An unseasonably sweet moment

A milder Winterfest

The Nelson Creamery took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather to open this past weekend for the Fire and Ice event. It’s not often in February that you can sit outside and enjoy a little soft serve ice cream, but that’s what Weston Hartline did, satisfying his ice cream craving on a 62-degree day.

Winterfest in Cazenovia had a decidedly different feel this past weekend, as high temperatures and a lack of snow cancelled several of the annual events. But that didn’t stop Miles Allen from enjoying one of several ice sculptures that were created around the village or the groups that enjoyed the horse-drawn carriage rides around Lorenzo and Meier’s Creek.

New cleaning station, launch procedures coming to Cazenovia Lake By David Tyler

As part of the continuing effort to protect Cazenovia Lake from invasive species, a new boat cleaning station will be installed at Lakeside Park and new boat launch procedures will be put in place for the upcoming boating season. At the Feb. 5 village of Cazenovia Board

of Trustees meeting, Trustee Tom Tait, who also serves on the board of the Cazenovia Lake Association, provided details of the new protocols. The cleaning station will be a dry station, as opposed to the spray stations located on many lakes in the Adirondacks. It is the same procedure that is currently being used on Lake George.

“Think of it as a Shop Vac on steroids,” Tait said last Monday night. The station is approximately the size of two large parking spaces and will be installed immediately to the west of the steward’s station. Last fall, Lauren Lines of CACDA applied for a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for the $46,000 station and

the town of Cazenovia will provide $10,000 in matching funds. The cleaning station will be ordered in March with an anticipated delivery later this spring and will be owned and maintained by the town. When a boat arrives at the park to launch, it will first be evaluated by the Lake l Page 3

Caz school district begins budget process District mulls decaying bus garage The Cazenovia Central School District began the 2024-25 budget development process at its first board of education budget work session held on Monday, Feb. 5. Superintendent Christopher DiFulvio and Assistant Superintendent/School Business Official Thomas Finnerty presented the highlights of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s executive budget proposal, which includes a modest increase in state aid to school districts across the state due to declining enrollment in New York schools over the last decade. Under the proposal, the Cazenovia district would receive a projected reduction in state aid of -$339,823. With a simple rollover budget based on the current school year, Cazenovia would need to generate an estimated $1,854,276 million in revenue to offset expenses and the estimated reduction in state aid. Administration also shared the district’s maximum allowable tax levy limit, which is 4.4% for the 2024-25 school year. The limit is the threshold by which a simple majority of voters is required for approval. Cazenovia’s academic programming,

course offerings and graduation rates were highlighted, and staff and student enrollment data were also shared. Currently, students at the high school have 23 options for Advanced Placement and college credit courses. The CCSD graduation rate has held steady at 96% for the past two years. Total enrollment at Cazenovia has declined over the last 10 years, with an average loss of 20 enrolled students per year. This year, CCSD saw a decrease of ten students from last year while adding 34 students in UPK. Class sizes trend slightly above the statewide averages at the elementary and middle school levels. The budget process will continue over the next three months. Information regarding board of education meetings can be found on our website. The annual public hearing on the proposed budget will be held on Tuesday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The annual budget vote and election will take place on Tuesday, May 21 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the middle school aux gym.

The Cazenovia Board of Education faces some daunting decisions regarding the declining condition of the district’s bus garage. Built in 1976 as a pole barn, the 7,240 square foot building has four service bays and one wash bay. On Monday night, Superintendent Christopher DiFulvio and director of facilities Eric Benedict presented the board with a slide show detailing multiple problems with the building, including a leaky roof, doors and walls that are rusted through, cracked concrete and heaving flooring, overhead doors that don’t work, rusted fuel tanks that won’t pass inspection, and a well that doesn’t produce potable water. Benedict said that many of the roof trusses have rotted through, and when it rains, the roof leaks and water gets into the building’s electrical panels. In addition, the outdated fire alarm is not monitored, so if an emergency took place there overnight, no one would know. Of immediate concern, however, is the

concrete that supports the garage’s sole underground lift is failing and Benedict said it will not pass the NYS Department of Transportation’s bi-annual inspection coming up in June. Repairing the lift would cost approximately $175,000 while replacing it would cost about $525,000. “There are required services that we need to provide there,” he told the board. In both 2015 and in 2021, the district contracted with architectural firms to survey the needs of the building. In 2015, the survey indicated about $473,500 of high priority repairs that needed to take place. By 2021, that number had increased to $2.219 million, with several million more required to fix all the building’s issues. The decision on what to do with the building is muddled by the state’s mandate that districts convert their fleets to zeroemission vehicles in the coming years, and whether even if fully repaired, the location of the current bus garage would be able to handle a new fleet of vehicles. “Currently, we don’t think the site is big Garage l Page 12

When a boat is taken out of the water, it will be tagged with a tamper-proof zip tie between the bow of the boat and the trailer. That way, when boats with tags return to the lake, the steward will know that Cazenovia Lake is the last lake the boat was

on. Boats that arrive without a tag will go through the evaluation and cleaning process. “The whole goal is not to make it difficult for people getting on Cazenovia Lake. It’s to make sure we protect Cazenovia Lake from invasive species,” Tait said. “Our objective is simple; do everything we can at the launch to minimize the likelihood of invasives like Hydrilla entering Cazenovia Lake.” The boat launch and cleaning station will also have new hours of operation this year. From April through June, it will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; from July to August it will be open 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and it September it will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Unlike in years past, the launch gate at the water’s edge will close when the last on-duty steward’s shift ends, with no exceptions.

