A Personal Connection

A

s someone who grew up mostly in schools with very large classes, I remember often feeling anonymous. There were a few teachers who took a more personal interest in me, and I remember how important that felt, especially when I had the sense that they “got” me. In fact, even though teenagers can act like they are too “mysterious” to be understood, or seem aloof, my experience in my long career in education is that students want to be known and appreciated.

For me, one of the most wonderful parts of getting to know Eagle Hill has been seeing how well the teachers understand the students, and how dedicated they are to making sure each student feels known. That means many conversations about Pokémon, Star Wars, and Legos! But it also means digging deeper to learn what is unique about each child, and what makes each child “light up.”

Building a community where everyone feels known means creating an environment in which no student, teacher, or staff member can go through the day without someone checking in on them and, sincerely, asking how they are doing.

Our goal is to help students recognize that we are all inevitably interconnected; that none of us truly walks alone...

I remember being in my second or third year as a teacher in Washington DC, teaching at a creative private school with classes of about 12 students. One day, I just had a hard day. At the end of the day, to pick myself up, I walked a few blocks from the school to a local deli, where I was sure that a cookie ice cream sandwich would make me feel better. I walked in, picked one out and walked outside to unwrap it. The street was at the top of a hill which led down to a main road, and the cookie sandwich was, of course, round. As I ripped open the package, the round ice cream sandwich fell out, landed on its side, and quickly rolled all the way down the hill. I stood there in the road,

alone, helpless, watching my treat rapidly roll out of sight. My day hadn’t gotten any better! The next morning, I walked into my first class, and as I entered, several students came up to me and said “Clay,” (we were all called by our first names) “it seemed like you had a hard day yesterday. Are you ok?” As a young teacher, I was amazed. The students really wanted to know what they could do to help me. I knew then that I had found my community.

There are many ways to build community within a school through shared experiences.

I have been fortunate in my career to have always been in schools that value the arts greatly. I have spent hours watching students work on art or ceramics projects while talking about the challenges, asking each other for advice or just talking about life. The fact that they are busy with a hands-on project takes away much of the pressure of the conversation. I have watched students in photography work with each other to set up a shot, building bonds through their shared interest in getting the visual just right. And I have seen students and teachers patiently work over and over on a scene or a song in drama or music, with the activity fostering interdependence that lasts well beyond the arts class.

Similarly, I have seen students on sports teams take pride in representing their school and in working together for a mutual goal.

You can’t win a baseball game without nine players. And the soccer or basketball team is much better when everyone knows their position and works together to set up each play. I love the Peer Mentoring Program at Eagle Hill for that same reason: the students invest themselves in helping each other, and the whole school benefits.

The school can help build community through other kinds of shared experiences, including time in school with guest speakers

and out of school with carefully planned field trips. About two years ago, before the release of the movie “The Green Book,” I read an article in the Washington Post about a woman who had grown up in Michigan and traveled south with her family to see relatives each summer. Her father drove, her mother navigated, and, at age nine, she was responsible for the Green Book.

As an African-American family traveling in the south, her family needed her help using the book to find safe places to get gas, eat, and stay overnight. The woman in the article lived in Maryland, so I called her and invited her to come in to speak to our students about her experience. She happily agreed, and spoke honestly and in depth about her experiences with a group of 20 students. The students talked about her visit for weeks. Their extended conversations created a special bond that helped build community. A field trip to see dinosaurs, learn about art, walk an Underground Railroad trail, or take part in hands-on science activities can create similar shared experiences and community bonds.

At Eagle Hill, our faculty collaborate on curriculum, to talk about students and to share innovative, effective teaching practices. They also collaborate daily, intensively with your children. Our goal is to help students recognize that we are all inevitably interconnected; that none of us truly walks alone; and that the journey is more harmonious, productive, and pleasurable when we walk together.

A Lasting Connection

THE CONCEPT OF THE CAR LINE WAS foreign to me. It was the fall of 2011 and my family had just moved back to the United States after twelve years in London, UK. In London, parents gather on the front steps of the school and chat while waiting for the Headmaster to release their children from a long day of strict lessons in stiff uniforms.

