CAVAC seeks volunteer ambulance Women’s full impact self-defense drivers, crew coordinators training scheduled for July By kate Hill Staff Writer

The Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps (CAVAC) is currently seeking additional volunteer members.

The local ambulance service relies on volunteer drivers, crew coordinators, EMTs and general members, as well as paid professional paramedics. High school student corps members also support CAVAC’s operations.

For 48 years, the organization has served the Cazenovia area not only through emergency services, but also through the short-term loaning of medical equipment, such as crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs. Additionally, one member is certified to install or check children’s car seats. This service can be arranged by calling 315655-9798.

Cazenovia native earns distinguished service award

T

he American Dairy Science Association recently announced David Barbano as the 2022 recipient of the ADSA Distinguished Service Award.

The award was presented on Sunday, June 20 during the opening session at the ADSA Annual Meeting in Kansas City, Missouri.

The ADSA Distinguished Service Award was created to recognize unusually outstanding and consistent contributions to the welfare of the dairy industry, either directly or indirectly. The award is based on a broad, even nonscientific, contribution. Thus, outstanding achievements by those in industry, public administration, or academic administration shall qualify.

The contribution may be national or international. The ADSA Distinguished Service Award is not for ADSA accomplishments. The winner must have fulfilled as of Jan. 1 of the year of the award the contributions to the welfare

Established in 1971, Model Mugging Self-Defense training emphasizes personal safety and overcoming fears of assault through “role model mastery.”

During simulated assaults, participants are taught to use their full strength and power to fight back against a fully padded and specially trained instructor, referred to as a “mugger.”

According to the Model Mugging website, the course content and instruction are modeled upon practical and proven methods for how women can successfully defend themselves against common assault scenarios.

“Through repetition, we are actually teaching our bodies what to do in the event of an attack,” said Tobin, who will be assisting with the course. “It is not just an intellectual exercise; it becomes muscle memory. As a protective measure,

I am 30 years away from my training and I still remember the series of ‘strikes’ in the order I was taught, and I am confident that my body would kick into gear if needed.”

Tobin participated in a Model Mugging class when she was 23 and just starting to recover from a sexual assault.

“It was a huge part of feeling safer in the world and reclaiming my own power,” she said.

Now that her daughters are 16 and 18 years old, she hopes to equip them with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves.

“Model Mugging is one facet of what I want them to know as young women out in the world,” she said. “. . . I work primarily with trauma survivors, and I know a lot of women and girls don’t always feel

physically safe out on their own.”

While her daughters are participating in the course, Tobin will be offering support to any participants who may become overwhelmed during the training.

Mark Vinci, the director of Model Mugging, will be traveling from the west coast to teach the course.

Vinci said one of the most rewarding parts of training Model Mugging participants is watching their fear of being immobilized transform into an energy source that can be used constructively, rather than destructively.

“We change lives in two days,” he said.

According to Vinci, the trainings have helped many survivors to “change the endings” by increasing their viable options when faced with danger and helping them discover strengths they never knew they had.

“For those that are fortunate enough not to have been [assaulted], it might change their outlook and their awareness of what the criminal does, how he does it, [and] why he’s doing it,” Vinci added.

Barbano is professor of food science and director of the Northeast Dairy Foods Research Center and has made outstanding contributions to the advancement of food science and the dairy industry in the areas of milk chemistry; analytical methods for milk and dairy products; dairy herd management milk testing for de novo, mixed, and preformed fatty acids; membrane filtration of milk and whey; and dairy product manufacturing technology over four decades in his research, extension, and teaching programs.

Multiple kayak thefts reported in Cazenovia By kate Hill Staff Writer

Recently, the Cazenovia Police Department has been alerted to four kayak thefts from the lakefront area.

On June 29, Chief of Police Michael Hayes reported that none of the

boats had been recovered.

He also noted that some of the kayaks had been taken from the Lakeland and Lakeside Park kayak/canoe racks with their chains cut.

According to the chief, the best thing for people to do going forward is to

be vigilant.

“Say something when you see it, not two or three days later,” he said. “People are afraid to ‘bother us’ by calling, [but] we like to be proactive. Better it be nothing than something and we can’t do anything about it.”

The police department also has kayak identification stickers available at the village office for anyone who needs them.

“Having the make, model, color, and serial number helps to identify the kayak, and we can also send a ‘hot file’ out statewide in case it is found or

located in a pawn shop,” said Hayes.

Anyone with information regarding the thefts can call the police office at 315-655-3276 or email chiefhayes@windstream.net. If a theft is in progress, dial 911, as an officer is not always present in the office.

OBITUARIES John R. Durfee, 80

Retired Caz school transportation supervisor John R. Durfee, 80, who retired as transportation supervisor from the Cazenovia Central School District, died Saturday, June 25, 2022. He was born June 21, 1942, (the longest day of the year) to Franklin E. and Ellie Ryan Durfee and was a graduate of Cazenovia High School in 1960.

John began working at the age of 10 peddling newspapers for his uncle, John F. Ryan. In 1961 he joined the Hook & Ladder Company of the Cazenovia Fire Department working his way through the ranks and was named Chief in 1984 and 1985.

