Town considers funding options for Local Scouts BSA troop supports the community through boat washing station By kate Hill Staff Writer

In advance of the holiday season, Cazenovia’s Scouts BSA Troop 18 is serving the community through its annual Scouting for Food project. On Oct. 28, the Scouts left plastic and paper bags at local homes, encouraging residents to fill the bags with non-perishable food items. The bags were picked up a week later, sorted, and donated to CazCares food pantry and clothing closet and The Mustard Seed in Georgetown. “Food banks across Central New York are reporting record demands for food assistance, and our Scouts are answering the call,” said Ramona Persaud, a member of the Troop 18 Scouting for Food Committee. The troop collected 2,381 food items, including canned fruit, vegetables, and meats, as well as pasta, baby food, and peanut butter. According to Persaud, about 10 percent went to the Mustard Seed; the bulk went to CazCares. Scouting for Food is an ongoing annual program of the BSA that was started in 1985 by the Greater Saint Louis Area

Troop 18 has been organizing the project for over two decades. “It engages Scouts to implement the Scout slogan of ‘Do a good turn daily,’” said Persaud. “Through the Scout Oath, Scouts commit to ‘help people at all times.’ Scouting for Food is one way the Scouts of Troop 18 fulfill that com-

mitment and help their community. More importantly, it helps our youth develop an understanding of the needs of others. The Scouts experience the generosity of others and the impact of teamwork for the benefit of our community.” Troop 18 is a linked troop that includes both boys and girls. The troop, which is led by scoutmasters Colleen Combs and

Donald Arnold, currently has 16 boys and 12 girls ages 11-17. The Scouts meet on Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lewis Loyster Memorial Lodge, 8 Riverside Dr., Cazenovia. “Our troop camps yearround, and yes, even in the winter,” said Persaud. On Nov. 6, the Cazenovia Town Board authorized the town supervisor to execute and process an application for a $20,000 New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) grant to assist with the purchase of a boat washing station for Cazenovia Lake. According to the resolution adopted by the board, the town has an intermunicipal agreement with the Village of Cazenovia to assist with the costs associated with the Lakeside Park boat launch. The agreement calls for the enforcement of regulations pertaining to the lake, such as the visual inspection of boats before they are launched into the lake. The resolution explains that the Cazenovia Lake Watershed Council is increasingly concerned about the potential inadvertent introduction of new invasive species into the lake when boats are launched. “The Council is confi-

dent a boat washing station would be an enhancement to the current program,” the resolution states. The DEC grant program is known as the “2023 Aquatic Invasive Species Watercraft Spread Prevention - Stewards - Boat Decontamination Program.” During his report, Supervisor Bill Zupan announced that the town was informed verbally that it has been awarded a $500,000 State and Municipal Facilities Program (SAM) grant through Assemblyman Al Stirpe’s office. A portion of the funds will be used for capital costs at the Mt. Pleasant Water District for additional water storage and system upgrades. Another portion will be used for an influent screening system and a small building at the water pollution control facility. The remainder may be used to purchase a boat washing station if the town is not awarded the DEC grant for that project. “We broke it [down] to $180,000 for Mt. Pleasant, $300,000 for the wastewater pollution control facility, and $20,000 for a boat washing station,” said Zupan. The supervisor exTown l Page 2

Uncertified results of Cazenovia, Nelson, and Fenner elections announced By kate hill Staff writer

On Nov. 7, residents of the Towns of Cazenovia, Nelson, and Fenner went to the polls to cast their votes in their local 2023 general elections. After the polls closed, the Madison County Board of Elections posted the general election uncertified results on its website. The vote totals reported online are as of Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 12:33 a.m. On Nov. 10, Madison County Democratic Commissioner Laura Martino said there were still absentee and affidavit ballots that have not been counted in Cazenovia and Nelson. “We may receive mail-in ballots from overseas up until Nov 20, as long as they are postmarked on or before election day,” she said. “All results are unofficial at this time; final certification is due to the state on or before Dec.2. We expect to certify before then.”

