Young entrepreneur opens CNY’s first gel blaster arena

R
ecently, a new indoor adventure was unveiled at Destiny USA, and the imagination behind it may surprise you. Joining a host of other attractions at Destiny is Central New York’s first indoor gel blast arena, Blast CNY. Jimmy Ginsburg, 11, of Cicero is the young visionary behind the actionpacked concept. His motivation his mother Nicole Ginsburg said, is making memories. Jimmy and his family are always thinking outside of the box when making their own memories. “We have always been fortunate to travel,” Nicole said. “We were always on the hunt for places to try something new or experience history, science, or the arts.” Nicole said that having the ability to spend time together doing something fun, like Blast CNY, to make memories is a powerful motivation. “Everyone deserves to smile, laugh, and experience true joy,” she said. “There is nothing more precious than time.” At the age of nine, Jimmy developed the creative idea while attending the

The IAAPA is a trade organization that represents the diverse and everchanging attractions industry, at least in part this experience helped inspire Jimmy’s vision for Blast CNY. But, the conference isn’t Jimmy’s only inspiration. Jimmy only had to look to his own family to see the creative and entrepreneurial spirit at work. Nicole is the creator and producer of live events locally and nationally. Her endeavors range from trendy pop-up experiences, immersive theater productions, holiday attractions, live stage shows to interactive entertain-
ment concepts. Nicole is the creative mind behind projects like the Museum of Intrigue, Intrigue Experiences, Escape The Estate, Painting with a Twist DeWitt, and the renowned Frightmare Farms Haunted SCREAM Park. All of these influences coalesced and inspired Jimmy to pursue a business opportunity to utilize gel blast in the same manner as foam darts, laser tag and paintball. With the help of his twin brother, Owen, and father, Jeremy Ginsburg, they got to work creating a safe space for kids to enjoy themselves. Jeremy assisted in the physical space design and layout. Owen helped with the “game” and scenarios.
The young entrepreneur and his family stay involved in the experience with Jeremy in charge of daily operations and Jimmy and Owen helping wherever they can as their academic schedules allow. Blast CNY introduces a unique blend of adventure, strategy, and physical activity. It is located on the second floor of Destiny USA in the Canyon Area. Players can participate in thrilling scenarios such as capture the flag, free-forall, sudden death matches, and several portal games that players complete for points. Paro, a Republican, soundly defeated Conservative Party nominee Stella Penizotto in the Nov. 7 election by a vote of 3,047 to 2,259. After making her first try for public office, Penizotto – who operates a successful day-care center – found encouraging signs amid her loss. “The fact that Salina only has like 100 registered Conservatives, yet I got 2,200 people to vote for me on that line is a big accomplishment,” she said. Paro still maintains that Penizotto waged a negative campaign against him. “This campaign year has been one of great personal loss for my family, and it has been exacerbated by an oppositional campaign marked by hostility and negativity,” Paro said. Penizotto disagrees. “My campaign was always factual and Nick knows it,” she said. “The truth about everything he has done to people and this town will come out soon enough.” For his part, Paro is proud to win a second term as supervisor. “We pushed back against fallacious attacks,” he said, “and we stayed focused on what is and always will be the most important thing in every campaign – the people I represent.”

In its Nov. 15 edition the Star-Review reported that Salina Town Supervisor Nick Paro was being sued by his former father-in-law. In fact, it is the other way around. On Oct. 25 in state Supreme Court, Paro filed the legal action charging his ex-father-in-law with defamation.
At its Nov. 20 meeting, the Village of Liverpool Board of Trustees approved the hiring of a public safety solutions company to supplement the administrative efforts of Liverpool Police Chief Jerry Unger and Sgt. Dave Sturtz. The board – Mayor Stacy Finney and trustees Melissa Cassidy, Rachel Ciotti, Mike LaMontagne and Matt Devendorf – voted unanimously to hire a firm named Lexipol to oversee the Liverpool Police Department’s applications for NY state accreditation while assuring that the department remains in compliance with state-mandated standards. The trustees agreed to pay Lexipol $29,772 for the first year, followed by an annual payment of $10,700. In addition to its accreditation and policy services, Lexipol’s Cordico wellness plan provides a confidential program which supports the physical and mental health of law enforcement personnel and their families. Headquartered in Frisco, Texas, Lexipol provides state-specific policies, accreditation support, online training, mobile wellness
enforcement and local government agencies. Lexipol serves more than 4,500 agencies nationwide, representing more than 300,000 employees