Oxbow Hill Solar, LLC Madison County, New York 60-DAY NOTICE OF INTENT TO FILE AN APPLICATION Oxbow Hill Solar, LLC (“Oxbow Hill” or the “Applicant”), a wholly owned subsidiary of Cypress Creek Renewables Development, LLC (“Cypress Creek”), is proposing to construct a major solar electric generating facility up to 140 megawatts (“MW”) in capacity in the Town of Fenner, Madison County, New York (the “Facility”). This notice announces that on or about April 5, 2024, Oxbow Hill will file an Application with the Office of Renewable Energy Siting (“ORES”), pursuant to Section 94-c of the New York State Executive Law (“the 94-c Process”), seeking a Siting Permit from ORES authorizing the construction and operation of the Facility. The 94-c Process has been implemented by rules enacted by ORES and establishes a review process with uniform standards and conditions for all renewable energy projects. The uniform standards and conditions are available at 19 NYCRR 900.6 and www.ores.ny.gov/regulations. The Facility is proposed to include the installation of arrays of photovoltaic panels, approximately 8 to 10 feet in height and arranged in discrete subarrays dispersed throughout the Facility Site, as well as associated electrical collection lines, inverters, an interconnection substation, fencing, access roads and an operations and maintenance building. Power generated at the Facility will be stepped up to the interconnection voltage (115 kV) at the Facility substation. The Facility will interconnect to the New York electrical grid via a new Point of Interconnection (115 kV bus) to the existing Fenner Windfarm Substation which is connected to National Grid’s Cortland to Fenner 115-kV transmission line. The Project substation will be a new facility and located within the Facility Site directly adjacent to the existing Fenner Windfarm Substation. More information on the proposed Facility can be found on the project’s dedicated website (https://ccrenew.com/projects/oxbow/). The Facility is a zero-emission solar energy facility that will assist the State in meeting the goals of the Climate Leadership and Protection Act and State Energy Plan, which includes obtaining 70% of energy generation from renewable sources by 2030 and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Other positive impacts of the Facility include the creation of full-time equivalent construction jobs, local spending on accommodations, dining, and other local services during the construction and installation period, a Host Community Agreement directly with the Town to support public improvements and other municipal services such as donations to the ambulance district, at least 10 times the amount of Town, County, and School District taxes than currently generated by land, bill credits paid directly to residential electric customers in the host municipality, the generation of enough electricity to power 30,000 homes annually, helping New York State become energy independent. In addition, Oxbow Hill has attempted to minimize impacts associated with the Project, for example, by co-locating project infrastructure with the existing Fenner Wind Farm and limiting the disturbance to forested lands and wetlands to the maximum extent practicable. Oxbow Hill will submit an Application for a Siting Permit that includes extensive studies evaluating the potential impacts associated with the Facility and identified methods which have been agreed to be implemented to avoid, minimize and mitigate potential impacts. No sooner than three days before the Application is filed, an additional notice will be published announcing the anticipated filing of the Application. This notice is being provided in accordance with 19 NYCRR 900- 1.3(d) and is being published at least 60 days prior to the filing of the Application. Pursuant to 19 NYCRR 900-5, Oxbow Hill will submit with the Application $1,000 dollars for each MW of capacity for local agencies and potential community intervenors, which for this project, totals $140,000.00. Any local agency or potential community intervenor can submit a request to the Office for funding within thirty (30) days of the date of the application filing. By regulation, 75% of the local agency account funds shall be reserved for local agencies. Intervenor requests may be made by mail to the Office of Renewable Energy Siting, Attention: Local Agency Account Funding Request (Matter No. 23-00060), c/o OGS Mailroom, Empire State Plaza, 240 State Street, P-1 South, J Dock, Albany, NY 12242, or by email to hearings@ores.ny.gov, Subject line “Local Agency Account Funding Request (Matter No. 23-00060).” Further details regarding the Project and updates on the Application will be provided on https://ccrenew.com/projects/oxbow/ or the ORES website, https:// ores.ny.gov/permit-applications, under Matter No. 23-00060. Printed and electronic copies of the Application, when filed, will be available for review at the following local document repository: Sullivan Free Library, 101 Falls Boulevard, Chittenango, NY 13037. a powerhouse on your plate These foods can boost your diet

A

nutritious diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. That’s an important thing to remember for people looking to turn over a healthier leaf and accomplish their long-term wellness goals. Avoiding certain ingredients, like saturated fats and added sugars, and choosing foods known for their nutritional benefits is one way individuals can utilize diet to live healthier. Although such foods cannot entirely eliminate risk for certain diseases or make a person invincible, eating more of them certainly can benefit individuals’ overall health.

