As a writer, Jadi Campbell, a Cazenovia native, has garnered a great deal of praise and attention for her work.

The most recent accolade, which came as a total surprise to the author, was being named the winner of the 2023 SanFranciscoBookFestivalfor general fiction for her story collection “The Trail Back Out.”

Campbell said she recently completed her fifth novel in and in the process of sending out query letters for publication she was compiling information on her previous works

when she learned that she had been named a winner in San Francisco.

“At the start of July I received an announcement that the winners of the 2023 San Francisco Book Festival had been selected,” Campbell said. “They did not personally inform us if we had placed. I scrolled down the official announcement page and saw that my book had won.”

Campbell’s work was up against a large field of competitors.

According to Campbell, the festival doesn’t have a category for short story collections and she said she didn’t think

she was going to win since she had to submit her work in the general fiction category, putting it up against everything from romances to mysteries, thrillers and everything in between.

“My book won over more than 600 other titles,” Campbell said. “To be selected was a fantastic shock. Fewer than 5% of books considered ever place in their festivals. To be honest, I figured it had the proverbial snowball’s chance in hell. ‘The Trail Back Out’ is a collection of short stories. Aside from science fiction, all the fiction books were entered

Lavender Blue celebrates 20 years in business

Two hundred years ago, 74 Albany St. was a bar and a trading post. Twenty years ago this past July, the building became home to the much loved, world-class boutique filled with all things French, Lavender Blue.

Over the years, co-owners Judith Warburton and Eileen Lowe have learned a lot about embracing risks, seeing opportunities, and appreciating serendipity. In fact, the two grew up 40 miles away from each other in Cheshire, England unbeknownst to them. Their children were born in the same small cottage hospital eight years apart. Their husbands were recruited to work in Syracuse around the same time.

It wasn’t until Warburton and Lowe met at a dinner party in Cazenovia that they realized their shared history, a history that blossomed into a future that has changed the landscape of our town - and the interior of many homes around the world - for the better.

The inspiration for Lavender Blue began with Warburton’s fascination with the art form of coated French tablecloths, and her wish to solve an age-old problem for Americans.

“We had all traveled extensively in France and seen the unique table linens with their cotton base and acrylic coating that allowed everyone at the table to relax as every spill could be wiped up leaving no traceso different from the traditional white damask that stained at the first drop of wine,” she said.

The idea of selling these tablecloths didn’t really materialize until Warburton slipped and fell one day.

“It was just serendipity. On a bad day, I saw the shop; the barber had a sign in the window, ‘For Sale By Owner,’” Warburton said. She took a look around, “And that day, all those ideas came. I thought immediately of Eileen because

Update given on lease of Cazenovia College campus

During the Aug. 7 Village of Cazenovia Board of Trustees meeting, Mayor Kurt Wheeler provided a brief update on the short-term plan for the use of the Cazenovia College campus.

About two weeks prior to the meeting, the New York State Police officially entered into an agreement with Cazenovia College to lease a large portion of the campus for use as its new NYS Police Basic School Auxiliary Academy, which will run concurrently with the NYS Police Training Academy in Albany.

The two-year lease began Aug. 1 and includes the buildings that make up the main college campus, as well as the athletic center.

Wheeler reported that since Aug. 1, there has been a “skeleton crew” of people on campus doing a lot of information technology work and preparing for the arrival of the academy’s first class.

Most of the staff should be on campus on Oct. 1, and training is scheduled to begin on Oct. 16, according to Wheeler.

The leased space can accommodate up to 275 recruits.

“That’s about the number we’re looking at; they hope to have a full class of 275,” Wheeler said.

The trainees are required to stay on campus from Sunday evening through Friday evening each week during the program.

“There will be just a very minimal crew here on the weekends,” said Wheeler. “Cadets are allowed to go home on the weekends, and most of the instructors will probably go home on the weekends as well.”

Wheeler noted that he thinks it will be important to communicate to the community that the campus is no longer home to a small liberal arts college.

“It was fine if classes were going on at the college and you were wandering through with your dog, [but the state police] will be doing some pretty high-intensity law enforcement training,” he said. “. . . On the weekends if you are wandering through, no one is going to care, but Monday through Friday if they are in the middle of training, [they] are not going to want civilians wandering through.”

I was sure we would work well together.”

“Judith had a vision for the store. It was an opportunity to bring France to Cazenovia,” said Lowe.

The former director of financial development for the American Red Cross was willing to take the risk.

“It’s a willingness to be able to not be too sure of what’s ahead of you,” Lowe said.

Lowe’s husband, David, and Warburton’s husband, Peter, were happy to support their wives.

“[They] worked tirelessly with [us] in preparing the old barber’s shop (owned by Ford Lamb for 40 years) to be the space to transform our dining experience into a joy, and blast of colors from the South of France and particularly Provence,” said Warburton.