For more than a year, the Liverpool Police Department has been critically under-staffed. So when Joseph Ottaviano was sworn in as a full-time LPD officer at the opening of the village board meeting, his appearance was warmly welcomed by the trustees and by Unger. After Finney conducted the ceremony, Cassidy looked Ottaviano in the eye and exclaimed, “Welcome to Liverpool, officer!” Ottaviano relocated to Central New York after serving five years with the NYPD. He will complete his field training here in mid-December when he will be able to cover shifts for the LPD. Another applicant, Morgan Baumler, has also been hired by Unger, and is currently finishing his phase 2 training with the Camillus Police Department, set to be completed Dec. 5. After phase 2, Baumler will begin field training that

Farm to School
Liverpool CSD participate in harvest of the month collaborative Several school districts in Onondaga County, including the Liverpool Central School District, recently received a grant that allows their food service departments to purchase fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables directly from New York state and, specifically, Onondaga County. On the third Wednesday of every month, Liverpool and other participating school districts will offer a Farm to School menu featuring produce from local and New York state farms. September featured fresh corn on the cob, while October featured grapes and red potatoes. Upcoming produce items include cabbage, white potatoes, winter squash, apple slices and fresh strawberries. “The goal is to keep money local, help our area farmers, and expose our students to fresh and unprocessed or minimally processed fruit and vegetables,” said LCSD Director of Food Service Annette Marchbanks. “In the future, we would like to expand to include meats and grain items from our local farms.” Submitted photos
Cicero resident receives LHS senior named scholarship semifinalist FASNY scholarship The Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has awarded the 2023 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Ellysia Germain of Cicero. Germain received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for her volunteer service in the community from Mike Caron, member of the FASNY Board of Directors. “This scholarship means so much to me,” said Germain. “It feels amazing to be recognized in such a high manner for doing something I love and by a fire organization such as FASNY.” Germain has always had a passion for the fire service. Germain plans to attend Onondaga Community College in the fall, where she intends to study fire protection technology. Outside of the firehouse, she is often found on the soccer field. Germain plans to continue playing soccer at the collegiate level at OCC. Germain is one of 25 students chosen for this scholarship. “Volunteering at the Cicero Fire Department has changed my life,” said Germain. “It gave me a sense of fulfillment knowing that this is what I truly wanted and was meant to do. ‘Drawing on Talent’ at Baltimore Woods Submitted by Karen Jean Smith Gallery Coordinator It has been said that being in nature will bring out the best in people. In the case of the current art exhibit at Baltimore Woods Nature Center, artists have been inspired to create a variety of work, all related to nature in Upstate New York. Now through Dec. 21, the Fifteenth Annual Members’ Exhibit will be on display in the Art Gallery of the John A. Weeks Interpretive Center at 4007 Bishop Hill Road. An opening reception for this show washeld on Nov. 4. The exhibit may also be seen when the Interpretive Center is open on Saturdays from 10 to 4 p.m. and Monday through Friday from 9 to 4 p.m. There are no admission or parking fees, and all of the artwork is for sale. “Drawing on Talent” is a “some-
thing for everyone” exhibit. Subject matter includes water, sky, and forest, as well as animals and flowers, each individually interpreted. There is also a wide breadth of media: ceramic; oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel painting; ink and colored pencil drawing; weaving, prints, and photography. Visitors will recognize beautiful Central New York venues: Nine Mile Creek, The Point in Skaneateles, Beaver Lake Nature Center, Heiberg Forest, Pleasant Valley, and Tinker Falls This year, the show also has several images depicting various aspects of Baltimore Woods Nature Center. ’Tis the season Winter our voice

