Cazenovia celebrates the season

Kate Hill

On Friday, Dec. 1, the Cazenovia community gathered for the 46th Annual Cazenovia Christmas Walk and Village Tree Lighting. Organized by the Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce, the evening featured notfor-profits set up along Albany Street, shopping in the downtown stores, caroling, dance performances, the arrival of Santa and more.

Cazenovia Lake Watershed Council presents annual summit By kate Hill Staff Writer

On Saturday, Dec. 2, the Cazenovia Lake Watershed Council (CLWC) sponsored its annual Lake Summit at the Cazenovia Public Library. The CLWC is a cooperative organization made up of two members of the Cazenovia Town Board, two Village of Cazenovia Trustees, and one representative of the Cazenovia Lake Association (CLA), which is a group of residents, homeowners, business owners, and elected officials that works to protect the environmental and recreational sustainability of the lake. This year’s summit focused on the key challenges facing Cazenovia Lake and ongoing and upcoming initiatives.

Town update

Cazenovia Town Councilor Jimmy Golub, who serves as the liaison to the CLA, informed the summit attendees that the town’s lake-related responsibilities include operating the weed harvester, serving as the lead agency when acquiring the permits required to treat the lake for Eurasian watermilfoil, and partnering with the village to spearhead certain initiatives related to preventing the introduction of

invasive species into the lake. The town is currently exploring options for helping to prevent the introduction of the invasive aquatic species hydrilla, which is more virulent and difficult to control than milfoil. “We have spent literally millions of dollars trying to keep milfoil in control,” Golub said. “Milfoil is manageable, but Hydrilla may not be. We don’t have really good answers for this, and we don’t have unlimited resources either. . . . We need to be proactive.” According to Golub, the town is looking into purchasing a waterless boat cleaning station for the Lakeland Park boat launch. The approximately $40,000 system would be paid for with grants and by the town. The town also aims to work with the village to improve boat inspections and to encourage boaters coming from other bodies of water to use the Lakeside Park launch.

Eurasian Watermilfoil management

CLA Vice President Sam Woods discussed Cazenovia’s ongoing Eurasian watermilfoil management efforts and the results of an August 2023 rake toss study. The lake has been chemically treated six times with the herbicide Renovate, which was typically applied every other year. In 2021, with financial assistance from the

CLA, regions of the lake were treated with the newly approved herbicide ProcellaCOR EC. Each year, a rake toss study is conducted to monitor the impact of the chemical treatment on species richness and the amount of milfoil in the plant community. “The rake toss study that we do every year [looks] at over 300 sites on the lake,” said Woods. “It really is just what it sounds like. They take a rake, they toss it out, they bring it back up onto the boat, and each weed is actually counted, and the type of weeds [are recorded].” According to Woods, the rake toss studies conducted from 2009 to 2023 have shown that Renovate and ProcellaCOR have not harmed the native plant species within the lake. The late summer surveys have also shown that ProcellaCOR is more effective at reducing the amount of milfoil than Renovate. In 2021, following the ProcellaCOR treatment, only 25 out of the 302 sampling points showed evidence of milfoil. The rake toss study performed shortly after the most effective Renovate treatment showed evidence of milfoil at 86 of the 302 sites. In 2022, the year after the ProcellaCOR treatment, there were 114 occurrences of milfoil. “That was actually about equivalent to what

Cazenovia Lake Association President Dave Miller discussed the threat posed by the invasive aquatic plant hydrilla. we got on treatment years with Renovate,” said Woods. “. . . [ProcellaCOR is] very, very effective. Of course, this summer, it [was] bouncing back like crazy.” The 2023 rake toss showed evidence of the plant at 229 sites. “You’re never going to eradicate that plant; you’re going to knock it down,” said Woods. According to CLA President Dave Miller, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation permits 190 acres of the lake to be treated at once, and the southwest end of the lake is not chemically treated. The next ProcellaCOR treatment is scheduled for 2024 and will cost around $200,000. Summit l Page 2

Village board discusses upcoming Lakeland Park project By kate Hill Staff Writer

During the Dec. 4 Village of Cazenovia Board of Trustees meeting, Cazenovia Area Community Development Association Executive Director Lauren Lines provided an update on a future project at Lakeland Park. According to Lines, the village has a $500,000 grant to redo the pier and enhance the beach and the parking area at the park. The grant requires a dollar-to-dollar

match. “We have a master plan for the park that has very conceptual drawings, but we need more detailed plans,” said Lines. “So, I was suggesting we get a landscape architect — it’s covered under the grant — to do a detailed design, so then we can take those designs and graphics and visuals and go out to other funders, [such as] the Community Foundation, maybe local stakeholders like the lake association, and kind of sell the project and make up the match.” Lines added that she thinks the first

step is to get an estimate for the structural work on the pier’s stone wall and then figure out how much money would be left for the beach. Mayor Kurt Wheeler said he agreed that having visuals would be helpful. “This is going to be very highly visible,” he said. “[The pier], in some ways, is maybe the most iconic thing in Cazenovia. Coincidentally, Caz Life has chosen that as their logo — the pier and the lights. So, I think there will be a lot of interest and a lot of support. Certainly, most of us who are parents

have spent many hours down there with our kids at the beach. Making that a more attractive and safer and better environment for families and kids and residents and visitors I think will have a lot of appeal.” According to Lines, the village was given five years to complete the project. The village completed another project this year at the park that involved the reconstruction of the historic stone lake wall and canal wall. “Some aspects of the canal wall and Village l Page 3

Hydrilla

Hydrilla is one of the most difficult aquatic invasive plants to control and eradicate in the United States. The plant can produce very dense mats of vegetation, and infestations can have negative impacts on boating, fishing, swimming, tourism, native flora and fauna, and waterfront property values. Hydrilla spreads by seeds, buds, tubers, and fragments. The plant can be introduced to new locations by waterfowl and boating activities. Fragments of the plant, which are easily caught and transported by boats and boat trailers, can sprout roots and establish new populations. While it has typically been found in the southern U.S., Hydrilla has started moving northward, and it is now in Cayuga Lake, Twin Lakes in Connecticut, and the Connecticut River. To demonstrate the threat posed by hydrilla, Miller showed the video “Invading the CT River – The Spread of Hydrilla,” which can be viewed for free on YouTube. Following the video, Woods stated that there is currently no herbicide available that controls hydrilla without also killing native plants. Miller added that, because it is shallow and there is a lot of sediment at the bottom, Cazenovia Lake would be an ideal habitat for hydrilla. “The key is that there is not a 100 percent sure proof method to keep it out of the lake,” said Miller. “We have multiple launch access points, there are a lot of ways it could get into the lake. However, I feel like our responsibility is to do what we can in order to prevent it and to take whatever measures we can to do so. It can’t just be the CLA, the town, and the village; it has to be everybody.” According to Miller, the cleaning station that the CLA, village, and town are considering is essentially a big vacuum. The stewards at the Lakeside Park boat launch would ask that all boats coming from other bodies of water be cleaned before entering the lake.