Also in 1961, he started barbering in DeWitt and Manlius until the hippies came along and ended his career. In 1967 John bought out Bill Rivenburg’s trucking business.

He was employed as a bus driver in 1969 with the Cazenovia Central School District. In 1974, John was hired as the transportation supervisor for the Onondaga Central School and in 1976 the transportation supervisor at the Cazenovia Central School District where he retired in 2004 after 36 years of service.

In 1975, John bought into a camp in Forestport, N.Y., along with Don Dorrance and Roger Stearns.

John’s greatest pleasure was the Cazenovia Fire Department of which he is a life member. He also enjoyed bowling and snowmobiling both in Cazenovia and

Forestport but most of all building relationships and camping with his friends from Erieville.

John also enjoyed working in his shop and doing scratch-off lottery tickets with two of his close friends, John Haley and Buddy Blair. John was very close to his family, talking to them either in person or by phone with his daughter, Susan every day and son’s Tim and Tom at least once a week.

John married his high school sweetheart, Donna L. Farr in 1962 at St. James Church in Cazenovia only to lose her at the early age of 50 in 1995.

John is survived by his daughter, Susan (Michael Babel) Durfee Szewczyk of Morrisville; his twin son’s Thomas J. Durfee of Cazenovia and Timothy M. (Dawn Cottet) Durfee of Chittenango; his soulmate, Cathy R. Basic of Cazenovia; grandsons, Cole (Caitlin Bennett) Szewczyk, Toby (Lauren Kellum) Szewczyk both of Morrisville, Kyle R. (Sierra Woods) Durfee of Cazenovia; his granddaughters, Kaitlyn (Justin) Thayer of Cazenovia and Gabby Durfee of Chittenango; his great grandchildren, Braydon, Jack and Sophie Thayer and Greyson Durfee; his sister, Mary (John) Colligan of Cazenovia; sisters-in-law, Barb Clements of Fenner and Maureen Robinson of Cortland; his niece, Katie (Dennis) Pynn of Rochester and by his nephews, Scott (Ann) Clements of New Woodstock and Chris (Pam) Clements of Cazenovia.

Francis J. Long, 91, of Morrisville, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at his home.

He was born in Buffalo and had retired as the security officer at Hutchings Center in Syracuse.

He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, was a Boy Scout leader, served as Commander and a member of Post 88 American Legion in Cazenovia and was a member of the Cazenovia Country Club.

Surviving: daughters Jill Long Higgins of Morrisville, Karen Duidry of Fair Oaks, TX, Barbara Hart of Helotes, TX, and Brenda Thompson of Austin, TX;son Kevin Long of Austin, TX. He was predeceased by his wife Carole and son Kim. A service will be held at a later date.

Watch the heat

This year spring seemed to take its time settling in, at least in terms of the warmer weather we usually expect as we dealt with many chilly and rainy days through April and May. As June headed into July we saw a few days of much more intense summer heat. And we saw temperatures that were more moderate, what some would call comfortable. These days have been mixed with days of more intense heat. For some this was a very welcome warming up and offered a good chance to get out and go swimming, visit one of the many lakes we are fortunate to have near by or any number of other activities.

And, as the old saying about Central New York weather goes, it can change at any time, so what the rest of the summer might be like is almost anyone’s guess.

But it is likely there will be plenty of more warm days in the next few months and with that in mind there are some things everyone should keep in mind for their own health and safety as well as those around them.

According to the American Heart Association as the temperature rises, so can your risk for suffering health issues like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Doctors recommend using good judgment when it comes to activities outside in the heat, and that you stay hydrated.

The Heart Association recommends that during hot days everyone keep a few guidelines in mind.

According to the Heart Association it is best to avoid the outdoors in the early afternoon, about noon to 3 p.m., because the sun is usually at its strongest, putting you at higher risk for heat-related illnesses.

Dressing for the heat is also important.

According to the Heart Association most people probably sweat the most in their shoes, so choose well-ventilated shoes and look for socks that repel perspiration. Foot powders and antiperspirants can also help with sweat.

It is also recommended that people wear lightweight, light-colored clothing in breathable fabrics such as cotton, or a newer fabric that repels sweat. Add a hat and/ or sunglasses. Before you get started, apply a water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 15, and reapply it every two hours.

Staying hydrated is also vitally important.

It I recommended that people drink a few cups of water before, during and after exercise and avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages which can lead to dehydration.

If you are outside, take regular breaks and find a shady or cool place to rest and rehydrate if possible.

If you do have heart or other medical concerns, follow your doctor’s recommendations.

It is also important to know the signs of when you are reaching a point of being too hot.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include, headaches, heavy sweating, cold, moist skin, dizziness or fainting (syncope), a weak and rapid pulse, muscle cramps, fast, shallow breathing and nausea, vomiting or both.

If you experience these symptoms, move to a cooler place, stop exercising and cool down immediately by dousing yourself with cold water and rehydrating. You may need to seek medical attention.