Standing on the steps, parents casually get to know each other. Pleasantries are exchanged. Playdates are arranged.

Friendships develop. Sitting alone in the car line waiting to pick up my son seemed so uncivilized. How did anyone get to know each other here at Eagle Hill School?

That year, a blanket of hot, humid weather covered Greenwich well into late September. Idling prohibited, I shut off the engine, rolled down the windows hoping for a breeze, and listened to the shrieks and laughter of happy Eagle Hill kids. We had made the right decision. My formerly anxious, withdrawn, bullied son was content and eager to go to school.

“Hello!” Snapping out of my reverie, a darkhaired woman appeared at my window.

Absorbing the value of these different touch points...has made me a better parent, a more compassionate friend, and a fierce defender of our unique community. the EHS Benefit. This was another foreign concept: the annual independent school fundraiser, an event that is crucial to closing the gap between tuition and what it costs to operate the school. Within moments of speaking to the co-chair, I was paired with another EHS mom to cover the “kids” category for silent auction donations.

Several benefit meetings into the school year, I was beginning to appreciate not only the fiscal rationale for the benefit, but also the subjective value of building a strong sense of community. Although I still needed my GPS to get to the grocery store, I was beginning to navigate life at Eagle Hill.

Welcome to our New Board Members Over the years, I immersed myself into life at Eagle Hill - in both small and big ways. Through tears at the Parent Support Group, I discovered other parents who struggled with the complexities of managing sibling relationships when one of your kids has special needs. Attending Parenting Seminars, I learned about myriad topics that affect parents of LD kids, such as the pros and cons associated with attention medication, the benefits of establishing and maintaining an IEP with your local school district, and the misconceptions around auditory processing disorders. Volunteering to organize the Lower School Halloween Party or work a shift at the Book Fair, I met the most incredible parents, all of whom identify with the roller coaster of parenting a child who learns differently. Working with Eagle Hill’s extraordinary faculty and staff, I witnessed the unparalleled expertise of Eagle Hill educators. And now, working with our incredibly talented and dedicated Board of Trustees, we have the honor of safeguarding and furthering the mission of our special school. Absorbing the value of these different touch points along the way has made me a better parent, a more compassionate friend, and a fierce defender of our unique community.

For every contribution I’ve made to Eagle Hill, I’ve received exponential returns. Those benefits continue well beyond graduation day. Eagle Hill traditionally is considered a transitional school, but by getting involved and staying engaged you’ll find friendship and a support system that will last a lifetime.

Kate Bennett A BIT ABOUT KATE • Grew up in Florida, California, and Indiana before attending boarding school in Massachusetts • Graduated from Georgetown University with a B.S. in International Relations • Attended Columbia University Law and Business Schools and received a J.D./M.B.A. • Worked as a lawyer in New York City at Simpson, Thatcher & Bartlett and Kaye Scholer • Moved to Connecticut in 2012 with her husband, Andrew, and their three sons.

She is now a stay-at-home mom • Their eldest son, Jackson, graduated from Eagle Hill in 2019 after two years in the Upper School • Kate served on the Eagle Hill Parents Association Executive Board and chaired the Logowear Committee.

ON WHY SHE ACCEPTED A POSITION AS AN EHS TRUSTEE I remember coming to an open house when we were looking at EHS for our son. During the presentation, Dr. Castro said something to the effect of “Now you can take a breath.

You have found a place that will help your child and you don’t have to fight so hard anymore for understanding, services, etc.”.

Tears sprung to my eyes when she said that, as I am sure they have for countless parents here. Eagle Hill takes a load off of the children, the parents, and entire families in the beautiful way that it makes us feel accepted, and not like outliers. I am honored to be extended this opportunity to serve on the Board and help other families discover the treasure that is EHS.

ON WHAT SHE WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS ON DURING HER TENURE ON THE BOARD Eagle Hill provides a unique educational offering that is acutely needed by a large population of children. Its ability to provide specialized and tailored learning while, at the same time, giving kids a broad school experience – complete with sports, arts, community service, and more, make it a top-notch institution. Eagle Hill has few peers locally and even nationally. I hope to help Eagle Hill continue its history of excellence while moving forward with expanding its reach and expertise in educating children with learning differences.