CLA project updates

CLA board member Bob Crichton provided updates on three projects that are part of the CLA’s five-year plan. According to Crichton, the CLA’s water quality monitoring project is aimed at detecting changes over time that might be early indicators of a potential problem, monitoring the food chain to determine the health of the lake ecosystem, and alerting entities of areas to avoid if a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) is present. The organization intends to compile a fouryear summary report on its findings in mid2024. The CLA’s sampling program involves plankton and invertebrates sampling three times per year at three locations on the lake, water sampling one to two times per year at the 12 highest inflow tributaries, sampling potential HABs as they occur, and testing for zinc. The zinc testing was initiated late last year in response to the artificial turf field installation project at the high school. The goal is to ensure that the zinc that leaches from the rubber infill on the artificial turf does not get into the lake. “I’m not saying that there are no filtration systems in the system that is being put in at the high school,” said Crichton. “They claim to have a very state-of-the-art one that will collect a lot of this information, but we want to make sure it’s not getting down to the lake.” The zinc testing will continue into 2025.

Upstate Freshwater Institute performs the lab work for the chemical analysis, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry does the zinc work and HAB identification, Cornell does the zooplankton identification, and Cooper Research Labs does the invertebrate analysis. Crichton next discussed the Mill Street Dam Removal Project, which is aimed at addressing backflow issues at the south end of the lake. There are two dams downstream of the lake outlet. The lake dam or upper dam is located near Carpenter’s Pond. Mill Street dam (lower dam or creek dam), which was built to serve the Erie Canal system, is located a little further downstream. Both are owned and operated by the New York State Canal Corporation. Just east (downstream) of the lake dam, Chittenango Creek meets the water flowing out of the lake to form a single channel. When the water level between the dams is high, a significant precipitation/snow melt can cause the water to flow the wrong way; instead of moving downstream, water backflows over the lake dam and into the lake, carrying with it significant amounts of sediment and pollutants. Crichton reported that there have been at least 12 documented backflow events since 2020. The CLA found that the water entering the lake during the black flow events had much higher concentrations of phosphorus, suspended solids, and nitrogen than the water at any of the tributaries coming into the lake. The phosphorus values were 1.8 to 6.6 times higher than the tributary values collected in 2021, and the suspended solids were 5.5 to 11.4 times higher. Crichton said the canal corporation is in favor of the removal of the Mill Street dam, but the project is complex because there are multiple parties involved. “The [Canal Corporation] has kept the water lower between the two dams,” Crichton said. “Two of the three sluice gates were open all summer, but there was a situation back in October where Tuscarora Lake had to lower their [water level] seven feet in order to do some work on the dam. Well, that flows into Chittenango Creek, so that coupled with an inch and a half of rain that we had, caused a backflow event.” Last year, the engineering company Ramboll conducted a study for the CLA on the downstream effects of the partial or full removal of the Mill Street dam. With help from the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association, the village has secured a grant for $67,000 plus matching funds for additional design work targeting backflow elimination using hydrologic and hydraulic modeling of both the creek and the lake. The firm Gomez and Sullivan has been selected to conduct the study. “The funds are still with the department of state,” said Crichton. “They should be released hopefully soon, and then [Gomez and Sullivan], weather permitting, can start doing the work the village has commissioned them to do. We hope by the third quarter of 2024, we have some feedback from their study.” The study will help define the next steps of the project. Miller added that one of the goals of the dam removal is to restore the stream between the dams to its natural, pre-Erie Canal state and appearance. Crichton concluded his report with an update on a recently purchased custom-built electrofishing boat. An electrofishing boat uses an electric field to temporarily stun fish that can then be collected with long-handled dip nets for identification. Data collected from electrofishing can be used to determine the abundance, density, species composition, and health of fish populations.

LAKESIDE VISTA

Before Cazenovia College closed, the CLA partnered with the institution to purchase the electrofishing boat. Once the college closed, the CLA instead teamed up with Madison County to cover the $88,667 purchase and move forward with the acquisition of the boat. The CLA contributed $63,667 with money from its non-treatment fund plus individual contributions directed specifically towards the purchase. The county stepped up to secure a $25,000 grant from the Finger Lakes - Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance on behalf of the CLA. The county owns the equipment per an agreement with the CLA. In addition to modernizing Cazenovia’s fish tracking abilities and providing better data on fish populations, the boat has also created a new relationship with the SUNY Morrisville Environmental Biology Department. Since the boat was delivered in July, SUNY Morrisville and Dr. Thad Yorks — a senior planner with the Madison County Planning Department and an adjunct professor at SUNY Morrisville — have held on-water workshops. SUNY Morrisville began a 2023 fish study in October. “You’ll [typically] see it out there at night,” said Crichton. “You’ll see a bunch of lights. You’ll see some things hanging off it. That’s the boat that does the fish studies for us, and It’s pretty cool.”

