Eagle is a wonderful place live – excellent houses and schools, green spaces, parks and playgrounds, proximity to the foothills and the gateway to Cascade. It’s safe and friendly, and the small downtown has an enjoyable, accessible mix of shopping, coffee shops, and restaurants.

There’s a wide range of housing options where we are missing some segments. If you’re a professional family looking for a nice home, there are plenty of options. But what about young families just starting their careers? Or empty nesters looking to downsize and simplify – but not leave eagle? Options are few and far between.

For these reasons, I was happy to hear of Warrior Park located near Eagle High School. We’re a few years away from the empty for sure, but I can see that on the horizon. I want to maintain close proximity to the many connections I’ve made here, and stay within the well-known boundaries and culture of our small city-town.

When I began to look more at the project I saw two additional benefits: a good-sized park in the safest of spots, and immediate proximity to a new commercial space we can only hope turns into a healthy food option and could also benefit EHS students. We were also happy to find out that one of the plots is the future home of a wounded warrior, donated through the 208Cares charity. It’s pleasing to see so many people supporting the soldiers who’ve given so much to defend our freedom.

Additionally, as a parent of a current EHS student and one graduated, I’m aware of the shortcomings the school lunch programs have been boxed into by federal overreach. As a result, there’s a flood of kids leaving the school for other food options.

It’s costly and I’m not keen to teens rushed to drive back and forth to Fred Meyer or further. So, that’s my pitch for someone to tap into the need and build sandwich shop on the commercial lot(s).

Talk about proximity to the market! And today there’s only one food option on Hwy 44 between Eagle Road…and Star!

Potatoes go well with steak and the Idaho Beef Council can give you a recipe for success with your next dinner party featuring prime cuts of Idaho beef. “The first step to saving at home is to understand how and when you use electricity,” said Blake Watson, Idaho Power Community Relations Representative, who has lived in Eagle since 1992 and worked for Idaho Power for 33 years. “Registering for myAccount at idahopower.com and checking your use regularly is an easy way to begin.” According to Watson, the next step might be a professional inhome energy audit (available for a reduced fee). An audit will provide recommendations for increasing energy savings, and suggestions for various energy efficiency improvements, such as energy saving light bulbs provided at no additional cost. The items installed during the audit can reduce an average home’s energy use by up to 5 percent. A typical residential customer uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month on average. You may be able to save up to 600 kWh per year depending on the condition of your home and the number of improvements installed.

Idaho Power has a few tips for energy efficiency during the winter months. Open the curtains and blinds on sunny days to let the sun warm your home. Close curtains and blinds at night to trap heat inside. Look for air leaks around windows and doors. Caulk windows and add weather stripping to doors and seal other leaks to reduce drafts and keep the warm air inside your home. You may want to check your duct system and all joints for air leaks—or have a professional do it. If you choose to repair duct leaks yourself, use duct mastic, not duct tape. Vacuum registers, baseboard heaters and furnace air returns to remove any dust that might be blocking airflow and reducing the effectiveness of your system. Clean or replace your furnace filter. Have a professional service your heating equipment.

Set your thermostat at 68 degrees when you are home and 55 degrees when you go to sleep or leave the house for extended periods. Remember, though, that it’s best to choose a moderate setting and limit setbacks to 2-3 degrees if you have a heat pump. For each degree you turn down the thermostat in the winter, you’ll save approximately three to five percent on your heating costs. idahopower.com

CWI is a public, open access, and comprehensive community college committed to providing affordable access to quality teaching and learning opportunities to residents in western Idaho. Boise was the last metropolitan area in the U.S. to have a community college. In March 2007, the Idaho Legislature appropriated funds for the college and in May voters in Canyon and Ada counties voted to form a community college district. Quitting smoking is an excellent way to protect your health as well as those you come into contact with. Project Filter works to educate the public about the resources available to help individuals quit using tobacco. Project Filter’s website notes that smoking kills more people in Idaho than alcohol, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined. About 4 people die from smoking-related diseases every day. About 10% of Idaho high school students smoke, 61,000 children are exposed to secondhand smoke at home and 30,200 youth are projected to ultimately die from smoking.

