mission-centric school. Eagle Hill certainly delivers its promise to improve academic and social skills, introduce new content, and prepare students for their next school experience. But there is much more to this school and I can offer some insight into the “special sauce” this school has been serving for many years.

The common thread that weaves all our students together involves their language-based learning disability. Every student here learns differently and knows what it feels like to struggle in school, to feel unsuccessful, or feel inadequate. It is not uncommon to find there are other extenuating circumstances—such as attentional difficulties, executive functioning challenges, anxiety or social awkwardness—that deserve our full attention. This is where the magic of Eagle Hill takes full bloom as we shape confident learners who adapt to accommodate their challenges with a renewed sense of self-confidence. Just learning to read is simply not enough if the students are not learning to advocate for themselves. Our teachers are highly trained special educators grounded in the experience of unlocking young minds to find the most efficient pathway to learning success. But special educators here are not so narrowly focused on skill-training. During instructional lessons our teachers are acutely aware of social dynamics. They teach matters of personal organization and follow-through in real time, and are keenly aware of the emotional highs and lows that complicated learners often experience. In my previous schools these children would have been the responsibility of learning specialists who pulled students out of class. Here the emphasis is on “pushing in” and collaboration, while still providing individual and small group services where the need exists. This school is quite different from other special education schools. Here are some of the ways we create the special Eagle Hill experience that helps our students thrive.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES Eagle Hill has a team of five professionals – comprised of psychologists, counselors, and a social worker – who lead efforts in social-emotional learning in the classrooms. They collaborate with classroom teachers to help our students sort through challenges that may be a consequence of their disability or simply related to normal maturation. These counselors, like our teachers, are exceptionally talented and check in with individual students and with groups of students on a regular basis, but their real worth is measured through the practice of “pushing” into classes and becoming well recognized and trusted members of the teaching staff.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SERVICES We have six highly skilled Speech and Language Pathologists who operate in much the same way our counselors function—they become invested in the primary teaching staff by planning and collaborating in on-going classes, while also providing more individual instruction to students who require additional services. All new students are evaluated to determine who qualifies for services and small group instruction. In addition to classroom collaboration, parent education is also a key aspect of their work.

JUNIOR BOARDING We offer our 10-15-year-olds a five-day boarding opportunity where students live and learn together under the careful supervision of our dormitory staff. This is where students—in real time!—practice critical executive functioning skills and habits and hone their social skills as well. This program is intentionally small as we aim to create a family atmosphere that emphasizes service to others and inclusion.

EDUCATIONAL TEAMS Our Educational Coordinators and Division Leaders are key to ensuring that every child gets the exact education that they need. These administrators are teachers, coaches, parent liaisons, and so much more. They work hard to continually assess our program, to help our teachers grow and learn throughout their careers, and to get to know every student and every parent. These administrators are the glue of the program – making sure all the ingredients of the “sauce” go together and fit each child’s needs individually.

The magic of Eagle Hill takes full bloom as we shape confident learners who adapt to accommodate their challenges with a renewed sense of selfconfidence.

From my vantage point, these are powerful differentiators that distinguish Eagle Hill’s commitment to addressing every child’s full learning needs. Throughout my career, we always aspired to educate “the whole child.” This is the first school where we do just that—and truly make magic happen!

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Self-Reflection & Self-Evaluation:

CAIS Re-Accreditation As stewards of Eagle Hill School, it is the Board of Trustees’ responsibility to manage the school’s fiscal affairs prudently, conservatively, and with discipline. This imperative has never before been more critical than throughout this past year of pandemic uncertainty.

With a foundation of financial health, as well as a strong partnership with the administration, we will now work to ambitiously pursue both our near- and longterm goals.