Village update

Village Trustee and Parks Commissioner Tom Tait provided updates on Lakeland Park and Lakeside Park. This year, the village completed a project to reconstruct the historic stone wall along the lake and the northern side of the canal. The village is now in the initial planning phase for some additional work around the swimming area and the pier. To operate the swimming area, the village must comply with all Madison County Department of Health mandates, which include a requirement that there must be four lifeguards on duty whenever the swimming area is open. “The availability of trained lifeguards is becoming very problematic,” said Tait. “To make things worse, we are competing with Green Lakes and others that pay a few dollars more per hour. So, the village has committed to acquiring the best-trained lifeguards for that area and to pay the going rate, so we can all [safely enjoy] that asset that we have.” Swimming formally ended this year in the middle of August, about a week earlier than usual, due to funding and lifeguard availability. In 2024, the village will strive to have a June 24 through Aug. 23 swimming period, which would be a week longer than usual. The 2024 Cazenovia Joint Youth Recreation Program will run from July 8 through Aug. 2. Lakeside Park is open from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The stewards’ last shift ends at 8 p.m. The boat launch, which is owned, operated, and maintained by the village, opened this year on April 22 and closed on Oct. 21. According to Tait, the park’s four stewards are currently paid less than minimum wage. To offer them a competitive hourly rate, some fees will be raised. “Their role is absolutely critical in reducing the likelihood of invasive [species] entering Cazenovia Lake through the boat launch,” said Tait. The stewards will be given updated job descriptions in advance of the 2024 season that will place their sole focus on the boat launch. Currently, they also oversee the pavilions and ball fields. Anyone interested in serving as a boat launch steward should contact Tait at ttait@ twcny.rr.com. The village will likely eliminate its $10 oneday launch passes, which were used this year

Cazenovia Republican 136 times. “This obviously has proven to be not fair to people who are paying $75 to access the lake, and the $10 in no way covers the expenses associated with both the clerical work and the stewards,” said Tait. The village is also considering eliminating the hotel passes, which allow hotel guests free passes to get on the lake. Tait said the village is not likely to approve the use of Lakeside Park for fishing tournaments as recent applicants required most or all the available parking spots for the weekend and the events place stress on a sizeable number of fish. The fees to rent the park’s two pavilions will be raised. For groups of 12 or fewer, there is no need to reserve the pavilions. When renting the pavilions or any permitted village space, the village will now request a one-day beer and wine permit or liquor license through the New York State Liquor Authority if alcohol is to be served at an event. Small, informal gatherings will not be held to this requirement.

Largemouth bass analysis

During the final presentation of the summit, William Snyder, professor of natural resource conservation at SUNY Morrisville, presented data from a cursory analysis of Cazenovia Lake’s largemouth bass population. Based on data collected through trap-netting and electrofishing, Snyder concluded that the largemouth bass population appears healthy and well-fed. He also found that the Proportional Stock Densities, which are measures of species size structure, are exceptionally high, either due to low harvest pressure or a sampling bias towards larger fish. He recommended increased comprehensive sampling during the summer at night, stomach content analysis on apex carnivores, and documentation of fish age and growth via hard parts analysis. Snyder announced that he is developing a research project for a student to complete as part of a new bachelor of science degree at SUNY Morrisville. “Possibly I could have a student who would be available all summer long to conduct [additional] research out there,” Snyder said. Snyder also stated that as the lake has aged and become more nutrient-rich and heavily vegetated, it has become less of a walleye habitat and more of a largemouth bass habitat. According to Woods, New York State tried to restock Cazenovia Lake with walleye several times, but they did not survive. “They want open, vegetation-free water and little silvery fish that slide down easy,” said Snyder, who also noted that walleye are not effective predators of small sunfish. Snyder also commended the Cazenovia Lake Association for all the work it does to learn about and protect the lake. “I’ve been involved with a lot of lakes, and I’ve been asked my opinion by a lot of lake associations, and I don’t know if I have ever seen an organization where everybody is working together and [where] all your efforts and the angles of your research are so comprehensive. You folks are doing a marvelous job, and I’m impressed.” At the end of the summit, Miller pointed out that only about 50 percent of the approximately 250 homes on the lake donate to the CLA. “If we could push that number up to 60 percent or 70 percent, that would help a lot,” said Miller. “We get a lot of donations from people in the town. Any donation we are thankful for, believe me. The lake benefits the whole town. Our school taxes are lower because of the lake, our quality of life is a lot better because of the lake, obviously, so it’s not just a lakefront owner issue.” To donate to the CLA and learn more about its work, visit cazlake.org or email info@cazlake.org.

Salvation Army Student Ambassadors ring in the season By kate Hill Staff Writer

Throughout the next few weeks, Cazenovia High School’s Salvation Army student ambassadors will be ringing in the holiday season with their annual Red Kettle Drive. The bell-ringing fundraiser will benefit the local community through CazCares, a food pantry and clothing closet that serves lowincome residents of the Cazenovia Central School District (CCSD) and surrounding areas of Madison County. The drive is a student-run initiative organized each year in coordination with CazCares Client Services Director GiGi Redmond and with support from the CCSD administration.

This year, Salvation Army Student Ambassadors Max Reger, a freshman, Maura Phillips, a sophomore, Owen Woodworth, a junior, and Reid McMurtrie, a senior, are taking the lead in spreading the word and recruiting high school volunteers to ring bells at Kinney Drugs at 41 Albany St. and Tops Friendly Market at 71 Nelson St. every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday until Christmas. The students will be ringing at Kinney and Tops from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. “We expect a new set of students for every one-hour shift,” said McMurtrie. The student ambassadors are responsible for organizing the bellringing schedule, signing up other students as volunteers, setting up

and taking down the kettles, and collecting and counting the money raised. According to McMurtrie, the fundraising goal this year is $10,000. Ninety percent of the donations collected will stay in the local community to help meet the needs of Cazenovia area families. “CazCares has connected us to the Salvation Army and helps to distribute the donations,” said McMurtrie, who has been involved with the Red Kettle Drive since her freshman year. “Being part of the Red Kettle Campaign has shown me my passion for community service, and I love being able to share that with other students.” CazCares is located at 101 Nelson St. For more information, visit cazcares.org.