Kale

Kale long has had a place on healthy eating lists. Kale is a good source of vitamins A, C and K, and also contains alphalinolenic acid, which is an omega-3 fatty acid. According to Britannica, studies show kale can help combat heart

disease and cancer, and also boost eye health by reducing risk for cataracts and macular degeneration. Kale is not the only dark, leafy green vegetable that has earned superstar status. Swiss chard, spinach, collard greens, and turnip greens are equally beneficial.

Berries

There is strong antioxidant capacity associated with berries that helps reduce the risk of heart disease and other inflammatory conditions, according to Healthline. That’s why blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and cranberries are so revered by nutritionists. They’re also great sources of fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Honey

This natural sweetener is a powerful ally to animals and insects. Honey is one of the most appreciated and valued natural products, according to the study “Honey and Health: A Review of Recent Clinical Research,” published in 2017. Since ancient times, honey has been used therapeutically due to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflamma-

tory, and antiproliferative effects.

Walnuts

Studies have found that those with higher nut consumption have improved cardiovascular risk factors and lower rates of cardiovascular disease. Nuts are an important part of the Mediterranean diet, which has been found to be heart healthy as well, according to Harvard Health. Walnuts are a particularly good choice for lowering LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and apoprotein B (a protein linked to cardiovascular disease).

Legumes

Legumes, also known as pulses, include beans, lentils, peas, peanuts, and alfalfa. Full of nutrients, like minerals, protein, fiber, and B vitamins, Healthline said legumes also improve feelings of fullness, which may help people eat less at each meal.

Teff

Not too many people have heard of teff, which is a very small grain that is a dietary staple in parts of eastern Africa. Teff is high in iron, magnesium, zinc, calcium and vitamin C. and contains ample protein and fiber. Teff also is gluten-free, so it can be ground and used in place of other flours in cooking, according to Britannica.

Kefir

Fermented foods and beverages have garnered increased attention recently because of their effect on helping maintain gut health. One such beverage you may have seen in your local grocery store is Kombucha, a fermented, lightly effervescent, sweetened black tea drink. Another is Kefir, which is loaded with vitamins, minerals and nutrients, says the Cleveland Clinic. It is a fermented milk that boasts higher concentrations of probiotics than some other fermented foods, like yogurt. Kefir has approximately 12 active probiotic strains. These nutrient-rich foods can make great additions to health-conscious individual’s diets, but always consult a doctor before making any changes to your diet.

Raising awareness

Feb. 4 marked World Cancer Day, a time to focus on raising awareness of the disease in all its many forms as well as shine a light on the progress that has been made in detecting, treating and possibly one day eliminating cancer. It also marked more than two decades of the movement according to worldcancerday.org. According to the website, this is a global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). The mission statement of the website states that by raising worldwide awareness, improving education and catalyzing personal, collective and government action, progress is being made to reimagine a world where millions of preventable cancer deaths are saved and access to life-saving cancer treatment and care is equal for all - no matter who you are or where you live. It is the organization’s goal to reduce the number of premature deaths from cancer and noncommunicable diseases by one third by 2030. According to worldcancerday.org, 9.6 million people die each year from cancer. That’s more than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined, according to the website and it is estimated that by 2030, cancer deaths to rise to 13 million. The website also shares that at least one third of common cancers are preventable, cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide, and 70% of cancer deaths occur in low-to-middle income countries and according to the website, up to 3.7 million lives could be saved each year by implementing resource appropriate strategies for prevention, early detection and treatment. The total annual economic cost of cancer is estimated at US$1.16 trillion. Cancers can be caused by a number of different factors and, as with many other illnesses, most cancers are the result of exposure to a number of different causal factors, according to worldcancerday.org. It is important to remember that, while some factors cannot be modified, around one third of cancer cases can be prevented by reducing behavioral and dietary risks. Some modifiable risk factors include alcohol consumption, being overweight/obese, diet and nutrition, lack of physical activity and tobacco consumption to name a few. Other factors can include exposure to radiation such as radon, x-rays, gamma rays and other forms of high-energy radiation. Prolonged and unprotected exposure to ultraviolet radiations from the sun, sunlamps and tanning beds can also lead to melanoma and skin malignancies. Work place hazards such as chemical dyes and asbestos and exposure to human papillomavirus (HPV). Signs to be aware of and proactive in speaking to a doctor about include, unusual lumps or swelling, coughing, breathlessness or difficulty swallowing, changes in bowel habit, unexpected bleeding, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, new mole or changes to a mole, complications with urinating, unusual breast changes, appetite loss, a sore or ulcer that won’t heal, persistent heartburn or indigestion, heavy night sweats. By being aware of changes we may be experiencing, early detection and treatment may be possible. To learn more visit worldcancerday.org.

