On Father’s Day weekend (June 1819), more than 40 Lightning sailors from around New York State gathered at Willow Bank Yacht Club (WBYC) in Cazenovia for the annual Caz Flash Bash regatta.

Student from Russian-occupied Kherson, Ukraine, spends week in Erieville By kate Hill Staff Writer

n June 20, Alina Hlazkova, a 17-year-old student from Kherson, Ukraine, arrived at Syracuse Hancock International Airport to spend the week in Erieville with her second cousin Karen Storne and Storne’s husband, Peter Radosta.

Located in southern Ukraine, Kherson is an important shipbuilding city strategically situated on the Dnieper River that flows into the Black Sea. In early March 2022, Kherson became the first major Ukrainian city to fall to Russian forces since the Feb. 24 invasion.

Hlazkova’s mother and 10-year-old brother were able to escape to Germany; her father remains in Ukraine fighting the war.

Hlazkova, who is fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, German, and English, is a student of the Future Leaders Exchange, a United States Department of State program that provides scholarships for high school students from Europe and Eurasia to spend an academic year in the US, living with a family and attending an American high school. She recently completed her junior year in Antimony, Utah, and hopes to attend college in the US. Hlazkova will spend her senior year in West Newbury, Massachusetts, where she will live with Storne’s sister and brother-

in-law.

“When war broke out in Ukraine, Alina’s mother and [my] family discussed the situation and it was decided that Alina would remain in the US for another year,” said Storne.

According to Storne, her grandfather was in contact with his Ukrainian relatives during the Cold War but then lost touch.

When her aunt died in 2013, the relatives in Ukraine saw the obituary and reached out to Storne’s sister and niece; the two families have been in communication ever since.

During her time in Erieville, Hlazkova was introduced to several of Storne and Radosta’s friends who are aware of the hardships facing the Ukrainian people and are supportive. One of the individuals she planned to meet was Nancy Ries, a professor of anthropology at Colgate University who specializes in symbolic anthropology, social theory, Russian culture and society, and peace and conflict studies.

“Nancy is a friend who is fluent in Russian and wants to talk with Alina about Ukraine,” said Storne leading up to the meeting. “Nancy lives in Hamilton and has spent time in Russia as part of her international studies.”

A few days into her stay, Hlazkova, who celebrated her birthday on June 22, said she was very excited to meet her family in Erieville and Massachusetts.

Construction begins on 64-unit Caz Barns Apartments By kate Hill Staff Writer

In May 2022, construction began on the Caz Barns Apartments, a new 64-unit apartment complex on land across Nelson Street (Route 20) from Tops Plaza and behind the former Lucas homestead.

The project is primarily in the Residential Multifamily zoning district and partially in the Village Edge South Mixed Use zoning district on approximately 8.26 acres at 54 Nelson St. Situated in the southwest section of an approximately 30-acre property owned by Caz Barns, LLC, the complex will consist of four two-story apartment buildings, each containing eight single bedroom units and eight two-bedroom units.

The project also includes the construction of infrastructure and utilities for the complex, including roads, sidewalks, parking lots, streetlights, street trees, public water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater management facilities.

The developer plans to create an access road by extending Lakers Lane, which currently connects Nelson Street to the Hampton Inn & Suites.

According to Village of Cazenovia Planning Board Chairman Rich Huftalen, the extension will reconnect to Nelson Street west of Cazenovia Dental, thereby creating the loop envisioned for the Village Edge South zone in Cazenovia’s Comprehensive Plan.

Eventually, the access road will be a village street.

Mayor Kurt Wheeler said the Caz Barns project has been in the works for several years and was slowed the past couple years by the uncertainty surrounding the COVID19 pandemic.

“There is a significant shortage of quality housing, locally and nationwide, so the project is certainly timely at present,” Wheeler added. “We have had a good working relationship with [project leaders Dennis Gregg and Andy Day] and their design team, making adjustments to the project to meet the overall goals of the Village Edge South zone, which has been thoughtfully planned.”