Last year, we made some difficult decisions to ensure not only the health, safety, and well-being of the Eagle Hill community, but also the financial security of the school. For example, tuition and salaries were frozen. We temporarily suspended the Junior Boarding Program. And we significantly increased financial aid to support our families. By keeping an eagle eye on cash flows and capital expenditures, constantly reviewing the operating budget, and closely assessing the performance of our endowment, the Board, in partnership with school leadership, admirably strengthened the financial position of the school. With a foundation of financial health, as well as a strong partnership with the administration, we will now work to ambitiously pursue both our near- and long-term goals. One important near-term goal is the re-accreditation of Eagle Hill School by the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools. This is a year-long process requiring deep selfreflection and self-evaluation of the school across sixteen standards: Mission, Governance, DEIJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice), Program, Early Childhood Program, Residential Program, Resources, Experience of the Students, Faculty, Administration, Communication, Enrollment,

Evaluation and Assessment, Infrastructure, Health and Safety, and Accreditation Process. The selfstudy has already begun under the leadership of Assistant Head of School Tom Cone and Upper School Educational Coordinator Barbara McHale. As this is a peer-based accreditation process, CAIS will appoint a Visiting Team to visit our campus for final review in the fall of 2022. Together with Head of School Jim Heus, the faculty, and administration, the Board of Trustees is ready to meet the tough issues head on. Having demonstrated considerable organizational resilience this past year, we approach this school year with a renewed sense of hope and possibility. We fully anticipate that our self-study will grant us fresh thinking and a welcome shift from reactionary resilience to a broader mindset of adaptability as we embrace the most critical, future-focused work of the Board: making sure the magic of Eagle Hill School is available not only to this generation of diverse learners, but many more to come.

EAGLE HILL NEWS

s I start my second year at Eagle Hill, I find myself reflecting on my experience during the 2020-2021 school year. What stands out is how quickly I was able to see and understand just what it is that makes Eagle Hill such a special place. I had heard of Eagle Hill for many years and people often used words like “magical” “transformative” “individualized” “special” “warm” and “caring” to describe the program. Arriving during the height of the pandemic I was not sure what to expect or whether or not I’d get to experience any of that magic. But now, a year later, having gone through a complete admissions cycle, I can see where those adjectives came from. When I first started participating in the admissions process with families, I was still learning to answer that question. What sets Eagle Hill apart? What is the “magic”? As I explained the program to more and more families it became clear to me. While we focus on academic remediation and filling in what has been missed in a child’s educational experience, we value and teach so much more than that. Each and every teacher, dorm staff member, administrator, speech and language pathologist, counselor, and psychologist works to teach our students to be self-advocates. We push them to understand what they need and to ask for it. We want them to advocate both academically and socially and to develop the skills to do so with pride and confidence. We are able to do this because we focus on building relationships between students and teachers as well as peer relationships. Small classes allow students and teachers to get to know each other quickly and to feel comfortable trying out new skills. Looking around and seeing that everyone in your class is working on the same type

of skills and is in the same boat fosters that sense of safety. With the guidance of the adults around them, students are able to develop skills that they need to not just be successful academically, but in other areas of their lives as well. Families who are looking at Eagle Hill are doing so because something is not working for their child at their current school. Their journey, up to this point, has probably been an unpleasant one. Schools have not been able to put all of the educational pieces together to help support their child. There have often been many moments of uncertainty, concern, frustration and even anger as they have worked hard to navigate the world of PPTs, CSEs, IEPs, and so much more. When they come to our website, attend an open house, and sit in my office for a parent interview, they want to know what we can do differently. How is Eagle Hill going to do what other schools have not been able to do for their child? The Eagle Hill “magic” often takes effect quite quickly. A student who is new to Eagle Hill this year is in my writing class of 5 students. He mentioned that at his old school, he did not ever want to read his writing aloud because he could tell that the other kids didn’t think it was good. He said they would make faces as he read and would make it clear that they disliked what he had written. On the second day of school this year, he raised his hand and said he wanted to share his work. He said he knew that the kids in his class, here at Eagle Hill, wouldn’t do that to him. He couldn’t have been more right.

FACULTY

Meet Eagle Hill’s Magicians Melissa Ragan

Melissa Ragan started her career at Eagle Hill during the 2017 summer program and is now in her fifth year teaching in the Foundations Program. WHY DID YOU GRAVITATE TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION? I hold a degree in Elementary Education and have always loved working with young children. I student taught in a first-grade setting, and never failed to come home with silly stories from our days together. The kids always put a smile on my face! Additionally, I have very fond memories of my own first, second, and third-grade teachers who helped me to build my confidence as a student when I was younger. Since then, I have aspired to build a classroom community, which is just as warm and welcoming as the experience I was lucky enough to have when going through elementary school. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING PART OF THE EHS FACULTY? The strong sense of community and collaboration. Just walking through campus, you see many familiar, friendly faces who smile, stop to say hello,

14

.