Mark Tugaw named Cazenovia’s Teacher of the Year By kate Hill Staff Writer

Seventh-grade social studies teacher Mark Tugaw was recently named Teacher of the Year by the Cazenovia Central School District (CCSD). According to CCSD Superintendent Chris DiFulvio, the district solicits nominations for the award each year from its teachers, and past award recipients vote on the winner. “Mark is one of the strongest relationship builders I know,” said DiFulvio. “He works closely with students to get to know them and demonstrates genuine interest in his students. I believe it is Mark’s ability to relate to anyone that has made him a deserving recipient of this year’s award.” Tugaw has been teaching at Cazenovia Middle School (CMS) since September 2000. He graduated from Liverpool High School in 1990 and attended Onondaga Community College and SUNY Plattsburgh. Tugaw earned his undergraduate degree in criminal justice and sociology with the goal of someday working for the Drug Enforcement Administration or as a police officer. We had hoped to start this project in 2024, but if we need to push it back until 2025, that’s still within the window of the grant, and that’s totally reasonable to give us more time to raise the matching funds.” The board’s January regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Village Municipal Building, 90 Albany St.

In a Teacher of the Year questionnaire distributed by CCSD, Tugaw credited his eldest brother, Curt, who was a special education teacher, for helping to shape his desire to teach, and his brother Shawn, a retired police officer, for inspiring his desire to serve the public. “My mother taught us about love and relationships, and my father taught us about life and the importance of a strong work ethic,” he said. “. . . I’ve always had a passion for working with teenagers and a desire to work with challenging kids. Early in my career, I volunteered for a year in an alternative education program at North Syracuse Junior High and worked with several ‘at-risk’ students. That experience solidified my desire to work with teenagers during what is a tough time for many.” Tugaw received his graduate degree in secondary education (social studies) from LeMoyne College and completed his student teaching work at Fayetteville-Manlius High School and Lincoln Middle School in the Syracuse City School District. Tree transportation It is now December and the Christmas season is in full swing. Almost everywhere anyone looks they will see the lights and decorations, snowmen and Santa Clauses, and of course the trees. For many people one of the highlights of the season is going to get a tree. Whether this is at a local lot, tree farm, picking a precut tree or going out and selecting the perfect one and sawing it down, this is a beloved tradition for many people. Finding the right one, just tall enough, full enough, with the right shape can be a challenge, but all in all is something many seem to enjoy. But once the perfect tree is found there is the matter of getting it home. According to AAA, much like moving furniture, appliances, or other large objects, transporting a tree is no different. If not properly secured, a tree can cause vehicle damage such as scratched paint, torn door seals or distorted window frames. Even worse, it could fly off or out of the vehicle and become a danger to other drivers. AAA research shows that 44% of Americans planning to purchase a real Christmas tree would transport the tree using unsafe methods. This includes 20% who would tie the tree to the roof of their vehicle without using a roof rack and 24% who planned to place the tree in the bed of their pickup truck unsecured. Among those who planned to purchase a live Christmas tree, 16% have previously experienced a Christmas tree falling off or out of their vehicle during transport. According to AAA, if a tree is improperly secured to a car, it can cost drivers as much as $1,500 in repairs. Twine, ropes or straps can wear away paint and tear rubber seals when routed through door or window openings. Closing a door over tree tie-downs may also permanently distort the window frame and tree branches can cause scratches to the paint. AAA shared some tips about how to get the tree home safely this holiday season. Plan ahead, before heading out to buy a real Christmas tree, make sure to bring strong rope or ratchet straps, an old blanket, gloves and of course – the right vehicle. One with a roof rack is ideal, but a pickup truck, SUV, van or minivan can work just as well. Wrap and cover the tree once you’ve found the perfect tree, have the lot wrap it in netting before loading it. Loose branches can also be secured with rope or twine to help protect the tree from damage. Also, prior to loading the tree, cover the roof with an old blanket to prevent scratches to the paint and protect the car from any damage. Place the tree on the roof rack or in the bed of the truck with the trunk facing the front of the car. If the vehicle does not have a roof rack and is large enough – place the tree inside. Tie down the tree at its bottom, center and top using strong rope or nylon ratchet straps. Avoid using the nylon offered by many tree lots. Use fixed vehicle tiedown points and loop the rope or strap around the tree trunk above a branch to prevent any side-to-side or front-to-rear movement. Once tied down, give the tree several strong tugs from various angles to make sure it is secured in place and will not come loose. Drive slowly and take back roads if possible. Higher speeds can create significant airflow that can damage your tree or challenge even the best tie-down methods. For more information about car insurance, stop by your local branch or visit AAA.com.

Table talk

There are few televisions programs that I really look forward to. One of them, Blue Bloods, is scheduled for 10 p.m. on Fridays. The important segment usually comes at the end of the program, after the three moral and ethically centered story lines are wrapped up. Four generations of the Reagan family will be sharing their Sunday supper and, each time, encouraging me to try emulate the same conviviality and family strength in my home, around my Sunday dinner table. But times are as they are, and that is more of a wish, a dream, than a reality. And so, as dreams do come from real life, my sleep last night was wrapped around a dinner table, but, also as dreams do, it was enigmatic, curious and exhilarating at the same time. The setting was movable, my table of changing lengths was at the same time in the tiny kitchens in Brooklyn,

Lake Carmel, Marcellus, our camp and, oddly, in the old teacher’s cafeteria at Marcellus High School. It did seem to be sporting a tablecloth, at least in some areas, and the whole table, the short or long versions, was lit by a line of tapers. I am thinking that these were remembrances of the boxes of tapers that I bought when Chappell’s was going out of business a zillion years ago, when every well-dressed dinner table was expected to be lit by candles. They have been stored in the Hoosier that sits in the corner of our dining room forgotten for too many years. It was only last week that I offered them to my daughter, who had her Thanksgiving table lit by two lovely tapers. Seated around this surreal table were my family, my spouse and children, grandchildren, my siblings, parents, grandparents … even those who I had never met. There were neigh-

bors from Brooklyn. Maureen Gillen who lived three houses toward third avenue was there, as were my friends from Our Lady of Perpetual Help school, Nora and Anne and Mary and Claudette .. young and smiling. High school friends, friends with whom I still connect, sat among the guests. Was this a reflection of the phone call that I received yesterday from John Lombardi, a man who was a boy in my high school class I haven’t seen in over 60 years? Teachers that I loved and didn’t love were sprinkled here and there as were coworkers from jobs I had over the years. I remember stopping … I don’t think I was serving any food in this dream … to try to talk with Mike Sawyer, the sine qua non of educators at Syracuse University, but the scene changed before I could get his attention and I was then in the kitchen asking for help with the table. I tried to get

back to Dr. Sawyer, but the table moved on with friends from Marcellus and Syracuse and pets that I had loved and love - my Tippy, Puppy, Snuffer, Chica, Kiki, Mitsy and more… my companion animals … how they made such a difference in my life. They passed as the I moved down the table, recognizing, acknowledging, wondering. And there were many of my students, those young lives with whom I was privileged to teach a love of learning, who taught me as much as I taught them. There were two young girls waving papers at me, and several young men in athletic uniforms eating voraciously, waving with one hand. Among them, scattered among the diners was a smiling group of youngsters who spent some hours after school in detention. I’m sure that experience stayed with them. Or not. My grandsons were Table l Page 7