The Village of Cazenovia Planning Board conditionally approved applications from

Caz Barns, LLC/Rodor, LLC for preliminary plat, site plan and architectural approval for the apartment complex on Aug. 31, 2020. On Oct. 11, 2021, the board granted final plat approval for the project subject to a list of conditions, including: preparation by the applicant and review/approval by the village engineer of a full stormwater pollution prevention plan, including erosion and sedimentation control; construction of new street and sidewalks in accordance with all village standards and subject to approval by the village public works administrator and the village engineer; and final detail of planting schedule and tree species prepared in consultation with the Village Tree Commission and approved by the village public works administrator.

On June 24, Huftalen reported that the village engineer and public works administrator are actively working with the developer to ensure the conditions of approval are being met.

“We have begun site work and are happy for feedback from the village and its consultants throughout,” said Day, who is a member of the ownership LLC and a general contractor. “We have received tremendous support from all the village offices, including the mayor, attorney, planning board, public works, and residents who attended public hearings. We feel our open mind and inclusive approach is important for the eventual users of our projects who are the Village of Cazenovia and surrounding population.”

According to Day, the apartment complex is just one phase of Caz Barns, LLC’s development plan for the property.

“To fully build out the entire master plan, we may be there three to four years,” said Day. “We have room for about 200,000 additional square feet of what we envision as residential, retail and office space. Each piece will complement and connect the previous.”

The Village of Cazenovia Planning Board typically meets on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Village Municipal Building.

Don’t be bored

On our calendars there are often various notations under the dates.

Some of these denote federal holidays or religious celebrations.

Some of these also draw attention to serious issues such as breast cancer awareness.

But some of these are also fun and lighthearted.

According to nationaldaycalendar. com, July, among many other things, is marked as Anti Boredom Month.

July was selected, according to the founder Alan Caruba, because after July 4th, there’s not much going on and it’s the hotter part of the summer break from school, a time when children on summer vacation often test their parents with chants that they are bored and there is nothing to do.

Caruba, a writer among other endeavors, created the idea in the 1980s as a bit of satire, but also used the idea to shine a light on mental health.

According to nationaldaycalendar. com, when fending off boredom, it’s important to know what the symptoms are and why we get bored. We often associate being bored with having nothing to do, but that’s not always the case. Many times, we have plenty to do or are even doing it, but the task at hand does not stimulate our minds. It may be repetitive or not challenging enough.

When this happens, we can become irritable, tired, or begin to not care about how well we do a task.

We may also seek out stimulation to relieve the boredom. Depending on what we seek, it may be good or bad for us. We can form good habits or bad ones.

While Caruba may have initiated the idea as a satire of people complaining about being bored, he raised an interesting point that we can all consider.

When we are bored we can ask ourselves how we contend with that boredom.

It is natural to get bored from time to time, but if we sit and do nothing or use the opportunity to get motivated and do something can make a world of difference in our mood and attitude.

While Caruba created the concept of Anti Boredom Month in the 1980s, before smart phones, in some ways the technology we use to amuse ourselves can also lend itself to our boredom as we scroll endlessly, looking for something new and interesting that will stimulate our minds.

The same could be said for things that came before, television, video games, etc., can engage us, but can also allow our minds to disengage and become bored.

There are a number of ways we can do things more actively.

Engaging in a board game with friends and family, getting up and moving and getting more physical exercise also helps out bodies fight boredom.

Taking on new activities and new knowledge by visiting a museum, learning to cook a new dish or reading a book can help our minds become more engaged.

Exploring your creativity by writing, drawing or playing music can all be good activities.

If you are able to, volunteering is a great way to stave off boredom while giving something back to others.

And of course being social with friends and family can make a world of difference.

The past few years have been a challenging time, a time that many likely felt more than just bored, but isolated and alone.

As the health situation improves, this is provides a good opportunity to explore new ways be active and enjoy life.

With more events from concerts to summer festivities coming back, we hope there is a lot to do and that whether it is riding a bike, reading a book in the park, going to the beach with friends or going for a hike, your summer will not be a boring one.