Winter is an inevitable factor of life in Central New York. As of this writing projections of what this winter might look like have been all over the place as meteorologists try to anticipate a variety of factors including El Nino conditions. The most recent forecast seems to indicate our area will see more snow than it has in recent years but temperatures may remain higher than normal. But as we all know winter in Central New York can be anything but predictable. While we are mostly spared the more intense snowfalls that hit communities to the west and north of our region, sooner or later it is likely we will have to deal with our fair share snowfall. What the weeks and months to come until spring is here again will bring is anyone’s guess. There are memes and old clichés that say in Central New York we can experience all four seasons in the matter of a single day, and there are times when that is not so far off the mark. But no matter what the weather brings, snow is likely to be a factor one way or the other, heavy or light, throughout the coming months. This affects or daily activities from the morning and evening commute to going to the store for groceries. And it is a factor we all have to take into consideration for our own safety and the safety of others when we are out on the road, whether it is commuting 20 plus miles a day or 10 minutes down the road. AAA recommends taking some common sense measures to ensure safety for yourself and others on the road. Do not tailgate. Normal following distances of three to four seconds on dry pavement should be extended to a minimum of five to six seconds when driving on slippery surfaces. The extra time will provide additional braking room should a sudden stop become necessary. Never use cruise control on slippery roads. If your vehicle hydroplanes or skids, you will lose the ability to regain some traction simply by lifting off the accelerator. It will be harder to recover from the loss of traction if cruise control is active. Slow down and adjust your speed to the road conditions. Leave yourself ample room to stop. Accelerate, turn and brake as gradually and smoothly as you can. Don’t slam on the brakes. If your car begins to skid, continue to steer in the direction you want the car to go. Slamming on the brakes will only make your vehicle harder to control. Use extreme caution on bridges and overpasses. Black ice typically forms first in shaded areas of the roadway and on bridges and overpasses that freeze first and melt last. Although the road leading up to a bridge may be fine, the bridge itself could be a sheet of ice. React quickly. Watch the traffic ahead and slow down immediately at the sight of brake lights, skidding cars or emergency flashers. AAA also recommends taking the time to be mindful of the condition of your vehicle. Cold weather can affect batteries, leading to a drain of power. It is also vital to make sure the ignition and heating systems are working correctly. Properly clearing snow from the vehicle before driving and having adequate wiper fluid to keep the windshield clear are also highly recommended. Even considerations such as clothing should be taken into consideration. AAA recommends wearing comfortable clothing. While heavy coats and gloves are good when outside, once a vehicle heats up, these items may be too restrictive and inhibit movement. Having a free range of motion becomes even more important when needing to drive safely in bad weather according to AAA. Probing my lifelong passion for potato chips
T
hanks to Grandma Utz, these days I’m feeling pretty chipper! Let me explain. For my entire life, my favorite snack food has been potato chips. Crunchy and salty. Plain or served with French onion dip. Delicious to the last finger-lickin’ bite. When I was a kid in the sixties, I’d devour bags and bags of Schuler’s Potato Chips while reading my Hardy Boys mystery novels or watching TV. I’d wash down the starch with a crisp cold Coca Cola or a bubbly 7-Up. As many of you know, my dad and his brothers owned a bar-and-grill down on First Street from 1946 to 1973. There they served Schuler’s chips at the bar, and naturally us kids would gladly gobble up the overflow chips inventory. And I became a big fan of that Rochester brand. Turns out that the Schuler Pretzel & Potato Chip Company was established in 1932 in Rochester. The Schulers had acquired a 4,500-acre woodlot there before World War II. Originally from Steuben County, Andrew Schuler made his fortune as a potato chip pioneer. His business was eventually sold to Wise Potato Chips. Sometime in the mid-1960s, my mom hired Baltimore-based Charles Chips to home deliver its saltiness in those distinctive tin cans, 12-inches tall, maybe 10 inches in diameter. Each tin held a full pound of product. Unfortunately, the tins were more distinctive than the chips. But the delivery was pretty darn convenient.
Terrell’s varieties
During my teenage years I tried another brand, one made in nearby Syracuse. Nowadays, Terrell’s – located at 218 Midler Park Drive – is the last remaining independent potato chip manufacturer left in the Empire State. I found these chips super-fresh but over-salted, nevertheless I embraced them because they were local. The family-owned business near DeWitt, has been cooking chips since 1946. Over the years Terrell’s wisely partnered with popular local restaurants such as the Dinosaur BarB-Que and Tully’s, to manufacture specialty chip varieties. When I worked by first journalism job at The Palladium-Times in Oswego in the mid-1970s, I dis-