Those you love and work with are affected by smoking. People who live with a smoker have a 20% greater risk of developing lung cancer than those who live with a nonsmoker. Employees exposed to secondhand smoke on the job have a 30% greater risk of getting lung cancer than employees who work in a non-smoking environment. I

f you live in Eagle, you are likely familiar with the little church turned coffeehouse that proudly stands along Eagle Road, in the heart of our city. Rembrandt’s Coffeehouse had become a community staple since opening its doors in 2004. So what do you do when your favorite place to gather closes its doors temporarily? I, for one, ask questions.

Why, you ask? As an Idaho native, I have seen hundreds of beverage and dining establishments come and go, most not so shockingly. When a place with rave reviews and nary an empty seat shuts down, my curious nature will not let me rest until I’ve learned why.

When I discovered Rembrandt’s was closed for remodeling, I had a stronger emotional reaction than I ever would have imagined. Unanswered questions quickly filled my mind.

Why are they remodeling?

Did they change ownership?

Will they still provide the same experience?

Will they still serve coffee?

Will our favorite coffeehouse be nothing more than a memory?

To any casual observer, my somewhat panicked response may seem a bit outlandish. “It’s just another coffeehouse,” one might say. The truth of the matter is, for many, Rembrandt’s had become more than “just another coffeehouse”.

It’s where we’ve shared long conversations, built new relationships, poured out our hearts, and celebrated our lives.

It was in the fresh morning air of the patio seats one summer where I spent hours each week listening to my grandparents recount their youth and inquire about mine. The two memories are so intertwined I can hardly think of one without the other. It’s where I spent hours hammering out homework in college and even more time plugging away on my laptop as a writer. I celebrated the impending birth of my second child with family and friends pouring in, to shower us with love. I’ve soaked in the sun of the quaint patio and cozied up with a frothy latte inside the vaulted room that once housed a congregation of worshipers. It’s safe to say I’ve developed a love for this little coffeehouse that goes far beyond the product they serve.

Reopened at Last - First Impressions It was by pure happenstance that I was driving by last October and noticed cars in the parking lot again. I had an hour before I needed to be anywhere else. Overjoyed with my fortunate timing, I pulled into the parking lot, eager to rediscover the place housing so many of my memories. As I approached the old, familiar doorway, I noticed it now read Rembrandts Downtown Eagle. My anxiety began to wane.

Perhaps this namesake had maintained the charm of our much-loved coffeehouse after all. Once inside, I was delighted to find a refreshing, modern palette, and furnishings -the walls a soothing gray and the counter a crisp white stone.

It all felt so new yet reassuringly similar. The pew adorning the entryway reassured me that whatever changes were in store; the heart of this establishment remained the same.

The building, an 1800’s-era church, has a rich history and it appeared the remodel had provided some much needed updating while maintaining a few mementos in homage to the building’s original purpose.

I asked an employee the question I’m sure they’ve heard hundreds of times since reopening. I asked with nervous timbre, “Are you guys still Rembrandt’s then?” She must have sensed my unease because she quickly reassured me they are still providing coffee and a relaxing environment, with the added benefit of a dinner and wine menu. Instantly, I was sold. A place I can eat dinner and enjoy an expertly crafted cup of coffee? What’s not to love about that match made in heaven? I ordered a breakfast sandwich and a latte and settled into a booth along the far wall. Within minutes of receiving my order, I began an emotional journey where each savory bite and velvety sip took me further from the rush of my busy schedule and closer to a peaceful presence in the moment. My favorite coffeehouse was quickly becoming my favorite eatery. I knew then I wanted to learn more about this newly imaged Rembrandts Downtown Eagle so I could share my discoveries with the community.

A couple of weeks later I met with Dale Willman and CJ Cacioppo, the new owners, to ask the questions I thought Eagle residents would be asking. I was thrilled with what I learned, and I think you will be too.

New Owners and Fresh Concepts Rembrandt’s previous owners, Mark and Jeanette Priddy, in an effort to focus on their non-profit organization dedicated to empowering underserved women, offered the purchase option to one of their first employees, CJ Cacioppo. CJ had served in a management capacity upon opening and was an ideal successor to the Rembrandt’s legacy. CJ approached a long-time family friend, Dale Willman, with the offer as they’d conversed numerous times about seeking a business partnership.