Not my ideal, but my real I usually begin to write my column on Saturday, leaving it for a day or two, returning on Monday or Tuesday to edit. Not this week. Procrastination sat me down on Tuesday afternoon to put digital pen to paper when I found this piece, I wrote seven years ago. It summarizes my approach to life perfectly … one that is not my ideal but my real. I hope you enjoy it: Friday afternoon was beautiful. Warm, sunny, just the perfect day to pick berries. So I did. Basket in hand, I began the yearly ritual of remembering my grandmother and harvesting the wherewithal to make jam.

It was midafternoon and I was the only one at Burdocks berries. This is as close to paradise as you can get in Borodino. The only sound came from the birds calling across the fields and the crickets jumping in and out of the stands of fruit I had picked two quarts when my aging back told me to stop.

My intention was to make jam that evening, but I didn’t. Just the thought of gathering all of the equipment, sterilizing the jars and bringing the water in the big canning pot to the boil made me need a nap. Besides, I hadn’t checked my email or

Facebook all day. It was on Facebook that my fate was sealed. There, from some site that I haven’t “liked” was a listing of hairstyles that were good for the summer. I started to read and realized after contemplating the various coiffeurs, I had neither the hair nor the time to conjure any of the proffered options. So, no jam and no nap ... and no new hairstyle either. I put the berries, basket and all into the refrigerator, next to the milk and orange juice.

Then came Saturday.

Surely I would make the jam on Saturday. The whole day lay ahead of me. How long would it take to schlep the canner, the empty jars and new lids and the big cooking pot upstairs? What, five minutes … maybe ten if I took it slowly? I dutifully checked the berries, still resting in their basket on the middle shelf in the fridge.

But first I had some laundry to do and there were two plants that needed moving in my garden. Then there was lunch and the village wide garage sale and I thought that I would wait until early evening when it would be cooler. I took a nap and worked on sorting some photographs, both of which took longer than planned.

My journey to beome a LGBTAQ ally To the editor: I was born into a community which fully embraced the traditional interpretation of the Holy Scriptures on all things “gay.” I knew everything the Bible had to say on the topic (all four references) and was very clear about the unquestionable meaning of these texts – homosexual behavior was a sin and to be LGBTQ was a choice.

Later, as a youth minister, I had no difficulty explaining to teens who expressed what I deemed “confusion” about their sexuality that to be gay was to be in violation of God’s sovereign will and in open rebellion against our Creator.

I was living in an environment in which the only thing available to counter my beliefs were national news broadcasts of Pride marches – angry people yelling at one another across rainbow-colored lines.

I had no gay friends and saw only caricatures that fit well with my stereotypes. This lasted until I went to Princeton Seminary.

During my first week of class, another woman on campus invited me to lunch.

Part way through the meal, she leaned over and whispered under her breath, “There’s

room here for people like us.”

(By which she meant, “I’ve told you I’m queer and am under the impression that you are too.”)

Though I had to clarify that I wasn’t interested in a dating relationship, I had enjoyed our conversation and our friendship continued. I had, for the first time in my life, made a gay friend. And many more were to follow.

Over the next few months, I found myself surrounded by more and more members of the LGBTQIA+ community on campus. As we ate together, studied together, played together – all in an environment in which the spotlight wasn’t on LGBTQIA+ issues – I discovered we actually had a great deal in common. More importantly, those studying to become pastors were preaching and teaching the same God I was – just a slightly different interpretation of four specific Scripture references.

For the first time, I became interested in listening to why.

Not because someone was trying to force me to listen, but because I’d come up against a hard truth: the theology I embraced didn’t fit with the reality I was encountering. I was going to have to continue to hold beliefs which I knew couldn’t be true or I was going to have to revise my theology to account for the new information.

Today I’m proud to call myself an ally. I tell you this story as one of hope. The single most powerful and world-transforming impact any of us can have isn’t in angry activism or cool conversation; it’s in simply being ourselves.

Diversity is part of God’s blessing. And just as every sculpture or canvass bears within it the image of the artist who made it, so each of us bear the image of our Creator. A Creator who makes no mistakes. So be proud. Be yourself. Go change the world.

Now, it was Sunday. Our son was running in the Boilermaker in Utica and my spouse wanted to be there for him. Being there not only meant driving to Utica, it meant a lot of walking over uneven terrain. I demurred and stayed home.

