Boypower celebrates 50 years World Heavyweight George Foreman to be featured at event The BIG EAST, National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Colgate University Athletics, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Boys and Girls Club. This year’s Honorees, Arnie and Libby Rubenstein, will be acknowledged and recognized for their diverse community involvement spanning over five decades. The Rubensteins have been long-time supporters of the Longhouse Council, Boy Scouts of America, and have been involved serving their community by supporting, in various capacities, the Jewish community, BOCES, Better Business Bureau, National Panel of Arbitrators, Upstate Hospital Foundation Board and Advocates Board at Upstate Medical University. Guest speaker Forman, who is best known for his career in the ring. turned pro in 1969, defeating Gregorio Peralta and George Chuvalo. In 1973, Foreman “dispatched” heavyweight Joe Frazier in just two rounds. He defended his title successfully twice against Jose “King” Roman and Ken Norton before losing the title to Muhammad Ali in “The Rumble in the Jungle” in 1974. Foreman went on to defeat others, (Joe Frazier and Scott LeDoux) before “dropping a 12-round decision to Jimmy Young” in 1977, after which Foreman retired from the ring to become an ordained minister. Foreman returned to the ring with wins over Dwight Qawi, Bert Cooper and Gerry Cooney. In 1994, Foreman defeated Michael Moorer to regain the heavyweight championship and subsequently retired from the ring with a 76-5 record in 1997. The Longhouse Council, Boy Scouts of America will be commemorating 50 years of Boypower this year. On Wednesday, May 2, the Boypower event will be held at the War Memorial Center in Syracuse. The event’s Chairman Doug Logan recently announced that this year’s Boypower will feature world heavyweight, George Foreman. In addition, the Longhouse Doug Logan Council, Boy Scouts of America will be honoring Arnie and Libby Rubenstein for their service to the community. Logan served 19 years as “Voice of the Orange” for Syracuse University Football and Basketball on WSYR Radio and as sports director of WIXT-TV, Channel 9. Most recently, Logan spent 10 years as director of Time Warner Cable Sports Channel. Logan is a 2007 inductee into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame and is a Syracuse University “Letter Winner of Distinction.” He is a three-time state Sportscaster of the Year and has twice served as president of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Logan’s extensive community volunteerism earned him the “Distinguished Citizen Award” from the BSA in 2004. He has enthusiastically emceed the annual Boypower Dinner the past 25 years. Doug’s other personal and professional honors have come from The Salvation Army, Vera House, ARC of Onondaga, Catholic Charities, SU Whitman School,