Heat stroke includes symptoms like warm, dry skin with no sweating, strong and rapid pulse, confusion and/or unconsciousness, high fever, throbbing headaches and nausea, vomiting or both.

If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention right away.

And if you are traveling, keep in mind children, older individuals and pets that may be in the vehicle with you.

If possible it is best to leave pets at home.

As temperatures can soar in a parked car, even with the windows open or tinted windows, it is best to leave anyone who might not want to or be able to leave the car at home as well for their own safety.

Change of sink The cost of gas has made vacationing a challenge.

Heck, it’s made buying a cucumber a challenge, but I picked up a magazine the other day that had a list of ways that one could cut back on the cost of driving and so - this column. Among the suggestions was staying home and pretending that the back yard was someplace else, like, say the Grand Canyon, the Serengeti or a rock concert at the amp.

Of course, what your yard can be varies with its size, your imagination and the generosity of you neighbors.

Instead of traveling to some far-off place, the article suggests a pitched tent and ordering in. I am not too keen on the “tent thing,” having memories of the army surplus tent in my childhood backyard. The tent was GI green and spent most summers as the home of wasps and other less-attractive backyard vermin. The ordering-in part is something that got my attention. I liked that suggestion.

In the same article, which was probably written by a male, the cost of lodging could be cut by renting a unit that included a kitchen.

You do know what that means, don’t you? The family will swim and snorkel, etc., while the live-in maid

cleans up after and cooks for everyone. Maybe, if she is lucky, she can steal a few minutes to read a chapter or two in a book about another woman who is being romanced by a guy with a castle … and wondering how long it takes to clean a castle.

For most of my adult life, vacations meant basically a change of sink. When the kids were small and we traveled to Florida to visit my Mom, I did the packing, ordered the tickets, got everyone together and on time and took over all on board negotiations regarding seats, snacks and behavior.

While in Florida, I certainly couldn’t let my mother wait on us, so I helped with the housework, did most of the cooking and washing up and, after washing the family’s clothing, hung it to dry on the line in my mother’s back yard. I kept asking, “Am I having fun yet?” And as I pondered my state of mind, the rest of the family was doing something else. I can’t remember what. Shopping, swimming, laying around getting a tan? When we went to Disney World … a laugh riot of a day … 90 miles there and back and a race to get in as many rides as possible, I carried the food in my backpack. Thank God

you could rent strollers at the Magic Kingdom. They are wonderful for cranky kids and crankier mothers.

There was the time that we decided to stay over on the grounds at Disney World. I had called ahead and arranged for accommodations in one of the modestly-priced facilities.

I think it was called Dixie Landings. We arrived very early in the morning and requested a late check-in because we were heading to the theme parks.

The kids were older.

They could walk, talk and could carry their own food by now. They also had jobs and had disposable cash to spend. And so, we were off.

We returned after 10 p.m. to find that our Dixie Landings reservation had been given away, but, true to Disney hospitality, we were escorted to an enormous house hugging the golf course. It had three bedrooms, a living room, a lanai, bicycles, tennis rackets, a stocked refrigerator, a lovely washer dryer and an iron. Why do I tell you about the latter? Am I not the most awful example of Pavlovian learning ever? I took everyone’s clothes that they wore that day, washed, dried and then ironed them.

I was nuts! What was I trying to prove?

Now, ask me what a vacation should look like? Well, first of all there should be no kitchens, no washer-dryers, no ironing apparatus within eyeshot. All meals must be cooked by someone else and delivered to my table, my lounge chair or my cabana along with copious amounts of wine or some such relaxing type of beverage. There will be interesting shops, water for swimming (for other people, my bathing suit days are gone forever,) places to nap and lots of music. By music I mean the kind that normal adult people can hum or sing along to. There should be massages and manicures available. A golf course should be nearby so that my spouse has something to do and the only reading materials should be trashy novels and decorating magazines. If I don’t want to do anything but veg, so be it.

To all young mothers who are contemplating the tent in the back yard thing: make sure about the ordering-in part. But, then, truly, I’d find another way to save on gas.

Spanky wants to be your little rascal

This little guy first came to the shelter as part of a hoarding case several years ago. He was happily adopted for several years, but found himself back at the shelter when his family was no longer able to care for him.

Spanky was well-loved but sheltered and somewhat indulged; for example, he was given hot dogs and leftovers, never dog food, and he was not used to being on a leash. Spanky has come a long way in a short time: he’s wearing a leash, eating dog food (wet food, at least!), and is starting to build a circle of friends at the shelter. Spanky is 9 years old and would do best in a quiet home with no children and a patient adopter who will give him the time he needs to settle in.

He’s wary of new people, but once he’s comfortable with you, he’s quite charming. Spanky is hoping his search for a new home will end very soon. Right up to the final seconds, you figured the Tampa Bay Lightning Random would pull it out.

Thoughts For nearly three years, it’s how Phil Blackwell it always went in the NHL playoffs.

Whatever predicament the Bolts found itself facing, it would battle out of it, ultimately winning more games than its challengers and twice hoisting sports’ coolest trophy.

