DEAR EAGLE HILL COMMUNITY,

I

t has been nearly six months since our school was engaged in on-campus instruction and we are all looking forward to welcoming our students back on campus in a few weeks! While there are many uncertainties right now, we are embracing the hope and optimism that starting a new academic year brings. While we believe the COVIDrelated restrictions are necessary, we recognize that our school culture of a robust and close-knit community will be compromised. Nevertheless, we will do whatever it takes to rekindle the joy of learning and with added resolve to “make lemonade out of lemons!”

Our planning team has put together a plan that prioritizes the health and safety of our entire community and strives to mitigate and manage the COVID-19 risk while maintaining our promise to deliver a ‘transformational’ education for each student.

These plans have been created based on the information we currently have from the State of Connecticut and the CDC. As we move through the next several weeks, we may need to adjust these plans should we receive additional guidance. You can expect a weekly communication from the school that will address both updates to our re-entry plan and routine matters to assure a smooth opening.

Eagle Hill has made some significant investments in our facilities and program to address some of the restrictions and enhance our program for the students. These include: • Purchasing several outdoor tent structures for location throughout the campus to create open-air teaching spaces.

• Installing bipolar ionization systems in ventilation ducts to enhance air purification in buildings.

• Creating a new Technology Integrator faculty position to help support students, faculty, and parents with technology integration in the classroom.

• Adding capacity in the Health Office with extra space and personnel to support the health and safety requirements for re-opening campus. CONTINUED V

A significant health and safety requirement by the State of Connecticut is that all faculty and students wear masks when they are inside buildings. It is imperative that everyone, students and faculty, adhere to this and other restrictions. While we cannot fully eliminate the risk, following preventative guidelines will greatly reduce the risk of any virus spread on campus.

The first day of school will be Wednesday, September 2nd with orientation sessions planned for ALL students being held on August 31 and September 1st. These will be small group sessions scheduled by cohort and you will receive more information about the schedule of those meetings soon.

As you will see in this document, should we be required to move to remote learning, we have created student schedules that mirror our on-campus learning. We can implement online learning schedules immediately and we are committed to providing the same personalized educational instruction to meet the needs of each student.

As a parent, your partnership in creating a safe environment to return to campus is greatly appreciated. Together, we are confident that we can adjust to our new circumstances. We invite you to join us for a Town Hall meeting via Zoom on Thursday, August 6th for additional updates and to answer any questions.

TRANSPORTATION

W

e understand that transportation during the health crisis created by COVID-19 requires flexibility and additional health precautions.

Please be aware that if you are using busing from your school district, Eagle Hill will have limited influence in the transportation process and we cannot make assurances about timing, convenience, passenger density, or distancing rules from town-controlled services. Please make decisions regarding transportation with this in mind, and please be sure to have a secondary transportation plan in case of any changes from your school district.

be used as a homeroom period so as to allow for staggered bus arrivals.

IF YOUR CHILD USES DISTRICT BUSING, there may be a staggered arrival and dismissal time imposed by the busing company and district guidance. However, buses will not be able to unload students prior to 8:00 am.

• Dismissal times will be flexible to accommodate bus schedules.

FAMILIES WHO RESIDE IN THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT will

continue to need to provide private means of transportation to and from Eagle Hill each day. Greenwich families should confirm transportation with the Greenwich Public School District.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

t Eagle Hill, we are committed to providing a full academic program for our students whether we are able to be oncampus or if state guidelines require that we continue our distance learning program. Our goal is to have students and staff on campus—with safety precautions meeting all state requirements in place. Our reopening plans were created to provide individualized instruction while maximizing safety following the general guidelines below. Specific details for each division are available on PAGE 11 for Foundations, PAGE 13 for Lower School, and PAGE 16 for Upper School.

Eagle Hill Will: ORGANIZE COHORTS to keep groups of students together during the day.

• Students will remain in these cohorts for all aspects of the day, including academic classes, art, music, physical activity, lunch, and recess.

PROVIDE ART, MUSIC, AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY integrated within the daily academic schedule.

