What makes you the ideal candidate?
I bring a strong background in sales to this position, which equips me with excellent communication skills. I regularly engage with individuals to understand their needs and expectations regarding the services offered by CH Insurance-Benefits, the company I represent. My approach involves active listening and empathetic understanding, enabling me to assist clients effectively. In addition to my professional experience, my proudest accomplishment is my daughter Lilly, a talented and bright young woman who excels academically and athletically at Lemoyne College.
Why are you running for this position?
My decision to run for the position of Clay Town Supervisor is rooted in a desire for accountability within our Town government, which is the 17th largest town in New York State, home to over 60,000 residents. I previously ran for Clay Town Supervisor approximately 16 years ago, when there was a substantial Republican majority. Currently, there is a significant Democratic majority in Clay. Remarkably, Clay has not seen a single elected Democrat since 1992, a gap of over 30 years. The residents of the Town of Clay deserve meaningful representation, which requires an end to decades-long one party rule. Here is where it gets almost scary! In the past ten years the Town of Clay Republican only controlled board has cast 17,484 votes; 17,389 of which have been YES votes!!! So, since 2013 The Town of Clay Republican only controlled board has only cast 95 No votes!!! In the whole year of 2019 not one NO vote was cast by theTown of Clay Republican only controlled board!!! This is beyond ridiculous. That is the result of one-party rule, where discussion and debate simply doesn’t exist. That isn’t healthy for our democracy, which is based on a system of checks and balances. This pattern of unanimity raises concerns about the diversity of perspectives in the town’s decision-making processes. With all that we have before us, it is crucial that we have town representatives who will take a critical, thoughtful look at every proposal.
What are issues the community is facing and what would you do about them?
The most pressing issue confronting the Town of Clay is the imminent arrival of Micron and the construction of its semiconductor plant. This development presents an unprecedented opportunity for our community. We must manage this growth judiciously, ensuring that we are fully prepared for the influx of new residents, businesses, schools, and homes that will inevitably follow such a substantial corporate presence. It is imperative that we establish a robust infrastructure system capable of accommodating this anticipated growth, thus safeguarding and enhancing the quality of life for our current residents. Regrettably, our town has not adequately addressed the existing infrastructure needs, as evidenced by our deteriorating drainage system and poorly maintained roads in various areas. These issues underscore the failure of the current town board to fulfill its responsibilities. I am deeply concerned that without proactive measures, they will continue to neglect our infrastructure needs, jeopardizing our future, especially in light of the challenges posed by Micron’s arrival. We must demand effective, forward-thinking leadership to navigate these challenges successfully and ensure a sustainable future for the Town of Clay and its
Many people ask what entails being the Supervisor of an especially large Town like the Town of Clay. In this position, you wear a variety of hats, including CEO, CFO, Departmental Supervisor, and the most rewarding the political leader of a community. Each of these titles oversees many items from a multi-million dollar budget, dealing with dozens of employees in multiple departments, assisting in regulating such items as SEQR decisions and laws, to dealing with residential concerns on taxes, roadways, trash, and more. As Supervisor for the last 15 years, I feel I have come to know both residents concerns and business development opportunities all for the betterment of the Town of Clay. I also serve as President of the Onondaga County Supervisor’s Association and have served on Boards both in the past and present. All of these positions have helped me to know how to lead into the future. I have brought millions of grant dollars into Clay for projects from a special needs playground to cleaning up a brownfield in historic land adjacent to what is now 3 Rivers Park. I have held Town taxes flat for the past 3 years and if our proposed budget is passed by the Board, Clay residents will again not see an increase in 2024. All these accomplishments position the Town of Clay to thrive not just survive. To our 60,000 (+) residents. I again say we are a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
Why are you running for this position?
I am running for Clay Town Supervisor because I want to continue to shepherd the numerous projects that we have initiated as a Town. As well to expand new and existing experiences for Town residents with most projects funded by grants from a host of grantors. I also want to continue to be the political leader in our community and listen to residents ideas/critiques and together come to viable solutions that will efficiently and effectively benefit both the citizens and the town.
What are issues the community is facing and what would you do about them?
My priorities are always to provide the best possible service to Town residents, and to deliver those services on a fair and consistent basis. Following that, I want to be sure that as Micron moves into our community, they develop a footprint that respects the residents and compliments the Town. Because, in its wake we will see unprecedented growth in our community and I want to make sure that the housing and commercial development will not suffer Town residents, but rather compliment our place in Central New York.
Town Councilor (vote for 3) Joseph A. Bick Republican
What makes you the ideal candidate?
I am a Registered Nurse with extensive experience. I have an Associate, Bachelors, and master’s degree in nursing, and I am a Board Certified Nurse Executive at St. Joseph’s Health and St Peters Health partners where I serve as the Regional Director for Emergency Management. I have served on the town board since 2006, I am currently the Deputy Superivsor. I am a veteran of the War in Afghanistan, serving in the US Army as the ICU Head Nurse for the 691st Forward Surgical Team in Khost Afghanistan.