So as Game 6 of this particular championship series wound down, and Tampa Bay trailed Colorado 2-1, the expectation, even among the most optimistic of Avalanche fans, was to have a late goal, the game extended, the quest to take down the Lightning prolonged, perhaps to a Game 7.

Alas, it did not happen. Sticks, helmets and gloves went in the air and joyous Colorado players celebrated, the Stanley Cup secured in the most satisfying manner possible – on the road, against the reigning champs seeking a three-peat.

Now the Avs might keep it going. It’s a team with plenty of young talent like Nathan McKinnon and playoff MVP Cale Makar, and its exciting brand of hockey might have already ushered in a new era where scoring lots of goals takes priority over suffocating defense.

Yet no one should discount what Tampa Bay nearly pulled off.

All told, the Bolts won 11 consecutive playoff series, and nearly a 12th, the closest anyone has come in the salary cap era to what the New York Islanders did in the early 1980s, when it claimed the Cup four years in a row.

Those Islanders also managed 19 straight series victories, a mark that seems more untouchable as the years and decades pass.

To go all the way, NHL teams have to play around 100 games, regular and post-season, and that kind of streak adds a full extra season to the toll already taken.

Yet Tampa Bay got close to that rare air, and one wonders if this finals defeat was the end of a prolonged run at the top for the Lightning.

It all dates back to 2015, when the Bolts got to the finals, only to get stopped by Chicago. Twice in the three years that followed, Tampa Bay got to Game 7 of a conference final, only to get stopped by two eventual champs, Pittsburgh and Washington.

The real spark, though, was that 2019 season where Tampa Bay had one of the best regular seasons in NHL history – then got swept in the first round by Columbus, a stunning occurrence that would have sank lesser teams.

Alas, the Lightning channeled the pain and found atonement.

By far, the most important game of this entire long run was the first game against the Blue Jackets in the 2020 playoff bubble, a five-overtime epic won by Brayden Point’s goal.

Most of four rounds remained, but you could sense, then and there, that the ghosts were shed.

What followed was seeing the Lightning artfully skirt the salary cap and count on a strong core of players – Point, Nikita Kucherov, Ryan McDonagh, Andre Vasilevskiy, Steven Stamkos – along with steady coaching from Jon Cooper and his staff, plus a strong minor-league system that included the big contributions of former Syracuse Crunch players.

They played just the kind of hockey that has worked in the post-season for generations – opportunistic on offense, stingy on defense, the great work in goal by Vasilevskiy a constant anchor.

Even this season, when far from a top seed, no one dared count out the Bolts. Not when it was down 3-2 to star-crossed Toronto. Not when the New York Rangers took the first two games of the conference final. And even not when Colorado dominated Game 2 of the finals 7-0.

The cliché of a championship team carrying an indomitable spirit exists because plenty of truth is behind it. Such was the case with these Tampa Bay Lightning, who seemed poised to erase a 3-1 finals deficit the way no team had in recent NHL finals lore.

It took the Avalanche essentially copying the grind-it-out style that suited the Bolts so well to close out the final game of its Cup run.

Just like in 2021, when Lord Stanley’s hardware got handed out, it was done in Tampa. Only it was the visitors skating the big prize around, with many Lightning fans staying around to capture the moment. Thanks to what the home team accomplished, they knew the feeling well.

To the editor: Once again, our historic little village and peaceful neighborhoods are threatened with the proposed development of a big-box Hannaford’s supermarket at the former Accurate Die/OBG site at 547 E. Genesee St. Once again, it is time for us citizens to speak out against this totally unsuitable project so as to preserve the quality of life we cherish. Please join me in attending the village planning board’s next meeting on Monday July 11 and/or submitting comments for that meeting.

The proposed supermarket would generate so much increased traffic on E. Genesee St. (Rte. 5) that the road would have to be widened and a traffic signal would have to be installed next to the post office. That’s just for starters, because traffic congestion would most likely still persist, and a new problem accessing the post office would be created.

If our village government approved the supermarket development, at the same time it would automatically be signing off on whatever so-called “improvements to Rte. 5 the NYS Department of Transportation wants to make.

Or our village government can simply do what it should have done years ago: just say no to overdevelopment of the site. It should only allow more modest redevelopment that will not generate more traffic than E. Genesee St. can handle.

Let’s remember the tortured history

of NYC investor Tomer Slutzky’s campaign to overdevelop this contaminated site so as to enrich himself at the citizens’ expense. First, beginning in 2014, he and his associates wanted to build a huge apartment complex at the site, but they withdrew their applications when informed they must comply with the NY State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA). Then Slutzky et. al. again proposed a huge apartment complex, combined with commercial uses, which was rightly disapproved by the village board of trustees in 2019 because of the severe detrimental impacts the project would have.

A month later, Slutzky et. al. applied for village approval of a mixed-use development centered around a 57,000 s.f.

Hannaford’s supermarket. When the village planning board rightly determined that SEQRA requires the applicant to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS), Slutzky et.al. again refused to comply and withdrew their applications instead. Most recently, last November, they submitted new applications for the same 57,000 s.f. Hannaford’s supermarket.