Uncertified results Cazenovia

In Cazenovia, voters elected Town Councilor Kyle Reger (Republican) to the office of town supervisor. They also voted incumbent Town Councilor Jimmy Golub (Democratic, Strong Community) and Sheila Fallon (Republican) to the town board. The town supervisor and town councilors serve four-year terms. Reger, who ran unopposed, received 1,163 votes. “I am thrilled to have been elected as the town supervisor,” said Reger, who will also sit on the Madison County Board of Supervisors. “I am honored to serve the

community that I love and where I had the privilege to grow up. I am excited to work together for the betterment of Cazenovia.” Reger will take the reins from Bill Zupan (Democratic), who decided not to seek reelection after ten years as Cazenovia’s supervisor. Prior to holding the supervisor position, Zupan sat on the town board for several years and on the zoning board of appeals for over 20 years. “I put my time in, and I felt it was time to move on because I wanted to do some traveling,” Zupan said. “I felt that if I travel, I can’t give my all to the town or the county, so I made the decision not to run again. I think the town board will do [just] fine under Kyle’s leadership. I enjoyed my time as town supervisor. It kept me active [in the community], and hopefully people think I did a decent job.” Golub received 996 votes and Fallon received 950 to beat out the third candidate, Mark Braiman (Libertarian), who received 242 votes. “I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of the Town of Cazenovia,” said Fallon. “I thank Mark for his interest in the town and hope he remains vocal about the issues he feels are important. I congratulate Jimmy and look forward to working with him and the entire town board to preserve and enhance the quality of life in Cazenovia.” Golub extended his gratitude to Zupan for his decades of service to the town. “Bill is a wealth of knowledge, and although we didn’t always agree, we always respected each other’s point of view,” Golub said. “We take for granted how well-run Cazenovia is, with all its staff. I credit our supervisor for leading the way. I will lean on Bill when I have questions. I’m really looking forward to this new board. I’ve al-

ready spoken with councilor-elect Sheila Fallon and think she will be a great addition to our board. I also think Kyle Reger will do a masterful job picking up the reins from Supervisor Zupan. Kyle has excellent communication skills and work ethic, and he never ceases to impress me. I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve gotten to represent this town. I think this board has what it takes to [deal with] the challenges we will face over the next four years. Thank you, Cazenovia!” The Cazenovia Town Board typically meets on the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Gothic Cottage at 7 Albany St. For more information, visit towncazenovia.digitaltowpath.org.

Nelson

In Nelson, voters reelected Supervisor James J. Cunningham (Republican, Liberty) and Highway Superintendent Joseph E. Deyo Jr. (Republican, Liberty), who both ran unopposed and will serve twoyear terms. Cunningham received 425 votes and Deyo received 423 votes. Christine N. Jaquez (Liberty) ran unopposed for a four-year term as town clerk and received 308 votes. Based on the results reported as of press time, incumbent town councilors John E. Laubscher (Republican, Liberty) and John J. LaGorga (Liberty) secured their seats on the town board for another four-year term. Laubscher received 280 votes and LaGorga received 237, narrowly beating Virginia Kleinklaus (Democratic, Strong Community), who received 234, and Nancy Demyttenaere (Democratic, Strong Community), who received 231. “At this point, it is too close to call,” said LaGorga on Nov. 10. “I’m hoping to

serve another four years, but no matter the outcome, I appreciate the support and I will continue to be an active member of the Town of Nelson.” In the event that the outcome of the Nelson Town Board race has changed once the election results have been certified, the Cazenovia Republican will print a followup. Nelson Town Board meetings are typically held on the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the town office at 4085 Nelson Rd., Cazenovia. To learn more about the Nelson Town Board, visit townofnelson-ny.com.

Fenner

In Fenner, Town Supervisor Dave Jones, Town Clerk Lisa Dolan, Highway Superintendent Robbie Conklin, and Town Councilors William Wester and Adam Pushlar all ran unopposed as Republicans and were reelected. Jones received 185 votes, Dolan 190, Conklin 188, Wester 174, and Pushlar 186. The town supervisor, highway superintendent, and clerk positions are all twoyear terms. Town councilors serve fouryear terms. “Although it was an uncontested race, it is an honor to serve the town that I grew up in, raised our family in, and run our business in,” said Jones. “It has been humbling to serve as supervisor for the last 10 years. It is very enjoyable to work with an engaged town board and an excellent and hard-working town clerk and highway superintendent.” Fenner Town Board meetings are typically held on the second Wednesday of each month at 8 p.m. at 3151 Fenner East Rd., Cazenovia. plained that the town can only use one grant to purchase the boat washing station. “We don’t know if we are going to get the DEC grant,” he said. “We know we are going to get the Stirpe grant, but we are going to be waiting probably six to eight months before we get the letter, and we can’t use the money until we get the letter.” He added that it will be the board’s responsibility to make the final determination on how the SAM grant is broken up. “[If we get the DEC grant], we could move the $20,000 to either Mt. Pleasant or the water pollution control facility,” Zupan said. “. . . We are going to have to get more specific with the numbers later.” The DEC grant application was due on Nov. 1, but there is no telling when the awards will be announced, according to Zupan.