up their giving trees, inviting the congregations to share the ‘stuff ’ of the season with those who are in need. Mailboxes are full of requests for support for good causes and social media extols the value of similar appeals. The volunteers who help staff our local hospitals, food pantries, soup kitchens and such are year around examples of the Christmas spirit. Of particular note, from my point of view, are the many animal rescues that depend on our generosity for their existence. Spay and Neuter Syracuse, Friends Forever, Helping Hounds, the ASPCA, Wanderer’s Rest, etc. are worthy of your consideration. I can complain about the commercialism of the season, while understanding that the very meaning that I treasure is not exclusive to the end of the year. Legos and gaming are fun! A giant screen TV is a luxury, but the true meaning of Christmas, the belief in the gift of self and all that entails, is still alive and well and lives in many places, in many hearts. covered Groff ’s Potato Chips, advertised as “fresh off the farm.” Groff ’s was established in 1947 in Bowmansville, Pa. and ceased operation in the mid1990s. Like Charles, Groff ’s sometimes packaged its chips in tins, but I just bought the big bags.

I truly appreciated Groff ’s and I expressed it personally by a corresponding with the company by mail (this was decades before the advent of email). Finally I figured out why I so cherished this particular chip: Groff ’s chips were cooked in lard! Which brings me to the present, when my favorite chips are Grandma Utz Kettle-Style Potato Chips. Based in Hanover, Pa., Utz manufactures a wide variety of chips and other snacks. The company’s website boasts about Grandma’s chips: “The taste of our Grandma Utz Kettle-Style Potato Chips harkens back to the original flavors of our Pennsylvania Dutch tradition! Just like Grandma used to make.” Now Utz regular potato chips are cooked in cottonseed oil, and its Kettle Classic line in peanut oil. But get this: its Grandma Utz varieties are cooked in lard! Just as Groff ’s so pleased me, Grandma’s makes its mark with that semi-solid white lard rendered from simple pig fat. A 70-year-old British novelist named Geoff Nicholson calls himself a psychogourmet, so he knows something about lard-made chips. At his website, psycho-gourmet.blogspot.com/, Nicholson writes, “The basic news about lard-cooked potato chips is that they’re all good. The flavor of the potato really comes through, and also – and I know not everyone is going to buy this idea – the taste of the lard comes through too, and it tastes good. The end result is a strangely, unexpectedly light and delicate flavor.” Amen!