Most importantly, the town has secured millions in grant funds over the last 2 years for projects that will transform our community and provide new development that will ease the tax burden on our residents. The work has just begun. Two years is not nearly enough time to complete all that we have been working on. I am running for re-election to finish what we started.

Town Supervisor
Nick Paro (incumbent) Republican
What makes you the ideal candidate?
I have a law degree from Syracuse University College of Law, a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University, and an associate’s degree from Onondaga Community College. But before I went to college, I gained real world experience by opening a rent-to-own store just outside of Pittsburgh, PA when I was 21 years old. I remember waking up well before the sun rose to drive from Pittsburgh to Youngstown, OH to fill the box truck up with furniture and appliances. I would drive back to Pittsburgh and unload it before I worked the rest of the day either delivering furniture to customers’ homes, selling items at the store, or following up on accounts. In fact, the store was successful enough that we opened a second location before I decided to sell my share of the business and move back to Liverpool. I wanted to get involved more in my home community and to make a difference in the place where I grew up, so I came home and went to college. After I graduated, I landed my first job working in the Onondaga County Legislature, first as a legislative aide and then as a legislative analyst. I worked under now County Executive Ryan McMahon for two years and gained incredible knowledge on how local government works, and how to make government effective for the community. While working in the Legislature I also started a not-forprofit organization, Together Now, Inc. with the vision to provide high school students, between the ages of sixteen and eighteen years of age, with paid summer internships. The organization’s Emerging Leaders Summer Internship Program included a weekly personal and professional development workshop rooted in the spirit of entrepreneurship and personal growth with the end goal of providing life changing skills, experiences, and connections to future leaders of our community. In 2019 I was appointed, and then ran for election, as the Salina 1st Ward Councilor. I learned the issues of the town of Salina and listened to feedback from constituents on how they envisioned our town progressing into the future. In 2021 I was elected as the town supervisor. My first term has been amazing, we have had many successes and I have worked extraordinarily hard to reposition Salina for the future.
Why are you running for this position?
I am running to continue what we have started, transforming the town of Salina into a community we all want to live in, raise our families, and enjoy. In only 1 term (less than two years) as the supervisor we have been able to accomplish so much. We have invested in our parks - check out Duerr Park’s new playground, pavilion, or walkways; or Schaffer Park’s new pavilion and fence; and Electronics Park is having parking lot improvements done as we speak. We have paved a record number of roads in the last two years (30+ roads), implemented solutions to drainage problems, and have conducted studies in search of a more permanent solution. We fought back against the proliferation of smoke shops opening on every street corner by putting into place a law that effectively banned new ones from opening, providing the town with tools to shut down nuisance smoke shops, and give control of our communities back to the neighbors. We stopped the insane practice of “full value” assessments and lambasted state government on their heavyhanded infiltration of local issues. We stood up to New York City and protected our town’s right to self-government, rejecting the bus loads of mi-
What are the issues the community is facing and what would you do about them?
Infrastructure – paving our roads and improving drainage throughout our neighborhoods is always the most important issue for any town. Since I was elected supervisor in 2021, we have paved more roads (over 30 roads paved) than any time in our current highway superintendent’s history with the town. I am very proud of that achievement and look forward to continued improvement to our roads and making sure our neighborhood streets are the best in the county. Additionally, we are undertaking a vigorous drainage improvement plan throughout the town. We have allocated funding to clean out and re-ditch our drainage easements and have continued removing gutters and installing new roadside drainage where the gutter systems have failed. Park improvements – the parks system in any town is an amenity for all of us to enjoy, whether it be an easy walk to get some exercise, or a place to bring young ones to play. We wanted our parks system to be improved. We have added an additional 5 acres of land to Duerr Par and will be constructing a nature trail in 2024. At Duerr, we updated the playground, added a pavilion, and installed new pathways between the ball fields. At Electronics Park we just updated the parking lot and installed new sidewalks. At Burnham Park, we just repaved the parking lot by the football fields, and we will be installing a walking trail around the park in 2024. At Schaffer Park we installed a new fence to make the park more inviting and installed a new pavilion. All our parks now have camera systems for 24/7 monitoring, keeping them a safe place for us to enjoy. Codes – we have been more vigorous than ever in the most problematic part of our town holding businesses and homeowners accountable to improve our community. From neighbors who never mow their lawn and yards that pile up with broken down cars and debris, to smoke shops with enough LED lights to send a beacon to Hancock Airport, we are on their cases and working to make sure our neighborhoods and communities are well-kept. We now require tobacco licenses that come with tighter regulations on signage and lighting.
Stella Penizotto Conservative
What makes you the ideal candidate?
I have 29 years of experience operating a successful business and have served on a not for profit board. I have also won numerous awards over the year including being named Small Business Person of the Year by the US SBA. In the course of operating my own business I have learned how to manage human resources, obtain grants, work with people in the public sector and the community and possess many other skill sets that a town supervisor needs and should have to serve all the residents.
Why are you running for this position?
Many citizens in the town including myself do not agree with the direction the town has taken in the last two years and believe it’s time for a change and need to bring our town back together.
What are the issues the community is facing and what would you do about them?