ON WHAT SHE WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS ON DURING HER TENURE ON THE BOARD I hope that my experience working with and in development offices would be helpful, but I’m happy to focus on any task that will help Eagle Hill support its remarkable students.

Cathryn Johnson A BIT ABOUT CATHRYN • Grew up Chaustaqua County in Western N.Y. • B.A. in in Elementary Education and Master’s Degree in School Counseling • Cathryn has worked for 34 years as a certified teacher and a school counselor • She is married with two children: one a special education administrator and the other a high school counselor. Cathryn also has four grandchildren.

ON WHY SHE ACCEPTED A POSITION AS AN EHS TRUSTEE After serving many years as a certified teacher and school counselor in the public sector, I find that my philosophies and ideals directly parallel those of the mission of Eagle Hill. Providing an outstanding education to all learners in order to become responsible and social/emotional members of society is the ultimate goal of any educational institution.

ON WHAT SHE WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS ON DURING HER TENURE ON THE BOARD: With my background in education, my focus will be on supporting teachers and staff. I am looking forward to hearing the roles they play in making Eagle Hill students so successful.

A BIT ABOUT ROBERT • Grew up in South Carolina • B.A. from Washington and Lee University and M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina • Moved to New York City with his wife, Dana, in 2000 • Robert and Dana have lived in Bronxville, NY with their three children for the last ten years • Dana is an active member of the Eagle Hill Parents Association and serves on the Executive Board • Their son, Stuart, just started his sixth year at Eagle Hill. This is his first year in the Upper School.

ON WHY HE ACCEPTED A POSITION AS AN EHS TRUSTEE Seeing children that have daily struggles find confidence and success is extremely rewarding as a parent. We get to see that all the time at Eagle Hill, and we have certainly witnessed it with Stuart. We feel so lucky to have found Eagle Hill and if I can help play a role in keeping Eagle Hill’s mission going strong, I’ll gladly try to help!

ON WHAT HE WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS ON DURING HIS TENURE ON THE BOARD My career has always been in finance, so I would certainly love to assist on the Finance Committee, but I recognize that there is a lot to do all-around and I would like to help out in any way I can.

ON WHY SHE ACCEPTED A POSITION AS AN EHS TRUSTEE Eagle Hill has been a tremendous force of good for our family. After discovering that a mainstream school setting would not meet our son’s needs, we embarked on a “dream school” quest: seasoned teachers who still had spark, mission-driven leadership, and students who graduated with confidence, self-awareness, and skills. Eagle Hill embodied all of these criteria. Newlyrenovated classrooms housed in former stables and a bucolic brook-side setting only added to the enchantment! Right after securing Finn a spot in Eagle Hill’s Lower School, we moved to Greenwich from Park Slope, Brooklyn. The four years he spent at Eagle Hill indeed prepared him to move on – he has just started seventh grade at Indian Mountain School. I am honored to continue to play a part in a place that makes such a positive impact on students, teachers, families, and the community at large.

ON WHAT SHE WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS ON DURING HER TENURE ON THE BOARD As Clay Kaufman ushers in the next great era of Eagle Hill’s story, I hope to take part in strategic planning. I hope my experience as an Eagle Hill parent, connected to so many wonderful EHS families, will help shape the conversation. It’s my hope that during my tenure, the Board will continue to safeguard the school’s loftiest goals and secure its place as a thought leader in the field of special education.

A BIT ABOUT MEG: • Grew up in Valley Stream, NY, on Long Island • Meg worked for the Wella Corporation as an educator, and later oversaw the color department for the Adam Broderick Salon in Ridgefield, CT. • Meg has spent the past six years dedicating herself to philanthropic causes. She works closely with Ability Beyond, Western Connecticut Health Center, and the Danbury Hospital • Meg co-chaired the Eagle Hill Annual Benefit in the 2018-2019 school year and will chair this year’s event • Meg is a business owner who recently opened “Calme” in New Canaan – a wellness spa that offers infrared sauna therapy • Meg and her husband, Greg, live in New Canaan with their children. Their daughter, Hayden, is in her third year at Eagle Hill.

