DDE spreads its wings with final art project By Meghan Piper Liverpool School Information Officer

Liverpool Schools

With the help of Willow Field Elementary retired art teacher Deb Walsh, Donlin Drive Elementary art teacher Patricia Bangson and DDE students, staff and families created a ceramic mural.

Donlin Drive Elementary students, staff and families recently completed one last art installation as a kindergarten through sixth-grade community. As part of the Liverpool Central School District’s Education 2020 initiative, DDE will be reconfigured as a K-2 school this fall. To commemorate the end of an era, DDE art teacher Patricia Bangson wanted as many community members as possible to leave a piece of themselves behind as they spread their wings for new adventures. With the help of Willow Field Elementary retired art teacher Deb Walsh, the school was able to create an interactive ceramic mural made up of nearly 600 individual pieces.

Participants were asked to decorate a feather that showcased what DDE has meant to them over the years. The mural took approximately one week to build, one week to glaze and one week to install in the corridor between the main office and the cafeteria. The finished product formed a colorful set of wings with the words “We give our children roots to grow and wings to soar.” “It’s what we do here at Donlin Drive,” Bangson said. “We get kids ready for the future.” Upon its completion, DDE students and staff happily posed for pictures in front of the mural. A postcard of each photo was sent home as a keepsake. “They know exactly where their piece is,” Bangson noted. “They are proud of it and are excited to be a part of it.”

Fulton author Jim Farfaglia, shown here at a book reading in 2015, will present on several local history topics at the Aug. 21 open house of the Clay Historical Association. Local history author Jim Farfaglia will present a program about his various book topics at the Clay Historical Association’s monthly open house. The event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at Clay Historical Park (4939 Route 31, Clay). Farfaglia’s books have covered memorable events such as the Blizzard of ’66 and its impact on Central New York; the Nestlé factory in Fulton, for decades the largest chocolate-making facility in North America; the muck farms of Oswego County, one of the few places in the world where this organic-rich method of farming takes place; and the Oswego County Search and Rescue Team, the first professional volunteer search team in the Eastern United States. “I select topics for my books that are not only unique to Central New York but will also evoke rich memories,” said Farfaglia, a resident of Ful-

ton. “In the case of the Blizzard of ’66, I interviewed 200 people who managed their way through the storm. With the Nestlé book, I talked to workers from every department that produced the one million pounds of product produced daily during the factory’s heyday. I research my books’ topics for accuracy, of course, but equally important to me is to hear from those who know my subject firsthand.” Farfaglia illustrates his books with photographs that also tell a topic’s story. During his Clay Historical Association presentation he will share a slideshow showcasing the blizzard’s impact, the art of chocolate-making, search and rescue team efforts and farming on muck land. The program will also include the opportunity for questions and comments from the audience. “I look forward to spending time with the Clay Historical Clay l Page 15

After postponing its summer film festival, the American High film company instead scheduled a fifth anniversary celebration for the same weekend. Axelle Azoulay, who was codirector of the film fest, is now directing the outdoor birthday party scheduled for all-day Saturday, Aug. 20, on the baseball field behind the American High building at 800 Fourth St. “The event will include many outdoor fun activities, games, local food trucks and of course the option to dunk American High executives and others,” Azoulay wrote in a recent email. “The outdoor field day will be followed by a screening of one of our films in our auditorium, including a Q&A.” Tours of the company’s Academy at Syracuse Studios will be conducted throughout the day. American High is expected to shoot another comedy here this summer, but has yet to release details about the film or its stars.

Israeli-born actor/producer Azoulay is co-directing the Aug. 20 event along with Ana Olano, who has worked as an assistant to CEO Garelick. “While the primary goal of the event is American High’s fifth birthday and a big celebration and show of appreciation of our community, it will also function as a fundraiser for our first film festival which is now set for August 2023,” Azoulay wrote. All village residents are invited to attend the free-admission anniversary festival on Aug. 20.