We’ve been through this too many times already. Once again, Slutzky et.al. must be required to prepare an EIS as required by SEQRA. Unless they are finally ready to be reasonable and submit a suitable redevelopment proposal.

Cazenovia tennis star Hal McGrath, who was inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, welcomed Beezie Madden into the hall on June 17.

McGrath read a long list of her accomplishments and noted that she will be the first equestrian ever inducted into the local HOF. McGrath, who lives on Old Farms Lane in Cazenovia, is a board member of the Syracuse Sports HOF and the Syracuse Sports Corporation. His glory days on the tennis courts began at Nottingham High School when he won the New York State Boys Singles Championship in 1944.

In his freshman year at Syracuse University, McGrath won the 1951 Easter Intercollegiate championship, was ranked 10th nationally, and The Herald-Journal named him the Central New York Athlete of the Year.

The tantalizing smell of hotdogs and hamburgers, the thirst for a good soda pop and the summertime feel of a hotdog stand have returned to Cazenovia at the corner of Kinney Drugs and M&T Bank with the June opening of the Lincklaen House food cart.

“We wanted to bring back what had been there for years,” said Mary Margaret Kuper, co-owner of the Lincklaen House.

“Cazenovia used to have hot dog stands and nobody else was doing it. We checked with Juniors and they weren’t prepared so we decided to go ahead with it.”

So far, the cart is getting positive reaction from the public, with between 50 and 70 customers stopping by for lunch every day, she said.

6 years ago – July 6, 2016 As a way of giving back to the commu-

nity for 40 years of support, members of the Lorenzo Driving Competition have cleaned three overgrown historic horse troughs around Cazenovia and planted them with flowers.

“They were hidden and abandoned,” said Weese Sullivan Morse, who serves on the show committee. The troughs – located along East Lake Road and No. 9 Road, and tucked into the back of the Lorenzo State Historic Site – were scarcely visible behind the dense thatch of weeds that had grown up over the years.

Now, each is surrounded by a neatlyclipped fringe of green and brimming with pink impatients.

“They are so beautiful, and a huge part of Cazenovia’s history,” Sullivan Moore said.

The oldest of the restored troughs is dated 1866, a reminder of the days when transportation meant four hooves and a whip, instead of four wheels and a gas pedal.

Cazenovians all know that their town is a special place that resonates with wonder and attraction to those who do not live there.

Through the years, Caz has been named one of the coolest small towns in America.

In December 2014 an anchor on The Today Show visited and said, “I feel like I walked into a Christmas card here in Cazenovia, New York.”

Recently, Cazenovia got another compliment as a great place in the country when it was listed as one of the “20 Small Towns in American That Are Stuck in Time” in the msn.com travel section.

“Visiting is like hopping in a time machine. Instead of visiting that hotspot everyone’s already seen on Instagram or been to before, take a trip back in time. Small town America is thriving, and these destinations prove why – they’re full of history, unique culture and interesting people to meet,” according to the story published on June 15.

New Woodstock library features artist’s work Focus of Pamela Vogan Lynch is on developing watercolor diversity

amela Vogan Lynch has been drawing and painting since she was very young. Her passion for art has only increased over

time.

Vogan enjoys working in a variety of art media to include: acrylics, pastels, oils, mixed media, pen and ink, graphite, collage, printmaking, watercolor, jewelry, and glass.

For the past several years her focus has been on developing her watercolor versatility.

Her favorite subjects include animals, people, and personally meaningful still life arrangements.

The Pam Lynch show is the fourth in a series of six art exhibits at the New Woodstock Free Library gallery in 2022.

The PGA tour vs LIV golf…

Let’s face it ladies and gentlemen, this rivalry didn’t start a few weeks ago. It didn’t start a few months ago or even last year. The rumors and the threat of a new golf league clearly started two years ago. PGA TOUR commissioner Jay Monaghan knew about it but decided to wait until two weeks ago to finally announce his “new” plans to share more money with his PGA TOUR players.

Too late Jay! You blew it two years ago when you decided to remain silent. You gave your opponents the opportunity to gain traction by handing them the biggest weapon anyone can have in a “Battle for Credibility” and “Financial Success”…TIME !!! You might even remember that Mr. Monaghan announced a new television rights deal in 2020 that would help in “securing $12 billion in revenue through 2030”. He went on to say that the “strength, security and foundation of the PGA Tour has never been stronger, so that’s what we’re focused on and that we have regulations in place that allows us to protect the interests of our media partners, our sponsors and all of our constituents and if we got to that point in time, we would take measures to vigilantly protect this business model”. This sounds pretty cocky and arrogant to me without “officially” announcing their little “secret”…the Player Impact Program which would have benefited some of the more popular players on the PGA Tour. Their little $40 million “secret” was leaked later in 2020 but it still didn’t change the minds of “Big Phil” Michelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson or Brooks Koepka…they left anyway.

Let’s go back to that day in 2020 when Mr. Monaghan announced that he had secured $12 billion (a BIG “B”) in revenue through 2030. ”WHAT IF”…he also announced at that press conference what he said two weeks ago…

1. The Comcast Business Program would be rewarding the top 10 in the FedEx standings through the Wyndham Championship and it would be worth $70 million to the PGA Tour players.