EAGLE HILL NEWS

and ask how your day is going. We are all a team and acknowledge the need for good rapport and collaboration in order to achieve our common goal of helping our students to succeed. WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES THE FOUNDATIONS PROGRAM SPECIAL? Many times, we have been the first stepping stone of a student’s path here at Eagle Hill. Currently, our program includes 21 energetic, creative, silly, absolutely wonderful children. Because our classes stick together throughout the entire day, over the course of the school year, the children and teachers alike grow to be a close-knit “family” that cheers for each other’s achievements, and even comforts each other in times of need. Foundations is a supportive environment that I feel so lucky to be a part of. WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED AS A TEACHER AT EAGLE HILL? From my years working at Eagle Hill, I have learned many advantageous tactics and strategies to guide my instruction. I have learned the importance of speaking slowly and repeating directions to assure student understanding. I have learned how to create

David Blank

lessons that offer differentiation for students, and even the significance of trial and error. However, above all I learned the gravity that collaboration and self-reflection can have on the meaningfulness and effectiveness of my lessons.

Dr. David Blank is in his fifth year as the Director of Psychological Services at Eagle Hill. David and his team work with students across divisions to ensure all students receive social-emotional support.

SHARE A FAVORITE MEMORY! If I had to narrow it down, I’d say the fondest memory I have of Eagle Hill is when my first group of kids “graduated” from the Foundations Program and moved-up to the Lower School. It was amazing to see the progress they had made! When most children start in Foundations, they are very young, nervous, and are hindered by their low confidence in their skills. It was very moving to watch the kids flourish, see them achieve their personal learning goals, and head off onto their next chapter at Eagle Hill, chins held high, ready to tackle whatever was thrown their way. I don’t think I could be prouder of the amazing, hard-working, caring people they have grown to be!

WHY DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY OR WORKING IN A SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT? Initially, out of graduate school, I worked in community-based services developing programs to help occupy the time of youth outside of the classroom. I directed a program that provided therapeutic recreational programs for children with emotional disabilities. Although this position was rewarding, I wanted a more direct clinical impact on the youth I worked with. So, I went back to graduate school to get my doctorate in school/clinical child psychology. It was a great decision as it provided me with the training to not only be a clinician but also to support students, families, and school personnel. (continued page 17)

FACULTY

Jeanette Glover has been teaching at Eagle Hill for twelve years and teachers biology, general science, tutorial, and (sometimes!) writing in the Upper School. HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN TEACHING SCIENCE AND TUTORIAL? I became interested in teaching science when I was in college. I was a science major and really enjoyed doing experiments and learning about nature and the environment. After I came to Eagle Hill, I became interested in how students learn to read, so I went back to college to become certified as a reading specialist.

Jeanette Glover

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING PART OF THE EHS FACULTY? What I like best about being part of the Eagle Hill faculty is that we all love what we do. We work very hard at our jobs of course, but we also like to have fun, both in and out of our classrooms.

“These teachers are so skilled. They’re so skilled sometimes I feel that they go beyond their profession. They’re not just educators. I feel like they’re magicians.” – Current Eagle Hill Parent

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES EAGLE HILL SPECIAL? Eagle Hill is a special place because the teachers really get to know each and every one of their students. We can do this because our class sizes are small. Students are our number one priority and to be able to give them what they need, we need to understand who they are and how they learn. I think we do that very well here! WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED AS A TEACHER AT EAGLE HILL? One thing I’ve learned as a teacher at Eagle Hill is that the more we share the richer we are. We share our talents and enthusiasm with our students, we share ideas and lesson plans with our colleagues, and it all comes right back to us in the form of a happy, positive school environment. SHARE A FAVORITE MEMORY! A favorite memory of mine was when a brand new student was having a difficult time adjusting to being in a new school and broke down in tears in class. A student who had been here a few years went to them and patted them on the back and said, “I did the same thing on my first day. Don’t worry about anything. You’ve come to the right place.”