• Music classes will be regularly scheduled each week and will be Zoomed into classrooms to minimize cross-cohort exposure.

Athletics & Activities For safety reasons the Fairchester Athletic Association will not be running interscholastic athletic programs this fall. We will keep parents informed about opportunities for future seasons. In lieu of interscholastic sports, we will engage all students in a robust physical activity program during PE and activities periods.

Dress Code There will be minimal changes to Eagle Hill’s dress code. We will open school with relaxed dress code and return to regular dress code at the discretion of the Head of School. Information regarding dress code can also be found on our website.

Academic Programs

Technology The Technology Department has been fine-tuning and making enhancements to the many tools used daily in our classrooms and needed for distance learning.

We have:

• REVIEWED our classroom equipment to make sure that all the equipment is in working order.

• INSTALLED additional equipment needed to support remote learners in the classrooms.

• ORDERED and replaced aging/outdated ActivPanels with new devices.

• REVIEWED the servers and “backbone” equipment to make sure it will support our student and faculty needs.

In preparation for the possibility of returning to distance learning, we are building on what we learned and feedback from this past spring. We have:

• FORMULATED a Tech Professional Development curriculum for teachers to

refresh and enhance their skills on our most used applications (Google Suite, Active Inspire, Zoom, etc.).

• CREATED online training sessions (live and pre-recorded) that will be made

available to parents with information on the applications used in distance learning. A list of sessions and a schedule will be provided in the coming weeks.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

T

he Eagle Hill Psychological Services department has tailored a

comprehensive program to help support the social-emotional needs of our students during this unique and unconventional time. We have planned for a program that can be delivered in-person or online with minimal disruption and that builds on the program established during distance learning this past spring.

Program Details Include: CONSISTENT CONTACT with our team members

for all students.

• The Psychological Services department will be running small groups throughout the day for every Lower and Upper School student.

• We feel it is essential that every student have a touch point and a relationship with a staff member to maximize our ability to support all students independent of what challenges/ circumstances we may face as a school.

• These groups will cover topics including, but

not limited to, managing distance learning, coping with COVID, learning differences, social media awareness, tolerance, diversity/racial awareness, and social justice.

COLLABORATION WITH teachers and within classes,

individual student counseling, and weekly callback sessions for our Peer Mentoring Program and other specified groups.

Family Support WE WILL CONTINUE to have bi-weekly topicdriven Parent Support Groups as well as our monthly Dad’s Group.

These groups will be delivered in the safest way possible, with the ability to use Zoom if necessary.

BUILDING ON THE SUCCESS of our weekly parent check-ins last spring, the Psychological Services Team will continue to facilitate an ongoing forum where parents can provide support and learn from one another.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE

T

he Eagle Hill Speech and Language department will continue to provide

a program that addresses the language needs of individual students through small group pull-out sessions and collaborative sessions within the classroom. Enrollment in the program is initially determined by results of a screening that is completed upon entry to the school.

Lower and Upper School • All students new to the Lower and Upper School divisions will complete a

screening using a formal and informal measure to determine eligibility of services.

Students enrolled in services last year will not need to be rescreened.

• All students who qualify will receive a small group pull-out session one time per week during an academic class that has minimal disruption to their program.

Since these services are delivered within the academic day, the schedule will remain the same should a transition to distance learning occur.

• Speech-language pathologists will collaborate in classrooms and provide consultation to teachers to facilitate carryover of learned skills.

Foundations • Speech and language services will be delivered within the academic day, whether learning in school or remotely. The type of service provided is dependent on the needs of each student and will be integrated into the academic program.

all parents through informal discussions and scheduled training sessions. The training sessions can be delivered whether we are in school or participating in distance learning.

CAMPUS FACILITIES Supervision of Student Movement Around Campus THERE WILL BE CLOSE ADULT SUPERVISION OF CHILDREN. Supervision will begin

at drop-off, safely ensuring students’ arrival to their cohort, and continue through afternoon pick-up.

WE ARE INSTALLING SIGNAGE ON FLOORS AND DOORS to ensure that the children

safely remain in their cohorts, practice social distancing, and wash their hands.