Town of Cazenovia Comprehensive Plan 2030

by Donna Newman photo provided by the CNYSPCA If Millie’s life was a movie, it would be “Back to the Future.” She came to the shelter as a puppy six years ago. She lived the happy life of a beloved dog until her owner passed away, and she found herself back at the shelter. Most of us know how hard it is to lose a pet, but when a pet loses an owner, they can also lose home, family, friends, and everything familiar. Millie has a lot of life to live and a lot of love to give. She’s optimistic and hopes that the next chapter of her life will be a good one. She would do best as the only pet. Silly Millie has cuddles to spare and would make a lovely companion to almost any family. For more information about adoption, call 315-454-4479, email frontdesk1@cnyspca.org, or visit cnyspca.org.

During his report, Councilor Kyle Reger updated the board on an Oct. 24 public outreach meeting on the Town of Cazenovia Comprehensive Plan 2030 update. The updating process was initiated in May 2023 by a committee of town residents with the assistance of land use planning consultants from Environmental Design & Research. The Town of Cazenovia Comprehensive Plan draft vision statement is as follows: “Preserve and enhance the unique characteristics of the Cazenovia community, which reflect a composition of distinctive natural, cultural, historic, and scenic resources. Encourage sustainable economic growth and climate action while maintaining an inviting and equitable atmosphere for all to experience Cazenovia’s historic village, magnificent lake, quaint hamlet, and productive agrarian landscape.” The plan is guided by the following themes: livable built environment, harmony with nature, resilient economy, healthy community, responsible region-

alism, and interwoven equity. During the public meeting, community members were invited to share ideas and feedback to guide the development of the goals and strategies in the plan, which is intended to provide a roadmap for the future of the Town of Cazenovia and to facilitate the day-to-day decisions of local officials and residents. The materials presented at the meeting are available at caztownplan2030.org. A community survey is also linked on the website for the public to provide further input. The survey, which must be completed by Dec. 1, 2023, aims to gather input from community members about overall values and the community’s changing needs for the future. The information will help inform the community-wide vision, goals, and strategies of the comprehensive plan. Reger announced that a card was mailed to every household in the town earlier that day with a QR code linked to the online survey. Questions about the survey or the comprehensive plan can be directed to caztownplan2030@gmail.com. “If anyone has any trouble, we will certainly make other accommodations, and you can reach out to me through the town office,” said Reger. The draft plan is expected to be completed by spring 2024. “It’s the vision of our town moving forward, so it’s really important that we get as much public input as possible,” Reger said. At the end of his report, Reger thanked Zupan for the considerable amount of time he has dedicated over the last several months to helping him prepare to take over the office of town supervisor. “Beyond just inviting me to [different] meetings, he has taken countless hours to meet with me and to answer endless phone calls,” Reger said. “Really, I think it speaks to his character. I will forever be grateful. . . . His council has been invaluable to me.” For more information on the Town of Cazenovia, visit towncazenovia.digitaltowpath.org or call the town office at 315-655-9213.

The Facility is a zero-emission wind energy facility that will assist the State in meeting the goals of the Climate Leadership and Protection Act and State Energy Plan, which includes obtaining 70% of energy generation from renewable sources by 2030 and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Other positive impacts of the Facility include the creation of full-time equivalent construction jobs; local spending on accommodations, dining, and other local services during the construction and installation period; payments to landowners; increased revenues to the Towns, County and School Districts; and bill credits paid directly to residential electric customers in the host municipality; and the generation of enough electricity to power approximately 17,968 homes annually, helping New York State to become energy independent. In addition, Hoffman Falls Wind has attempted to minimize impacts associated with the Project, for example, by limiting the disturbance to forested lands, wetlands and streams, and threatened and endangered species to the maximum extent practicable. Hoffman Falls Wind will submit an Application for a Siting Permit that includes extensive studies evaluating the potential impacts associated with the Facility and identified methods which have been agreed to be implemented to avoid, minimize, and mitigate potential impacts. No sooner than three days before the Application is filed, an additional notice will be published announcing the anticipated filing of the Application. This notice is being provided in accordance with 19 NYCRR 900-1.3(d) and is being published at least 60 days prior to the filing of the Application.