ON WHY SHE ACCEPTED A POSITION AS AN EHS TRUSTEE When I saw that my daughter was struggling in school and had learning differences, I realized that I had the same challenges – but was undiagnosed while I was growing up. I understand first-hand the anxieties and struggles my daughter experiences. Because of that, I’m honored to join a group who can help support students who have learning challenges.

SPRING ACTIVITIES

N

B

eing a participant on an Eagle Hill athletic team is a big part of the school experience for many of our students. Our coaches are the key to the Athletic Program - they carry the themes and goals of the Eagle Hill Academic Program on to the athletic field. All of our coaches are teachers or residential staff and are fully committed to the mission of Eagle Hill School. Our coaches know and understand who our students are before they ever step on the field or court. Players generally know at least one of their coaches, which makes joining a team a bit more comfortable, particularly for those who have never played an organized sport before. Given the vast skill sets of our coaches, most students have settled in within the first two weeks of each new season. For those new to Eagle Hill, joining a sports team can be a key factor in a smooth transition to their new educational environment.

As an example of the commitment and experience of our coaches, we’re proud to present our 2018-19 Coach of the Year — Peter Kaminsky. Peter is a teacher in our Upper School and lifelong athlete who has coached a variety of sports in his five years at Eagle Hill. Be it soccer, hockey or baseball, Peter is a committed coach who exemplifies the qualities of the Eagle Hill Athletic Program.

Our coaches develop special connections with the players and continue the critical role of helping students develop key peer connections that often grow into strong friendships over the course of the school year. We are lucky to have a large pool of coaches such as Peter who are committed to helping our students have the most successful team experiences possible.

ot all students choose to participate on our interscholastic athletic teams.

Between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m., Eagle Hill students have a combination of a one-hour proctored study hall and one hour of a supervised afternoon activity. Those students who choose not play on sports teams have a range of physical and non-physical activity choices run by our dedicated teaching staff. Some of the activities offered this past spring were; Hip Hop, Sports Class, Fitness, Ultimate Frisbee, Gymnastics, Run/Walk, Karate, Yoga, Flag Football, PE, Art, Movie Review, Dungeons and Dragons, and Lower School Activity Group. Not only do these activities allow students to learn new skills or hone existing ones, they’re a perfect way for students to find friends with similar interests.

With the help of faculty volunteers, we also continued our long tradition of service-learning by encouraging students to volunteer their time to programs such as Sweet Readers, Neighbor to Neighbor, Adopt A Dog, and the St. Luke’s Soup Kitchen. Many thanks to these organizations and our generous faculty for helping teach our students the importance of community service!

The rewards are priceless when you see the student’s actions begin to change and they demonstrate good citizenship with little or no prompting from staff.

A Community Within a Community Life in the Dorm

W

hen August slowly slips by and a new school year is within reach, the butterflies and excitement of a new year begin. We, the Dorm Team, start going through all the questions that come with a new year - what will the new students be like? What sort of activities will capture their attention the best? And the biggest question - how will they come together as a community and how do we best facilitate that happening?

For students in the Residential Program, we work towards helping them understand that they belong to several communities that are fluid and of varying sizes — i.e. in their rooms, at the dinner table, in the dorm common areas, during activity time (often with students from the After-School Enrichment Program), etc. Through role-modeling and direct instruction, we try to establish a few of the basic skills needed to succeed in any community. A few skills we focus on are mutual respect, manners (both table manners and how they should treat others), and taking care of yourself, your items, and other people’s belongings.

In the beginning of the year, we focus mostly on bringing our dorm residents together as one big community. During the first week, there are a lot of group games and our first weekend trip – both great ways for them to get to know each other. We focus on being respectful and helping each other. We do “get to know you” group games and activities. Most of them are silly games to help them begin to feel comfortable with their new friends.

For some of the newer students, we have the “veteran” residential students help explain how the dorm works and show them the ropes. This gives the veteran student a sense of belonging and a feeling of trust and gives the new student a friend and someone they can confide in, further developing the sense of community in the dormitory.