2. The total purse for the Sentry Tournament of Champions would increase to…….. $15 million.

3. The total purse for the Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and Memorial Tournaments would increase from $12million to $20million.

Perry Noun is the former executive director of the Northeastern NY PGA as well as a competitive amateur golfer and winner of the New York State Super Senior Amateur Championship.

4. And the same for the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship…. from $12million to $20million.

5. The Players Championship will go from $20million to $25million.

7. There will be “guaranteed money” to be made if you earn your way there.

And…”WHAT IF”…he had also said two years ago, what he finally said two weeks ago… A long way of saying I want every single player on the PGA Tour to make more money, and that’s what I am going to focus on. There’s more to come on that front”.

How do you believe the Tour players would have responded to Mr.Monaghan two years ago, if they had heard it then, instead of two weeks ago? I have a strong suspicion they would have welcomed his announcements with open arms and cheered loudly at the increased purses at the events mentioned above. It would have been a dream come true for the Tour players who are good enough to be playing on the PGA Tour but struggle to make ends meet because they are not one of the elite players. I can only speculate what the response would have been from Greg Norman, the, outspoken, controversial spokesperson for the new Liv Golf League.

The LIV Golf League started a war with the PGA Tour two years ago. It continues today and probably won’t be over anytime soon.

I look at golf wars this way…every war has 18 battles. You only have to win 10 battles to declare victory. I have no idea who is going to win this war, maybe the battle count will be halved…9-9. I can, however, tell you who the biggest beneficiaries of this war will be…

THE PLAYERS…and THE FANS...and that’s a good thing.

Eighteen cadets graduate from Caz College Police Academy

Cazenovia College’s Pre-Employment Phase One Police Academy celebrated the graduation of the class of 2022 on June 24.

The 18th annual ceremony for 18 cadets will be held at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Cazenovia.

For the guest speaker, the cadets selected Thomas Engelemann, retired investigator for the Village of Cazenovia Police Department and former director of the Cazenovia College Phase One Police Academy.

Englemann began his career as a military police officer with the U.S. Army and then went on to serve as a police officer and firearms instructor with the Nassau County Police Department retiring after 20 years of service. After retiring from Nassau County Police Department, Engelmann served 19 years as an investigator with the Village of Cazenovia police department and 10 years as director of campus safety for Cazenovia College.

This class began their training on Sept. 14, 2021, and successfully completed the Academy’s ten-month program earning a Phase One certificate. Cadets also had the option to earn 18 undergraduate college credits and a certificate in Law Enforcement along with the Phase Once certificate at no additional charge.

“The Phase One program is an intensive format requiring students to pass over 40 topical areas including criminal law, investigation, patrol and procedures, vehicle operations, traffic, emergency management, first aid, professionalism and ethics, physical training and many other related subjects,” said Carla DeShaw, director of Continuing Education, Cazenovia College. “They are well trained to begin their career in law enforcement.”

Cazenovia College’s Pre-Employment Phase One Police Basic Training Program was established in partnership with the Frankfort Police Department, and approval from the State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

The curriculum meets all requirements established by the Municipal Police Training Council. A graduate is eligible to be hired anywhere in New York State upon completion. Eight cadets have already been offered jobs at local agencies, including Onondaga County Sheriff ’s Department, New Berlin Police Department, Geddes Police Department, Whitesboro Police Department, and Owego Sheriff ’s Department with more interviews taking place over the next few weeks.

The next Pre-Employment Phase One Police Basic Training session at Cazenovia College will begin on Sept. 13.

County accepting nominations for Farm Service Agency Farmers and ranchers have until Aug. 1, 2022, to nominate candidates to serve on the Madison County Farm Service Agency (FSA) Committee. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) accepts nominations each year in certain Local Administrative Areas (LAAs) for individuals to serve on these locally led committees.

“The Aug. 1 deadline is quickly approaching,” said Donna Purdy, executive director for FSA in Madison County. “Committee members play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of the agency and are vital to how FSA carries out disaster programs, as well as conservation, commodity and price support programs. This is your opportunity to have a say in how federal programs are delivered in our county.”

This year, Madison County is accepting nominations for LAA #3, which includes the Townships of Brookfield, DeRuyter, Georgetown, Hamilton and Lebanon. Agricultural producers who participate or cooperate in a USDA program, and reside in the LAA up for election this year, may be nominated for candidacy for the county committee. A cooperating producer is someone who has provided information about their farming or ranching operation to FSA, even if they have not applied or received program benefits.

Nationwide, more than 7,700 dedicated members of the agricultural community serve on FSA county committees. The committees are made up of three to 11 members who serve three-year terms. Individuals may nominate themselves or others and qualifying organizations may also nominate candidates. USDA encourages minority producers, women and beginning farmers or ranchers to nominate, vote, and hold office.

Producers should contact their local FSA office today to register and find out how to get involved in their county’s election, including if their LAA is up for election this year. crews when needed,” said CAVAC President Sara Mitchell. “Such collaborative effort leads to a rapid response for emergency situations.”