This would be a good time to make the jam. First though, there was church, then a quick run to the store to get copy paper for a project left unfinished because I ran out of paper, then, of course, there was lunch and a great need to get out to camp to rescue the succulents that my sister-in-law had brought me a week before. The plan was now to work out at the cottage, meet my husband for dinner at some place that takes money in return for food and then, while I was watching Sunday night TV on the little set in the kitchen, then, I would make the jam.

I got a phone call from the spouse saying that he, our son and his girlfriend were coming out to camp. What was I planning for dinner?

OK, so another quick run to Nojaim’s to get ground beef, rolls and corn. No jam on Sunday night and Monday’s option was good only in the evening. OK, jam in the evening on Monday. I checked

After an exhausting but rewarding day in the Emergency Department on Monday, I arrived home in the torpid, so hot afternoon, thinking that only an idiot would fire up the stove and boil gallons of water while standing over a steaming cauldron of berries and sugar. I checked the berries.

Still good.

Today is Tuesday and I made the jam. Well, I think it’s jam. Rather than use pectin, which would mean another trip to the store and who knows what temptations to procrastination, I elected to use my grandmother’s recipe: one cup of fruit to one cup of jam and boil until two drops come to one on the edge of a spoon. I did that and made about 10 half pints of wild black raspberry jam … or wild black raspberry syrup. We’ll find out when the jars cool down. And people think I’m organized. Sad. Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

155 years ago – June 26, 1867

The Prize Readings of the young ladies of the Seminary took place in the Chapel on Monday, at 8 p.m., and were highly creditable to the institution and the participants. Some eight young ladies entered into the laudable contest, and manifested good taste in their selection and style of reading.

Tastes in this, as in other matters, differ, and it may not be easy for the committee to decide who, on the whole, deserves the honorable award. The articulation and intonation of most the readers were fine, but in some there was a lack of volume which somewhat detracted from the otherwise excellent style.

The fiorometer during the exercises gave strong indications of popular favor, and we advise all horticulturists to look not only to their “laurels,” but to their flowers, which seem to have an aerial tendency just now.

130 years ago – June 30, 1892

A valuable silk umbrella was taken either by mistake or otherwise from the hall of a residence on Seminary Street recently.

The handle is carved in diamonds. The owner prizes it highly as a gift from a dear friend and if it is returned to this office no questions will be asked. ~ The Cazenovia Coal & Lumber Co. have put four inch tires on their wagons. This is a step towards good roads that means more than a four column article in a newspaper. If the other teamsters will kindly follow suit, our streets and lawns will be more presentable in wet weather. ~ Three of the finest crates of strawberries that we have seen in market this year were brought in Tuesday night by Norman Hart. They were secured by P. H. Donnelly. The average berry measured from four to five inches in circumference. There were of Mr. Hart’s own raising and mostly the Jessie variety.

110 years ago – June 27, 1912

The women of Cazenovia have had a treat the past week in attending the pure food demonstrations in cooking, held in the Odd Fellows’ rooms. The series of lessons were under the direction of J. T. Mattoon, of the 20th Century cooking School, and Mrs. R. M. Clute of the Clute School of Domestic Science of Schenectady, as lecturer. Mr. Mattoon has been in the business of advertising pure food products for 13 years. The average attendance at the cooking classes was about a hundred ladies, and general interest has been shown. The menus demonstrated last week (for example) consisted of: Monday afternoon, malt breakfast food, Beech-Nut broiled bacon, “Steero” bouillon, Beech-Nut catsup, Crisco rosettes, chocolate jelly, layer cake, White House coffee.

70 years ago – June 26, 1952

A snake about 5 feet long and as large as a man’s arm has been seen near the Lehigh Valley railroad tracks just south of Williams Street. It came from the west side of the track, crossed over and disappeared down the other side near the creek. It was seen by Mrs. Frank Stoecker and Frankie Ayers. ~ A band of gypsies camped at Chittenango Falls park several days last week but have now gone on their way – with no regrets on the part of the nearby residents. The visitors attracted many three-townships folks to the park and some children had never seen gypsies.