EAGLE HILL NEWS

David Blank continued WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING PART OF THE EHS FACULTY/STAFF? The passion the staff at Eagle Hill possess. Prior to Eagle Hill, I was a therapist for children in foster care for about seven years. Foster care is a difficult environment to work in and I found that many of my colleagues had become burnt out and lost that passion that is so necessary to do the work we do. Coming to Eagle Hill was a breath of fresh air for me. To be around so many talented and passionate professionals was a welcome change.

From the Dorm For the past 45 years, the September routine for the dorm team has been the same…the Hardwick House doors are opened, rooms are situated, roommates are paired, and we prepare the dorm for another fantastic year. Last year, the routine changed and a silence fell over the dorm in the Hardwick House. This year, the Hardwick House gave a big sigh of relief, as it opened its doors on Sept. 2 to welcome the first dorm students after 18 months. The dining hall is humming with excitement, tv lounges are bustling with life – the happiness and magic have returned to the dorm. The dorm team is overjoyed to be back and to observe the transformation that students undergo as the year progresses. Kids feel the magic as they learn independent living skills, form lasting friendships, and develop the confidence that helps make them more successful as they move into their next journey. Joy Delisle Director of the Junior Boarding Program

HOW DOES THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES TEAM MAKE EAGLE HILL SPECIAL? We have really developed a wonderful staff here. We have three doctoral-level people; myself, Angelina Morales, and Holly Moniz. Additionally, Margie Alley is a seasoned clinical social worker with over 20 years of Eagle Hill experience. Our newest addition is Jesse Shalett – a school counselor with over 15 years of experience. Lastly, we have two incredible interns; Christine O’Brien, a psychology doctoral student, and Jasmine Martier, a clinical social work student. This talented staff allows us to offer a comprehensive set of services to all of our students including individual counseling, group work, classroom collaborations, socialemotional learning groups, and parent support. We couldn’t be more proud of the work we do. WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED AS THE DIRECTOR OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES? When I first interviewed for the position, I remember Dave Sylvestro telling me that Eagle Hill was a magical place. Now that I have been here for a few years, I see what he meant. Eagle Hill is a place where students can find that part of themselves that they may have lost along the way. These children rediscovering their love for learning is truly a “magical” experience and I am honored to be a part of it. SHARE A FAVORITE MEMORY! My favorite memory is of a student who upon his first day of Eagle Hill was terrified and scared. This student was nowhere to be found on the first day of school but I had a feeling I knew where to look for him. I went to the bathroom and found him crying and hiding in the stall. He told me he “hated” school and that he was sure Eagle Hill would be no different than his past experiences. We spent a great deal of time together over the next couple of years. My joy came from watching his fear subside and seeing him become a leader among his peers. It truly is amazing to watch what someone can do when they finally feel safe and understood. FALL 2021. 17

ALUMNI PROFILE

Juhnun Oh ‘99 Juhnun Oh, Eagle Hill Class of 1999, lives in Ottawa, Ontario Canada, and is the Deputy Supervisor in security for a government/private building. Prior to his current position, Juhnun was a teacher in Seoul, Korea for nine years and even hosted a TEDx Talk at his school titled “The Three , P s' of Passion.” Juhnun is also the father of two young boys! WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO EAGLE HILL? I came to Eagle Hill in 1997. I did not fit in well at my school in Seoul, Korea. I’m originally from Canada, my father started a new career and moved the family to Seoul. So, as a 12-year-old boy who never lived overseas from Canada, it was quite a culture shock to me, since I did not know the language, the culture, or pretty much anything about Korea. I left all my friends and people I knew behind to start all over again. After three years of struggling to fit in in Seoul, my mother thought it would be best if I lived with my extended relatives in the US and go to a special boarding school like EHS to help me with the social skills that I needed to learn. WHAT DID YOU LEARN AT EAGLE HILL THAT HELPED YOU MANAGE YOUR LEARNING DIFFERENCES? The two most important lessons I learned from EHS were from two teachers. One was from Ms. MacKenzie, my math teacher, who knew that the phrase “learning disabilities” troubled me. She reminded me that everyone in the world has strengths and weaknesses and that no one should be ashamed of themselves. In other words, everyone has a learning difference or, as I like to call it, a “learning uniqueness.”