What’s driving the bus? When I was first teaching I discovered that my students who were in high school at the time had a vague idea that I lived in school. Well, not so much in school but somehow suspended in a place between their lives and school when school was not in session. I think the same is true of adults when it comes to the professionals with whom they come in contact, when they know intellectually that those professionals lead much the same lives as they do. This particular professional is on the not-so-tall side with really curly red hair and a decided flair for research and investigation. Analytical would be a good descriptor. Tony Franks would probably substitute her favorite interrogator, “What is driving the bus?” This applies to most any issue for her. husband designed a series of activities leading to earning a badge in forensics. And what are they doing? She and her said spouse are using fingerprinting and chromatography to figure out which of the grownups in the household ate a missing cupcake, making the activity relevant to a humorous, potentially real-life experience of the children. Not that the adults are cupcakes thieves, but it’s more tangible to children than a bank robbery or grand theft auto. In her daily must-dos, Tony’s problem-solving refrain keeps things moving. Take food prep. It takes research and alert analysis to figure out what to serve for dinner to a family with multiple food intolerances. What foods don’t include gluten, dairy, nuts, etc.? A daunting task, but her ability to analyze the problem and find a solution has led to a personal collection of deli-

Update on Medhat

To the editor: The front page of the Cazenovia Republican featured a photo of me and my two foreign exchange students in its April 5, 2023 publication. In May, Andy returned to Bulgaria and Medhat to the Gaza Strip. Of course, I knew that Medhat was going back to dangerous territory but I didn’t envision the reality that is Gaza today. While the boys were with me, they lived in our community, attended school events and dances with our kids, participated on sports teams, and enjoyed learning about what life in the US is like. Since October Medhat has been living a hell where his very survival from day to day was at risk. Daily bombings, hunger, thirst, and the cessation of electricity and withholding of medical supplies by the Israeli government has caused the loss of life to around 30,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. Most of the population is now forced to live on the streets in the cold going without food for entire days. A few months ago, I received news from Medhat that he, his mother, and two younger sisters managed to get out of Gaza and are currently staying with his aunt in Cairo. It offered me the relief from wondering every morning if he were still alive. His father, a pediatrician, is still in Gaza where the hospitals have been under bombardment as well as schools and residential buildings. Several months ago, Medhat reported that an uncle and two young cousins, ages 10 and 12, were killed by Israel tank fire. Photos shared every day show babies’ lifeless bodies being pulled from the rubble of their now destroyed homes. The actual number of those buried alive is not yet known but experts expect the number of dead will rise dramatically once the dust clears. I lived with my four kids and Israeli husband in Israel for 12 years before returning to the US in 2004 and finding myself in a town called Cazenovia. While there, I began paying attention and learning more about the history of this ongoing conflict, and eventually became an activist for Palestinian human rights. I’ve continued my work here in the US where activism is more important since our tax dollars financially support the Israeli government. The horrendous killing going on today is thanks to President Biden and those tax dollars going to resupply weaponry against a mostly defenseless people. In the years prior to Oct 7 the day when 1,500 Israelis were brutally killed by Hamas, many thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza had been killed. It’s time for the carnage to end. It will end when we stand up for an end to the illegal Israeli occupation and the formation of a Palestinian State. I’m planning a trip to Cairo to visit Medhat and I’m sure he’d love to hear from his high school friends and other well wishers from Cazenovia. You can leave a letter or note at the Pewter Spoon Cafe and I will be happy to bring them to him. Pat Carmeli Cazenovia

In the Franks household, there are additional recipes for family togetherness which include regular face time with grandma and a child’s practice conversations in Spanish, even though grandma speaks Italian. “Close enough,” Tony says. It’s the effort and the connection that are important. And it’s that importance of being present to others that led Tony to establish her own nonprofit, Made with Love, CNY, a project that supplies a box of essentials, think underwear, hygiene and art supplies to anyone in need. The project has included the Marcellus Food Pantry for seniors, for kids and adults in Auburn and the West Genesee school district. Putting the boxes together is a family affair, as is their distribution. Everyone involved is rewarded. The recipients receive the boxes while the preparers and distributors become more keenly aware of their privileged lives while understanding the common humanity that they

all share. Tony is my physical therapist. Vertigo, dizziness and disequilibrium are all words that have been used to describe that which has kept me mostly at home for over a year. Since the causes of these maladies can be legion, I began an exhausting journey to see if anyone could pin down a way out or the amelioration of my disability. Last fall Dr. Planer told me to see a physical therapist. PT might help, he suggested. It did and more. Tony’s acumen at analysis added the “more.” Her phrase, “What is driving this bus?” is central to my tale of woe and it’s research base gave form to her approach to my dizziness, vertigo, orthostatic hypotension (there are a lot of manifestations to my instability as I alluded to above.) While walking along the east side of Evergreen cemetery, Sunday morning Howard Hayes found a grebe wallowing about in the snow. The bird appeared injured and apparently had dropped to the ground from exhaustion. Mr. Hayes carried it home and later in the afternoon took it to the S.P.C.A. shelter in Syracuse. Another was found by C.W. Darcy Saturday on the dyke. He kept it in his cellar overnight. The next day he released it and it disappeared up Rippleton creek. Still another was found in Sheds. No doubt the birds were from the same flock which had been forced down in different places due to the frozen condition of the lakes and streams. They are Northern Grebes and seldom come south of the Great Lakes but have this year as Lake Ontario is completely frozen over, some say for the first time. As a grebe cannot take off into the air except from water, the birds would have perished from starvation had they not been picked up.

Cazenovia, New Woodstock and Erieville Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts are determined to get to the World’s Fair by September. The money must be earned before then – or no trip. They can only do it with your help, which is greatly appreciated. From this date forward through the summer, a number of fund-raising activities are planned, such as cookie sales, bake sales, bottle roundups, rummage sales etc. The girls aged 12 through 17 will also be available for general assistance around the home and garden, babysitting, etc. Please support the functions, and for enthusiastic workers and general helpers call one of the Scout Leaders in your area. More details will be published later.