They knew this was the opportunity they’d been waiting for. The two also knew they wanted to continue the heritage Rembrandt’s had established while refreshing their look and offerings. After months of construction, Rembrandt’s Coffeehouse reopened its doors as Rembrandts Downtown Eagle. A Grand Opening ceremony held in November 2016 introduced Eagle to a dinner service worth salivating over.

Sip, Savor, and Satiate One significant difference I noticed upon entry was the host’s stand, rolled into place at the end of the vestibule where a line typically forms at the counter. Dale and CJ informed me that beginning at 4:00 pm Monday through Saturday, the counter service shifts to table service for a full dinner and wine menu. I asked them what prompted the new offerings. “We felt the community of Eagle was asking for a new place to eat dinner,” said Dale. They informed me their Wine Director, Greg Neruda, took great care in listening to the desires of the surrounding community and served as the guiding light by which many offerings were decided upon.

I perused the dinner menu and peered inconspicuously at the nearby tables to

discover what culinary delights might await me. “Elegant comfort food,” is how they described their selection. Clams, Ahi Tar Tare, and Chicken and Waffles had me in firm agreement as I considered calling my husband to notify him he was on his own for dinner. The wine list, a collection of both local and noteworthy vintners, provided something for every palate.

“But what of the coffee selection?” I asked. I was curious if the emphasis on quality would be at the forefront with so many menu items contending for the spotlight. Not to be upstaged by dinner, their coffee selection is as authentic as ever. Their roaster, Artine Yapoujian, is of Armenian descent and grew up roasting coffee as a young child in Lebanon.

Now living in Boulder, CO, Artine gives back to the community through Beans and Bridges, a non-profit organization which assists growers in obtaining land ownership, primarily in locations where women rarely have equal rights.

A Community Hub The owners are intent on listening to the community to determine the types of special offerings we will experience when visiting Rembrandts Downtown Eagle. Wine clubs, live music, and the desire to accommodate special events were topics of conversation as I spoke to Dale and CJ about their plans for community enrichment.

When I asked what they’ve enjoyed most about their journey through business ownership, both spoke emphatically about the relationships they were developing and the resulting sense of community bringing them joy. During the Grand Opening service, employees decided to donate their collective tips to a family in need this Christmas. Touched

by their generosity and community spirit, Dale and CJ matched their contribution.

Looking Forward I wanted to know what was in store for the future of Rembrandts Downtown Eagle.

Would they be looking to expand or grow their offerings down the road? CJ’s response to my question was proof Rembrandts’ heart for the community was as alive as ever. “We want to produce excellence in whatever we decide to do. EAGLE YOGA HOUSE Dennis and Susan Dusho have lived in Eagle for 3 years and co-own Eagle Yoga House, which opened on June 15, 2011. Dennis says what he likes most about Eagle is that it is a “very friendly town and there are lots of healthy activities to do both in the summer and winter.” He moved from the Cleveland, Ohio, area in 2007 and enjoys the “small community” of Eagle. Dennis says his responsibility is to “keep the doors open” at Eagle Yoga House so his wife can “teach and nurture and make sure clients keep coming back.” Dennis is inspired by his wife Susan. “She brought calmness into my life. I’m inspired by giving–by the good deeds people do without expecting anything in return. It inspires you to want to do the same thing.” He shares that he worked 38 years in manufacturing which was a high stress environment.

Susan volunteers twice a month at Eagle Middle School, teaching yoga to special needs children. “The kids in the Special Ed. class are true yogis,” notes Susan. “They do not care what others think about their practice and they just move into a posture and do the best they can. Which is all we can ask of ourselves.” Susan is inspired by her students including Kevin, a retired police officer who was injured in the line of duty and needed to take an early retirement.

After 20 years on Bainbridge Island in Washington, Susan shares, “What I like most about Eagle is the people and the wide open spaces for the animals. The foothills in Eagle is one of my favorite places–it is so expansive.” Her world has expanded since she moved to Eagle. “The students have been such a blessing to me. The big hearts, vulnerability, willingness to give, work, and try their best is such an inspiration. Yoga is about creating openness and flexibility in your life and in your mind. Yoga teaches you to accept your circumstances and to embrace your possibilities.”