Thanks to Lysander voters
To the editor: I would like to take the time to thank everyone who voted in the local races in the Town of Lysander. I have a lot of work to do over the next four years for Lysander, and I appreciate the opportunity given to me from the citizens of Lysander. I will be open, accessible, and approachable to the citizens of Lysander. The next few years can be the beginning of a growth not seen in years for Onondaga County and Lysander, but it needs to be done with the input of the citizens who live here and careful thought. I would also like to take this opportunity to ask our citizens if they would like to assist the town board and myself with the various committees that help our town government make decisions that shape our future. There will also be an open town board seat that I will be vacating when I take my new role as town supervisor. I asked our current town board if we could advertise for the open seat in a non-partisan way, but unfortunately our current Town Supervisor Wicks, Councilors Moore and Geraci do not want to break with the tradition of political committees putting names forward to the town board for consideration. A majority of the town board will appoint the open seat, not a political committee. I know I am tired of political gamesmanship that occurs, and I also feel after this election that many in Lysander believe something is broke and it needs to be fixed. I promise to the citizens of Lysander that I will not play these games, and I am here to do the work of the town, not some political party agenda. A ridiculous proposal
To the editor: So, the West Genesee Central School District (WGCSD) wants to buy a golf course. By the merits of the idea, certainly sounds ridiculous. Well, it is. This coming from a parent of former WGHS students who sees daily nearly empty school buses riding around Camillus. School districts should not be in the land-grab business. This proposal is for the purchase of over 118 acres of land of the former Westvale Golf Club. This to purchase it. The proposal for land purchase only. It will take years and even more taxpayer dollars to size up, excavate, test the grounds for toxins and demolish or renovate current buildings before any new construction will start. And that new construction will require another proposal and even more taxpayer funding. Years and years of this. This from a school a district that has seen enrollment drop for years. While enrollment is dropping, the school district in its infinite wisdom has hired on more VPs and administrators. While listing officially 30, I am told by current and retired WG teachers and coaches that the number is much higher. One of the areas that the WGCS District proposed facility improvements will address is to “ensure a safe learning environment for all students and occupants.” How does buying a golf course do that? In the meantime, WGHS is certainly not currently offering a safe learning environment for its students now as recent incidents can attest. WG taxpayers should not be fooled by these two proposals. The bleeding of taxpayers has to stop and the Administrators of the WGCSD need to come to grips that every time they ram proposals to vote, that we will say “no” to frivolous spending Rudolph S. Passing 25, with eternal gratitude
Late in November, back in the previous century and milRandom lennium, a callow young man just 18 months removed from Thoughts his college days settled into a Phil Blackwell new job at Eagle Newspapers where the only responsibility was to work and write – in both cases, a lot. Now, as another November turns into another December, the days are short, the nights long and the temperature rarely raising above the freezing mark, that same man, no longer young and far more calloused, still has that job. Twenty-five years have passed. Just writing those four words stirs deep, profound emotions. First, the sheer length of time, which was never the original plan but has turned into my life’s work. Second, all the places I have gone, all the games covered, in everything from subzero chill to blazing heat, witnessing the full spectrum of life’s emotions, from ecstasy to despair, giddy smiles and bitter tears. Life has brought a lot, too, from initial loneliness to marriage and family life and increased responsibilities that can certainly overwhelm me but never break my spirit. So many colleagues, and more than a few friends, have entered and exited my rather closed circle, each of them leaving unique marks through their words and their examples. To them, and to so many others, I owe so much. Others would use this space, and this opportunity, to recall famous names they covered or met, try to impress you by their brushes with fame, or point out the famous moments along the way. All that is nice, but familiar. Gratitude need not involve self-glorification, especially if that glory was earned by others and your only real role was to witness it and, perhaps, write something about it that people remember. It all comes back to an existential question which has always accompanied my journey. Why do this, when more attention, perhaps more recognition, certainly more of a fortune, may have existed elsewhere? As always, the answer lies not in a few clever phrases, but in the hearts and souls of every single player, coach and fan I have encountered from my young adulthood to well into middle age. HOPE for Bereaved names new executive director Kelly Ocampo begins her new role on Monday, Oct. 2 Kelly Ocampo is the new Executive Director at HOPE for Bereaved. Ocampo has almost two decades of experience in the non-profit sector with a focus on program development and grant writing. “When our long-time founder Terese Schoeneck retired there was much concern on our board as to whether we could find a person worthy of the role,” said Hope for Bereaved Board of Directors Member Rodger Loomis. “I believe Kelly has the experience, maturity, and seriousness of purpose required to take this great organization to the level necessary to ensure its continued mission for another 40 years.” Hope for Bereaved Board of Directors President Steve Schoeneck also expressed his support of Ocampo as executive director. “Kelly has all the skills to excel as the executive director, but specifically she has the desire and drive to ensure Hope is here serving the community for many years to come,” Schoeneck said. “We all look forward to working with Kelly to serve the bereaved wherever they are.” Ocampo said she connects with HOPE’s mission. “Forty-five years ago, Therese Schoeneck turned a personal tragedy into