Honoring Gobble, gobble veterans our voice

On Nov. 11, we took time to honor those who served as we commemorated Veterans Day. This is a day that, according to the United State Department of Veterans Affairs, truly belongs to all veterans, no matter when or where they served or under what conditions, the day is dedicated to all of those who gave their time in service to their country. In many local communities, flags were flown and ceremonies were held where patriotic songs were sung and the names of those who served were commemorated. Some of these were formal community gatherings, while others were smaller, more intimate gatherings. Some brought many people together while other gatherings were focused on family and friends getting together to honor the veterans in their lives. But no matter what kind of gathering took place or what kind of celebration took place, the focus was on honoring those who served. This is a day that is also dedicated to learning about what it means to serve. Often over the years area schools have welcomed local veterans in the days ahead of Veterans Day, not only to honor them, but to listen to them and learn from them and their experiences and get a better sense of what it truly means to serve your country. The roots of Veterans Day go back to the end of World War I. It was on Nov. 11, 1918 at 11 a.m., the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, when the armistice with Germany went in to effect. A year later, President Woodrow Wilson reflected on the meaning of the first commemoration of Armistice Day. Wilson said the service of those who fought in the war and of those who gave their lives and those who came back home, helped bring peace and a more just world into being. “Out of this victory there arose new possibilities of political freedom and economic concert,” Wilson said in his address to the country. “The war showed us the strength of great nations acting together for high purposes, and the victory of arms foretells the enduring conquests which can be made in peace when nations act justly and in furtherance of the common interests of men. To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.” It was in 1926, at the urging of President Calvin Coolidge that congress adopted a resolution on June 4 to issue annual proclamations calling for the observance of Nov. 11 in honor of veterans. And a congressional act followed in May of 1938 which made Nov. 11 a legal holiday as a day dedicated to the cause of world peace that would be known officially as Armistice Day. It was in 1945, that the idea of Veterans Day as it has come to be known began to take shape. The idea started with World War II veterans who wanted to see the idea of Armistice Day extend to all veterans. A veteran named Raymond Weeks led the effort to make this change and in 1947 he led the first celebration of Veterans Day in Alabama and continued to do so the rest of his life. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation into law on May 26, 1954 extending Armistice Day to all veterans and in June of 1954 congress amended the bill to replace Armistice with Veterans. For a century since Woodrow Wilson first commemorated Armistice Day to now, more than 100 years later, it is important that we take this time to thank those who have served and reflect on what their service means to our country.

It’s smoked bird this year. Yeah! This year, as last, we will pack up the car with pies and sundries and head east to Cazenovia to feast on smoked turkey, which, waxing poetic, is the most succulent poultry in the universe. It will be accompanied by mashed potatoes, biscuits, whole cranberry sauce and assorted vegetables made from new and delicious recipes. I know this because I just got off the phone with my daughter, who is hosting the event. She is in charge of the “sides,” which, if our conversation holds true, will be a tour de force of their own. Jack, my son-in-law, is the smokemaster. He will put the final touches on the bird, which he will have brined the day before. There will be a good selection of music playing through his laptop computer as we sample some healthy hors d’oeurves and wine. The healthy part is a relatively new phenomenon associated with my child’s discovery of the same kind of stuff she made fun of as a teenager. The wheel turns. Can you see me smiling? And, speaking of wheels turning, I am remembering other Thanksgivings, some of childhood where the menu was turkey with Pepperidge Farm stuffing, mashed potatoes, peas, candied yams, which was my mother’s signature dish, sliced jellied cranberry sauce, rolls and home-made mincemeat pie. My grandmother would have made the mincemeat with the green tomatoes left at the end of the summer. We might have, if they were on sale, a Mrs. Smith’s pumpkin pie. My father loved Mrs. Smith’s pies but my mother would not buy a pie, a shameful thing, apparently, unless it was on sale. As the years went by and we followed our fortunes to other climes and my mother moved to Florida, we gathered at my sister’s house in Carmel, which was sort of centrally located for most of the family, for the holiday. It wasn’t really

centrally located for us, but since the rest of the family thinks of Marcellus as being near the Rocky Mountains, we were the ones to travel. This was the epoch of weird food, the nation having discovered the combination of canned yams and marshmallows as well as the famous green bean-mushroom soup casserole. We still had the jellied cranberry sauce and the candied yams to connect us to past holidays. We would call our mother on Thanksgiving, pretending to have forgotten how to make the yams, so that she could, once again, share the recipe. My sister also believed in homemade desserts and we feasted on several pies, some with fillings made of packaged faux whipped cream and more marshmallows. With other changes, we were left with Thanksgiving at our house from time to time. The “we” being my spouse and our children. I subscribed to the cloning of my childhood Thanksgiving meal with the racy addition of creamed tiny onions, which I believed made me a gourmet cook. I served this simple meal with my own variation of odd dessert pies that I seemed drawn to copy from women’s magazines that told me Thanksgiving demanded creativity. I think that there is at least one word that describes those pies and it isn’t creativity. You cook and learn. As years went by I added or subtracted from the meal depending on the number at the table. One year, when there were only three of us, I cooked a duck breast stuffed with prunes. It wasn’t the same. There were times when the several parts of our family did not share a Thanksgiving table. Scattered among friends and families connected by marriage, our children had other places to be. So, what did we do? I can tell you, the memory being so strong, that it was a tossup between football on TV or a movie at one of the movie plexes. Of course, I could