meetings online on the town website so residents can view any meetings they can’t attend and still remain informed of what’s going on the town. Residents should be informed and be able to voice their opinions in major changes in the town such as the change in our garbage removal company where our bill doubled with less services being offered and without securing the required number of bids. Codes is an issue in the town as it is not enforced uniformly throughout the town. I want to make sure that everyone and every business is treated fairly so everyone can enjoy their home and business as they are entitled to. I believe in fiscal responsibility so citizens’ tax dollars are spent wisely and to keep more of their money in their pocket without sacrificing the quality and safety of our great town.
First Ward Councilor Hayley Downs Democrat
What makes you the ideal candidate?
I am a lifelong resident of Liverpool. I grew up in the Town of Salina’s third ward. I attended Liverpool Central School District, then went on to attend Syracuse University. At Syracuse University I studied inclusive elementary education, then secondary social studies education. After graduation, I worked in the City of Syracuse as a teacher. Growing up and living my adult life in the Town of Salina, helps me understand the issues and challenges town of Salina faces. Recently I graduated from Syracuse University’s program of educational leadership, and currently is a vice principal at Grant Middle School. This has led me to believe in inclusivity, being an advocate for those who need support, and the importance of continuous learning. It has also taught me the importance of being flexible, problem-solving challenges, and engaging stakeholders. I serve on the Liverpool Central School Board, and I am in year two of my three-year term. My work with district budgets has helped with understanding fiduciary responsibility. My work with policies, overseeing the superintendent, and working with a board has helped me to see the larger picture, monitor and meet goals, and look towards the future. I serve in two other volunteer roles such as Advisor for Gamma Phi Beta Sorority (Syracuse University) and am a coach for Girls on the Run. Each volunteer role helps to build and mentor young women.
Why are you running for this position?
As a former social studies teacher, I helped to instill in students the importance of local elections. Representatives live where they serve. Local elections are where change happens and decisions by local officials impact residents. I want to help make change. I want to lead by example and support the community that has given me so much. I also want to ensure that the Salina Town
Board is representative of town of Salina’s population. Currently, there is an all-male board, but almost 54% of the population is female.
What are the issues the community is facing and what would you do about them?
Effective and open communication- I will make sure our town residents have full access to our board meetings through streaming and inperson means. I will publicize our agendas with sufficient notification and time for public review. I will also host monthly community listening sessions to celebrate our town’s successes and learn about concerns of my constituents. I want to make sure the town of Salina residents in the entire town, and not just my ward, know their voices will be heard and what they say matters. Supporting the community- I want to make sure our community supports our youth through a robust parks and recreation program. I want to make sure we support our seniors and veterans living in the Town of Salina. I will also make sure there are more events at the local libraries and at locally owned businesses, supporting literacy and entrepreneurship in the town of Salina. Inclusivity- The town of Salina needs to be inclusive, and all residents need to feel supported and that they belong. I will make sure our community is involved in shared decision-making by having feedback sessions and taking in new perspectives from town residents.
Jason Recor (incumbent) Republican
What makes you the ideal candidate?
I have been a councilman for the last two years. In which the board and I have accomplished so much. Together we have been able to get millions of dollars in grants, pave a record amount of roads, and lower the tax rate.
Why are you running for this position?
I am running for councilman because I have a need to serve the community and to make my home a better place.
What are the issues the community is facing and what would you do about them?
Important issues will always be taxes, schools,crime and roads. This is not a political race. We have a candidate with 6 years of government experience, running against someone with no experience. This is not about right or left it’s about the right person for the job.

During my short time on the board, we’ve achieved so much, including: record funding for our parks, roads, and infrastructure, implementing tobacco retailer laws, securing millions in grant funding for town improvement, and eliminating full-value tax assessments.
Why are you running for this position?
I truly believe that local government is where we can make the most impact on our communities.
What are the issues the community is facing and what would you do about them?
One of the most important issues impacting our town is the speeding through our neighborhoods. This is why I implemented the “Drive Like Your Kids Live Here” Initiative in the summer of 2023. In collaboration with the Onondaga Sheriff’s department, we issued over 100 traffic violation tickets. I’m dedicated to shaping a better future for Salina, where my two-yearold son will grow up. My top priority is to represent all my neighbors with integrity, dignity and honor, ensuring that all voices are heard.