18

.

EAGLE HILL NEWS

The second important thing I learned was from Mrs. Volpitta, when she reminded me to “relax” since I was a very tense young man who took things too seriously. She reminded me that “life is a journey, never a destination.” Thanks to her, I have a new love and understanding of William Shakespeare when she introduced Macbeth to us in her class. As Shakespeare stated, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY AFTER EAGLE HILL. After I graduated from EHS in 1999, I went to Richmond Christian Secondary back home in Vancouver, Canada and graduated in 2001. After high school, I took one year off to do missions work in Jaurez Mexico, helping churches and the less fortunate. I also traveled the world to understand it better (I’ve traveled to at least 23 different countries). I then went to Arts Institute of Vancouver and received my first associates degree in Digital Media in 2003, then I received a second associates degree in 2005 from Algonquin College in Theater Arts. I worked for private law enforcement for Canada for about 3 years at the Vancouver Port Authority before I went to Northeastern University in Boston to obtain my Bachelor’s of Science in Leadership. I graduated summa cum laude in 2015 and got accepted to work as a private foreign school teacher in Seoul, Korea in various subjects.

I never stop learning, and I never stop teaching.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR CAREER(S) AS A TEACHER IN KOREA AND IN PRIVATE LAW ENFORCEMENT. Being a teacher in Korea was an interesting experience. I not only taught English to Korean students, but also to Japanese, Chinese, Russian, and German students. I also taught Business English to CEOs and Korean Engineers. Later on, with my other specialized backgrounds, I taught drama, literature, and social studies to high school students. I taught for over 9 years in Seoul, Korea, and was asked to do a TEDx talk* at the school, titled “The 3 P’s of Passion.” At the end of my TEDx talk, I used Mrs. Donna Volpitta’s quote “Life is a journey, never a destination.”

ANY ADVICE FOR CURRENT EHS STUDENTS OR FOR PARENTS WITH STUDENTS WHO HAVE A LEARNING DIFFERENCE? For current EHS students, remember to never let anyone look down at you just because of your “learning uniqueness” – stand your ground and prove yourself. Follow Socrates lesson “When you want to succeed as much as you want to breathe, you will be a great success.” In other words, make sure you’re not just talking the talk, but discipline yourself to walk the walk. Needing success means you put in the work, time, the struggle, sacrifice, and the pain to make it manifest. Also, don’t forget to take smart calculated risks while you put in the work, effort, and time.

Back home in Ottawa, Ontario Canada, I’m currently the Deputy Supervisor for the in-house security for a special government/private building in downtown Ottawa, and I’ve been working there for 3 years. Even as a specialized security guard, I’m still teaching/mentoring my guards, as well teaching candidate(s) of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to help them with their vocabulary for their aptitude exams, and teaching embassy staff English as a part-time gig. To this day, I’m learning my third language (French) and teaching others English/literature. I’m also currently pursuing a new career as a Canadian military officer for Army Logistics. In other words, I never stop learning, and I never stop teaching.

For parents: Being a parent of two young boys myself - and one of them having ADHD – I know that being a parent is never easy. However, remember that your children are children! Let them be kids. Never compare them with anyone. Speaking from experience, everyone is unique in their own way. Remember this quote: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” -Albert Einstein

You Make the Magic Happen! We’ve heard it before – the faculty and staff of Eagle Hill are magicians! Our teachers, speech and language pathologists, school psychologists, and educational coordinators make magic happen every day for our students. For many parents, the progress they see in their child at Eagle Hill may feel like magic. But every magician needs training, supplies, and a “bag of tricks” – and that’s where you come in. Your gifts to the Eagle Hill Fund are an integral piece of creating and maintaining the Eagle Hill experience. Gifts to the Eagle Hill Fund support professional development for our teachers, financial aid for families in need, technological enhancements for the classroom, health and safety measures for our COVID-19 response, improvements to our campus, and so much more. Thank you for your support and keeping the magic alive, no matter what challenges we are facing or what the future may hold.

With gratitude, Lisa Ferraro Director of Development
