries, each owned or operated by Cornell University alumni, as well as a carving station, hors d’oeuvres, chocolate fountain, dessert table and assorted teas and coffees. The event is open to the public— anyone with a passion for wine and/or supporting local businesses. Tickets are $40 pre-sale or $45 at the door.

TACNY seeks nominations for Celebration of Technology Awards

echnology Alliance of Central New York (TACNY) is now accepting nominations for its Celebration of Technology Awards.

Nominees need not be active members of TACNY or other participating societies, but professional membership in such a society will be given consideration. Award winners will be recognized at the 19th Annual awards banquet on Monday, April 9, at the Holiday Inn, 441 Electronics Parkway, Liverpool.

The following are the award categories and criteria: Technologist of The Year - A resident of Central New York who has made recent

outstanding contributions to advances and improvements in a STEM field, not limited to engineering.

Young Technologist of The Year - resident of Central New York, 35 years old or less, who has made recent outstanding contributions to advances and improvements in a STEM field.

Stem Company of The Year - A Central New York STEM company that has made recent outstanding contributions to new or innovative products, processing technologies, or productivity leading to enhanced business.

Stem Project of The Year - A current outstanding technology project, invention,

or process designed, invented, or constructed in Central New York.

College Educator of The Year - An educator who has made outstanding contributions in STEM Education at the college level in Central New York.

High School Educator of The Year An educator (Grades 9-12), not necessarily a teacher, who has made outstanding contributions in STEM Education at the high school level in Central New York.

Elementary or Middle School Educator of The Year- An educator (Grades K-8), not necessarily a teacher, who has made outstanding contributions in STEM Education at the elementary or middle

school level in Central New York.

Stem Outreach, Individual - A resident of Central New York who has increased interest in science or technology or expanded opportunities for people with limited access to science or technology.

Brass band bravado Second Line Syracuse brings Mardi Gras rhythms to Uriah’s on Sunday, Jan. 21

he new year gets off to a syncopatin’ start when Second Line Syracuse brings its updated brass band sound to Uriah’s restaurant in Liverpool, from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21.

The street-smart ensemble led by trombonist Melissa Gardiner won a 2017 Syracuse Area Music Award for “Best Jazz” recording for its self-titled debut CD. Gardiner started the band in 2015 after visiting New Orleans and witnessing the excitement of second line parades following brass bands playing in the streets.

Just in time for this year’s Mardi Gras season, Second Line Syracuse will give a concert hosted by the Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse at 4 p.m. on Jan. 21, at Uriah’s restaurant, 7990 Oswego Road (Route 57), just north of Liverpool.

Admission costs $12 for JASS members, and $15 for others; uriahsplace.com; 315-622-2250. Food and beverages will be available for sale.

Second Line Syracuse performs spirited music that speaks to all generations.

The combo blows up a storm on Crescent City chestnuts such as “Bogalusa Strut,” “St. James Infirmary” and “Joe Avery’s Second Line,” and they tackle more modern charts like Youngblood’s “Brooklyn” and the

Rolling Stones’ “It’s All Over Now.” The band’s lineup on Sunday at Uriah’s will include trumpeter Jeff Stockham and Nick Fields, trombonists Nicholas Abelgore and Melissa Gardiner, saxophonist Kiel Clark, tuba player Matt Rossi and percussionists Byron Cage and Josh Dekaney.

The Salt City met the Crescent City on July 22, 2015, when Second Line Syracuse performed alongside New Orleans’ Dirty Dozen Brass Band at the Westcott Theater. The two groups played a polyrhythmic version of “Paul Barbarin’s Second Line,” penned by the legendary New Orleans drummer in 1963.

That same year, Second Line Syracuse was voted “Best Jazz Band” in the Syracuse New Times Readers Poll and. In 2016, the band performed a mains-stage set at the Syracuse Jazz Festival on a bill headlined by Trombone Shorty.

Over the past few years Melissa Gardiner – a University of Michigan and Juilliard School alumna who has studied with trombonists Steve Turre and Wycliffe Gordon – has emerged as one of the best and busiest musicians in Central New York.

She leads several Syracuse-based jazz combos, teaches at Syracuse University and Cornell, and hosts a weekly youth-oriented jam session every Sunday afternoon at Funk’N Waffles in downtown Syracuse.

Second Line Syracuse, a New Orleans-style brass band led by trombonist Melissa Gardiner, won a 2017 Syracuse Area Music Award for Best Jazz recording. The band will perform at 4 p.m. Jan. 21, 2018, at Uriah’s restaurant on Route 57 in Liverpool.

