Throughout May, Onondaga County public libraries will collect worn, tattered or faded American Flags that need to be respectfully retired. Flags may be dropped off at any library until May 17. Collected flags will be properly burned at the Memorial Day Watchfire ceremony sponsored by the Central New York Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. The watchfire, based on the military ritual of guiding missing soldiers back to their units after battle, serves as a tribute to American service members who have sacrificed, fought and died in service to our country. It also provides an opportunity to properly and respectfully retire unserviceable American flags. The watchfire ceremony is free and open to the public. It will be held on Sunday, May 24, at the Veterans Memorial Watchfire Park at the New York State Fairgrounds. The pyre and respectful burning of flags begins at dusk.