What’s in store for the Cazenovia Opera House? Both owner and operator say it’s too early to predict what might happen to the Lincklaen Street theater when the lease is up in last summer. The owner, Cazenovia College, is in the process of reviewing all its property holdings right now, and the Opera House is just part of the review. The operator, Lloyd Withers, said the theater operation is not making much money, despite hard work. Mr. Withers said the lease held by his father’s company, was for two years, with a two-year renewal option. The first two years will be up July 31. He said the college has mentioned that it needs space, and sent someone down to look at the building, but serious discussions of the lease have not yet begun. “I have sold the place out, but that’s an unusual situation,” Mr. Withers said. “You have to have a steady flow of people to keep it going.”

It’s impossible to say whether Swift, who does write great, catchy and memorable songs, will still have this complete power that she holds over large segments of our population decades from now. But to court the type of vast fame and popularity Swift has done carries all sorts of risks. At least there were four of the Beatles, and John Lennon still got murdered by an obsessed fan. There was only one Elvis, only one Michael Jackson – and look what happened to them, prisoners of their own legend, ultimately drowning in megalomania and ego. Simply put, at some point of ubiquity you lose the choice of getting away from the machine. Every single thing Swift does will face scrutiny, doubly so because it is a woman which has achieved what she has done and they always get judged to a harsher degree than men do. Swift has courted, and built, a massive audience of followers – Swifties, if you will – who hang on every lyric of every song and take her journey as their own. do the whole trick. I presented her with the conundrum of neck pain, which was the result of ill-disciplined (my term, I didn’t go to PT school) muscles in my neck. Sternocleidomastoids to be exact, the muscles that allow me to move my head to the side and back. Mine were so tight that I couldn’t manage those movements. Recalcitrant SCM muscles also, according to Dr. Google can lead to: Headaches, nausea, dizziness, vertigo, ear pain and more. Now Tony knew what to do to relieve the daunting symptoms and even more important how to teach me to intervene on my own. Slowly but surely, a mixture of techniques began to show positive results... but it wasn’t just addressing the muscles themselves. Rather, Tony, using the idea behind her favorite phrase explored possible causes that contributed to my muscle mania. I learned how to better use my

An integral part of the process is the dialog between the therapist and the patient, uncovering the symptoms, the relationship between symptoms and between life’s daily activities. What’s driving the bus? The answers were more appropriately answers to “What multiple things are driving this bus?” And so, between Tony’s expert manipulations and my learnings, we discussed how to make meringue cookies, how meaningful it is to share from privilege, the importance of family and to be open to learning new things, doing the research to find out who, what or how many are driving the bus to what destinations. There is one thing I believe we all can agree on…something is wrong and LIV Golf has turned the Game of Golf, as we knew it just 3 years ago, completely upside down! Two years ago, I believed the Tour had a “fever” and would completely recover in a short period of time. Last year, I was certain they needed “stitches” and I was going to volunteer my services to “stitch them up” so they could continue to dominate the world stage of golf. Today, I am begging them to get an “operation” as soon as possible so they have six - 9 months to recover and have the strength and motivation to resolve their differences with LIV Golf. You may recall, when Jay Monaghan announced last Summer he had met with LIV Golf and they would have an agreement by the end of 2023, I wrote a column predicting that would not happen and that negotiations would continue well into 2024. When John Rahm announced he was joining Liv Golf on December 7, 2023, most of the 70 million golfers, world wide, heard about it within 12 hours. The implications of his decision on the negotiations between the PGA Tour and Liv Golf gave Liv an advantage that can not be underestimated. What we didn’t know was that Jay Monaghan was also working behind the scenes to find financial partners to support the PGA Tour. He was successful. The Strategic Sports Group (SSG), which includes individuals with over 200 years of combined ownership of teams in the NFL, NBA, MLB, and EPL, formed and launched “PGA TOUR Enterprises with approximately a $3 billion dollar investment. That’s all you need to know for now. Unfortunately, if you want to know the details of the deal, you won’t find any…anyware! Oh, the printed words sound like a marriage made in heaven, but no one is “squealing” about the “real deal”. So, what happens now with the negotiations between Liv Golf and the PGA Tour? One thing is for sure, because Jay Monaghan pulled off the new partnership with SSG, the PGA Tour is now dealing from a position of “strength” (money power) when negotiating resumes. In the “short term” Jay is enjoying his glass of wine

admirable. Yet what will happen when Swift does something human, like we’ve all done, and strays from the ideal she has crafted? Though we’d hope there would be forgiveness and understanding, that’s not the track record, as those from Judy Garland to Britney Spears have experienced. There always reaches a point where constant love and adoration turns into something else. A handful of kids who screamed at the Beatles burned their records two scant years later when one of them had the nerve to comment on religion. As always, it’s best for us not to look for total wisdom or total certainty from any person, famous or otherwise. Leave room for the same kind of humanity you would ask for yourself if put in the same position. In the late 20 th or early 21 st century, we have shown a tendency to project all of our hopes and dreams in pop idols. The thing is, as the Beatles once discovered and Taylor Swift may yet discover, dreams don’t last, and the trick is to stay centered once you wake up.