“We had people on the first weekend coming in and singing [the English nursery rhyme] Lavender Blue,” said Lowe.

At that time, they had one supplier, but that changed over the years.

“In our attempt to bring the very best items to Cazenovia we started our yearly visit to France to discover the perfect designers and distributors - then [we] expand[ed] our search to Spain for our ceramics. At times we felt like the adventurer Marco Polo bringing back treasures from Europe,” said Warburton.

Now they offer a treasure trove of products from dozens of suppliers to customers all over the world. People often stop in or call to talk about their travels. They ask for advice about places to go in France. To some, the store is a

travel destination.

“[Lavender Blue is] a touch of class, and wanderlust,” said Alex Altamonte, owner of H. Gray Supply Co. “We get to travel going into the store. There’s nothing like it around here, or anywhere.”

Lowe and Warburton have sold their products at garden shows, lavender festivals in Clinton and Skaneateles, the French festival in Clayton, Walnut Hill Farms in Pittsford, Thousand Islands, to name a few. They also partnered with Mackenzie Childs and collaborated with students studying advertising and business at Cazenovia College.

After 20 years of success, they have some words of wisdom to share.

For those interested in owning their own business, Lowe

He added that as far as he was aware at the time, the athletic facility would not be accessible for public use due to liability reasons and training requirements.

“We will communicate any updates on that,” he said.

Wheeler also reported that with the lease finally signed and the short-term plans for the campus solidified, A&G Real Estate Partners has increased its marketing of the campus properties on behalf of the bondholders.

“I’ve heard secondhand through [Cazenovia College President] Dave Bergh that they’ve gotten a pretty good response [with] new inquiries and some old inquiries following back up,” he said. “We are kind of cultivating a couple of folks that have expressed interest that we think would be particularly good fits. I’m optimistic that there will be some movement in the next month or two on that.” in other news

“I remember [Andrea Moreau] going from table to table one evening [at WBYC] recruiting for WOW,” said fleet co-captain Beecher Graham, one of the first WOWs. “Her enthusiasm was contagious. I had not sailed, but immediately said yes.” Sicne then Graham said the WOWs have been sailing, facing all kinds of weather and water conditions.

“We’ve sailed in all types of weather: days where you could sit in the hull, feet on the deck and control the boat with your fingers on the tiller and hand on the mainsheet,” Graham said. “And other days with the boat heeled over in howling gusty winds revealing the underside of the boat.”

Paula Stanton is a rtetired Spanish teacher.

“I joined WOW because Beecher Graham was unrelenting in her invitation to experience sailing Sunfish with wonderful women on Cazenovia Lake,” she said. Today, Stanton can’t imagine her future without the fleet.

“I love remembering times with our longtime sailors of 75 to 85 years – priceless! And, I want to be here when I’m that age,” Stanton said. Many WOWs see the fleet as an opportunity for themselves.

Susan Anthony reflected on joining the group in the early 1990s.

“At that time some of us were breaking free of full-time child care and were moving on to the life that we had left behind as we raised our families,” Staton said. “We decided that WOW would be a chance for us to improve our skills as sailors, build community with other likeminded women and to have fun and share our lives. Today we have accomplished all of that and continue to share our experiences with other Women of Willowbank.”

Sharon Jasek is a retired family nurse practitioner. “I loved sailing but put it on hold to spend all of my time with family,” she said. “When they grew up, I knew I wanted to get back into it. I forgot a lot and didn’t know where to begin. I finally found Willow Bank (after 10 years of looking) and immediately

Cazenovia native releases new single

Music is in the air once again for Cazenovia native Faith Gara.

Her upcoming single “Still Want It” is set to be released on Aug. 11 on all platforms and is currently available on pre-order through Spotify.

Gara made a name for herself in 2019 with the release of her first single “Ms. Claus,” and then again in 2020 with the release of “Heartbreak Looks Better.”

Since then, she’s contin-

ued to create music and has taken some big steps towards advancing her career.

“I know I’m meant to make music,” she said. “It has always been so clear to me, and most importantly, what makes me the most happy.”

Gara attended Cazenovia Central Schools from kindergarten through her sophomore year of high school, after which she and her family moved to New York City.

She attended Gramercy Arts High School for a year and a half before transferring

back to Cazenovia to complete her final semester and graduate in June 2017.

While living in Cazenovia, Gara sang in the Syracuse Children’s Chorus for three years, performed in four Syracuse Opera shows, sang in the choirs at school, and participated in local community theater.

A self-taught guitar and piano player, the musician started voice lessons at age eight and began songwriting at age 11.

Since her last single, she

released a solo track called “Blame” and a six track extended play with her songwriting group Smokelines.