The personalized plan typically gives better results than a general workout plan. Gerry Tsuruda: Images of Idaho Local Photographer captures diverse landscapes over his 25+ year career

G

erry Tsuruda decided to retire to Eagle, Idaho in 2013, but the contours, nooks, and crannies of Idaho captured the imagination of this prolific photographer and his grand intention to retire was quickly dispelled. Captivated by his new home, he was excited to share his images and renewed interest and passion.

Tsuruda spent more than 25 years traveling the roadways of California documenting agricultural fields glowing golden in either California’s famous sunshine or shrouded in fog in the Central Valley. He captured the beauty of the rice paddies and preserved images of disappearing family farms. Before his departure from California, he spent a few years documenting a Sacramento area nature preserve for the Natomas Basin Conservancy, the habitat home to an endangered snake species.

Tsuruda’s latest endeavor is to capture the diversity of the land in a 30-mile circumference around his home in Eagle. The area he will cover in his 30 mile project extends to Banks, Placerville, Idaho City, Mayfield, Morey Nelson Snake River and includes Melba, Givens Hot Springs, Marsing, Homedale, and Parma. His project, called 30 Mile Island: Places Not Far from Home, proves you don’t have to travel far to find beauty and create amazing photographs. “I like to joke that it is all about being close enough to always be home in time for dinner,” says Tsuruda.

“30 MILE ISLAND is a project about home, about being grounded and looking for interesting visuals in all places, whether in a wheat field, a fish hatchery, or a neighbor’s yard. For me, it’s that simple.”

“I use manual controls on a fairly unsophisticated camera. I use two interchangeable lenses and no filters. My only other tool is a tripod and occasionally a rickety ladder. I use a baseball cap to shield my lens from unwanted sun flare. It doesn’t always work. I never leave sight of my car. That is my photographic life.”

“The thing that makes 30 Mile Island work is the diversity of Eagle and its surroundings. So much to experience, from open land to water to mountains to trees, from sporting life to a healthy art culture. The only thing missing is the ocean, but I am willing to accept that. My photographic findings are often serendipitous, in that I often have a destination in mind, but seldom seem to end up there. Something on the way often catches my eye.”

“Although 30 Mile Island is a project for all seasons, I have found winter to be especially inviting. In exchange for a bit of physical discomfort, I have enjoyed photographing snow, ice, fog, and the sense of isolation that is winter. It is also special because

PHOTOS BY GERRY TSURUDA this project idea was spawned by some early successes in photographing in the elements in the winter of 2015. “ “I started taking photographs in the early 1980s. I literally did not touch a camera of any kind until the age of 33. The equipment left to me by my long departed father sat untouched in the closet until that time. My father had tried to interest me in photography early on, but I showed no interest. I wish I could relive those moments.”

After an introductory photography class in Orange County, California, Tsuruda was hooked. After fifteen years as a computer analyst, and a decade as a serious hobbyist, Tsuruda finally became a professional. The work he is proudest of is a photo-documentary called “Silent Harvest – The Disappearance of the Family Farm.”

“The single most influential element of my photographic awakening was our move to Yuba City in 1987, a grand departure from the hustle and crowding of Los Angeles. Photographing in the relative isolation of rural California was therapeutic and opened up a new world of subject matter. I will always take great joy in discovering scenes that have been largely unrecorded by other photographic footprints.”

“Home is Eagle, Idaho, a lovely place. Eagle is still bordered by farms and maintains that sense of open spaces. It is tranquil and quite beautiful. It is very family-friendly and a great place to retire. My modus operandi is to take short trips here and there, looking for design in whatever corners of the small radius they may occur. Leave home, return home. Repeat.”

Tsuruda is not just another California transplant. His mother was born in Idaho, but lived most of her long life in California. “Now her ashes have returned to her birth state. It was my destiny to bring her back home. After moving to Eagle I discovered that my cousin is married to a descendent of the founder of Eagle, Thomas Aikens.”

“And now Eagle, Idaho and its surrounding environs are calling.

A mix of rolling desert landscape, major waterways, cascading rapids, winding mountain trails, rural communities, and a vibrant capital city - these are my new digs.” Not a bad life for a guy who didn’t pick up a camera until the age of 33.