Constance L. Paddock, 88

(L.Ernest) Wightman, six grandchildren, and one great-grandson, all of whom will treasure her sweet Christian example.

Services were held at the Open Door Baptist Church in New Woodstock, where she worshipped and served for decades with her dear church family. Calling hours were Saturday, June 25, 2022, from 5-6 p.m., immediately followed by the funeral service.

Connie was the loving wife of Clinton J. Paddock for 56 years until his death in 2015. She leaves behind her son, David (Donna) Paddock, and her daughter, Susan

Richard Loomis, 81

Educator, carpenter, farmer Richard Wood Loomis, 81, passed peacefully surrounded by family on June 17, 2022. Beloved husband of Claudia Alice Soule Loomis of 59 years, loving father of Heidi (Denis) Mulcahy, Jamie (Eric) Kent, and Richard (Alison) Loomis; “Papa” to 10 grandchildren - Ashley (Zach) Wightman, Daniel Kent, Andrew Kent, Kaitlyn Mulcahy, Denis Mulcahy Jr., Lindsay Mulcahy, Benjamin Loomis, Joseph Loomis, Walter Loomis, and Levi Loomis. Born on May 17, 1941, in North Pitcher to the late Ashville Verne Loomis and late Hazel Wood Loomis, Richard attended South Otselic Central School and the State University of New York College at Cortland, where he studied education and played varsity football and lacrosse. Richard taught physical education at Medina High School for three years and then at Morrisville-Eaton High School for 32 years, during which he coached junior high and high school sports including football, basketball and track. Richard also coached college football at Hamilton College, where he served as offensive coordinator for several years.

In addition to his teaching career, Richard was also a skilled carpenter, a talent he acquired from his father. He built houses and completed numerous renovation projects during his summers. From his Grandfather Verne and Grandmother Mabel’s decades-run square dance business, the “Loomis Hayloft,” Richard gained a passion for square dancing, a passion which he shared with his wife over the years. Richard was also active within the Community, running the Youth Commission program for many years, providing local youth with opportunities to engage in summer athletics, the arts, and part-time employment. He received numerous awards for his service and leadership to both the community and to the MECS High School athletics programs including: The Rotary Community Service Award, MECS Teacher of the Year, MECS student year-book dedications, and Clarkson University’s “Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year” Award.

Upon retiring from teaching, Richard embarked on another endeavor rooted in his farming upbringing, purchasing a 200

acre farm in Morrisville. Over the last 25 years, Richard raised Angus, Wagyu, and dairy replacement cattle.

He also grew vegetables to sell at his farm stand, providing fresh produce for locals. The highlight of his farm was Richard Loomis producing maple syrup, a tradition passed on for five generations. Richard and his family sold syrup locally and at Farmers Markets, including the New York City Green Market. A highlight each year was participating in the annual Madison County Farm Days where his family would gather to help both “Papa” & “Grammy” host this event. Richard loved his family, his students, his animals, and the land. He was a dedicated educator, coach, and farmer from birth to the end, tending to his cattle, tilling the land, gardening with his wife, and coaching his students. He was a loving and beloved husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed teaching future generations of student athletes and farmers alike.

He will be remembered for his intense work ethic, along with his tireless dedication to the lives of countless students. Richard was recently referred to by a former colleague as a “Legend” - no matter what role he held, as Coach Loomis, Richard, Dad, or Papa - he will forever be remembered in this high regard.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Morrisville Community Church, 3824 Swamp Road, Morrisville. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 8, 2022 at the Morrisville Community Church. Always a teacher, Richard’s wishes were to donate his body for anatomy education at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He will be laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery in Otselic, N.Y., at a future time.

Managed hotels, worked as a tax assessor Theodore C Littler, 91, of Barrington, RI, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 16, 2022.

Ted was a long-time resident of Providence, RI, and Seekonk, MA, before moving to Barrington, RI. A graduate of Duke University, he spent the first half of his career in the hospitality industry, managing hotels in Syracuse and New York City. The people and stories that he shared spoke volumes of the exciting time there.