After graduating from Long Island University Brooklyn in June of 2021, she moved across the country to California and is currently obtaining a master’s degree in songwriting remotely from Boston’s Berklee College of Music.

as general fiction. My book was in competition with thrillers, romances, novels, mysteries, chick lit, literary fiction, summer beach books, etc. Winning against such a variety of genres really validates the short story.

I’m self-published, so the win is even sweeter. This is the sixth award distinction for ‘The Trail Back Out,’ and my ninth overall. My long-term hope is that the book awards will convince publishing houses to consider publishing the book I spent the last two years writing.”

Previously Campbell’s book was named a finalist for the 2020 “Best Book” award in the category of fiction anthologies and was also selected as a quarterfinalist in the 2021 ScreenCraft Cinematic Short Story Competition as well as being named a finalist for the 2021 IAN Book of the Year Award (Short Story Collection) by the Independent Author Network, a community of authors who are self-published or published by a small indie press.

Sponsored by American Book Fest, the Best Book competition received 2,000 entries, which were narrowed down to over 400 winners and finalists in over 90 categories.

Awards were presented for titles published in 2018-2020 based on design, content and overall appeal.

According to Campbell, “The Trail Back Out” was the only self-published book in its category.

“[This recognition] means everything,” she said. “I am beyond thrilled. Past winners have included Amy Tan, George Saunders, Clive Barker and Ann Lamott, which puts me in very good company. This is the 17th year these awards have been handed out in the publishing industry. I’m self-published, so being named a finalist is an extra honor.”

The anthology, which features 10 stories, is Campbell’s fourth book.

According to the author, the characters in each story are all trying to make sense of events.

“They are all looking for the trail back out,” she said. “Whether during the upheaval of the last century or the present COVID-19 crisis, each story guides the reader through a labyrinth of questions about how to live and love.”

Campbell graduated from Cazenovia High School in 1975. Although she has lived in Germany for the past 28 years, she continues to attend reunions when possible.

The title story of “The Trail Back Out” takes place on the back trails at Cranberry Lake in the Adirondacks.

“It’s not an accident that [this story] is set in Upstate New York,” she said. “The places and people remain close to my heart.”

The author holds a bachelor of arts degree in English literature from the Honors College of the University of Oregon.

She published her first book, “Broken In: A Novel in Stories,” in 2012. Her second and third novels, “Tsunami

Cowboys” and “Grounded,” followed in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

Campbell wrote many of the stories featured in her short story collection during the coronavirus lockdown.

“I had been thinking about collecting my short stories into a full book, [and] I wanted to write some new stories, too,” she said. “Germany went into full lockdown due to COVID19 in March, so it was the perfect time to write – I had no excuses left.”

While “The Trail Back Out” and other works by Campbell have received accolades, the author has kept writing. And she said writers tend to love to talk about their current works as well as their completed and published pieces.

Campbell said her current work is titled “The Taste of Your Name.”

“It’s the first book I’ve set entirely in Europe,” she said. “On the streets here in Germany we heard Arabic when Syrian refugees arrived after 2015. Now we hear Russian and Ukrainian, thanks to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Waves of people fleeing wars keep arriving, and I wanted to write a longer novel that addresses the situation. My new book is the story of an erotic triangle, reclaimed memories, the fates of refugees, and the importance of bread. When you finish reading, nothing will ever taste the same.”

Campbell went on to explain a little more about her new book.

“One of my main characters is Mustafa, a baker from

Celebration of life planned

Damascus,” she said. “He’s synesthetic: Mustafa can taste words. I thought it was a wonderful technique to talk about the tastes of fear, and hope, and love. Mustafa’s special gift led me to call the book ‘The Taste of Your Name.’ Another character in the story is an asylum seeker with severe PTSD. Her story is what happens to people who give up everything, including hope. As a massage therapist, I volunteered for several years doing trauma massage work for refugees. It just about broke my heart. And, finally, the book includes an erotic triangle of a German, an American, and an American-German. I’ve lived here for more than 30 years, and can relate to all three of these characters! The triangle however is not based on personal experience.”

With multiple published works, and one book in the process of finding a publisher, Campbell said she finds that she still has plenty of ideas she wants to work on and she draws inspiration and energy from other creative people she associates with.

“I can’t write fast enough to keep up with all the ideas for stories,” Campbell said. “I belong to The Writers in Stuttgart and we meet up to critique each other’s works fiercely and honestly. I also write for NEAT, Stuttgart’s New English American Theater. I’m around talented actors, and singers, and musicians, and playwrights. Writing is a solitary endeavor, and both groups’ energies and creative work definitely inspire me.”

Campbell’s writing covers a variety of topics and characters, but she does hope whatever pieces of her work people may read they can find a common thread.

“That we’re all connected,” she said. “Everyone of us shares the same dreams and humanity. No matter what our age or race or sex or religion or place of origin, I hope my readers recognize themselves in my characters and their dilemmas.”