Creating a sense of comradery in the dorm at Eagle Hill is hugely important, but we also want students in the dorm to feel part of the community at large. So, we also have dorm students help faculty with community service projects on campus and go out into the area to help those less fortunate or help the environment. Dorm students help at the Insprica Soup Kitchen, organize food and clothing drives for Neighbor to Neighbor, work on beach clean-up etc. All of these activities help students understand that they belong to a bigger community.

Helping students understand how they belong to a larger community has its challenges. The rewards are priceless when you see the student’s actions begin to change and they demonstrate good citizenship with little or no prompting from staff. The best reward is for a parent to tell us how their child has begun to show their new-found social skills at home.

learning and remembering names can be a big challenge. These worries aren’t always specific to the “new kid” either – sometimes returning students worry about making new friends, meeting new students, and getting comfortable with new teachers.

Literature is a perfect way to open discussions and share experiences about fears, expectations, and experiences. It’s always important to have conversations with our children about compassion, kindness, empathy, and inclusion, but never more so than the beginning of the year. R.J. Palacio, author of the book Wonder (the seminal book about inclusion), wrote in a New York Times article, “The tricky part about empathy is that you can’t teach it. You can only inspire it…That’s where a good picture book comes in handy. If a child can relate to a character or become immersed in a story, she begins to have feelings outside of her own direct realm of experience. The spark of empathy, delivered gently, can then grow.”

School! We all love what’s familiar, but September is about being brave and flexible (especially for students who are particularly set in their ways), as we welcome all of the new members of our community.

Much of the fall at Eagle Hill focuses on building community: as classes, as faculty, as divisions, in the dorm, and as a whole school. And this year we have the unique pleasure of welcoming a new Head of

For returning students and teachers, it is our job to make any newcomers feel at home. Many of our students struggle with any kind of transition, and the start of school is full of potential challenges.

New students may be thrilled to be here, or may be missing their friends and teachers. New kids might wonder, “Will I make friends here?” Or, “Will my teachers like me?” “Will I be able to do the work here?” Or, in all too many cases, “Will I be safe here?” For many students, just

All of those feelings are accentuated if you are the “new kid.” Unfortunately, many of our students have had the experience of being excluded: from a play date, sports team, or birthday party – which increases their sense of vulnerability and can sometimes make them more defensive and closed off.

As Palacio points out, if the character in a book is scared or worried, or is struggling somehow, it’s much easier to talk about that, first, which then may allow a child to open up about their own feelings.

These are some of our favorite books to start the year with, ones that open discussions about empathy, inclusion, kindness, and building community.

Hopefully, they will spark discussions about what it feels like to ride the bus for the first time, or walk into a classroom not knowing anyone, or miss seeing your best friend every day on the playground.

Your student may not read all of these with their teacher, but if you feel that your child is having a hard time with a “beginning of school” issue, these books may be a good place to start. They are all available in the Eagle Hill Library, in local public libraries, and, of course, online.

All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold A celebration of inclusion and diversity. This story follows a group of children of all colors, family make-ups, and who are wearing all types of clothing as they go through their school day.

The message is clear: we learn from each other’s differences, and all are welcome!

Come with Me by Holly McGhee A little girl is saddened by the news on TV and wants to know what she can do to make the world a better place. Her father takes her on a walk around the city, and happily greets everyone along the way. Inspired, she plucks up her courage and invites the boy next door to join her to take her dog for a walk. This story easily opens into a discussion of “what should you do if you see someone sitting alone on the playground or looking around confused?”

First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg Everyone is nervous about the first day of school – stay tuned for the surprise ending!

Hey Little Ant by Phillip Hoose A boy comes across an ant and lifts his foot, ready to stomp on him. The ant pleads for his life and ask the boy how he would feel if their situations were reversed. A good exercise in looking at things from a different perspective.

The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld A boy is devastated when the block tower he built is knocked down. A parade of animals offer unsatisfactory solutions to his problem, until finally a rabbit sits down just listens.

Sometimes all you need is a sympathetic ear and a shoulder to lean on.

The Smallest Girl in the Smallest Grade

by Justin Roberts EVERY person in class is important, even if you are the smallest. This is a book about finding your voice.