What makes you the ideal candidate?
My social work education from Syracuse University was where my passion to help and advocate for others became my reality. I have managed many social service programs for a local agency including such programs as EISEP, KMOW, and a volunteer program with more than 100 volunteers as well as providing outreach at local food pantries I have successfully written grants on local, state, and federal levels as well as private sector grants. The grant money was used to create new programs and maintain existing programs. My husband suffered a massive stroke, and I was looking for support and programs for caregivers and stroke survivors. When I couldn’t find any local programs, I started a not for profit named Cope with Stroke. When I see an unmet need I try to find a solution that works for the greater good of the community. When I see people not advocating for themselves. I assist them in having a voice. I am in my 7th year as an instructor at OCM BOCES teaching a NYS DMV mandated program called IDP (Impaired Driver Program) for individuals who have had a driving charge related to drug or alcohol impairment. I am currently celebrating my 18th year teaching kindergartenfirst grade at a local religious school. I have extensive executive board experience. I have held the position of Board president for 10 years for NCJW Syracuse Section. I have been secretary for 6 years to NCJW Syracuse Section. I have been treasurer for AccessCNY Disability Advocacy Group I have received the 2020 Volunteer of the Year award from Temple Concord. In 2022, I received the Heart and Soul award from Temple Concord. During the 2023 election cycle, I have received endorsements from Eleanors Legacy and UAW Region 9.
Why are you running for this position?
I am running to make a difference in the community that I call home. I have lived in Ward 2 for 30 years. I want to help advocate for the people in my community. I want our community to be an area where people can age in place. A community where people feel safe and a place where they are proud to live. Currently there is no diversity on the board. The board is all male all similar in age. I would like to change that and bring a dif-
ferent perspective. I am a team player, but I can also think independently. Board diversity is important to represent the entire community.
What are the issues the community is facing and what would you do about them?
There are many issues the community is facing. Infrastructure. Making sure the streets are in safe condition and plowed in the winter. Ensuring the sewers and drainage are working effectively, and when there is a problem notifying residents when the work will be done done. Accountability. Making sure the people you voted in are doing the job they are paid to do. This also includes attending board meetings. When a board has no diversity, no one is being held accountable. I believe when you are a board member, you are representing your community all the time. You are accountable for your words and actions as a representative of the town. What you see on my social media accounts and what I say on social media is representative of the person I am. Taxes. Our town needs people who will represent the entire town and everyone’s interests. Budgeting drives the tax base. Without board diversity, not everyone’s interests are going to be considered. Spending concerns affect everyone, and diversity is crucial in making decisions that represent our entire community. Transparency. If you can’t make the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at 6:30 pm you don’t know what’s going on in the town. I have started videoing the meetings and created a YouTube channel for all to see. I would like to have live zoom meetings for people that are unable to make the meeting. I’ve heard numerous times that there was a hearing on a particular issue and residents had no idea and a decision was made without public opinion. Comments are limited to 3 minutes. I would like to have ward meetings where residents could be on zoom or in person on a particular day and share the good and bad that’s happening in their neighborhoods. I would bring to the board on behalf of my ward or assist residents in speaking at the board meetings. Traffic safety. Speeding through neighborhoods and stop signs has been a major concern to residents. I would like to have the removable speed bumps in locations where there are problems and rotate around the different neighborhoods. I would advocate for a larger sheriff’s presence in the neighborhoods to reduce speeding and crime. In closing, the first step in having your voice heard is by VOTING. I am currently serving my second term in this position which has been almost 4 years. Since being in this position I have helped to reduce our Town taxes by working with the rest of the Town Board and department heads to identify ways to improve efficiencies and cut spending. I have also been a member of the Code Task Force Committee and have addressed/corrected many flaws in our Town Law as well as identified procedural issues that are still being worked on.

Road repairs planned - DOT will reconstruct Route 370 through the village in 2025 By Russ Tarby Contributing Writer
For more than a dozen years, village residents along Second Street, near Hickory, have been loudly complaining about the poor condition of Route 370, known in the village as Second Street. One of the most common observations by motorists is that they bounce along the pavement there “which is like a washboard.” More than four dozen residents of Liverpool and the town of Salina attended a session hosted by state officials on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Liverpool Middle School at which they described repairing the troubled roadway.