With readers all around the world, Campbell said it is always exciting when she hears from people back home to who enjoy her work.

“For our last class reunion, I offered to read from my first book as part of the evening’s entertainment program,” Campbell said. “My old classmates were fantastically supportive. A lot of my work is set in upstate New York ‘Tsunami Cowboys,’ the story Carl Possessed from ‘Broken In,’ and the title story of ‘The Trail Back Out.’ When people tell me I got the details right, it feels great. There’s also a very deep satisfaction that my peers – the people who knew me way, way back, when I first said out loud that I wanted to be a writer – read my work and tell me they like it. Cazenovia formed my sensibilities. Those impressionsstillinformmywriting. They always will.”

An excerpt from “The Taste of Your Name” will be appearing soon in the very first issue of EpistemicLiterary, afreeonline magazine. Campbell encourages readers to look for her short story Food is Love.

Vanity projects

To the editor:

Mark Olson appears to be living in the County Executive’s dream world when it comes to the aquarium.

Micron is coming to our community for many reasons: access to energy, plentiful water, cost of living, quality schools and billions in tax breaks. An aquarium for tourists provides no benefit to Micron and actually puts demands on the estimated 48 million gallons of water a day they will need. Let’s be honest, the aquarium is the county executive’s vanity project and stop trying to justify it by shouting Micron!

Onondaga County consistently generates over $330 million in sales tax every year. In 2020 when tourism was on hiatus due to the pandemic the county generated $365 million in sales tax. Tourism does not generate sales tax. We the residents of Onondaga County who live, work and shop in our communities are the source.

As for Destiny USA and COR, these businesses continually fail to deliver.

If the success of these businesses are dependent on an aquarium they would be funding it. The City of Syracuse gave this land to COR Development to clean up and develop the land. Yet nothing has been developed and it is still contaminated, but the county purchased this vacant, polluted land for over $1.7 million dollars

information and having caught up on my sleep, I again naively ventured into motherhood eight years later and produced a child who didn’t sleep through the night for four years. Yes, four years!

I was the perfect example of what sleep deprivation can do to a human being. If any remnant of competency lingered, it disappeared completely during this trial by wakefulness. Not a pretty sight at all. Old habits die hard and when the ear, nose and throat doc discovered and repaired the reason for our daughter’s wakefulness, I began to exhibit signs of intelligence again, but only briefly. The children were growing older.

I have come to the conclusion that there is an inverse relationship between a child’s age and a mother’s intelligence. As the years rolled on and each of my offspring grew and flourished, it was their mother who grew less and less knowledgeable.

What did I know about fashion, about computers, about food? I mean, who in their right mind would eat fresh fruit or high fiber bread or vegetables? Were they ashamed of someone who

without even an appraisal. Why should we build a 100% taxpayer funded aquarium for COR and Destiny to attract tourists to pad their profits?

An aquarium will not provide for families or protect children. According to the county’s own feasibility study it found that aquariums in the study required private donations to meet their budgets. Instead of providing revenue to their communities an aquarium requires a consistent influx of investment and volunteerism.

If Mark is so concerned with our quality of life and creating jobs he needs to start with fully staffing Onondaga County.

In 2009 there were 4,231 county positions. Last year there were only 2,927. As a county legislature Mark is in a position to bring back these jobs now, not later. Jobs that would bring security to families by performing lead abatement, increase capacity of our Health Department, Children & Family Services and other departments.

Enough of the vanity projects and empty words. This November, vote for Carrie Wood because she will listen to constituents, appropriate our tax dollars to the services our residents need and be a much needed check on the county executive.

The storm brought fierce rain and wind that damaged and closed roads, uprooted trees, flooded basements and impacted local events.

Trail Partnership Grant to create an electronic aid designed to make it easier to locate items in Lorenzo State Historic Site’s vast archive of historical photos, maps, letters, posters, and other documents.

The grant, which is sponsored by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY), was announced on July 28.

“The archives are a hidden treasure of information on Cazenovia, Central New York, and the history of the United States” said Lorenzo State Manager Michael Roets in an Aug. 3 press release. “And making the archive more accessible for residents, historians, and others has been a longstanding priority of mine.”

had no idea what booting up a computer meant? Who didn’t own an MP3 player? I saw myself though my children’s eyes, a pitiful example of an uninformed, hopelessly needy adult who needed help to set the clock in the VCR. My Phi Beta Kappa key started to corrode and I began to question how I had been able to make it this far in life without a major mishap. From cheering too loudly at soccer games to mentioning in public that one of my offspring had musical ability, to insisting that they wear coats during snowstorms, to thinking that adult children with their own houses would like to take the stuff they left in mine, I have committed just about every maternal faux pas there is and more. Then there is the clueless category that includes all of the current singers, bands and songs as well as 90 percent of the shows on television.