Finding a solution

To the editor: The mission of the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association (CACDA) is to enhance economic vitality and preserve the rural historic character of our region. One of our most significant priorities over the past 10 years has been to find a solution for the vacant eyesores that have persisted for two decades at 99/103 Albany St. (the former NAPA store and service station). After countless meetings with the former property owners, developers, state agencies and members of the community, it seemed at times as if a solution was not within our reach. Very rarely, when driving through Central New York, do you see redevelopment on blighted property within a downtown. More often, you see new developments occurring at the outskirts,

contributing to sprawl, reducing walkability and investment in downtown, and leaving large gaps and empty buildings along Main Streets. The main goal of the developer who finally stepped up to address the problem has been to eliminate the eyesore that detracts from our otherwise beautiful village and we applaud their commitment to taking on this challenging project. If there had been an easy solution, someone would have moved forward years ago. While the project has not yet been officially submitted to the village for approval, the developer has sought input on the design from the very beginning. We are encouraged by many of the smart growth elements that are included in the project. First, the building is consistent in size and scale with the existing downtown. Locating the front of the building at the sidewalk to maintain the existing sight line with the facades of

adjacent buildings, is a defining characteristic of traditional downtowns. It would be rare to find a building that is set back from the sidewalk in a traditional development pattern. Architects and planners describe this as essential for creating a sense of enclosure that pedestrians find more interesting and comfortable. We also appreciate the usage of underground parking, which eliminates any unsightly parking lots and maximizes the use of the space. Second, the added retail and residential space will have a significant impact on the local economy. Additional residents living within walkable distance to downtown amenities will increase economic activity. Additional retail opportunities will enhance our visibility as a destination, thus supporting all downtown businesses. Research has shown that successful downtowns provide 4-6 hours of things for visitors to do as well as meeting resi-

dents’ daily needs. This creates a critical mass for downtown sustainability. This project will go a long way toward reaching that critical mass. In Revitalizing Main Street (National Trust for Historic Preservation, 2009), the author describes how new development in historic downtowns “…should be designed to look appropriate and compatible with surrounding buildings, yet still look like it was built today. While there is no clear blueprint for what new infill should look like, it is generally agreed upon that it should not pretend to be historic by too closely mimicking older facades, but it should be sensitive to the character of its neighbors.” This project achieves just that. We look forward to the added vitality that this project will bring to Cazenovia. Lauren Lines Executive Director and CACDA Board of Directors

OPINION

A brave, bold SU hire Once it was announced, the rumbling and grumbling started. Fran Brown, the new head coach of Syracuse University football, is not a big name. He’s never served time as a head coach or any length of time as a coordinator. He’s just 40. This wasn’t exactly what athletic director John Wildhack had promised. Among other things, he said he was looking for an experienced head coach to take the place of the fired Dino Babers, so the names bandied about, like Dan Mullen, fit that very specific criteria. Brown? Sure, he’s on the staff of mighty Georgia, but merely as a defensive backs coach, not as a coordinator whose salary is in seven figures. To a lot of the uninitiated, this hire can seem a stretch, a gamble, one that could really backfire. But forget for a minute the wins-and-losses part. This will get addressed soon enough, as will all the questions about recruiting, the transfer portal, Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) issues and the like. Focus instead on what SU has done that few power-conference programs would even dare try –

hire a young, relatively unproven, Black assistant coach instead of a retread. The sad reality is that coaching at the highest level in college football remains, for the most part, monochromatic. Name a big program, or a high-profile job, and almost every time it’s a White person in charge, absorbing all of those dozens of sideline shots we’re subjected to every Saturday in the fall. It’s not surprising. When you’re dealing with a sport bathed in traditions and constantly evoking a more romantic past (which wasn’t that pure to begin with), making forward-thinking hiring decisions is rare to nonexistent. Sure, young coaches might get a chance at a powerhouse – if they are already on staff and are White, like Ryan Day did at Ohio State or Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma. Doing this, intentionally or not, makes the whole thing seem like a closed shop for anyone who looks different but aspires to more. It’s quite likely that Brown, for example, saw no possible path to a dream job at an SEC or Big Ten school. Maybe they’d let him eventually land a coordinator’s post,

but anything more? The powersthat-be and the (mostly White) alumni might not stand for it. So yes, if Brown does well here at SU, he might not be long for Central New York. Such is life in a power conference without a deep pool of talented players to draw from unless you expand your scope to the entire Northeast, as Brown knows he must do. All of this is difficult to admit and swallow. Part of life, though, is accepting a reality that is less than ideal, but can still lead to plenty of success if approached and attacked the right way. Late in his tenure, as another promising season sank into mediocrity, Babers addressed this topic head-on. He said it was difficult to truly build a team when the combination of restlessness, a transfer portal and possible NIL riches prevented SU from sustaining success. Most saw this as an excuse for not winning, and it only may have hastened Babers’ departure. But NIL and transfer portals aren’t going away, and Brown’s biggest task, assigned from coaching the on-field product, is to convince recruits that Syracuse is an actual