What are the issues the community is facing and what would you do about them?
The issues that residents have spoken to me about over the years the most are the appearance of the area and the issues with teenagers not having enough to do to keep them out of trouble. Through addressing issues with the Town Law/Codes Department and actively being involved in looking for and obtaining grants for this area we have started to address the appearance issue. I have also advocated putting more money into the budget for paving more roads each year. Things are starting to get cleaned up, businesses are finally fixing their buildings and parking lots, and we are building a new Town of Salina Community Center where the former roller-skating rink used to be. The more we invest in our community, the more businesses we will start to see filling empty storefronts. The resurgence of this area is starting to take shape. As far as the teens, there are two things we are currently working on: 1) In the new community center, we want to provide teens with their own space and will be working with The CanTeen to provide programs and give insight on what should be in this space. 2) We are looking into ways to restructure the budget to build a recreational program for the entire Town of Salina to have more activities to keep kids/ teens of all ages occupied. As much as we all wish for things to be fixed overnight, it takes time for certain wishes to come true, especially after many years of this area being pushed aside. The fight has been long, and we are starting to see progress, but it is not over yet. If the voters want me to be, I plan on being here until it is finished.

NY State Department of Transportation project director Paul Lo Gallo narrated a 15-minute slide show outlining the proposed reconstruction of state Route 370 along a one-mile stretch in the village, easterly from the Liverpool Elementary School entrance to the intersection at Oswego Street at Heid’s corner. The work, scheduled to begin in April 2025, will include excavation and removal of the road’s existing pavement, a reconstruction of the roadway base, upgrades to traffic signals, updating the drainage system and installation of handicappedaccessible curb ramps. At the intersection of 370 with Tulip and Vine streets, a one-block stretch of
each street will also be repaved. The project should be competed by November 2025. Lo Gallo said he has met with Liverpool Mayor Stacy Finney, who attended Wednesday’s meeting. Also taking in the DOT presentation were Salina Town Supervsor Nick Paro, First Ward Town Councilor Jason Recor and Liverpool Chamber of Commerce Director Lucreatia Hudzinksi. The session featured displays and documents about the project. Project materials will also be available through Nov. 10 at the Liverpool Public Library, 310 Tulip St. The DOT seeks public comment via telephone, e-mail or postal mail until Nov.

As a father of two sons David (25) and Dominic (23) I have raised children in the Town of Salina. Starting Kindergarten at Nate Perry Elementary through graduation at Liverpool High School. I coached my sons at Salt City Little League. I started with Pyramid Brokerage Company in 2013 and have specialized in commercial real estate services for more than 10 years. With extensive experience working as a representative with fiduciary duties to my clients, I have honed my skills as an effective communicator, strategic thinker, and problem-solver. These skills seamlessly transition into the political arena as I work to improve the quality of life for all in the Town of Salina.

Back in 1908, Route 370 was known as Route 34. State maintenance began in 1926, although the name didn’t change for four more years. In 1930 NYS Route 370 was assigned that name to replace the old Red Creek–Liverpool highway. From Liverpool to Syracuse, modern NY 370 was initially part of NY 57, but that route was eliminated in 1982.
I have been honored and humbled by serving as the judge in the town of Salina for the last 15 years. I truly have a passion for justice and a deep understanding of the law. I, along with my clerks and court officers, take great pride in treating every person, whether they are in court for a civil case or a criminal case, with dignity and respect. We understand that appearing in court can be very stressful. We try to alleviate that stress by treating everyone equally and fairly. Being involved in an individual’s life is an awesome responsibly. According to AAA, their research has shown that October, November and December tend to be the peak months for crashes involving animals, particularly deer in Central New York. There were 36,743 animalrelated crashes statewide in 2022 – up 7% from 2021 - that’s equivalent to one animal-related crash every 15 minutes, according to AAA. Of the 36,743 crashes, there were 1,675 injury animal-related crashes and two fatal crashes. AAA reports that 1,070 alone were in the Onondaga County area. AAA always encourages drivers to stay vigilant behind the wheel, but notes that this time of year it is increasingly important in the interest of avoiding a potential crash with a deer or other wildlife. It is also noted that as the seasons change and the hours of daylight diminish it can be even more difficult to spot wildlife in the roads particularly later in the day. According to AAA this season is a particularly active time for deer as it is the height of mating season. But AAA has offered some suggestions to help drivers mitigate the chances of having an encounter with a deer. These crashes can be costly in terms of vehicle repairs, but also in terms of personal injury to drivers as well as passengers. In the interest of safety there are some things drivers should keep in mind this time of year. Drivers should always be vigilant when behind the wheel, avoiding distractions like cell phones and keeping focus on the road. When it comes to deer and other animals it is recommended that drivers scan the shoulders of the road as deer may dash out from the shoulder or wooded areas adjacent to the road and keep in mind that they often travel in herds. Drivers should also follow the speed limit. Lower speed will give you more time to respond to unexpected wildlife movements. Unfortunately, even for the most vigilant of drivers some times accidents with wildlife are unavoidable. If a collision is unavoidable, apply the brakes firmly and remain in your lane. Swerving sharply to avoid an animal can often cause a more serious crash. Deer can be hard to see, particularly at certain times of day as they often blend in with trees and foliage. And at night, when our vision is already more limited and there are the lights from other vehicles coming toward us and behind us, it can be even more difficult to see a deer or other animal dashing across the road. According to AAA, motorists should be especially vigilant while driving in the dark as deer crashes often occur outside daylight hours. Most crashes occur in the two hours before sunrise and after sunset each day, according to AAA and crashes are common around dusk from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Deer and other wildlife are part of life in Central New York and by taking some steps to be diligent when we are on the road we can do our best to keep them and ourselves safe from vehicle accidents. But, the areas where I can offer any support are gradually being eroded by technology and changing culture. So, I am sitting here wondering what I can contribute to the future lives of my grandsons… Right now, I am sure that I can teach them how to tell time when the clock has a minute and an hour hand, how to use a rotary phone and I can translate from cursive writing to printing. Historic Moment: Rural schools