An adventure awaits forty-five minutes from Eagle

I

daho is a paradise for the adventurous, and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River is Willi Cannell’s playground. Cannell, owner of Solitude River Trips, provides full service, allinclusive fly fishing and rafting trips exclusively on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

People from all over the world are discovering the remote and rugged mountains and dynamic rivers of central Idaho. The Middle Fork of the Salmon River runs through the center of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. At 2.3 million acres, this is the largest roadless wilderness area in the lower 48 states. Known for its scenic beauty and crystal clear water, this river flows south to north over the span of 100 miles. Historian Arthur Hart, in Life in Eagle, Idaho, wrote that Woods trained pilots under the Civilian Pilot Training program, “a federal effort to have enough fliers ready should America be dragged into the European War, then in its second year.”

The dirt runway airport saw property damaged and lives lost in 1944, when a bomber crashed while attempting an emergency landing, Holm wrote.

In Eagle, Woods was farther from backcountry action that was seen at hubs like McCall, Grangeville and Missoula but was closer to many people who wanted to take his-affordable flying lessons. He also was close to his Garden City vending and jukebox enterprise.

His Staggerwing Beech biplane was faster than most backcountry pilots’ planes – boosting his financial prospects as well as his accident risk, as it wasn’t designed for short takeoffs and landings, Holm said.

Idaho Aviation Hall of Fame President Joe Corlett said Woods, inducted in 2000, was one of the “old stick-and-rudder guys” who relied on “airmanship” instead of technology. “They were very adept at making the airplane do what they wanted it to do.”

uthor Richard Holm, Jr. recalls the origins of the Floating Feather Airport and its owner’s peculiar aviation style in his book Bound for the Backcountry: A History of Idaho’s Remote Airstrips. Willis M. “Bill” Woods, born December 12, 1901, became an Idaho aviation legend by teaching aspiring military and private pilots, hauling people and cargo into the backcountry, and learning from his mistakes. It was his frequent poor landings, however, during which he described he “floated down the runway like a feather” during a 1969 newspaper interview that inspired the naming of the airport.

Woods had accidents in the backcountry – estimates range from 17 to 23, according to Holm – once making a log raft to transport an entire airplane down the Middle Fork Salmon River to Indian Creek Airstrip for repairs and another time wrecking at Root Ranch in the Salmon River Mountains. The latter incident prompted him to write “The Do’s and Don’ts of Mountain Flying” for inclusion with Idaho aeronautics maps.

He was eccentric, usually flying with two wire-haired terriers and eventually embracing the “Old Man of the Mountains” title, Holm said in an interview.

In aviation’s growth years, Garden City’s Bradley Field and Strawberry Glen Airport had mining and helicopter business ties, respectively, according to Paul Freeman’s

“Most pilots tend to be reserved about their accidents and incidents, but Bill Woods wanted other pilots to learn from his mistakes and his experiences,” Holm said.

“The Floating Feather Airport had an interesting history and was associated with the City of Eagle for years,” longtime resident Weldon Fisher noted in handwritten recollections filed at Eagle Historical Museum. A factor in an ultimate decline in traffic was greater demand for improved runways as aircraft were replaced, he wrote.

Woods liquidated much of his inventory around 1972, Holm wrote, two years prior to his death on March 23, 1974.

On Feb. 8, 1994, the Eagle City Council annexed 95 acres of the site, Hart wrote.

where the stars align At the Sun Valley Film Festival

A

three hour drive from Boise, Sun Valley is the home of a world-class ski resort and an up-and-coming film festival which promotes local talent and hosts internationally known movie stars such as Clint Eastwood, Bruce Dern, and Jodie Foster.

Sun Valley has had a relationship with Hollywood since the 1930s when Averell Harriman invited film stars like Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and Claudette Colbert to his ski resort. Today, Hollywood notables and movie buffs alike have another reason to visit Sun Valley thanks to screenwriter Teddy Grennan, producer of Coming Through the Rye and Among Ravens. Grennan visited Sun Valley when he was between jobs a few years ago, and thought the famous mountain resort would be an ideal location for a film festival.

“I called a couple of friends of mine,” remembers Grennan.

“They said there’s film festivals everywhere. And I said there isn’t one in Sun Valley.”