He then moved on to Providence, RI to the historic Biltmore Hotel

ultimately finding his final career stop as a highly successful twenty plus year career as the Tax Assessor of the City of Providence that brought him many friends and much happiness. He enjoyed meeting many wonderful people through his long career maintaining friendships throughout his retirement.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife Helen (Naklick) of 49 years, his parents and siblings. He is survived by multiple generations of family members and friends.

“After several delays, the regatta was able to run four action packed races, with plenty of close tacks, a few contacts on the water, planning downwind under spinnakers, and wet and exhausted sailors at the end of the day,” said Walburger. “To comfort the competitors, the WBYC Lightning Fleet hosted a BBQ dinner from Ray Brothers, and plenty of food, drinks, and stories of the day were shared.”

Due to stronger sustained winds on Sunday, the second day of races was canceled.

According to Walburger, Saturday saw stiff competition between visiting skippers Jimmy Barnash, of Rochester, and John Newell, also of Rochester, who traded first and second place finishes throughout the regatta. Ultimately, Barnash secured the victory with a total of five points (three first place finishes and one second place finish), and Newell took second with seven points. WBYC skippers Tom King and Clay Murphy earned third and fifth place finishes, respectively.

‘The Cosmos and Clay’ at Cazenovia Artisans July brings a once local potter, now living and working in Virginia, back to exhibit his work once more in Central New York.

Ron Sutterer, who specializes in wood fired ash glazes and electric fired crystalline glazes, will be Cazenovia Artisans’ Visiting Artist for the month of July.

Sutterer started his ceramics career by visiting potters near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. By becoming a collector of this traditional pottery he began learning about the form and craft of production pottery.

When he moved to Central New York to teach at Syracuse University, he took a ceramics

course and became hooked on the process of making pottery.

He now lives in an artistically rich environment in Floyd, Virginia. Students honored at Section III awards dinner

Top scholar-athletes from across Central New York were celebrated on June 13 when the Section III Scholar-Athlete Awards dinner took place at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.

Cazenovia had, for its two honorees, Sophie Clancy and James LaFever. Clancy competed in field hockey and golf while in high school and is going to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy this fall.

LaFever took part in soccer, ice hockey and lacrosse, helping those teams all make strong postseason runs as the soccer and lacrosse teams each reached their respective sectional finals. He is going to Cornell University.

Chittenango chose Allison Soulier and Josh Boulter. Soulier is headed for Syracuse University

and took part in tennis, basketball and softball, while Boulter is going to Clemson University in South Carolina having starred on the Bears’ sectional championship boys volleyball team, along with soccer and tennis.

Launched in 1988, the Section III Scholar-Athlete program is the section’s most prestigious award and honors both academic and scholastic excellence.

To be eligible, a student must have a cumulative grade average of 90 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in a Section III sponsored sport. Other factors, such as community service, exemplary citizenship or other extracurricular activities are also considered.

For 2021-22, of the 179 scholar-athletes chosen, 28 were ranked no. 1 in their class and 145 of them were ranked 10th or higher in their class.

The public is invited to come in and visit with Ron at his opening reception on Saturday, July 2 from 2 to 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Sutterer’s pottery will be featured at Cazenovia Artisans from July 1 to 31 at 39 Albany St. Call 315-655-2225 for more information.

Morgan Kingsley, Quinn Smith and Brody Coleman recently signed letters of intent for college in the fall.

hree student-athletes in the class of 2022 were celebrated at Cazenovia High School as they made their college intentions known. Seniors Morgan Kingsley, Quinn Smith and Brody Coleman announced their decisions with coaches and family by their side.

Kingsley will join the women’s swimming and diving team and study actuarial science at Bentley University.

“The college has a ton of different opportunities to explore,” Kingsley said. “My coach is so supportive of me doing other clubs and exploring other options in addition to swimming.”

Smith will join the men’s swimming and diving team at Marist College.

“They have pretty much everything I could want,” Smith said. “I got along really well with the coach and had a great overnight visit.”

Coleman will be playing lacrosse while studying economics at Yale University.

“I chose Yale because of the balance of academics and lacrosse,” Coleman said.

“They’re competing for a national championship every year and that factored heavily into my decision.”

The student-athletes expressed thankfulness for their family, friends and coaches for all of their support in their athletic careers.