Despite its limitations, CAVAC requested mutual aid for fewer than five emergency calls throughout the shutdown.

According to Mitchell, calling for mutual aid means that an agency, like CAVAC, is unable to respond to a call, generally due to a lack of a second available crew.

“CAVAC always has a paramedic on duty to respond to a first call,” she explained. “Every effort is made to secure a second ‘backup crew,’ but once in a great while, that doesn’t happen and an outside agency, [like Manlius or Morrisville], is asked by the 911 center to respond.”

CAVAC has now been fully operational for several months, and during the recent Delta outbreak, the organization continued to operate normally.

As of June 29, 2022, CAVAC had approximately 85 members. So far this year, the agency has answered 535 calls; annually, the call volume is about 1,035.

Currently, the organization is experiencing a critical need for both additional crew coordinators and drivers for its two Ford F450s.

Crew coordinators are responsible for the following: securing a second crew in the event of a second emergency call, calling next day crew members to remind them of their shift, filling out call sheets and recording calls in the logbook, answering the business phone, greeting people at the front door, and checking in/out loaner medical equipment.

“Crew coordinators should have good, confident telephone voices, be comfortable with meeting new people, and possess a willingness to learn to understand radio communications,” said Mitchell. “Using those radios is limited; however, listening to and understanding communications between the 911 center and the ambulances is essential.”

Drivers are primarily responsible for driving the ambulances to the scene of an emergency, to the hospital (Syracuse, Hamilton, or Oneida), and then back to base.

They are also responsible for helping the paramedic and/ or EMT with equipment and cleaning and restocking the ambulance after returning to base.

According to Mitchell, experience driving a four-wheel drive pickup truck is beneficial but not required for drivers.

“Drivers should have clean driving records,” she added. “[They should also] be willing to learn where equipment is stored on the ambulances to be able to assist at the scene of an emergency, be able-bodied, and be willing to follow the instructions of the paramedic and/or members of any assisting rescue squad members.”

‘White Rock’ honored by Pompey Historical Society

The Pompey Historical Society recently honored “White Rock” a landmark that figures in the work of local author Jerome Mark Antil.

On June 15, a stone’s throw from author Jerome Mark Antil’s boyhood home—now the Delphi Falls Park—the Pompey Historical Society forever inducted the fabled ‘White Rock’ onto their celebrated museum campus in Pompey Center.

The white rock appears as backdrop in many scenes in an internationally awarded Pompey Hollow Book Club novel series by local author Antil.

One story in the series is an adventure to catch a Londoner hooligan from pickpocketing, relieving local farmers of their wallets at the New York State Fair’s Midway. Legend has it that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – author of Sherlock Holmes, an angel in the novel—was invited to meet Charlie Pitts—guardian angel to Pompey Hollow Book Club members. The two met on top of the barn garage roof at the Delphi Falls. While sitting on the roof with Pitts, Doyle admired the white rock under the glow of a full autumn moon.

Pompey Hollow Book Club and the Sideshow Pickpocket had this passage: “He looked up at the glowing white rock on the cliff across the creek. That was a sign. Angels on high approved Sir Doyle being the sister’s guardian angel.”

The white rock is now placed close to an original one room school house also on display.

T he Pompey Historical Society—a leader in preserving local and regional history invited Antil’s memory of the rock as being inspiration to his novels about growing up in the shadows of WWII—in the “crown” as he puts it in his novels—(Cazenovia to Lafayette to Tully to Gooseville Corner—to Delphi Falls and back to Cazenovia.)

Antil has received letters about the books from 18 countries around the world thanking him for telling the stories about growing up in the shadows of the war.

“Pompey Hollow Book Club novels are seeded in the truth—and appropriately stretched. Something I learned from Mark Twain,” Antil said

CPF acquires conservation property With the generous support of the Central New York Community Foundation, Cazenovia Preservation Foundation (CPF) has acquired an important conservation property that will provide a significant new addition to the Burlingame Trail Network. In December 2021, the CPF purchased 27.5 acres of undeveloped land with 470 feet of road frontage on US Route 20, west of the Village of Cazenovia.

This newly acquired land is located adjacent to other CPF-owned property and is part of a larger network of conserved lands that host the very popular Burlingame area trails. This new property will now be known as the “Burlingame Trails Northwest Gateway.”

“The importance of this property cannot be overstated,” said Jennifer Wong, CPF executive director. “This acquisition secures permanent public access to 1,400 feet of the Sherman’s Gulch Trail which connects CPF’s uniquely beautiful Sherman’s Gulch property to the larger network of CPF-maintained trails. The Sherman’s Gulch property boasts stunning rugged terrain, ferny glens and a cascading scenic waterfall.”

CPF’s Burlingame Trial Network are enjoyed by walkers, hikers, bikers, and the Limestone Creek Hunt Club in the warmer months, and cross-country skiers and snowshoers during the winter. In addition to its importance as an outdoor recreation area, this property has been designated as an important area within The Nature Conservancy’s Resilient and Connected Network to support plant

and animal species migration and range changes.