HOPE for Bereaved is dedicated to helping grieving children, teens and adults by providing core services (support groups, monthly newsletter and counseling) at no charge. Founded in 1978, HOPE is an independent nonprofit community organization. Our purpose is to offer support, understanding, coping strategies, friendship, and hope to the bereaved, as well as education, consultation and resources for their families, friends, employers, school/daycare staff, co-workers and invested professionals. The help given by HOPE can add greatly to the physical and mental well-being of the bereaved and therefore to their place of employment and to the community.

Kids Against Hunger: Student Athletic Oneida Indian Nation honors local veterans at annual event More than 400 local veterans were honored for Council packages meals for Haiti their service Nov. 1 at the The Skaneateles Student Athletic Council earlier this year packed more than 70,000 meals with Kids Against Hunger at Grace Chapel. The 25 students and faculty members made 73,674 meals, which are destined for Haiti. Members of the SAC were able to see the process from start to finish, and helped pack food items onto pallets and then onto the truck. Kids Against Hunger is a non-profit humanitarian organization with the mission to provide to impoverished children and families around the world. The SAC’s purpose is to engender and sustain school pride/spirit with acts of philanthropy, improve/beautify our athletic facilities, and promote a vision of the future for

In the days before Thanksgiving, each of the Cicero-North Syracuse bowling teams would get their 2023-24 seasons underway and find a modest amount of success. The girls Northstars went first, facing Homer in the first contest of the entire Section III winter sports season last Monday afternoon at Strike-N-Spare Lanes and prevailing 5-2 over the Trojans. Trinity Short led C-NS, her games of 174, 160 and 170 producing a 504 series as Jennifer Draper added a three-game total of 468 with a 168 high game. Samantha Arnold had a top game of 138, with Ava Agostoni recording a 131
game and Delanie Lombardo a 129 game. To lead Homer, Olivia Hamilton had a 440 series and high game of 180. A day later, both C-NS sides competed against Rome Free Academy, and the boys Northstars prevailed 7-4 led by Jacob Calabria, whose superb 280 game was part of a 666 series that also included games of 196 and 190. Garett Arnold posted a 237 and 210 during his 641 series, while Derek Tarquino had games of 221, 208 and 205 in his 634 set as Nehehmiah Bachman finished with a 235 after a 191 and 194 to get a threegame total of 620. In golf…We learn from our mistakes About 5 years after I become a competitive golfer, I realized that, “Success in golf is directly related to what we do, after we botch, bungle, flub, muddle, blunder or spoil a golf shot”. I have both experienced and observed elite as well as high handicap golfers and have concluded that everyone has their own way of responding to the mistakes and those who learn what to do about them, have the best opportunity to succeed. Sort of like the game of life. Do you know the biggest differences between high handicap amateur players, and elite amateurs? If you don’t, you should, because it is absolutely the most effective way to become a better golfer. Whether your goal is to break 100, 90 or 80 next year, the following questions will identify the weaknesses in your golf game. Please take the following quiz I prepared for you to determine how far you are from reaching your goals next year. You just might find out you are not as far away as you think. 1. How many times during a round of golf do you get angry after making a bad shot? Never? Seldom? Sometimes? Often? 2. During a round of golf, how many times, after hitting a bad shot, have you said to yourself…play for a bogey? Never? Seldom? Sometimes? Often? 3. How many times during a round do you “not” take enough club on your approach shot to the green? Never? Seldom? Sometimes? Often? 4. During a round, how many times do you “overthink” and “overstudy” all shots, but especially when reading your putts? Never? Seldom? Sometimes? Often? 5. When you make a bad shot during a round, do you know why you missed it? Never? Seldom? Sometimes? Often? 6. When you make a good shot, do you know why you hit it well? Never? Seldom? Sometimes? Often? I believe you can figure out the best answer to each question above on your