and a fine Cuban cigar. Both sides can even claim victory for winning a few battles here and there over the last two years. However, I believe the true winner of the “WAR” will not be determined until the 2025 season because of the following information that both sides have received from the National Golf Foundation: * Rounds played are up 20% since 2019 (pandemic)…an all time high of 531 Million. * More than 90% of golfers expect to play as much or more in 2024. * “Green Grass” (golf course) participation hit 26.6 million in 2023 - the biggest single-year jump since the Tiger Slam in 2001. * Sixty percent of the growth since 2019 has been female participation. * Play by youth is up 40% while people of color play is up 27% over the same period. * Alternative forms of the game like Top Golf are up 130% which is increasing the number of total golfers to 45 million. * The greatest increase in number of rounds played during the week is Monday - Thursday. I wonder how your boss feels about that? GOLF IS BOOMING! Who wants to watch a WAR when things are great?…NOBODY! Who wants YOU to enjoy the upcoming season more than anyone?…The PGA TOUR AND LIV GOLF! One of my favorite tunes when I was a kid growing up in Rochester, NY was sung by Judy Garland. It was called “Get Happy”. The lyrics tell the tale of the drama taking place between the PGA Tour vs. Liv Golf and the first verse tells us how to cope with all the nonsence. Caz boys indoor track wins big at sectional meet by Phil Blackwell

Against its peers, the Cazenovia boys indoor track and field team turned out to have no one that was close to them in terms of depth and quality - or results. The Lakers stormed to the Section III Class B-2 championship last Wednesday night at SRC Arena, not letting up until it had scored 194 points to pull far away from Clinton, who was second with 71 points. Cazenovia swept the relays, starting with a 4x400 where Jaden Kaplan, Tristan Field-Bradley, Eliot Comeau and Finn Worthington tore to a time of three minutes, 47.14 seconds, well clear of Solvay’s second-place 3:56.99. Then, in the 4x800, Eddie Comeau, Ethan Camp, Jake Woolbert and Caleb Gilmore won it in 9:07.87, more than 20 seconds clear of the field, and to close the night in the 4x200 Worthington, Kaplan, Wyatt Scott and Braden Carnahan went 1:36.90 to beat Solvay’s 1:39.22. There was a 1-2 individual finish in the 55meter hurdles, Braden Carnahan winning it in 8.60 seconds to beat out Connor Frisbie’s 8.77, while in the high jump Eliot Comeau soared past 6 feet 1 inches, topping Frisbie’s secondplace 5’10” as Judah Ossont was fourth with 5’6”. Close in other events, Frisbie was able to win

the triple jump, his top leap of 44’2” ahead of a chasing pack that included Ossont finishing fourth with 39’6” and Scott fifth with 38’9”. Kaplan won on his own, too, going 1:26.77 in the 600-meter run to edge Solvay’s Ole Matyiuk (1:26.79) by two-hundredths of a second as Field-Bradley finished fourth in 1:31.21. Comeau stepped up and, in the 300-meter dash, beat out Worthington, 38.21 seconds to 38.59, just ahead of Field-Bradley (39.51) in fifth place. Woolbert landed in second place in the 3,200meter run in a season-best 10:08.82, with Will Galton sixth (11:12.20) and Evan Molloy eighth (11:34.89). In the 1,600, Woolbert’s 4:48.92 was just behind Clinton’s John Musante (4:46.55) backed by Alex Neis (5:19.81) in fifth place. Killian Blouin, contending in the pole vault, cleared 11 feet, the same as Clinton’s Rowan Dawes, but settled for second place as Gilmore topped 10 feet for fourth place. Scott’s long jump of 20’9” was a close second to Canastota’s Kole Otts (21’2 1/4”) as Carnahan was third with 20’5”. Back on the oval, Gilmore went 2:49.60 in the 1,000-meter run, a close second to Skaneateles’ Tritan Boucher (2:48.93), with Eddie Comeau third in 2:51.27 and Camp (2:55.47) in fifth place. Jonathan Sweet had a third-place weight

The Cazenovia boys indoor track and field team won the Section III Class B-2 championship Wednesday at SRC Arena, with the Lakers amassing 194 points, well clear of second-place Clinton’s total of 71, and featuring a sweep of all three relays – the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800. throw of 48’5”, while Ethan Burry was sixth with 40’11” ahead of David Tugaw in eighth (33’11”) and Finnegan Gleeson in ninth (31’6”). Also, Burry was fourth in the shot put, heaving it 37’7”, with Sweet (36’ 1/2”) in sixth place. Charlie Compeau earned points in the 55-meter dash, finishing sixth in 7.25 seconds as Aidan Jurgens was ninth (7.30) and Matt Tugaw 10th (7.34). Up in the sectional Class B-1 meet, Chittenango finished sixth among girls teams with 33 points, the Bears also getting 12 points on the boys side. Sophia DiGennaro went 3:16.65 for second

place in the 1,000 and Hannah Wagner was second in the 55 sprint in 7.61 seconds, with Laura Powers third in the 1,500 in 5:24.81 and Wagner fourth in the long jump with 15’7”. Ava McLean was fifth and Emily Judd sixth in the 3,000-meter run, with Allie Bartoszek seventh in the 55 hurdles and the Bears fourth in the 4x800 for its best relay finish. The boys Bears had Sean Eiffe finish second in the shot put, his toss of 44’7” only trailing the 47’4 1/4” from Central Valley Academy’s Logan Hewitt. Robert Pierce was sixth in the 300 in 40.63 seconds, with Chittenango fifth in the 4x800.