Now in its sixth year, the Sun Valley Film Festival is open to filmmakers and moviegoers alike. The lineup at SVFF is eclectic. “The biggest challenge is to get the distributors and studios to recognize the value of sending their films to Sun Valley,” states Grennan, SVFF executive director. “The marketing of these films, where they go, to what film festivals, is really important. The lineup here continues to be a lot like

Candice Pate, SVFF Director, notes that attendance at the festival has grown and it has had a tangible impact on Wood River Valley’s economy. “Our first year, we generated a $1.2 million economic impact. The second year, it was $2.4 million. It went to $3.4 million in year three and last year it was over $5.4 million,” states Pate. “That’s something that everybody in the region can be very proud of.”

Laura Mehlhaff, Director of Programming for SVFF, encourages Idaho screenwriters and filmmakers to enter the One Potato Short screenplay competition, which was developed to support emerging filmmakers and incentivize filmmaking in Idaho. The winner of the screenplay competition will receive $5,000 to bring a script to life by filming on location in Idaho. The winning script of 15 pages or less must be filmed in Idaho.

Other contests include the High Scribe Award, which is for feature length screenplays; the short film lab for writers of short screenplays of 10 pages or less; and the Future Filmmakers Forum for young filmmakers in grades 7 through 12.

The Sun Valley Film Festival has something for everyone.

“We celebrate varied aspects of film culture, and showcase films from hard-to-find indie gems to arthouse theater stalwarts,” shares Mehlhaff. “Between the films, panels, guest speakers, parties and other events, people of all interests tend to find something that resonates. While there are all-inclusive passes for those who want to participate in everything, we have plenty on the docket that is either free or sold on an individual ticket basis.”

The Coffee Talks series is often hailed as the ‘crown jewel’ of the festival. The Coffee Talks are always free and open to the public. It’s a chance to hear from dynamos in the world of film regarding their experiences and what they’ve learned along the way, as well as an interactive Q&A session. Past coffee talks have featured Academy Award winning screenwriter David Seidler, Oliver Stone, and Kevin Smith. The SVFF organizers feel it’s important that filmmakers and film lovers are able to participate in the festival.

He had some advice for filmmakers and screenwriters and for life in general. “Don’t use up your writing energy working as a journalist or teaching. Learn a craft–become a plumber. Pace yourself. Don’t win an Oscar when you are too young.” At the age of 74, Seidler was the oldest winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for The King’s Speech. A British-American, he related that he wrote to the Queen Mother to ask her permission to write the story about George VI, and she requested that he not do it in her lifetime. He had to wait 25 years until she died at 103.

He shared some advice from Francis Ford Coppola. “‘Don’t start a script until you know the end.’ You need to know where you are going. You need to know the destination before you start a trip. Know where you are going and who you want to be. Keep in shape, floss twice a day and get out of the house and go to a gym.”

“Don’t get divorced. Keep your marriage whole. If you are going to get divorced do it quickly and do it when you’re young.” He noted a thing that agents are good for–they have a good information network and should be able to

tell you if something is already in development. He shared some advice from George Bernhard Shaw. “If you want to have a serious message, always have humor.” Seidler pointed out that when doing a true story or biography you have to research your subject heavily. But “people don’t live life in a 3 act structure so you have to do modifications.” He does a lot of rewriting and writes every day. After an initial draft, Seidler goes back 20 to 30 pages and rewrites. “Keep writing.

It’s the only way to learn. The most important script you will write is the script of your life.”

agle’s North Star Charter School received a boost of funding through their first annual fund campaign, successfully raising $77,525 for new technology in the classrooms.

The North Star community of parents, staff and friends generously contributed to the annual fund, in record amounts, resulting in tremendous future learning opportunities for the students. The successful campaign enabled North Star to purchase new laptops, Chromebooks and iPads for the classroom as well as new robotic kits for the computer science curriculum. In addition, the campaign provided funding for critical professional development for teachers regarding the use of technology in the classroom.

Shirley Rau, North Star English teacher within the school’s International Baccalaureate program, is thrilled with the opportunities afforded to the students through the generous donations of the North Star community. Naomi Preston, who runs Wild West Eatery and Cantina in old downtown Eagle, credits fresh local beef and innovative creations as grounds for making the claim of best burgers.

“We get our meat from The Porterhouse, a local meat shop here in town,” Naomi said.

“It’s fresh ground chuck, never frozen, and we hand-make our patties.”