ingley’s an American original. Is he a pug-a-poo? A brug? A chi-poo? Or maybe a bossi-poo? No one knows for sure. We think he’s a pom-a-pug - a pomeranian/pug mix. While we’re not sure of his breed, we do know he’s about eight years old and came to the shelter when his family could no longer care for him. He can be a little aloof at first, but once he gets to know you, he’s affectionate and charming. At twenty-three pounds, he’s the perfect size. He enjoys the simple pleasures: gentle walks around the block, treats, and outings. We think he would do well with respectful kids. In a world of doodles and retrievers, Kingley’s unique! destination, not a brief stopover. What makes this unique is that, here at SU, there’s a chance for Brown to really make a difference and build something historic, quite unlike Georgia, where the advantages, from facilities to rabid fan involvement, can make winning more of a chore than a joy. Look back at SU’s coaching history across the board, and regardless of who was athletic director, there was a tendency to rely on familiar faces with familiar ties, to not really venture outside the coloring lines and open some eyes. Perhaps Fran Brown is unable to meet this moment and make fools out of the SU powers-that-be that are putting their faith in him. Or maybe Brown arrives with national championship rings in tow, dazzling recruits and transfers alike, which translates into a transformation on the field and a sense that, even in a time and place where it’s not supposed to happen, Syracuse football can reclaim its national relevance. Either way, it’s worth a try. Phil Blackwell is sports editor at Eagle News. He can be reached at pblackwell@ eaglenewsonline.com.

there at different ages, morphing as the table moved. The interesting thing about this night time fantasy was that the guests at my table were a mixed bunch, there were people I loved, close friends, acquaintances and people who made my stomach clench, people who created havoc, who steered my life’s decisions in ways that I didn’t want. Beside my dearest friends with whom I shared the best moments of my life, were two gals who spent their high school lives trying to intimidate and bully me. I’m sure that phase passed them by as they matured, but they will always be who they were then to me. Lessons learned. There were men and women with whom I shared work life, whose competency and energies were unassailable, who shared those qualities with me, and there were those who drained life from the job, who made the job untenable. I wondered if the latter were only in my dream to get free food. These characters seemed to be able to be at the table no matter where I was or how long this fantasy table extended, like a physics statement about time and existence. If dreams tell us anything, this one was clear. Who I am and who I want, wanted to be, is at the very least because of the people in my life, those who lifted me up, those for whom I owe the memory of challenges, those who inspired, who taught me, who frightened me, who caused me great harm … each giving something that became me. And that table had room for more, at least it did last night. So, while I am awaiting the denouement of the various questions, mysteries of my life, I am prepared to say “Welcome to my table.” Maybe, some day in the near and dear future I can get my children and their children to join us for Sunday supper. I’ll cook anything they want. Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Department of Financial Services at 1-800-342-3736 or the Foreclosure Relief Hotline 1-800-269-0990 or visit the department's website at WWW.DFS.NY.GOV. REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU CHOOSE TO REMAIN IN YOUR HOME, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROPERTY AND PAY PROPERTY TAXES IN ACCORDANCE WITH STATE AND LOCAL LAW. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to "save" your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner's distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. § 1303 NOTICE NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home. lights across the streets, which were purchased last year with funds raised by the Rotary among local business and professional residents and presented to the village, were turned on and bedecked with holiday greens and even the parking meters were gift wrapped and tagged. The wreaths and garlands on the lights were made by the entire membership of the Garden Club with materials

supplied by the Rotary and the decorations were put in place by the volunteer firemen, who also strung the lights across the street. On Tuesday the Village Chief of Police Walter W. Cazenovia boys indoor track wins at Morse Kickoff Meet by Phil Blackwell

Whether it was the quality of its own roster or the quality of the competition it faced, the Cazenovia boys indoor track and field team conquered all of it during Thursday night’s Jack Morse Kickoff Meet at SRC Arena. Earning a total of 96 points, the Lakers went to the top spot ahead of two large-school powers, Baldwinsville (82.2) and Cicero-North Syracuse (81.2), not to mention Liver-

pool in fifth place. Cazenovia set the night’s tone by winning the 4x400 relay. Jaden Kaplan, Tristan Field-Bradley, Eliot Comeau and Judah Ossont went three minutes, 46.36 seconds, beating out the 3:47.21 from runner-up C-NS. Kaplan wasn’t done, going to the 600-meter run and, in 1:32.77, edging Oswego’s Daniel Dunn (1:33.14) for the top spot, with Field-Bradley getting third place in 1:34.48. And Connor Frisbie was vic-

torious in the triple jump, going 41 feet 2 3/4 inches to beat out the 40’10” from Baldwinsville’s Logan Zapf, with Judah Ossont seventh at 35’11 3/4”. Jake Woolbert finished third in the 1,600-meter run in a personal-best 4:56.04. The Lakers also won the team portion of the 300-meter dash, seeing Wyatt Scott finish third in 39.92 seconds and Field-Bradley fourth in 40.12. Scott added a fourthplace long jump of 19’ 1/2” as Braden Carnahan (18’7 1/4”)

was close behind. Ossont was second and Connor Frisbie third in the high jump, each clearing 5’8” as Comeau was fourth with 5’6”. Working together in the 4x800, Woolbert, Comeau, Caleb Gilmore and Owen Woodworth were third in 9:27.99. Ethan Burry got third place in the weight throw with a heave of 39’9 1/4”. Frisbie added a sixth-place time of 8.65 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles and Charles Wilcox cleared 8’6” in the pole

vault to beat out Gilmore’s 8 feet. Comeau, in 3:01.50, was just behind Gilmore (3:01.48) in the 1,000-meter run. Carnahan went 7.23 in the 55meter dash and Burry threw the shot put 34’ 3/4” ahead of David Tugaw’s 31’10 1/4”. A day earlier, in the first session of the Morse Kickoff Meet, Chittenango opened its season and saw the girls 4x400 relay team of Sophia DiGennaro, Laura Powers, Hannah Wagner and Ava McLean go 4:41.27, a close second to

Homer’s winning 4:40.96. Emily Judd joined McLean, Powers and DiGennaro for third place in the 4x800 relay in 11:31.81, while the boys Bears had Ethan Lavier, Gannon Catlin, Jacob Neupert and Manu Tipa take seventh in its 4x800 in 10:39.51. Sean Eiffe got to fourth place in the boys shot put for Chittenango, tossing it 38’11 1/2” as Owen Law was ninth (5’2”) in the high jump.