cook a traditional Thanksgiving meal, and I did consider that for about two minutes, but I sat down and that thought faded into the place where things like make-your-own shoes and do-it-yourself roofing lie. I remember that I made sandwiches out of deli turkey, cranberry sauce and stove top stuffing. Mrs. Smith came through with one of her smaller pumpkin pies. Eighteen years ago, my daughter offered to take the Thanksgiving scepter from my weakened hands because I was a bit bedraggled after my last chemo treatment. There were five minutes of recrimination on my part. What did this all mean? What did this say about me and my role on earth? I decided that I loved the idea and the meal she served was fabulous. This is a child who, mind you, when she left for college, was astounded to find out that you could make cake frosting from scratch. Things change. I did bring dessert, my favorite part of the meal anyway. No matter what we cook, no matter what we eat, no matter how many gather, this day that we celebrate with the turkey and fixings is really a celebration of family, the lovely thought that there are people in this world, some kin, some not, who consider us so tenderly that we feel comfortable and safe in each other’s presence. We are, no matter where that is, home, a place of warmth and security …even when the food gets strange…it is all for the “us,” the quintessential unit of family. Even apart we can be together, linked by memories and Mrs. Smith’s pumpkin pie.

Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

College hoops still matters MiLaysia Fulwiley is her name. She’s 5-foot-10, hardly the sort that should ever dominate on a basketball court, even if she’s playing for mighty South Carolina. Yet here she was, in her first college game against a pretty strong Notre Dame side in Paris, dribbling up the court late in the first half. Then she goes behind the back, takes two long steps, jumps and fakes the ball with her right hand, switches to her left hand and then converts a reverse layup. This is something few players can do, male or female. Coming from someone still in her late teens, it dropped jaws in France and across the ocean, too. Magic Johnson gave her a shout-out, just as amazed as all of us. Later that night, back in the States and just off the Vegas strip, LSU, the reigning national champions, arrived as the pre-season no. 1, Angel Reese, Kim Mulkey in an outrageous outfit, the whole show. And lost to Colorado. Welcome back, college basketball. Oh, and the men had a fun opening night, too, from Adrian Autry winning his coaching debut on the SU hill to James Madison going into

East Lansing and knocking off Michigan State. See, it didn’t take long to remind us why, despite all the trials and travails and questions and controversies, we keep coming back each winter for more because, hey, it’s still pretty fun. Not that the outside forces are ignored. Far from it. Typically, the off-season bellyaches are about various scandals or, in more recent years, the transfer portal and name, image and likeness (NIL) influencing the decisions of coaches and players alike. Something far worse was part of the lead-up to the 2023-24 season, though. It was this thing called realignment, where big, rich and powerful conferences sacrificed history, threw away integrity and, in the case of the Pac-12, outright blew up, all at the behest of vast media companies and their insatiable desire for content on fall Saturdays. Once again, the drug of football and the even more addictive opiate of TV millions were dictating the entire direction of athletic departments, caring not one whit for how it inconvenienced teams, players, families, literally anyone except the college leaders who

took home a vast majority of the spoils. When coaches’ concerns are not about defensive schemes or academic progress reports, but instead about how they can possibly cope with 2,500mile road trips within their own conference (hello, Cal and Stanford to the ACC), then we’ve messed it up. All we should really care about is Fuwilley trying to build her own legend in Columbia in the shadow of the departed Aliyah Boston, or Paige Bueckers making her long-awaited return to Connecticut, or Kaitlin Clark and her incomparable show in Iowa. The same is true on the men’s side, where Zach Edey is back at Purdue, looking for a 2019 Virginia-type redemption after that whole Fairleigh Dickinson thing a season ago, or where coaches at North Carolina (Hubert Davis) and Kentucky (John Calipari) are facing serious pressure to win, while Hunter Dickinson’s presence at Kansas really delights the folks in Ann Arbor. Even here, though, we see the post-season NIT dropping automatic bids for regular-season conference champions to prop up mediocre power con-