With the advent of motorized vehicles, the State stepped in with more regulations. The pickups should occur each morning and night, the State said. These pickups should be as near to the house as could be done conveniently, and students should not be required to leave home earlier that 3/4 of an hour before the school opened. Local schools still operating would provide a safe waiting place for students not directly picked up. The name of the school was required to be on the side of the bus, and to be heated in the winter time. And the bus driver was not to exceed 30 miles per hour. The xstate would provide half the transportation cost. This also meant that the State would have supervision over the vehicles used. In 1930, Herbert Splane and Russell Lader contracted to run school buses to pick up those students in grade 7 and upward, and bring them
OBITUARIES Allen S. Odell, 90 Marcellus native, Army veteran
Allen Smith Odell, originally from Marcellus, passed away Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, in his home at Golden Crest Senior Community in Hampstead, MD, of Alzheimer’s disease and complications after having COVID. Allen was the son of John Dwight and Aleene Smith Odell of Marcellus. He was 90 years old. Allen was president of his graduation class of 1951 at Marcellus High School. He was handed his high school diploma by his father, John Dwight Odell, president of the school board at the time. The Odells resided in the historic home in Marcellus known as “The Dan Bradley House” on South Street. After attending Cornell University from 1951-1952, Allen took employment with the architectural firm, Sergeant, Webster, Crenshaw and Folley in Syracuse. Allen then went on to graduate from Michigan State University in 1956 with his degree in landscape architecture. In July of 1956, he was drafted into the Army with
an honorable release from active duty in July of 1958. After returning from the service, Allen began employment with Jackson and Perkins Rose Growers in Newark, N.Y., and remained there for five years. He then returned to Michigan to begin his employment with Franks Nursery where he shared his love for gardening and flower arranging, helping anyone who he came in contact with for the 36 years he worked there where he received a “Certificate of Achievement” and numerous accolades from staff and customers. Allen was very committed to his community in Plymouth, MI. He was named “Volunteer of the Year” for both The Lions Club and The Plymouth Historic Society. Allen received a “Business Beautification Award” in the landscaping category from the Plymouth Community Chamber of Commerce for the gardening and flower arranging he maintained within the community. Allen traveled to many countries where he collected art and memories he spoke of frequently. He was an avid reader and had a deep appreciation for art and fine music as he and

His sister, Sally Odell Wroe, says that “Allen was so kind and thoughtful, generous and humorous and such a pleasure to be with.” Allen is survived by his sister, Sally, nieces and nephews Beth Wroe Yersel (Metin) of West Boylston, MA, John R. Wroe (Beth Anne) of Seattle, WA, Carrie Wroe Connor (Kevin) of Reisterstown, MD, and Timothy A. Wroe of Amsterdam, N.Y., along with many great nieces and nephews. In Skaneateles Falls, the (school) district line resulted in some students being sent to Elbridge, while others were bused to Skaneateles. Shepard Settlement and West Hill students, in the northeast section of the Town of Skaneateles, had already been included in the Marcellus School District when it centralized in 1938. March 21, 1952, the high school, built in 1910, was destroyed by fire. The school already had a plan underway for a new high school up on the hill of East Elizabeth Street. Construction started in May of 1952. In September of 1953 the State Street School was opened on site of the former high school. In 1966 the Waterman School was opened, named after Belle Waterman who was a third grade teacher in the village school in 1902.