Cazenovia hockey starts 2-1, wins weekend tournament by Phil Blackwell Combining their forces once again, students from Cazenovia, Hamilton and Morrisville-Eaton are part of a single ice hockey team playing under the Lakers’ banner with most of its home games at the Morrisville State IcePlex. That’s not where the season got underway, though. The Lakers found itself at Onondaga Nation Arena facing Christian Brothers Academy/Jamesville-DeWitt on Thursday night and getting run over by a dominant Brothers attack in a 9-2 defeat. Jack Donlin, back for his senior season, earned one of Cazenovia’s goals, the other one going to Rhiley Montoya. Assists were credited to Jake Hightchew, Shamus Newcomb and Jack Penoyer. Busy all night, Ezra Stahlberg made 32 saves, but CBA/J-D had too much. Three different Brothers – Quinn Wimer, James Stanton and Grady

Shanley – each scored twice, with Logan Novak getting a goal and two assists. Gavin Dunford also had a pair of assists as Jack Dement and Ryan Hayden converted goals. Without time to rest, Cazenovia went north to the Lamante Nicholson Tournament at Ontario Bay and, with back-to-back shutouts, easily erased the troubles the first game had caused. First, the Lakers blanked Broome County 5-0 on Friday night, quickly taking charge with a pair of first-period goals, one each by Montoya and Finn Hagan. Then Cazenovia was kept quiet until the third period, when it pulled clear thanks to Montoya stepping up for his second and third goals of the night, completing a hat trick, not to mention a goal by Vinny DiNatale. Shamus Newcomb and Jack Casey each earned a pair of assists, with Hight-

Moving on to Saturday’s final against Ontario Bay, it turned into a showcase for Donlin, who quieted the

Boys basketball Lakers roar out to 2-0 start by Phil Blackwell

In recent years, it was quite clear that, among neighboring boys basketball programs at Cazenovia and Chittenango, power had swung entirely in the Bears’ direction. A long-awaited Section III Class B title in 2022 and a 20-3 run a season ago stopped by eventual state champion Westhill proved this point, but now the Lakers might be ready for its own big statement. At the very least, Cazenovia had a far better outcome to its season opener, routing Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 68-41 in the opening round of the Sherburne-Earlville Tournament. The Lakers went 9-12 a season ago, but bring back a strong core of players led by junior Ben Bianco, who averaged better than 18 points per game as a sophomore. Unlike many other teams on their opening nights, Cazenovia was sharp in every phase of the game right from the outset against VVS, hitting on outside shots and making stops on defense while building a 23-6 advantage. It was 45-20 by halftime, and the Lakers breezed from there, Bianco putting up 20 points but getting big-time help from two other returning players, Tanner Lawson and Izaak Gilbert, who each finished with 16 points. Bobby Livingston and Edmond Richardson added seven points apiece. A day later, Cazenovia faced

host Sherburne-Earlville in the championship game and made it back-to-back victories, battling past the Marauders 56-44. Steadily, the Lakers got away from S-E, eventually building a 47-32 advantage through three quarters before easing up a bit late. Bianco again led the way, his 24 points more than twice the total of any Marauders player. Lawson’s 12 points also topped the 11 points from S-E’s top scorer, Garrett Winton, as Richardson and Alex Kuper got seven points apiece. Earlier on Saturday, Chittenango fell to Bishop Ludden 6149 in the Peppino’s Invitaitonal at Christian Brothers Academy. Having seen two star seniors, Alex Moesch and Ty Kelly, graduate after helping their team go 43-5 the previous two years, the Bears only managed five points in the first quarter against the Gaelic Knights. Yet it was a 16-9 push through the second quarter that put Ludden in control, with the Bears unable to overcome a 23-14 halftime deficit as 6-foot-7 freshman center Liam Sheard led the Gaelic Knights with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan Moesch, the Bears’ leading returning scorer, led both sides with 21 points, but no other Chittenango player hit double figures as Jacob Cheek had nine points and Jacob Bell added six points.

Storm all by himself and carried the Lakers to a 6-0 victory and the tournament title. Held without a point the night before, Donlin roared back to form and burned Ontario Bay for four goals

by game’s end, helped by single tallies from Hightchew and Henry Miller, each their first in a Cazenovia uniform, as Stahlberg again had the shutout in the net. Cazenovia goes back on

the road for another set of back-to-back games late this week, visiting Watertown IHC on Thursday and going to Clinton a night later.

Caz wrestlers drop opener to Canastota by Phil Blackwell

Not until the last bout was the Cazenovia wrestling team’s 2023-24 season opener against Canastota decided. And it went against the Lakers, who led thanks to a trio of mat victories, yet could not hang on in a 29-27 defeat. They opened at 285 pounds, with three forfeits, two in Cazenovia’s favor. In the first contested bout at 124 pounds, Cullen Arnold managed to pin Anuaki Showalter late in the second period. Later in the match, Broden Enders got a third-period fall

over 152-pound opponent Mason Morris and Bryce Enders, at 160 pounds, edged Luken Gaiser in a tight 5-3 decision. At this point, Cazenovia led 27-11, but Canastota, needing to win the remaining three bouts with falls, did so, with Finn Tobin (170 pounds) and Jake Winchell (190 pounds) both pinned in the first period and Luther Dannon, in the 215-pound finale, pinned in 23 seconds by Canastota’s Kieran Timmerman. Chittenango made its season debut Saturday in CiceroNorth Syracuse’s Andersen Tournament, where it earned

42 points to finish 18 th in a 23team field. Edward Geer had the Bears’ best finish, at 152 pounds, pinning Falconer’s Patrick Braley in 96 seconds in the consolation bracket final for third place. He was the only Chittenango wrestler in the top six. After going to Saturday’s Morrisville-Eaton Duals (where it lost 51-24 to M-E and 54-17 to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill), Cazenovia goes to FabiusPompey to face the combined Southern Hills team before wrestling this weekend in the Phoenix Round Robin up in Oswego County.