Phil Blackwell ference sides. Heaven forbid that should ever happen to the more important NCAA dance where Saint Peter’s nearly got to a Final Four, FAU did and San Diego State almost won it all. Regardless of the sport, and regardless of the level at which it is played, it is close to a universal truth that adults in charge always do their best to ruin and spoil the experience for the participants by making it all about themselves and their needs. Not to invoke Frozen in a sports column, but sometimes letting go is the best course of all. True joy and happiness and, yes, even a bit of glory is quite possible if we allow players to show their skills and, by doing so, express their pure joy of competition. In the span of a few seconds on a court not far from the Eiffel Tower, MiLaysia Fulwiley won her way into the hearts of all who watched her weave toward the hoop. That’s what it should be all about. Lost in this Greek tragedy are the roots of the problem. We can be cynical and say it is a problem over there but once the match is lit will it become a regional war with far reaching ramifications is anybody’s guess. There are also nuclear weapons in the Middle East which is a nightmare scenario for all. Until the roots of the problem are addressed the problem will fester and at times “blow up.” We all Leters l Page 7

need to work for a just solution. An estimated 750,000 Palestinians fled or were pushed out from their homes in the 1947 war for the creation of the state of Israel. It was not a land without people as one Israeli narrative would like us to believe. In the 67 war another 30000 Palestinians were expelled and Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. Today an estimated 700,000 Israeli settlers live in those regions with the exception of Gaza. For the sake of ourselves, Israelis and Palestinians the historical injustice of displacement of and occupation which continues today needs to be acknowledged and addressed. Than the issue of Palestinian statehood or what is called a two state solution with the creation of a Palestinian state which controls its own contiguous borders, has its own military - a state equal in rights to the state of Israel must be negotiated. Dooling thanks voter

To the editor: I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the voters in DeWitt for electing me to a four year term for a town board member on 11/7/23. A special thank you for the committee of helpers consisting of 10 members who did all the things necessary to accomplish this great feat. The hardest working being my wife, Pam, who passed out palm cards to every house in Franklin Park and Dunrovin section in our great town. I will be working for all citizens in DeWitt so please feel free to contact me w/ your concerns. My email is jhdpad@twcny.rr.com and my cell is 315-278-0495. Jack Dooling Town of DeWitt Councilor

Support PRRIA

To the editor: Scientists estimate that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. What’s more shocking? We’re treating this prediction as inevitable. As a mom who lives in Manlius, I believe we owe children better. I want my child to have a future where ocean fish outweigh ocean plastic, and so I support the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act (PRRIA), a bill being considered in New York. It would meaningfully reduce plastic pollution and keep kids safer by prohibiting the use of 15 known toxins that are currently used in packaging, including food packaging. This bill is unpopular with industries who take no responsibility for the waste they create. Suddenly, they want chemical recycling, which doesn’t reduce plastic. It only shifts the problem, creating different toxins, and burdening tax payers. And the problem is so fixable. Have you received a box in the mail this week or gone to the grocery store? Everything is wrapped in layers of unnecessary plastic that will exist on this planet for longer than we will. Every mom I’ve talked to has a depressing story of waste. We want better for our children. The PRRIA is our opportunity to provide that better future. Senator Mannion and Assemblymember Stripe, we’re counting on your active support to get it passed. And Speaker Heastie and Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, let the bill come to the floor for a vote early next year. Sari Fordham Manlius

Bobby Knight

To the editor: It was with some bemusement that I read Mr. Blackwell’s opinion piece on Bobby Knight. I was a graduate student at IU for seven years from 1980-1987 – arguably the heyday of Hoosier basketball. Those were the years of Isaiah Thomas, then later Steve Alford and Keith Smart, and of two national championships. I held season tickets and never missed a home game. There is much to be proud of as a Hoosier fan. I also taught history as a TA to under-

graduates taking their required American History classes. As such, I got to see firsthand the positive emphasis that Coach Knight put on education. In this area, Coach Knight had a positive influence. But that is where it ends…. Knight was a bully and basically a first class ******! He could not control his temper; something that ought not facetiously be argued away being a result of a hardscrabble upbringing, or time spent in the armed services. He was mean and incapable – as subsequent events proved over and over – of admitting any sort of guilt or responsibility for his own actions. Mr. Blackwell glosses over these aspects of Knight’s personality with the throwaway statement that “those who loved him…would always do so, and those who hated him…would remain staunchly opposed.” I would argue that there is a middle ground; the one that I hold. While respecting his considerable talents as a coach, it has to be remembered that he was, in many respects, a failure as a human being. Blackwell ends his column with the terse statement “The unforgettable ones tend to leave that kind of mark.” I would offer that there are other “unforgettable ones” who managed to leave a mark as well as Knight (or better), while maintaining their dignity and gentlemanliness. Dean Smith, of course, is foremost among them. Smith had a higher overall win percentage than Knight, won only one less game (but did it in five fewer seasons), and had a record of consecutive 20-win seasons (27) and a string of consecutive Sweet 16 appearances (13) that Knight didn’t approach. His players graduation rate was an astounding 97%! And he did that while being ever the gentleman, beloved by his players and fans; a true father figure to many of them. That is the kind of role model one should hold up in sports and to youth, and not that of the loudmouth bully. Peter Wozniak, Ph.D. Cazenovia