Interior Spaces CLASSROOM SPACES HAVE BEEN EVALUATED for social distancing. Changes to

classroom layouts include:

• A marked six-foot teacher zone at the front of each room.

• Desks for students that are spread 6 feet apart.

ENHANCED/INCREASED CLEANING PROTOCOLS for bathrooms and classrooms.

PLEXIGLASS DIVIDERS have been installed in offices and classrooms for essential

face-to-face meetings.

AIR FILTRATION will be maximized in all applicable buildings.

• Maximize outside air exchange in all buildings by increasing the amount of time ventilation systems are run outside of school hours.

• Increase the frequency of ventilation filter replacement scheduled throughout the year.

• Installed bipolar ionization in ventilation ducts to enhance air purification in buildings

HANDS-FREE BATHROOM FAUCETS and auto-flush toilets are being installed in all

bathrooms.

Campus Facilities

Exterior Spaces COHORTS WILL BE ASSIGNED outside spaces in order to maximize distancing while

minimizing cohort contact.

THE SCHOOL WILL ADD PORTABLE BATHROOMS and hand washing stations in

outdoor areas to increase social distancing and increase hand-washing.

WE HAVE DETERMINED several outdoor spaces/locations, some protected by a tent or

awning, for open-air instruction.

FOOD SERVICE Eagle Hill has planned to change its dining services to ensure proper distancing among students during lunch periods.

ALL STUDENTS will have lunch in their classroom.

THE KITCHEN STAFF WILL PREPARE individual box lunches for

each student and staff member. These will be delivered to classrooms every day.

• Students will be provided with a limited menu of options to choose from on a weekly basis.

• Teachers will be in classrooms to supervise during the lunch period.

• As in the past, children are welcome to bring a lunch from home if preferred.

PARENTS WILL BE ASKED to provide their children with personal water bottles to be used during the school day.

THE DINING ROOM SPACE will be reallocated for

alternative use.

Hygiene All staff and students will be educated on practices to be used to prevent the spread of diseases. Faculty will increase supervision of students to ensure adherence to good hygiene protocols. These practices include, but are not limited to: SOCIAL DISTANCING – remaining six feet apart when feasible. Floor decals will be

placed throughout campus as reminders.

FREQUENT HAND WASHING and use of hand sanitizer, on arrival to school, before eating, after recess, and prior to dismissal.

Health and Safety

Protocols if Symptoms Present on Campus WITH THE GUIDANCE OF OUR SCHOOL NURSE, any community member that exhibits

symptoms consistent with COVID-19 will be directed to an identified “isolation room” (other than the health office).

• Parents or guardians will be required to pick the student up within 30-60 minutes after isolation begins.

• Students will remain supervised in the isolation room.

• For the purposes of contact tracing, school will log all persons who enter the room. The individual supervising the room will be equipped with proper PPE.

IF ANY PERSON WHO HAS BEEN PRESENT IN SCHOOL has a confirmed diagnosis of

COVID-19, the local health department will be notified immediately.

• Students and staff will be dismissed from campus for 2-5 days. This initial

short-term dismissal allows time for the local health officials to gain a better understanding of the COVID-19 situation impacting the school and allows contact tracing to be conducted.

• Following short-term dismissal, local health officials will help the school

determine appropriate next steps, including whether an extended dismissal duration is needed to stop or slow further spread of COVID-19.

• Local health officials’ recommendations for the scope and duration of school dismissals will be made on a case-by-case basis using the most up-to-date information about COVID-19 and the specific cases in the community.

• During school dismissals, any planned extracurricular group activities, schoolbased afterschool programs, and large events, (e.g., assemblies, spirit nights, field trips, and sporting events) will be canceled.

• During a dismissal, EHS discourages staff, students, and their families from gathering or socializing anywhere. This includes group child care arrangements, as well as gathering at places like a friend’s house, a favorite restaurant, or the local shopping mall.

• If Eagle Hill is dismissed for quarantine, the school will communicate next steps for continuing the educational program through remote learning.

• In the event of other circumstances of exposure, we encourage parents to

contact the School nurse, who in conjunction with local health officials, can advise the next course of action.