Caz girls win at sectionals by Phil Blackwell

No matter where one turned during last Wednesday night’s Section III Class B-2 championships at SRC Arena, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team was imposing its will, and leaving the field far behind. The Lakers won the program’s 10th sectional championship in overwhelming fashion, netting 222 points to pull far away from runner-up Clinton (67 points) and nine other challengers. Between eight titles in individual events and victories in all three relays, the Lakers lived up to the cliché of a total team effort. Susie Pittman led the way for Cazenovia with three individual titles, capturing first in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, adding a high jump victory by topping 5 feet and, to cap it off, a personal-best triple jump of 34’10 1/4”. But Pittman had plenty of help in all three events with Tara Pratt taking third in the vault at 7’6”, Meghan Mehlbaum earning second in the high jump at 4’10” and Claire Marris placing second in the triple jump by going 32’6”.

Izzy Stromer-Galley also had a banner night, winning the 300-meter dash in a personal best 44.37 seconds, taking second in the 55 meter dash at 7.66 and anchoring the 4x200 meter relay to victory in 1:53.01. Teammate Reid McMurtrie was second in the 300 at 45.42, while Audie Spring (7.86) and Pratt (8.04) were close behind in the 55 and Marris, Dinah Gifford and Caroline Mehlbaum all contributed to the winning relay. McMurtrie added first place finishes of her own as she won the 600-meter run in 1:44.73 and anchored the 4x400 to the gold medal with a 1:02.0 leg. Maura Phillips took second in the 600 at 1:47.52, while Ava Eno, Margaret Huftalen and Meghan Mehlbaum all helped the relay to its victory in 4:22.53. Olivia Ruddy was the Lakers’ other individual champion on the track, taking first in the 1,000-meter run in 3:16.32. She returned to also lead the team in the 1,500, where she was fourth in 5:31.80 as Abbie Comeau was sixth (5:34.39) and Zoey Gagne seventh in 5:43.36. Capping off her day, Ruddy anchored the 4x800 relay to its victory in 10:38.70 overall.

The Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team earned 222 points to roll to the Section III Class B-2 championship last Wednesday night at SRC Arena, the program’s 10th overall sectional title. Maeve McGreevy and Sally Hughes placed third (3:24.99) and fourth (3:32.97), respectively, in the 1,000 as the Lakers racked up 20 points in the event overall, while McGreevy also contributed to the 4x800 victory with Lily Kogut (2:36.1) and Phillips (2:36.0) running the fastest legs for the team. Maddy Rothfeld earned an individual title in the shot put with a personal best throw of 33’9” to just beat out the 33’5” from Lowville’s Maya Laribee. Rothfeld also smashed her own school record in the weight throw by more than a foot, capturing third with an effort of 37’4” Spring took her turn at the front, too, winning the long jump with a personal-best 15’10

1/2”, the Lakers dominating the event as Pratt took third in 15’4 1/4” and Alyssa Wardellw as fourth at 15’1”, another 20-point performance. Abbie Comeau led the team in the 3,000, earning third in 11:51.77 with Dinah Gifford (fifth, 11:58.73) and Haylee Stearns (sixth, 12:26.14) also scoring for the Lakers. Marris was a triple scorer for Cazenovia, adding in a third-place 9.44 in the 55 hurdles as Caroline Mehlbaum was close behind for fifth place in 10.29. Cazenovia will move on to Wednesday’s Section III State Qualifier Meet, with athletes eligible for the elite competition in 11 events.

Cazenovia boys basketball team falls to Phoenix by Phil Blackwell

Cazenovia boys basketball hosted Phoenix last Tuesday night at Buckley Gym, looking for a regular-season sweep after beating the Firebirds on the road back on Jan. 12. And it could not have started better for the Lakers, who tore to a 19-5 advantage by the end of the first quarter, only to immediately see Phoenix start to catch up.

By the time the fourth quarter started, it was 48-42, but the Firebirds stormed into the lead and stayed there, prevailing 65-61 despite a monstrous night from Ben Bianco. Hitting on 15 field goals, three of them 3-pointers, Bianco finished with 38 points, a new career mark, but none of his teammates reached double figures as Izaak Gilbert had nine points and Edmond Richardson eight points. Phoenix won behind 21 points from

Lincoln Kersey and 19 points from Nate Fortman. Cazenovia then made it back-to-back wins on Friday night, fighting past Homer 61-57 in overtime. Trailing 17-11 after one period, the Lakers made up most of the ground by halftime and took the lead in the third, only to have the Trojans battle back and, tying it 51-51, force the OT.