Thanks NYS Police

To the editor: This is the season for giving thanks. I would like to thank the New York State Police for filling a big need in our community. Thank you to the young women and men too, who have chosen a career in law enforcement during a time of such unrest. The State Police Academy is extremely challenging both academically and physically. In six months over two hundred recruits will graduate ,very ready to serve the state of New York. The presence of many well trained instructors living at the academy Sunday through Friday, should give our village and school’s a sense of added safety and security. I am very proud to have two sons that are members of the State Police Family and a husband a member of the retired State Police Organization. Good luck to all the recruits and a big thank you to them and their instructors. May you always be safe in your line of duty and serve the public well. GAIL DOUGHERTY Cazenovia

will otherwise go into effect everywhere in New York in 25 months. I hope that Cazenovia’s residents will inform themselves and think hard about the effect that this ban will have on our local economy, which could be as severe as the closing of Cazenovia College. I have posted more of my analysis of the minimal reductions in actual CO2 emissions from new Central New York that this ban might produce in the next 15 years, and on the politics of how this ban came to pass, on my website, MarkBraiman.com Mark Braiman Libertarian candidate for Cazenovia Town Council

It is a privilege to represent each of you and I am devoted to always listening to all resident feedback to ensure we’re making decisions to benefit our residents. I am committed to providing information in a neutral way so you can come to a conclusion independently, because your voice matters. And whether you voted for me or not, I remain committed to, and am looking forward to, serving you and showing up as we continue moving Manlius forward! Congratulations

To the editor: Congratulations to Sheila Fallon and Jimmy Golub on their election victories in the Town Council race, as well as to our newly elected Supervisor Kyle Reger. Thanks to them also, and to the Cazenovia Republican and League of Women Voters, for providing opportunities to bring issues to the voters. Thanks also to the citizens of Cazenovia, around 1200 based on preliminary election results, and especially to the 242 of you who cast a vote for me. Getting a vote as a third-party candidate on over 20% of the ballots that were cast is a fairly rare accomplishment that I am proud of. I hope it reflects an interest on the part of Cazenovia citizens in the two issues I tried to bring to the fore. One was widening East, North, and West Lake Roads to make them safer, particularly for pedestrians and bicyclists. The second was petitioning our Governor and legislative representatives to allow Cazenovia (and all localities) to opt out of the ban on new natural-gas and propane-tank hookups to homes, which

The golf boom in America started around the 1880’s in various parts of the country but nowhere more evident than in New York, Long Island, and in a few cities and towns outside of New York City throughout the state. By 1894, golf was not just a fad around the country. The United States Golf Association (USGA) was formed in 1894 and golf started booming. However, by1920, New York was still one of the few states without it’s own association and Championship. In 1923, Grantland Rice, a highly regarded sports writer at that time, wrote a column in American Golfer magazine stating that NYS should have it’s own state association and championship. After the column was published, Mr. Rice proceeded to call some of the “more prominent” golfers in New York. Invitations were then mailed to 150 golf clubs in New York with the following objective, “To foster closer and more intimate relations in and among the great body of golfers in this state than is now possible”. On August 9th of that year, delegates from around New York met at the Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford, NY and unanimously voted to form the NYSGA. This was clearly 30 years behind the rest of the states. So what is the significance of the year 1923? Of course… The New York Golf Association (NYSGA) is 100 years old. They didn’t look that old on November 4, 2023 at the distinguished Onondaga Golf and Country Club in Fayetteville, NY, but they are. I had the honor and privilege of being invited to this very special Centennial Celebration that evening along with Kathie Dyson, Joe Convertino and about 70 other attendees from all parts of New York State. All I can say is…WOW! Just how “special” was the evening? Well, let’s start out with the keynote speaker. It was non other than Dottie Pepper, currently working for ESPN and CBS Sports as a golf television analyst and reporter. You certainly remember her as a great player on the LPGA Tour which officially began in 1988 when she had seven Top 10 finishes. In 1989 she won her first LPGA Tournament beating Beth Daniel in a five-hole playoff. I watched the entire last round and playoff. I followed her Junior Golf career because she lived in Saratoga Springs, NY, about 9 miles from our home. Dottie went on to win 17 times on the LPGA Tour and it is unfortunate I do not have enough space in this article to list all of her accomplishments and awards but you should know about her legacy as an amateur golfer in New York:

Olson and Carrie Ingersoll Wood, for running for office and encouraging the victor to recognize the other 49%. Reading about Mark Olson’s false advertising about an endorsement from the CSEA that he did not receive makes me withdraw even those good wishes to him. I supported Ms. Wood because I believed that she was a candidate who understood better the issues of both our district and the whole county and was a person of integrity. I had believed that Mr. Olson was a person of integrity also even though I strongly disagreed with his choices. As The Post Standard pointed out in its editorial of November 12, his integrity is in shreds after his implying that he had the CSEA endorsement which he did not. This is a serious breach in public confidence and if his thin vote margin prevails, I would ask him in the name of rescuing some part of a reputation, to resign immediately. As the editorial put it, “if you have to cheat to win, you’re a loser no matter what the score says.” Dave Pasinski Fayetteville

Woolbert runs to 40 at state meet th

by Phil Blackwell

Once again, the Chittenango girls cross country team found itself taking the short trip to VernonVerona-Sherrill for a big race – only now this was the biggest race of their careers as the Bears were vying for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B championship. At that same state meet, Cazenovia freshman Jake Woolbert was taking in his first state championship experience as part of a Section III All-Star side with Drew O’Reilly (Westhill), Noah Melita (Hannibal), Tyson Fuller (Oneida) and Joe McMahon (Christian Brothers Academy). As it turned out, Woolbert would make an impressive showing with all of his sectional teammates, helping them to a third-place overall finish counting the all-star group and Mexico, who was fifth in the team event. Woolbert covered the VVS course in 17 minutes, 42.3 seconds, not quite matching the 17:22.9 he put up at the sectional meet a week earlier, but still good for 40th place in a field of more than 130 runners. And each of the sectional All-Stars were in that top 40 along with Mexico’s Ethan Becker, whose

In Baltimore, he worked as a broker

with the firm Chapin, Davis. After retirement, the couple moved to Cazenovia where they shared many interests, including birding, gardening, historic preservation and traveling. 150 Years Ago – Nov. 13, 1873

New Woodstock – On the night of election day some of our fast young men got on a “tear.” After going to Delphi, they came back after Cook’s hotel was shut up. They ran horses with large bells on, disturbing and arousing a large number of our citizens. Ed Wellington went out to secure a horse belonging to his father, which he thought was being misused, and was knocked down by Frank Ryan, his eye being put in colors. A warrant was issued for Ryan the next morning, but Officer Carpenter has not found him yet. Frank has served one term in jail for a like offense, and don’t care to try it again. The entire punishment, however, should not fall on Frank, but the whole company should have been put under bonds to keep the peace. These “fast” ones come around too often of late and disturb the quiet of our village, and the citizens propose to take the matter in hand and see if there is any virtue in the law.

130 Years Ago – Nov. 16, 1893

Owahgena – The new road and bridge across the inlet is still a frequent topic of conversation with our people. Opinions vary as to the success of the work, when completed according to the original plan. Engineer Berry informed the writer that, in planning the work, it was estimated that the filling of dirt on the old road and new corduroy, would settle some 40 percent. Instead, it has settled or sunk over 100 percent, requiring a much larger amount of filling material than estimated. Of course, this resulted in exhausting the state appropriation and before the work was completed, and another appropriation becomes necessary. By next season, the road will have settled sufficiently to make room for the duplication of the material already placed when slate from the tunnel, or gravel

from elsewhere may be used successfully to complete the work if a large enough appropriation is secured from the legislature. The whole expense will be at least $10,000 if a permanent roadway is built.

Will Thomas’ watch is 59 years old and has never been cleaned, yet it keeps perfect time. He purchased it from the late Will Cruttenden in 1884. During all these years it has been continuously used and all that has been done to it is replace the mainspring several times. Mr. Thomas conducts a saddlery shop on Albany Street, Cazenovia.

40 Years Ago – Nov. 16, 1983

Remember Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a book that hit the best seller list some years ago? This is a story about another seagull that is just as appealing. Joan Haines of Cazenovia had a few hours off from her job as chef at Thornfield, and stopped by the south end of Cazenovia Lake to enjoy a pretty day, eat a sandwich and feed the seagulls. As she sat on one of the rocks by the fence at the state rest area she noticed a small seagull near her. “It didn’t seem able to fly or walk, so I picked it up and tucked it in a blanket and took it over to CAVAC. The people at the ambulance corps headquarters looked it over very gently and carefully and suggested I take it up to the Cazenovia Animal Hospital. Up there, Dr. Francis Martaramo said it appeared to be dehydrated and in shock. He gave me the name of Cynthia Page in Pompey who is an artist and is also a bird person, so I went right over there. Cindy gave it water with an eyedropper, kept it warm, and later, when it began to eat, she set it free,” Mrs. Haines said. “It was just one lonely, little bird, but this experience with so many really caring people, restored my trust in the human race. There is a song called Wind Beneath His Wings – and this small bird now has the wind beneath his own wings.”