Those patties are cradled in house-made challah buns, which enhance all the flavors.

“It’s the whole package,” she said.

The challah bread is also used for their French toast, which “we’re really known for, too, and we also use it for out bread bowls.”

Their bakery is their foundation, she said, and Wild West is well known for their “world famous sticky buns,” which

they’ve been making since the restaurant’s inception in 1994. Thick and melt-in-yourmouth tender, they’re coated in a unique, secret sauce that involves cream and brown sugar, among other ingredients.

If you like a drink with your meal, Wild West offers margaritas, bloody mary’s, mimosas, and champagne, as well as a house wine and several varieties of beer.

They offer catering and space for private parties.

Naomi said she and her two chefs — Bryon Prevost and Jeremy Hobbs — take pride in taking the dining experience to the next level, creating new ideas along the way. You won’t find marionberry scones in many other restaurants, Naomi says.

“I have a passion for excellence in everything I do,” she said. “I want to provide my customers with a great experience. Everyone’s on a budget these days, and you don’t want to go out for mediocre.”

“People order them by the dozens for the holidays,” she said.

The name of the restaurant is apropos of Eagle’s old western heritage. Naomi, a horse aficionado, once raised a lame wild mustang she adopted from a Bureau of Land Management pen to a national champion. The filly, known as Mustang Lady — a name she adopted as her own persona — won the 1990 national championship in endurance riding, and the triple crown for the Race of Champions, Tevis and North American Championship.

“She beat hundreds of purebred Arabians in this sport,” Naomi said. “She was a oncein-a-lifetime horse.”

The mustang was her inspiration for the name of her restaurant, which was once known as Wild West Bakery and Espresso.

The Right to read and write Learning Lab, Inc

T

here are many people in our community who can’t read this sentence. But they are finding help from the Learning Lab, Inc. “Learning Lab began in 1991 as an adult literacy project of the Junior League of Boise to address the needs of the workforce of the future,” shares Ann Heilman, Executive Director, Learning Lab. “We began with one employee, who was the teacher as well. There were 4 students and 4 volunteer tutors. Classes began on the 4th floor of the Boise Public Library, but as the number of volunteers and students increased rapidly, more space was needed.

Within a few years, we added a family literacy program where adult students could bring their young children with them and learn together. With generous financial support from the community, a second facility, The Anna Margaret Jones Center for Learning, was opened in Garden City in 2006. In 2014, classes expanded to include the Library! at Cole & Ustick. In 2016, a new Outreach program began to offer classes for low-income neighborhood apartments. Over the past 25 years, we have provided basic skills education to more than 3,500 students.”

Heilman became involved with the Learning Lab in July 2007. “Everyone deserves the chance to learn to read and write.” She points out that being illiterate causes isolation and numerous problems, including not being able to understand instructions from a doctor or fill out application forms, or be able to read and sign permission slips for their kids to go on field trips. For Heilman, literacy is a social justice issue. “Education is the foundation for society that has freedom. Everyone should be treated with dignity and respect and be able to communicate. It’s hard to do that if you can’t read and write.”

One of the main funding sources for Learning Lab is their annual Lunch for Literacy event held on the first Friday in February. This year the guest author is Steven Rowley, author of the national bestseller, Lily and the Octopus. A popular event, the Lunch for Literacy usually sells out. Last year 920 people attended the event, which includes a silent auction of books autographed by the author as well as gift baskets and experiences built around a book. One of the highlights of the event is the presentation by a student of his/her experiences with Learning Lab.

“Learning Lab, Inc. is one of the best run and best service providing organizations I know,” states Jana Kemp, Former Learning Lab Board Member and Volunteer, Author and Facilitator, Meeting & Management Essentials. “People’s lives are positively and permanently affected! Lunch for Literacy is an amazing gathering of people supporting an organization that helps people help themselves and their children to lead better lives! Lunch for Literacy continues to present great speakers, to be an on-time event, and to provide interesting ways to participate in fundraising activities for a terrific cause: LEARNING.” “Current students often refer friends, neighbors and relatives,” shares Heilman.

“Healthcare professionals also refer students to us. We try to partner with other nonprofits such as Head Start which often brings parents to our front door.

The students are assessed and are given individual lesson plans to meet their needs.