Caz girls basketball falls in opener to Homer by Phil Blackwell

Coming off a 9-13 record of a season ago, the Cazenovia girls basketball team hoped to get to double-digit victories and maybe position itself well in a revamped Section III Class B ranks. Of course, the Lakers’ opening assignment last Wednesday was against a Class A opponent – Homer, who arrived at Buckley Gym and, by taking over late, prevailed by a score of 52-45. They would go back and forth most of the night, Cazenovia leading early and the Trojans answering it, but the Lakers ultimately inching it way to a 36-35 advantage with one period left. Led by Lauren Franco (18 points) and Anya Gofkowski (13 points), Homer outscored the Lakers 17-9 the rest of the way, in large part because no Cazenovia player equaled the production of Homer’s top two.

Still, it was a well-balanced Lakers attack, with Hayden Bubble and Ella Baker each getting 11 points ahead of the nine points from Jocelyn Szalach and seven points from Bess Johnson. A night later, Chittenango began its season against Skaneateles, and would produce a lot in the game’s latter stages, but only after the Lakers built an insurmountable first-half margin on the way to prevailing 54-42. The Bears trailed 38-11 at halftime, and only the great work of Abby Scheidelman, who had a game-high 20 points, made it tighter. Skaneateles spread it around with nine different scorers, none having more than Finn Pas’cal’s total of 14 points. Cazenovia is on the road this week for back-to-back games against Solvay and Syracuse Academy of Science, while Chittenango’s lone action is a Tuesday-night home opener against Jamesville-DeWitt.

The absolute of GIR in Golf You should know by now that every article I write is focused on one main objective; to provide information that hopefully you and I can use to improve our golf game. This one is “Absolute”! I read a recent article written by Adam Bazalgette that did make me start thinking “outside the box” for next season. His credentials and videos on You-Tube are impressive. Adam was voted Teacher of the year by the Southwest Florida PGA three times. He has also appeared as a guest on the Golf Channel several times as well as being Director of instruction for the David Ledbetter Academy for 14 years before starting his Scratch Golf Academy. The premise of his article is based on how the golfer who shoots a score of 90 on a regular basis can realistically, “shave 8 strokes off their handicap”. Adam tells all of his students that, “shooting lower scores is pretty simple…HIT MORE GREENS”. I hope his quote sounds familiar to you…it should. The example he used in his article was about the golfer who shoots around 90 on a regular basis. When you look at his chart, there is an “Absolute” correlation between the number of Greens in Regulation a golfer hits, with a score of 90. The 90 golfer will only hit 2-3 greens per round. This makes pars and birdies a rare occurrence. His “sermon” to all of his students challenges them to focus on what will happen if they, “hit just 4 more greens per round”. The result is startling. A score of 90 then becomes an 82. Although Adam admits, “it is much easier said than done”, he wants us to study the chart he prepared to make his point (see below). “AGAIN, WE’RE NOT TALKING MAGIC HERE. IT’S A STATISTICAL FACT THAT YOU CAN DROP YOUR SCORES BY AN AVERAGE OF 8 SHOTS BY HITTING JUST 4 MORE GREENS PER ROUND”…Adam Bazalgette

Perry Noun is the former executive director of the Northeastern NY PGA as well as a competitive amateur golfer and winner of the New York State Super Senior Amateur Championship. Perry Noun can be heard on “Tee Time With The Pronoun” on... News Radio 570 WSYR and 106.9FM.

Adam’s Chart… Greens in Regulation. Average Score 1 91-95 2 89-93 3 87-91 4 85-89 5 83-87 6 81-85 7 79-83 8 77-81 9 75-79 10 73-77 11 71-75 12 69-73 How many GIR do you currently hit per round? Does it match your score? How many GIR per round do you realistically expect to hit next season? Do you know what you have to do to increase your GIR’S? If you don’t, ask a CNY PGA Golf Professional or be prepared to spend many hours watching a lot of videos and reading a lot of books. It won’t be easy to hit 4 more greens in regulation but the rewards will make your efforts well worth your time and energy. Another Option… You might want to consider doing three simple things next year to improve your GIR statistics. You hopefully have already read about them in my previous articles, but have not used them yet… because of your ego. 1. Learn how far you hit each club. 2. Aim for the middle of the green. 3. Hit one more club. Isn’t it about time we left our egos in the garage?

According to Tugaw, one of the most significant changes in his profession over the past 20-plus years has been the role of technology in education. He specifically pointed to the use of Chromebooks in classrooms, which he noted presents both opportunities and challenges. “I pride myself in being ‘old school’ and will always favor books over screen time,” he said in the questionnaire. “That said, students having the internet at their fingertips can be a powerful educational tool.” When asked in the questionnaire about his legacy, Tugaw responded that he hopes he is remembered as a firm but fair teacher. “I find myself often saying, ‘Have fun, but get it done,’” he added. He also expressed that he hopes his love of teaching shined through in class every day. “Mark has an outstanding ability to form positive and meaningful relation-

Additionally, his commitment to building a sense of community within the 7th-grade cohort has had a profound influence, fostering a team-oriented atmosphere that enhances the overall educational experience for students.” Tugaw has been coaching Varsity Boys Outdoor Track and Field since 2008 and Varsity Boys Indoor Track and Field since 2022. He also coached modified football from 2002 to 2013. He described coaching as a wonderful extension of the classroom, remarking that he has enjoyed seeing the young men on his teams grow from adolescents into young adults, and he feels privileged to have worked with some special athletes and fine young men throughout the years. continue to have a rewarding career, have worked with the best of the best, and have been fortunate enough to help a few kids along the way. . . . I’d like to give special thanks to Walt Stroud, Jean Regan, Amy Conley, Pat Mouton, Dick Lombardo, and my parents for helping to guide me throughout my career and for their unwavering support.” Tugaw was presented his award during CCSD’s first staff development day in September. He was accompanied by family and friends who wore matching shirts that were custom-made by Conley’s daughter Mary Kate. He said receiving the award was “completely surreal and totally unexpected.” “I was honored to be nominated and was thrilled that my family and loved ones joined me on stage,” he added. “Honestly, it was pretty emotional, and I found myself at a rare loss for words.” To learn more about CCSD, visit cazenoviacsd.com.