to the Skaneateles School. In 1931, school busses first started transporting students from Shamrock Coon Hill and Spafford District #7 schools to Skaneateles High School. They also transported 12 high school students from the west side of the lake. Students who rode the busses were called “bus kids.” Later George Tallcot ran two buses, and George Bentley ran a third bus. The state had passed a Central School District Law in 1925. A central school could provide a wider range of educational programs and provide specially equipped classrooms for the students in specific subjects. This would enhance the financial base of the central school and make teachers’ salaries more equitable. However, it wasn’t until May 26, 1950 that a decision to centralize was put before the Skaneateles residents. Of the 903 residents who voted, the count was 826 for and 77 against. For those of you who do enjoy and look forward to Fall golf in the Northeast, I can just about guarantee that among the reasons you play in the Fall would include the following: * The Fall colors on the trees are pretty close to spectacular. * The weather is better than those 90 degree humid days during the Summer. * It’s cheaper !!! * Less crowded. * The round is usually 15-40 minutes shorter. * It keeps your heart rate up and maintains maximum benefit. * It’s good for your brain because of breathing the healthy, clear, fresh air. * Your expectations are lower. * Golf is a “low-risk” injury sport. * You will sleep better. * Fostering relationships is easier and more meaningful. he early settlers of the Town of Skaneateles, even when it was still part of the Township of Marcellus, realized how important an education was for the betterment of their children. An act by the state legislature in 1812, established the New York school system. This legislation required schools to be within walking distance of five year old boys and girls. Under good conditions, 20 to 30 minutes was considered a reasonable walking time. As more and more people came into the area, many schools were built to serve this need. Schools with such names as Poverty Corners, Hen Coop, Peach Blow, West Hill, Thorne and Shotwell to name a few. There were also schools just outside the town line that served the students of Skaneateles. These included Shamrock, Clintonville, Hart Lot, Mud Coe, County Line and others. General Robert Earl built the first school in Skaneateles, constructed of hewn logs, on the west side of the creek at Willow Glen, in 1798. The next school was built in Willow Glen on Old Seneca Turnpike, near the intersection of Jewett Road. It too was a log cabin built by Dr. Munger who, besides practicing medicine, taught school. The early schools were not insulated buildings, and students often in the winter, not only wore their coats, but their mittens and overshoes as well during classes. Frost would be so thick on the windows that students would carve their names into it. But in spite of the cold, school never closed. Although attendance would be down, the teacher was always there. Water was always available,
with students often drinking from a common cup or dipper. Prior to that, in 1917, the advent of chemical toilets resulted in many of the toilet facilities being moved from the outhouse to inside the school building. All grades were taught reading, writing, spelling and arithmetic. Student in grades 4, 5, 6, and 7 were taught English, geography and history. Teachers, besides preparing lessons for grades 1 to 7, were not only responsible for keeping the stove fire going, but also sweeping the school floor and shoveling the front entrance free of snow. Some even washed the windows. For all this, a teacher would in the early days, earn $10 per month for 24 weeks of school. School days were broken up by visits from a music teacher, who taught singing and another who would give gym exercises. The district superintendent would visit each school three times a year to check up on the teacher and the students’ progress. Another frequent visitor was the school doctor who would gave the students their physicals and vaccinations. In 1853, New York State passed the Union Free School Law. This act provided for a junior school of grades seven, eight and nine, and a high school of grades 10, 11 and 12. In Skaneateles, in order to continue their education after the rural school, the older students needed to attend the village high school. To be closer to the school, girls often roomed with family or friends in the village in return for helping with the household chores. The boys had a harder time finding work in the village, and were also needed on the farm, so many of them simply walked. The state, accepting joint responsibility for the training of the child along with the parents, felt that the same held

C-NS girls soccer wins sectional Class AA title by Phil Blackwell
Though they have met plenty of times in plenty of circumstances in the last four decades, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool girls soccer teams do not have many championship showdowns in their annals. Yet when they met last Saturday night at SUNYCortland for the first-ever Section III Class AAA championship, it proved quite memorable – and for the Northstars in particular, quite satisfying. It wasn’t just that C-NS prevailed 2-1 over the Warriors. It was the way it all happened, a three-minute scoring surge led by a talented eighth-grader, Abby Mackey, who healed a wound that dated back two years. The Northstars were undefeated and favored going into the 2021 sectional Class AA playoffs, only to get stunned by Liverpool in the semifinal round. That result was a bitter memory C-NS players past and present wanted to erase.
Of course, the Warriors, who lost 2-0 and 4-0 decisions to the Northstars in the regular season, wanted to prolong C-NS’s misery, and took a step toward doing so when Alexa Marsh scored in the 24th minute, the only goal for either side in the first half. It remained 1-0 until late in the second half, when Mackey, who had already produced 10 goals this season, took over, first by getting herself open and, from 20 yards out, putting in the equalizer past Gracie Sleeth with 11:25 left in regulation. Then, with 8:14 to play, Emilee Rio, one of those holdovers from the 2021 team, sent a perfect pass to the middle where Mackey grabbed it, dribbled and then, with Sleeth drawn out of her net, put in the go-ahead goal. This showdown was the result of last Wednesday’s semifinals at Chittenango where C-NS held off Rome Free Academy and Liverpool topped Baldwinsville, each of them 2-1 decisions. Going first, the top-seeded
Northstars faced an RFA side that beat Syracuse United 3-0 in the Oct. 20 opening round - the program’s first playoff win since 2017. Having not played in 11 days, C-NS had some uneven moments at the outset, but in the 16th minute it grabbed a 1-0 lead when Julianna Edwards’ pass found Mackey on a breakaway and Mackey converted. Late in the half, after a great stop from Black Knights goalie Mikayla McPheron, the subsequent corner kick turned into a second C-NS goal when Sophia Donovan converted from the point off a rebound. Heading to the second half with a 2-0 advantage, the Northstars could not pull further away. Instead, RFA picked up its pressure and, with 16:18 left, pulled within one when Amelia Furbeck poked home the rebound of a long free kick C-NS goalie Meghan McGrath could not hold on to that free kick - but she was able to keep a possible gametying shot from crossing the
goal line with four minutes left, and the Northstars held on from there. Then it was Liverpool’s turn against a B’ville side it beat twice in the regular season in equal 1-0 decisions. Midway through a lively first half, B’ville goalie Alyssa Luce could not hold on to Kaylee Lockwood’s long shot from the left side and Grace Muller was able to convert to put the Warriors in front. The Bees countered when, on a free kick late in the half, Nadia Guzman drilled a free kick into the top center of the net, and it stayed 1-1 until Alexa Marsh delivered a special and decisive moment. In the 57th minute, Liverpool was probing in front of the Bees’ net. A pass from Isabella Melfi found Marsh, who with her left foot from the left side 25 yards out delivered a note-perfect shot inside the top left corner of the net that Luce had no chance to stop. Again protecting a onegoal lead, the Warriors were effective possessing the ball in B’ville’s end, and earned