The acquisition was made possible by the Central New York Community Foundation, out of the first round of grant disbursements from the newly-established Dr. Robert J. Vitkus Fund. Bob Vitkus was a successful Central New York oral surgeon and an avid hunter and fly fisherman who loved the outdoors. In his last will and testament, he gave a generous gift to support outdoor parks and recreation, particularly conservation efforts to improve wildlife habitat and forest health.

The generous Vitkus gift adds to an impressive history of philanthropy in support of land conservation in the area. The property was purchased from Augustus, Jason, James, and Maxwell Moore, descendants of the Hubbard family, who donated much of the conserved lands in the Burlingame Road area to CPF decades ago.

“CPF’s interest in this property dates back nearly two decades,” said Jim Steinberg, CPF board president.

“The property has been on and off the market in recent years and was listed for sale again in early 2021.

We are extremely appreciative of the Community Foundation, The Robert J. Vitkus Fund and those Cazenovia families that have made this purchase and network of trails possible,” On April 18, 2022, CPF was awarded two New York State Conservation Partnership Program (NYSCPP) Grants from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund (EPF).

The NYSCPP is administered by the Land Trust Alliance in coordination with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). One of these grants will fund the installation of a driveway and parking area off of Rt. 20 at the newly acquired Burlingame Trails Northwest Gateway property to improve maintenance, emergency, and public access to the trail. The grant also will pay for drainage improvements and surface repairs of the trail, the installation of an informational kiosk, trail signage and markers, as well as a gate to prevent unauthorized vehicular traffic from proceeding onto the pedestrian/bike trail.

“We are thrilled about this grant award,” said Jack Stevens, CPF stewardship committee co-chair. “With these grant monies, CPF can properly steward the property and improve the quality of the user experience in this section of the trail network.”

Finally, but equally noteworthy, CPF also won a Capacity Grant from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program, which will be used to hire a part-time stewardship manager and bolster administrative support to prepare the renewal application for Land Trust Alliance Accreditation. CPF first earned accreditation status in 2018 through a detailed process that secured independent verification that their work and operations met high standards for land conservation, stewardship, and nonprofit management. Land trusts must reapply for accreditation every five years.

CCE of Madison County welcomes Larkin Podsiedlik as new executive director Cornell Cooperative Extension Madison County recently announced Larkin Podsiedlik has been appointed executive director of CCE Madison.

She had been serving as interim executive director with the association for several months. Podsiedlik was previously the executive director of CCE Steuben County in Bath and is returning to the Cornell Cooperative Extension system after working in philanthropy and non-profits in Syracuse.

A lifelong resident of Central New York, Podsiedlik grew up in Fabius, and got her start in CCE as the senior nutritionist for the Finger Lakes Eat Smart New York nutrition education program.

Prior to that she worked for Foodlink, a regional food hub and the Feeding America food bank serving the Finger Lakes. She is a nonprofit and food systems leader with experience in program delivery and development, organizational leadership, and community outreach in Maine, Massachusetts, and upstate New York. Podsiedlik has a master’s in public health and a masters in agriculture, food, and the environment, both from Tufts University.

CCE Madison brings local experience and Cornell research-based solutions together to help Madison County farms, families, and communities thrive. CCE Madison is com-

mitted to addressing community needs, from startups to centennial farms, from professional gardeners to home gardeners, from families needing access to healthier food options to youth needing positive role models and development opportunities.

“I am looking forward to continuing to lead the CCE Madison team,” Podsiedlik said. “I see so many opportunities to blend our Cornell research-based expertise with other local knowledge, to help lead conversations around agriculture, positive youth development, economic development, and other important community issues.”

Podsiedlik’s short term goals are to increase CCE’s representation and reach across Madison County. The extension’s breadth of programs is a well-kept secret, and her goal is to bring more awareness to the Association as a whole. The long-term goals that Podsiedlik envisions for the Association are to be a known leader within the county with strong board leadership and continued financial health.

“I believe CCE is a springboard for a lot of important conversations on things like food systems, climate change and youth development—all of those things where we can make a difference,” Podsiedlik said. “I look forward to helping CCE make a big difference in Madison County.”

National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum expands hours

The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum (NAHOF) is able to add open hours to its seasonal schedule due to an increase in volunteers and to a Colgate University Upstate Fellow.

NAHOF is currently open weekends from noon to 4 p.m. until Aug. 28.

The hall and museum will now also be open Monday – Wednesday noon to 4 p.m. until Aug. 10.

Further, NAHOF may be open to the public at other unscheduled hours during the summer by calling 773-620-9017. NAHOF is also open for special events and pre-arranged group tours.

Besides the Abolition Hall of Fame, the Chronology of Abolition from the Colonial Period to Reconstruction exhibits, and a facsimile of Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, the Power of the Pen activities developed for the Madison County Anti-Racism Collaborative in May will be available for the public. These activities continue the work of the mission to complete the second and ongoing abolition – the moral conviction to end racism. The activities include Abolition Amendment, Understanding the Confederate Flag, H. R. 40 Reparations, and Municipal Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