own. The point of the quiz is to make you aware that breaking “80” does not require, “major technical shifts” as Golf Magazine says, “but instead, eliminating the simple mistakes”. I’m not sure it’s quite as “simple” as Golf Magazine says it is, but certainly focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of your game will be helpful to understand “where” your bad shots are going and “why” they are going there. “You will never be able to eliminate your ‘miss‘ but your attitude after your ’miss’ will determine the type of golfer you become. Eliminate your mistakes next year and decide what kind of golfer you want to be… * Breaking 100 should be the goal of every beginner golfer. * Breaking 90 should be the goal of every recreational golfer who plays at least 2-4 times a month. * Breaking 80 should be the goal of every amateur golfer who plays in a golf league every week and in 3-4 tournaments a year. * Breaking 80 “consistently”, should be the goal of every amateur golfer who seeks to establish himself/herself in the Top 3% of golfers in the country. * Breaking 75 consistently as an amateur is not easy, but when you do, you will have achieved the “Holy Grail” of golf. Congratulations! “Golf is not about waiting for the storm to pass…it’s about learning how to dance in the rain”. When Vivian Greene wrote this quote, the word “Life” started the sentence. I decided to use the word “Golf” because it is just as appropriate, isn’t it?

Liverpool runners compete at state Federation meet by Phil Blackwell
The fall sports season for Liverpool High School concluded with two cross country teams and two divers both taking part in high-profile events on the weekend of Nov. 17-18. In the case of the cross country Warriors, it meant going to Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls for the annual New York State Federation championships, where the boys finished 13th out of 31 teams and the girls were 16th in a 30-team field. Brady Ruediger had the best individual finish for the Liverpool boys. The senior went 16 minutes, 51.1 seconds on the Bowdoin Park course to finish 29th overall and 19th among team runners. Josh Vang was the closest Warriors pursuer, his 17:28.9 good for 47th place on the team side. Nate Aurello was 67th among team runners in 17:47.4, with Roman Murray posting 18:19 flat as Davis Farrell, in 18:26.9, was ahead of an 18:46.8 from Brady Petrella and 19:30.3 from J.T. Goss. The Liverpool girls did not have Taylor Page, a top-20 finisher in the Nov. 11 NYSPSHAA meet at VernonVerona-Sherrill, on hand, but still had

Closest to her among Warriors runners was Charlotte Warner, who posted 21:11.4. Kailyn Barth finished in 21:49.6, ahead of a 22:10 from Rose Piorkowski, a 22:20 from Paige Baker and 22:41.4 from Addison Ziegler. Saratoga Springs was the girls team champions, while Monroe-Woodbury took top honors on the boys side as Auburn finished third, getting an eighthplace individual finish from Ryan Maher in 16:25.7 as the Maroons’ Mary Alice Pineau led local runners on the girls side, finishing 12th in 19:08.4. Then there was the New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls swim meet at Webster Aquatic Center near Rochester, where Liverpool divers June Pioroeski and Molly Murphy both took part. In the Nov. 17 preliminary round, Pioroeski was 24th with 197.50 points and Murphy 32nd with 165.25 points. Neither made it to the final round, where Jamesville-DeWitt’s Kayla McQuaid (14th) had the best Section III finish.

The event provided local students the opportunity to interact with members of the construction industry and learn more about the numerous job opportunities available for those interested in a construction career after high school. The Syracuse Builders Exchange sponsored the event, held at the Regional Market. More than 500 high school students from across CNY attended this year’s Construction Career Day.