Then came grandchildren. At first, I was fun. Grandma knew things. They asked me questions and believed what I said. Games we played were fun. Coming to visit at our house was something they looked forward to. I tried to keep up, but that old inverse relationship between the age of children and the knowledgeability of adults

intervened and, once again, I am the uniformed, clueless one. I guess the fact that I have and use an Amazon Kindle is not the same as having and using a Nintendo Switch. They are polite about it, but the eye rolls and the half-smiles tell the story.

I still have flashes of the old know-it-all persona, but nature has intervened to make some of what I thought I knew, something I no longer know.

The “know-it-all” has been chastened by the life’s circle’s turnings. Truth be told, there are so many things that I once knew that have gone the way of forgetting. Last week I couldn’t remember what the former name of Tanzania was. Words slip away … they come back, but where do they go when I want them? I’ve mellowed. Why there are even days when I simply agree with someone rather than point out that I am, of course, right and they are, well … not.

You have completed only 62% of the questions to find out your Mental Golf Type. I don’t have enough space to list all of the questions. You must admit, these are interesting questions we should be able to answer about ourselves. If you are serious about learning your MGT, you can go to…mentalgolftype.com to complete the questionnaire. I did, and found out my MGT was “COMPETITIVE TEACHER”.

The following are the “16” Mental Golf Types: Optimist Manifester, Strategic Competitor, Competitive Teacher, Inventive Competitor, On Stage Performer, Friendly Competitor, Thrill Seeker, Competent Competitor, Free Flowing Competitor, Peaceful Warrior, Course Strategist, Tactical Mastermind, Serious Competitor, Expert Coach, Precision Machine and Adaptive Technician.

I believe Tiger Woods MGT was a “On Stage Performer”. Jack Nicklaus was a “Strategic Competitor”. Arnold Palmer…was an “Inventive Competitor”. Some of you will be able to identify your MGT from the above list before you complete the entire questionnaire. Who do you think you are?

Half way point

So many things in life are a matter of perspective and summer is no exception.

It seems like it was only a blink of an eye ago that we were celebrating Memorial Day and the Fourth of July and now it is August already.

This is the half way point of summer, before we know it, it will be Labor Day.

But here is where perspective comes into play.

It is all a matter of looking at the glass as half empty or half full, negatively or optimistically.

While it can be easy to think of this in some negative light, summer being half way over already and it seems like it has barely started, there is a lot of optimism when we look at it with the right eyes. Summer is only half way over; there is still plenty of time to enjoy it.

After a slow start to spring that saw cooler temperatures as well as several days with hazy, smoke filled skies from the wildfires in Canada, summer seemed tentative. Our area also saw some days of intense heat with warmer than average days and now as August begins, we are seeing cooler temperatures.

All of these swings can make it hard to plan your days, but no matter the weather our area has a bounty of events, activities and attraction to take advantage of.

The important thing is to make the time to enjoy it.

There are the unavoidable realities of life, our duties and responsibilities from work, to chores around the house and innumerable others.

But it is also important to remember that we all need to stop and take some time for the responsibilities we have to ourselves, our families and the other things we probably don’t give enough time and attention when we are caught in the day to day obligations of our lives.

But it seems summer is a time when many make a point to pay at least a little more attention to these important details.

There is that cliché of the long lazy days of summer, maybe it is the memory of summer vacations when we were younger, maybe it is the number of activities that correlate with the season, but whatever the reason, it seems this is a time when everyone wants to shake off some of their daily cares and spend a little time enjoying something special.

Take some time, use these weeks of summer that are still ahead and find what will make you happy.

We are fortunate to be surrounded by the bounty of nature in Central New York.

With numerous lakes, trails, nature sites and camping, there are innumerable opportunities to get outside.

For some it is as simple as a backyard fire and toasting marshmallows and making s’mores with the kids.

For others it may be taking in a ball game and having a hotdog. For others it will be a concert or the bigger events still to come like the New York State Fair.

But whatever it is, take the time to enjoy the long days of summer as much as you can and find the time to kick back and relax even for a little while.

From know-it-All to uninFormEd

No one likes a know-it-all, leastwise those of us who were raised to be just that. I speak from deep personal experience.

I am the oldest of four children and the recipient of my father’s directive to be a leader rather than a follower. My siblings fought hard against such hubris but somewhere along the line, either individually or in collusion, they let me think that I was the leader and one with superior skills. I mean, who could do the housework better than me, or the dishes or cook the evening meals or mow the lawn?

Any effort at these tasks by two of my siblings was carefully scrutinized by my hyper-critical eye, and if their work was poorly executed, I simply redid it. I can remember repeating that phrase, “If you want something done right…”

It was amazing, though, that my youngest sister, so poorly adapted to household work, could whip up a new outfit on the sewing machine in a trice or that my brother, all thumbs at just about anything around the house, could learn any musical instrument and start up several bands. Seems that one of the things that this know-it-all didn’t know was when she was being, what is the current word … played?