One by Kathryn Otoshi Using the colors of the rainbow, One shows how a strong personality can bully others.

Red has decided that it’s better than the other colors – until the number one stands up to Red. What follows opens discussions about bullying, intimidation, self-acceptance, empathy, and doing the right thing.

Swimmy by Leo Lionni There’s no better book about learning to work together as a group than this one.

The Don’t Worry Book by Todd Parr Kids love Parr’s bright colors and simple but powerful messages. This book easily opens the discussion, “what do you do when you feel worried?”

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus

by Mo Willems The pigeon’s latest adventure: he’s worried about starting school. This is destined to become a classic!

Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson When Ms. Albert teaches a lesson in kindness, Chloe realizes that she and her friends had been wrong to make fun of a new student’s second-hand clothes and not include her in their activities.

hile strolling through the hallway leading to the Community Room last year, one couldn’t help but slow down and glance at the colorful photos hanging on ribbons adorning the walls.

These photos portrayed a collection of families – of all different compositions – who make up the Eagle Hill community. This was one of the initiatives Eagle Hill embarked upon in an effort to embrace the value of a respectful and accepting community.

The 2018-2019 school year began with the Psychological Services Department presenting a staff training on diversity with a specific focus on gender diversity. A Diversity Committee was formed with members of both the Upper and Lower School faculty and representatives from our administration.

Our goal was to brain storm ideas on how to incorporate the EHS values (respect, responsibility, resourcefulness, and acceptance) within the school while promoting diversity awareness and sensitivity.

Be You Be Unique, a special segment of the Upper School newscast was created as a vehicle to share student-to-student diversity awareness within the community, using film clips and articles from news magazines. A separate student group was formed called Allies for All with the goal of raising diversity and sensitivity awareness among peers. Students shared quotes over the telephone intercom system during homeroom and Friday assemblies which

focused on different aspects of diversity; a way to start their day with an effort to be mindful and thoughtful. A parent component of the Diversity Committee was created, generating ideas to implement for the 2019-2020 school year. The Committee agreed that using books during literature classes lends itself well to our goals – allowing students to see other perspectives through the characters in the story, resulting in an exercise that creates empathy.

Over the past few years, members of the Psychological Services Department have collaborated weekly with specific classes to better work with teachers to facilitate social/ emotional discussions. I had the pleasure of pushing into Ms. Rappaport’s Lower School literature class where the eclectic combination of students (ranging in age from 11-12 years old) engaged in the most inspirational discussions, which has prompted me to share a memorable experience.

The conversation began around the character’s first kiss. “How could the girl in the book make the first move to kiss the boy?” Followed by, “It’s ok for her to do that…I’m a tomboy and I don’t have to have girly clothing!”, and it went on from there. The comments started to intensify with emotion, providing innumerable social teaching opportunities as students shared personal feelings through the characters in the novel.

Each student in the class took turns sharing their own perspective about stereotypical gender roles in relationships. Some took a more traditional stance, while many others shared a more open and non-traditional opinion on what they believed was acceptable or, what we were able to point out, was more in keeping with their own personal and/ or family values. This led to additional sharing about the diverse makeup of each of their families. From children whose parents were divorced and remarried, to those who were adopted from other countries, we heard a wide range of differences - noting that it’s this type of diversity that makes us so unique. One student felt comfortable enough to share

her family’s interracial make up and some of the challenges her relatives faced given their choices during a different era. The openness and honesty that this particular group of students demonstrated was quite moving, and speaks to the connection they had to one another and to the adults in the room as we encouraged and supported the conversation.

This is an example of how character education will be infused into literature classes during the 2019-2020 school year. Lower School teacher, Emily Wierdsma, will be assisting our department with these literature collaborations in the upcoming year. Her previous positions as Dean of Students and School Counselor, combined with her experience as a teacher, makes Emily an ideal staff member to help pursue this schoolwide initiative.

Lesson plans created with the unique learning needs of our particular students will be made available to our literature teachers during the upcoming school year and beyond.