But Cazenovia outscored Homer 10-6 in that four-minute extra period as Bianco got most of his 20 points from four 3-pointers. Richardson connected three times beyond the arc on his way to 16 points, while Tanner Lawson stepped up and got 15 points. A Thursday-night trip to Jordan-Elbridge completes the regular season for the 9-10 Lakers.

Caz girls basketball goes 1-1, gets win over Hannibal by Phil Blackwell

Having claimed its Madison County battle with Chittenango at the start of February, the Cazenovia girls basketball team hoped it would translate to a bit more success the rest of the regular season. During last Tuesday’s game against state Class B no. 12-ranked Phoenix at Buckley Gym, the Lakers were unable to keep face with

the Firebirds, taking a 57-35 defeat. These two sides had played Jan. 10 at Phoenix and Cazenovia had kept it close in a 50-40 loss, but here the Firebirds, led by Lyla Duskee (15 points), Miley Esposito (12 points) and Hannah Caltabiano (11 points), controlled it from the start and built a 46-25 lead through three quarters. When the Lakers were able to convert, Ella Baker equaled Duskee’s total of 15 points,

while Avaya Weismore stepped up with 10 points, but the rest of the team had just four combined field goals. Cazenovia had a far better showing on Thursday night, hosting Hannibal and leaning on different aspects of its game to earn a 45-30 victory. Defense carried the Lakers through the first half as it held Hannibal to just nine points in the first two periods. Then, even as the visi-

tors began to convert, Cazenovia answered it in the third quarter and extended its lead. Baker, for the second game in a row, finished with 15 points. Bess Johnson nearly matched her, getting 14 points for the third time this season as Weismore contributed eight points. Cazenovia’s trips to LaFayette and Syracuse Academy of Science early this week will finish its regular-season slate as Chittenango goes to East Syracuse Minoa on Thursday night.

Cazenovia hockey team beats RFA, finishes third in Division I by Phil Blackwell

The Cazenovia ice hockey team has real reason to think it can make a serious run in the Section III playoffs. Last Tuesday night at Kennedy Arena, when the Lakers took on state Division I no. 11-ranked Rome Free Academy and, led by Rhiley Montoya’s hat trick, topped the Black Knights 6-3. Montoya scored just 2:15 into the game, assisted by Henry Miller and Shamus Newcomb. RFA had a 2-1 lead late in the first period, only to have Montoya answer 38 seconds after the second goal to pull his side even going into the intermission. Early in the second, John Sharrino’s goal pushed the Black Knights back in front 3-2, but it would not score again, Cazenovia’s de-

enough,” Benedict said. DiFulvio said the district has considered constructing a new facility at another location, including the Fenner Field complex or in a location behind the village DPW facility. The

fense protecting its side well and Ezra Stahlberg finishing with 17 saves. Newcomb tied game again 3-3 at the 5:27 mark of the second, Jack Donlin assisting on the power-play goal, and seconds later a twoon-on-break led to Miller, off a feed from Montoya, putting the go-ahead goal past RFA netminder Donte Sparace. Within two minutes, it was 5-3, Donlin taking his turn with a high shot that was the result of a turnover forced by Jake Hightchew, who got credit for the assist. Before RFA could really recover from this surge, Montoya returned and, with a minute left in the second, beat Sparace for his third goal of the night, Newcomb and Donlin on the assists. Neither side would add to their total in

the third period. Donlin’s two assists ran his career total to 88. In doing so, Donlin broke the program record of 87 set by Sean Cannizzaro from 2007 to 2011 before a college lacrosse career that included an NCAA championship in 2015 at the University of Denver . Finn Hagan and Vinny Dinatale also got credit for assists. Then, Thursday at Ontario Bay, Cazenovia blanked the Storm 5-0, getting in front with Miller’s first-period goal, then extending the lead to 3-0 when Donlin converted on powerplay and short-handed goals in the second. Those were Donlin’s 24th and 25th goals on the season, the most by any Cazenovia players since Brian Gara’s 48 in the state championship season of 2010-11.

Montoya then wrapped it up with back-toback third-period goals. Lucas Cornish got two assists as Donlin, Montoya and Miller each got one assist and Stahlberg stopped all 23 shots he faced. As a follow-up on Friday night, Cazenovia faced Ithaca at Cass Rink, and all the energy put into the previous two games dissipated as the Lakers fell 8-2 to the Little Red. It was 2-2 through one period, thanks to goals by Hagan and Dylan George, but Ithaca took charge from there, netting six unanswered goals against a weary Lakers side playing its third game in four nights. Still, Cazenovia’s regular season concluded at 13-6-1 and with that all-important no. 3 seed playoff seed.

Empire Tractor facility on Route 20 could also be purchased or leased and converted into a bus garage. The district is also in discussions with neighboring districts about sharing a transportation facility, but that could present challenges for the state’s transportation aid formula, which

only reimburses districts for miles driven after the first child is picked up. Using another district’s facility 10 or 15 miles away would increase miles driven and transportation costs. DiFulvio shared with the board a list of recommendations for the bus garage, including either the repair or replacement of the lift, the

investigation of new locations, the development of a capital emergency repair fund and the development of a working plan “for some of these repairs that have gone unaddressed.” No immediate action was taken by the board on Monday night.