My other sister didn’t even try to do things poorly, she just hid out in the bathroom until I went to college. Amazingly, they survived their seeming lack of skills and have prospered in their own ways with homes that are organized and clean. But, as

the eldest, I still hold the scepter of know-it-all and have been known to Type A it through many an assignment. Most know-it-alls aren’t aware of their situation until they come in contact with another similarly-trained annoyance. And so it came to pass that I met up with not one but two of this genera. It seemed that no matter what I said, there was always a contradiction to be made, always a comment about how they had more experience, knew more people, had preferred and, of course, more effective ways of getting things done. One would even do my work for me. Even when they were dead wrong, they were right and could convince me that I had erred. That was a lesson to be learned! Enduring the dynamic of the paramount font of perfectionism is really a pain in the neck … only a lot lower in the anatomy. And how did I deal with this epiphany? I didn’t. I saved my ego by simply separating myself from them. I changed jobs. I continued smug in my know-itall world, until a higher power pointedly intervened.

God drew me up short with the ultimate antidote ... motherhood. Having children just about drained my psyche of any trace of belief in my sense of competency or control. I should have suspected this early on

From the CLA: Cazenovia Lake needs your help

We need your help preventing new invasive species from coming into Cazenovia Lake.

An invasive species, whether plant or animal, is a species new to an environment that can become overpopulated and extremely harmful to its new ecosystem. One example of this, one we are all familiar with, is Eurasian Milfoil.

We know the most common way a new invasive species can enter our lake is by way of boats, bait wells and especially boat trailers going from one body of water to another.

There are two new invasive species we are increasingly concerned about getting into our lake.

These species have been found already in bodies of water in Central New York and have been found to be extremely invasive.

The first and most concerning is Hydrilla.

This plant grows unchecked by native plants, grows to the surface choking waterways and is not responsive to the herbicides we currently use to control milfoil.

The second is the Gobie fish.

This bait fish has been inadvertently released into waterways from bilge or live wells and has been shown to significantly change the entire fish ecosystem of the affected water.

The Village and Town of Cazenovia have committed significant resources to provide an inspection station at Lakeside Park for boats and trailers entering our lake.

Lake stewards are on duty any time the launch site is open. Their entire goal is to prevent potential contamination of the lake.

There are, however, still too many entry points on the lake where inspection is not taking place.

The Cazenovia Lake Association is reaching out to implore people who might be using a non inspection site to use only the village launch.

This is the only protection we have for stopping the next invasive species Lakeside Park on East Lake Road in Cazenovia provides an inspection station for boats and a launch area.

Annual permits can be obtained at the village offices at 90 Albany St. during business hours and are free for village and town residents.

There is a fee for non-residents.

As residents and visitors to the lake we have a duty to protect our lake so that it continues to benefit all of us for years to come.

The Village of Cazenovia is now requiring all contractors who work from a boat or barge on the lake to obtain a permit and fill out an additional form that identifies the scope of work, length of the project, location and other pertinent data.

The contractors often use a trailered barge which is just as prone to carrying invasives as a recreational boat.

The boat launch is a privilege for all and any contractor that is uncooperative or disrespectful to our lake or personnel will have their permit revoked.

Residents should be mindful of this when hiring a waterfront contractor.

If you have questions, comments or concerns please contact the Cazenovia Lake Association at cazlake.org.

when nausea interrupted my plans in graduate school to become a world-renowned anthropologist, but that passed and, armed with books on childrearing, I mapped out how I would maintain my home, develop extraordinary culinary capabilities, take a few more graduate courses and become the model of young motherhood.

I even wrote these plans down, you know, to pass on to those not as well informed as I. I posted them on the door of what was to be the nursery.

God’s lesson revealed itself in all its power somewhere in the first hours of the first night after I brought my first born home from the hospital. There he was, my darling baby boy. Why weren’t the neighbors bringing gifts to celebrate his arrival? I lay my child, freshly bathed, changed and fed in his fashionably appointed crib, cleverly situated under his educational mobile. I smiled and began a lullaby that was interrupted by colicky screaming that lasted for three months. The section in Dr. Spock that dealt with colic was ragged in a few weeks, but not more so than the reader who was alternately stumbling around the house trying to implement her naïve plans for housekeeping while caring for a very unhappy baby or simply crying copious tears at her inadequacy.

I walked the floor for hours every night, rocked him, sang to him, tried all kinds of folk remedies recommended by older, more experienced mothers. I read somewhere that colicky in-

fants don’t cry when you use the vacuum. My floors were immaculate and my child continued to cry. We drove over the county roads at all hours of the night, child in the back seat, hoping that something we read about babies liking the rocking motion of the car would work. To this day, I associate some roads in the area with the hair-raising sound of a baby taken from his bed by his rookie parents, miserable in the back seat.