Another exciting initiative for the upcoming school is a partnership with The Social Institute, led by a social media expert, Laura Tierany, who works with elementary and middle schools around the country. The mission of this organization is to equip students, parents, and staff with the tools to navigate social media and technology positively - all through positive, gamified, and student-led approaches. We are excited for this opportunity to help our school act in accordance with the EHS values both within our virtual and offline community.

As you can imagine, it “takes a village” to embark upon the goal of creating and maintaining a school community that embraces the values that provide the foundation for our social interactions. Our intention is to approach this with the help and involvement of our staff, parents, and, most importantly, the student body. It is my belief that learning to engage with one another in this way is one of the most important lessons a student can learn as part of their education in the 21st century and I am excited to partner with others to help lead this schoolwide initiative.

“ Coming to Eagle Hill… it was like Hogwarts.

I remember it being like, the coolest place ever. This place is awesome.”

T

he first time Dante Palminteri ever performed with a band was at Eagle Hill. It was the annual Mish-Mash Talent show, Dante was ten years old and he and his band of other EHS students performed the Lynryd Skynrd classic “Sweet Home Alabama.”

This spring, Dante returned to Eagle Hill for the first time, more than ten years later, to perform again. But this time, Dante was performing his own music – much of it from his debut EP “From Me to You.” Current Eagle Hill students loved hearing Dante’s music, but also listened intently to his stories about Eagle Hill, growing up with Dyslexia, and his educational journey.

“I spell with my music,” Dante told the crowd of students and teachers.

Growing up, he struggled with reading and writing, but always excelled in music. He started at Eagle Hill in 2004 and graduated in 2008. He worked hard at Eagle Hill during those four years, crediting study skills classes with Ms. Sweeney and Mr. Leonard as being particularly influential. The skills he learned in those classes – such as using numbers and symbols while taking notes – set him up for success. After Eagle Hill, he went to The Harvey School. He received his Bachelor’s from Berklee College of Music. He had a tutor during his college years and explained that it was often hard managing time on his own.

Now 24, Dante is putting in all the time and hard work it takes to have a full-time career in music. Students at Eagle Hill have no doubt he’ll succeed, with one saying “You look like Elvis Presley and sound like John Legend.” A winning combination, without a doubt!

eing a parent of an Eagle Hill graduate means your Eagle Hill Community does not end at graduation. For me, I found that even though my son Alex graduated a year and a half ago, I am still connected to the school. At Eagle Hill, I found a warm compassionate community of parents, teachers, and coaches unlike at any other school. Though Alex attended Eagle Hill for only three years, the school made a significant impact on his mind, body, and spirit as well as in our hearts. Within six months of starting in the fall of 2014, Alex’s reading level jumped close to his actual grade. The Athletic Program introduced him to Ultimate Frisbee which became an abiding love. He also spent three years on the basketball team, under Coach Hanrahan, where he learned to dunk and, more importantly, learned to be a team player.

Melissa works as a dining room server in a senior living community. She is also training to work at Walgreens. She spends her time outside of work volunteering at the Bushnell theater, where she has volunteered for five years.

Kyle is the head water polo coach at Northwood High School. He recently completed his Master’s in Teaching at Chapman University.

Lane Lombardia (1981)

Lane works at NBC Sports as a graphics engineer on an Emmy-Award winning team. He has an 11-year-old daughter (who is entering Greens Farms Academy this fall) and a 7-month-old daughter.

George Los (1996)

George has recently moved to Houston where he works for ExxonMobil in freight trading strategy.

Prior to that, George spent ten years working for a ship brokerage in Greenwich.

Peter Vishnia (1999)

Peter received his B.A. in History from Roger Williams University. After graduating, he worked as a sales manager for Terra Bella Marble for ten years. He is now in flight school to get his commercial pilots license.

Clark Weber (1981)

Christopher reports that he is still composing music. In addition to his love of music, he is a third-degree Reiki Master in multiple forms of Reiki.

Clark lives in Chicago, where he studied at the Player’s Workshop of Second City and the Second City Training Center. After struggling with mental illness, Clark has found success as a role-play actor for the Chicago Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Team. Through his work with the Crisis Intervention Team, he won the C.I.T. International Consumer of the Year award, which has allowed him to be an international advocate for mental illness.