Forbes earns second Team of the Week honor Kenardo Forbes has been named to the MASL Team of the Week for the second time this season. His performance at Florida on Saturday pushed the Syracuse Silver Knights to a record over .500 for the first time since the beginning of the season.

Forbes scored the game winning goal in overtime against the Tropics to give Syracuse its second overtime victory of the season. The Jamaican completed a hat trick with the goal. This marks the second time Forbes has scored a hat trick this season. His first hat trick was back in week six – also against Florida. Forbes earned MASL Team of the Week honors for that performance

This is the fifth week this season that a Syracuse player has been selected to the MASL Team of the Week. Previous Silver Knights to be named to the MASL Team of the Week this season include Slavisa Ubiparipovic, Joey Tavernese and Ben Ramin.

With his hat trick, Forbes becomes the second Syracuse player to score double-digit goals this season. The midfielder has 11 goals so far this year. He is two goals behind Tavernese, who has the team lead in goals.

City seeks community input on focus of 2018 Syracuse residents can help choose challenge for Office of Innovation

The City of Syracuse’s Office of Innovation, or “i-team,” seeks community input to determine the office’s focus area for 2018.

Each year, the i-team focuses on one challenge facing the city and uses a data-driven approach to create and implement innovative solutions. In the past, the team has focused on infrastructure, opportunity and housing.

Kicking off his new term, Mayor Ben Walsh and the i-team are asking for public input to select the priority area.

“We are working to establish a culture of inclusiveness, where citizens truly feel like engaged participants in our local government,” said Walsh.

“This is among the first of what we anticipate to be many opportunities for

the people of our city to be involved in decision-making processes that impact them and our community at large.”

Individuals interested in submitting their ideas can visit innovatesyracuse.com/ideas, then choose from one of the listed topic areas , submit a different topic or provide more details about a specific idea or challenge.

til Jan. 24. Then they will determine the most popular responses and release those to the public for a two-week voting period. The top topics that receive the most votes will go to the Mayor for final review.

The Banff Mountain World Film Festival is coming to Syracuse. The inaugural festival will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

All screenings will take place at the North Syracuse Junior High School Auditorium.

The festival will screen six to seven films with a total running time of approximately three hours. Tickets are available for $15 and can be purchased at the door or at eventbrite.com/d/ny--syracuse/banff/.

Every ticket purchased will go directly to benefit the Friends of the CanTeen, a CNY after school drop in program for kids grades 8-12 run by caring and professionally trained staff who operate as role models and advocates of positive youth development.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival began in 1976 at Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada and has grown exponentially over the years.

The fest began as an annual presentation at Banff National Park of over300 documentaries and short films pertaining to mountain sports, culture, and outdoor living.

After the conclusion of the Banff Film Festival the films begin a world-wide tour visiting several hundred cities in over 20 different countries. Each host city chooses a variety of films to show at their local festivals often highlighting community interests or sharing adventures from across the globe.

Register now for Young Boater Safety Certification at CNY Boat Show New York Sea Grant is now taking registrations for the free, all-in-one-day Young Boater certification training to be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, in Syracuse at the Central New York Boat Show at the NYS Fairgrounds.

Pre-registration is required for the limited space seating for the course taught by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 21 personnel.

New York Sea Grant is taking registrations by phone at 315-312-3042.

Successful completion of the eight-hour training and same-day proctored exam is required for youth ages 10 to 17 to legally operate a motorized boat or watercraft alone on New York waters.

Each youth registering for this edition of the Young Boater safety course will receive three free admission passes into the 2018 Central New York Boat Show that is the largest and oldest boat show in New York. Participants are asked to provide for their own lunch.

Visitors to the Boating Information Center at the show will see the 2018 edition of the New York Sea Grant Discover Clean and Safe Boating campaign vessel with information on approved life jackets, boating safety, and voluntary watercraft inspection to help slow the spread of aquatic invasive species. The vessel for this award-winning educational campaign is different each year.

The show features more than 500 boats of all styles; water recreation equipment; marine accessories, boating and fishing guides; yacht clubs; and exhibits by waterfront destinations, tourism organizations, and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in three buildings at the NYS Fairgrounds.

The 2018 Central New York Boat Show hours are 1-9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15; 1-9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17; and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18. Show admission is $10 per person; 13 and younger free.

Get 10 free flowering trees from the Arbor Day Foundation Residents in your state can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January 2018.

By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two Sargent crabapples, three American redbuds, two Washington hawthorns and three white flowering dogwoods.

“These beautiful trees will beautify your home with lovely flowers of pink, yellow and white colors,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

“These trees are perfect for large and small spaces, and they will provide food and habitat for songbirds.”

The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign.

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between Feb. 1 and May 31, with enclosed planting instructions. The six- to 12-inch tall trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge.