Nothing got done around the house. I tried, but beyond the vacuuming, dishes piled up in the sink, laundry was done on an emergency-only basis and I don’t think I combed my hair for weeks. At the end of six months, only one of the tasks that I had taped to the door of the nursery had been accomplished on a regular basis: vacuuming the floors.

Finally, exasperated beyond anything I could have imagined, I took the screaming child next door to my neighbor who was also my family doctor and held the child out to him saying, “I give up. He just won’t stop crying.” Doc Daly smiled, as those who are in the know often do, and said, “Well, I’ll bet he has a milk allergy. Try some soy formula and see what happens.”

Screaming child in tow, I raced to the store and bought Isomil. I spent the entire first night after his formula change checking my quiet, sleeping child to see if he was still alive. Equipped with all of this

For many students, the perfect school day might include classes on orienteering, myth busting, walking and snacking, lego robotics, making comic books, jewelry design, choreography, singing and baking “caramel crumble squares.”

This perfect dream was realized for about 100 participants in the summer’s “Discovery University” program held at Cazenovia High School and Middle School.

The program is held every year for graduates of third through sixth grades. Students in the Myth Busting class used science to test every questions: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? Can you tell the difference between Skittle flavors in a blind taste test?

“Everything starts to taste the same after five,” said one Skittle-eating scientist. Maureen Carroll and Patricia Chiarello, who both work for the school, run the weeklong program.

“At least 90-percent of kids come back for the next year,” Chiarello said.

Cazenovia is a gem of a historic village whose streets are lined with 18th and 19th century homes. Rarely do these homes come up for sale, especially the ones that are renovated, updated and fronting the main street through the village. Such, however, is the case with the historic Greek Revival-style home at 9 Albany St., also known as “White Lilacs.”

This 6,570-square-foot building on approximately .90 acres is located on land originally owned by Cazenovia founder John Lincklaen, with the original structure believed to have been built around 1815.

In 1833, the property was sold the John D. Ledyard, an agent of the Holland Land Company, to the president and directors of the Madison County Bank.

The building is Greek Revival architecture with a Federal-style influence. It is distinguished with four iconic pillars fronting the building (the largest in town), which interestingly, are made of solid logs – not pieced together as was most common at the time – with handcarved fluting.

The front of the house is brick and originally there was a wing on the northwest side.

The massive July 1 storm that hit Cazenovia may have been one month ago, but its effects are still being felt.

The Gorge Trail that runs from Clark Street in the village to Bingley Road in Fenner is still closed to hikers after suffering three washouts during the storm.

“Reach out for advice. Talk about what you would like to do. Be willing to open up and be receptive,” she said.

Warburton is concerned that young

people are despondent and distracted by their cell phones, but she has some advice to offer.

“I would really love it if young people knew there are opportunities out there. They should investigate when opportunities come up,” Warburton said.

While 20 years has moved quickly,

Lowe and Warburton are grateful for the support they have recevied from the community.

“We are really grateful to the community for a lot of support . . . It has been a gift in my life to experience all the people we’ve met,” Warburton said. “Twenty years has gone quickly but has brought magical

moments and has, hopefully, added many memories as families sit and gather around a table set on a Provencal tablecloth.”

winds were too much for me.”

BettyAnn Kram, a retired executive for INFICON, a multinational manufacturer of instrumentation, took time off from sailing because of an injury.

“When I was able to rig and launch my Sunfish once again, I felt everyone’s care and awareness of my new beginnings,” she said. “As it happened, when I tried to climb into my boat very near our launch area, I tipped it over and grabbed to hold on to it. I was fine, but I heard someone say, ‘Where’s BettyAnn?!’ and Eileen Lowe appeared immediately in the water beside me.”

For 92-year old Arlene Abend, a metalwork artist whose work has been exhibited at the Everson Museum, WOW is a tool for challenging gender norms.

Before joining WOW, Abend was crew for her ex-husband on a large sailboat. She

wasn’t allowed to make any decisions, but that changed during a regatta on Skaneateles Lake–they were in the lead, then the wind stopped.

Abend knew the captain needed to loosen the sails to catch as much wind as possible, so she told him just that. He got angry, she jumped ship (even though she couldn’t swim), and he got disqualified for not finishing with the crew he started with. Shortly thereafter, she filed for divorce.

“I found that I couldn’t go by [his] rules anymore or someone else’s decision . . . In my divorce, my husband got our large sailing boat, and I ended up with a little Sunfish. [With the WOWs] I could put my hand on the tiller, and I could be the skipper . . . And the people around me–who gave me a sense of tomorrow–[were] just beautiful,” Abend said.