If there is a moment down the road where the Liverpool football team finds glory again, it might point back to last Saturday’s opening round of the Section III Class AA playoffs as a turning point. A disastrous start had left the Warriors trailing visiting Utica Proctor 20-0, but somehow the hosts recuperated, roared back and eventually defeated the Raiders by a score of 29-26. These teams had met Sept. 23 in Utica and Liverpool had won easily 36-6. But the Raiders that came to LHS Stadium were ready and let the Warriors know it.

I have also been an active member of the Town of Clay Republican Committee for over 25 years. I have attended the majority of the Micron meetings since it first investigated the possibility of moving to Clay.
Why are you running for this position?
I feel I am very well qualified for the position based on my many years of involvement in the town and my experience. The decisions I have made and the votes I have cast on the Zoning Board of Appeals were always based on what I felt best for the taxpayers and the town of Clay after listening to the input from everyone involved.
What are the issues the community is facing and what would you do about them?
The town of Clay is a great place to live and raise a family, going forward we will all be faced with some challenges. With Micron and many other businesses coming into Clay it will be critical that we as a town board make sure we work to minimize the impact of the growth on the residents.

Since graduating from Seton Hall University School of Law in 2003, I served as an Assistant District Attorney in Onondaga County, where I prosecuted some of the most heinous and notorious criminals in this County. Prior to that, I served as a Department of Social Services Attorney in Cortland County, prosecuting child neglect and abuse cases, and an Assistant Prosecutor in Monmouth County New Jersey. These positions provide me with a unique and deep understanding of criminal law and procedure, having done the work necessary to successfully present a case to both a Judge and jury. As a Judge who will preside over criminal and other cases, this experience is invaluable in ensuring that the decisions I would make from the bench protect the rights of all those involved, including the victims, and justice being served. I also had the opportunity to serve as a Confidential Law Clerk and Court Attorney for the Honorable Michele Pirro Bailey. In this role, I was able to observe and learn what is required to be a successful and fair jurist in our court system. Liverpool boys soccer falls to B’ville in sectional final by Phil Blackwell
The Liverpool boys soccer team lost the Section III Class AAA championship to Baldwinsville 1-0. Having twice topped the Bees 1-0 in the regular season, Liverpool had the confidence and momentum, only to get it stifled by the Bees’ back line.
Jordan Baker, Ryan Bullis, Alec Smith and Tyler Williams worked together from the outset to frustrate Liverpool’s forwards, especially clamping down on Antoino Wilson and rarely giving him space to maneuver. Meanwhile, on the other end, Bees players like Nick Ramin and Andrew Jung stretched out the Warriors’ defense and
tested it through runs and set pieces, all of which increased B’ville’s confidence. Then, with less than five minutes left in regulation and the game still 0-0, the Bees broke through – and fittingly, Bullis, one of the defenders, was in the middle of it all. Bullis had moved up the field after another Bees charge and gained possession in
the left corner. When he crossed to the net, Will Stevens was stationed at the far post. When McQuatters hesitated, Stevens outjumped him – and found the net for the biggest goal of his high school career, all that B’ville needed , as it turned out, for its first sectional title since 2019.