Adults with literacy struggles may need more time in the program. Some students come from countries where they were not allowed to go to school.”

“We have 157 volunteer tutors who implement the lesson plans.

The most important things the volunteers provide is a warm welcome and individual encouragement. The volunteers and students are the heart and soul of Learning Lab. It restores my faith in humanity and reminds me how awesome this community is.”

There is special training for volunteers “but a kind heart, patience, and understanding are the first qualifications. We have an orientation session monthly called Learn About the Lab (see sidebar). We also have online training occasionally and seminars every other month.”

“Our students are my biggest source of inspiration. Our donors too, as they express their faith in our mission. President Obama, Sheryl Sandburg, Anne Lamott, Simon Sinek, Will Northrop, and Stephen Covey are a few of the incredible people who have inspired me.”

“We are always looking for opportunities to teach more classes and always looking for new venues to do so. We need to keep responding to the community’s needs.”

Heilman’s biggest challenge is fundraising and figuring out how they can expand the capacity enough to meet the needs of the community. “As the chief fundraiser, I need to know how Learning Lab can stay relevant and important to donors and find ways to gain new donors and successfully receive grants. We always have students on our waiting list for classes, which begin in September, January and June.” Often students come who want to improve their literacy skills, but the students who come for help with their GED are given priority “because they are so embarrassed. We need to get them in classes right away.”

AN ATHLETE WITH A DIFFERENT FOCUS College football player at C of I is setting a new example

T

he College of Idaho, a private liberal arts school in Caldwell, recently reinstated its football program after a 37-year hiatus. And the Coyotes’ first recruit, Marcus Lenhardt, is a perfect example of what it means to be a student athlete at the C of I. The Yotes football team was restored in 2013, joining the NAIA’s Frontier Conference for the 2014 season. Coach Mike Moroski started the team up with some fresh recruits, including many from local high schools. And his very first recruit was Lenhardt, a standout tight end from Eagle High School.

The C of I has now played three seasons since restoring the program, with Lenhardt earning All-Frontier Conference honors every year. As a junior this past fall, Lenhardt set single-season school records with 67 catches and 1,021 yards, and he also established career records with 150 receptions and 2,292 yards.

“Marcus has been fantastic. Unbelievable, really,” Moroski said.

“I knew he’d be a good player, but he’s been even better than we expected because of his competitiveness and willingness to work on weaker parts of his game. He’s just a great player who continues to get better and better.”

Moroski played quarterback for UC Davis and went on to play eight seasons in the NFL. Following his playing career, Moroski returned to UC Davis, where he spent 15 years as an assistant coach. He was hired to coach the Coyotes in January of 2013, with the goal of bringing players like Lenhardt into a program where they could excel on the field while also getting a first-class education.

“My dream was to play at Boise State,” Lenhardt said. “I found so much more at The College of Idaho than I would have at Boise State. I’m super blessed to be led in this direction.”

The C of I features small class sizes and an 11-to-1 student-tofaculty ratio, which allows students to have more one-on-one time with their professors. The C of I also leads all Idaho colleges and universities in retention and graduation rate, as noted by Forbes magazine and other national publications.

“I like that [the C of I] has pushed me to think and take classes that I would not have taken without the PEAK Curriculum,” Lenhardt said.

PEAK (which stands for professional, ethical, articulate, and knowledgeable) allows students to graduate with a major and three minors in four years. The program gives students expertise in multiple fields for better career adaptability. Lenhardt, a business major, has also taken philosophy, English, and criminal justice classes to satisfy his minors. He recently was named to the COSIDA All-District Five team, which requires a minimum 3.30 GPA. “I think Marcus is an excellent example of a scholar-athlete,” says C of I business professor Dr. Marilyn Melchiorre. “He’s very dedicated and successful, both as an athlete and as a student.”

Adds Moroski: “Marcus wants to excel in every area of life, and that’s what we want to build our program around. He’s done great things here at the C of I, and the sky is the limit for his career ahead.”

Lenhardt’s commitment to football and academics has made him dynamic both on and off the field. By taking full advantage of what The College of Idaho has to offer, he has set himself up for success after graduation.

“I’m very blessed to have had coaches and teammates who have helped me excel in this program,” Lenhardt said. “But the real reason I’m here is to get my degree—and win football games.”