One such beauty is Jean Doering, a WOW of 27 years and a Sunfish racer.

Having won the Spirit Award for her passion for sailing, she’s taught lots of WOWs how to sail. Doering didn’t start with a Sunfish though; she was a windsurfer who was “excited by its simplicity, sail, board, boom, and speed!” She joined WBYC with her husband Eugene in 1993; by 1996 she was intrigued with the WOWs.

“I hung around at 4 p.m. launching time when everyone rigged their boats and sailed away,” Doering said. “Our most senior WOW member, Pat Crosby, volunteered to take me on board. By the end of the season, I had bought my own boat and was hooked on sailing.” Then she tried racing.

“I [started] by hanging behind out of the way of the ferocious competitors,” she said. “I soon got tired of being behind the fleet, so I got a new boat with a racing rig, and started to catch up, and then to overtake!”

New members are always welcome.

“As a recent member of WOW, I am so excited to join this wonderful group of women, and push myself to learn a new skill,” Kathleen Muldoon, who joined the group this summer, said,

“I love the way this group encourages women to sail,” said Ruth Bates, who has been in a leadership role for the WOWs for six years and sailing for over 50 years.

As a co-captain with Graham, she leads drills such as planned capsizing and knot tying, skills that are crucial to feel confident on the water.

But the WOWs aren’t just about sailing; lots of women spend Wednesday evenings watching the sunset over the lake and enjoying hors d’oeuvres together.

“Our social hour is a wonderful time to share and create friendships,” Graham said. “I would say that every one of us cherishes their WOW experience.”

Community Memorial golf tournament held

The Community Memorial Foundation hosted the seventh annual Mike Martin Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Community Memorial Hospital on Monday, July 31.

The proceeds from the competition and supporting sponsors are again earmarked for the capital project currently underway at Community Memorial Hospital, transforming more than half the facility as the organization just surpassed its 70th anniversary.

One hundred thirty-two golfers attended the event, hosted at the beautiful and challenging Seven Oaks Golf Course of Colgate University in Hamilton.

With early sun and a few morning showers, the players teed off after a brief welcome at noon. The weather cleared, and after the golfers completed their game, an awards dinner was hosted at the Hamilton Inn on Lake Moraine Road. Four teams were awarded: first place went to Team Joe Caprio; second went to Team FustCharles; third was awarded

This event was named to remember a long-time and dedicated volunteer, Mike Martin, who was sadly lost to the community in October 2016.

Deeply committed to the Hamilton area, Martin served on the board of the Community Memorial Foundation and chaired the tournament in its very successful inaugural year.

The tournament recognizes his leadership skills, commitment to the hospital and the local community, and wonderful personality.

Martin, a 1964 graduate of Rome Free Academy and Colgate University class of 1969, served on several local committees spearheading economic initiatives and was an active volunteer for Colgate University as trustee and president of the Alumni Council.

The event raised more than $109,000 and was supported by The Hayner Hoyt Corporation as Tournament Sponsor, SCP Health as Presenting, BPAS as Course Sponsor and NBT Bank as Contest Sponsor. Cazenovia, Chittenango get NYSPHSAA honors

For their overall work during the 202223 school year, the athletic programs at Cazenovia and Chittenango High School were both named as “Schools of Excellence” by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

In order to receive this, both schools needed to have 75 percent of their varsity teams achieve NYSPHSAA’s Scholar-Athlete award during their respective seasons.

In Cazenovia’s case, this means at least 17 of its 22 varsity squads were recognized, while at Chittenango 15 of its 20 varsity teams reached that same level.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Nessa Barrett,” she said.

She is eagerly awaiting the release of her single “Still Want It.”

The project originated as an assignment for one of her Berklee classes.

The song reflects on some of the aspects of Gara’s own life, like her start in music while singing on the New York subway as a child, to the challenges she faced when she left her hometown as a young adult.

“I didn’t realize how hard it would be to chase my dreams alone,” she said, reminiscing about her family in Cazenovia who would always support her, the special spots familiar to her, and the closeness of her family.

The adjustment was tough.

“You don’t know how much your identity is shaped by where you’re from until you leave,”

But while it has been a challenge, she is pushing through and feels she has grown a lot as a person since moving to California.

Gara will be graduating with her master’s degree in December, and hopes to focus on writing songs for other artists.

“I think of myself as a story articulator and lyric bedazzler for artists,” she said. “Songwriting has been a pillar of light for me and has gotten me through the hardest of times, so it is my joy to share that sunshine with other artists.”

She also loves releasing songs for herself and hopes to develop her own individual career down the line.

Right now, Gara hopes her new single serves as an inspiration to other young adults who are getting started in life and going after what they want, letting them know that they are not alone if they do struggle.

“I hope this song resonates with the many

twenty-somethings who are chasing a dream and it hasn’t been easy,” she said. “I can’t compare
