28th Annual Red, White & Blue Parade Sunday, July 4 | Line up at 9:30am | Parade begins at 10am SHARP! Starts at the Fleming Island Elementary & ends at the Swim Park

There is no better way to celebrate Independence Day than with a spectacular Parade! Calling all Residents!! Get creative and decorate your bicycle, motorcycle, cars, golf cart, trailers or boat for our 28th Annual Red, White and Blue Parade!

The Parade line up will begin at 9:30am in the Fleming Island Elementary School parking lot and the parade will begin at 10am SHARP. The route will begin at Fleming Island Elementary and end at the Swim Park where the festivities will continue! Please RSVP to participate in the parade today by contacting Waterfront Park at 904-621-8362. *Please Note: Eagle Harbor Parkway will be CLOSED to traffic during the duration of the Red, White & Blue Parade. Spectators are encouraged to enjoy the parade from Eagle Harbor Parkway.

Sunday, July 4 | Swim Park will open following the conclusion of the Parade • Poolside activities at Swim Park: Starting at 1:00pm Beer Dive at 3:00 pm – Soda Dive at 3:30pm • Live Poolside music at Waterfront Park and Swim Park: 11am- 4pm • Food Trucks at Swim Park: 11am – 3pm Enjoy tasty treats and be sure to bring your appetites! Snack Bar will be serving a limited menu until 3pm. The trucks accept credit cards or cash, and the prices are reasonable, so bring the family and grab lunch AND dinner!

Float poolside with the family as we show the flick “The Greatest Showman”. The Snack Bar will be open and will be serving a variety of snacks and drinks, including adult beverages! Don’t forget your favorite float!

Eagle Harbor HURRICANE SEASON Hurricane season is upon us, and although modernized weather reporting allows for more time to prepare there are things you can do to save yourself from additional damage and cleanup: • Trim dead palm fronds and any tree branches that hang over your home • Be sure your chimney is in good repair and take care of any roof leaks • Tree Removal – In accordance with community documents, Architectural Review Committee (ARC) approval is required prior to the removal of trees from residential property. This includes dead and/or diseased trees.

Should there be an impending storm, take the recommended safeguards advised by your local news media. If you take the proper precautions, there is no reason you can’t weather the storm safely.

Crime Watch It’s July already and the hot weather and bicycles are out and about in force so it may be a good time to look at the laws and rules governing bicycle operation in Florida. Bicyclist deaths for those 20 and older have tripled since 1975 according to AAA. These are the factors that lead to bicycle fatalities says AAA; Failure to yield right of way is the cause of 38 percent of crashes nationwide. Riding in dark clothes at night without lights or reflective clothing is responsible for another 10 percent, while 8 percent failed to obey traffic signals and signs and another 8 percent made improper turns. Bicyclists who do not go with the flow of traffic are putting themselves in danger. Although it maybe more comforting for a cyclist to see approaching motorists, this creates scenarios where drivers may not see them. That’s because drivers do not always check for wrong-way traffic before entering an intersection.

Florida Safe Passing Laws: Florida requires the driver of a vehicle overtaking a bicycle or other non-motorized vehicle must pass the bicycle or other non-motorized vehicle at a safe distance of not less than 3 feet between the vehicle and the bicycle or other non-motorized vehicle. Source: Fla. Stat. §316.083 Florida Helmet Law: Florida requires that any person under the age of 16 riding a bicycle, as an operator or passenger, must wear a protective bicycle helmet.

The failure of a person to wear a bicycle helmet or the failure of a parent or guardian to prevent a child from riding a bicycle without a bicycle helmet may not be considered evidence of negligence or contributory negligence. Stat. §316.2065 Where to Ride: Florida requires that a bicyclist, traveling at a speed less than the speed of traffic, must ride as close as practicable to the right-hand edge of the roadway except under any of the following circumstances:

• When overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction; • When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway; • When reasonably necessary to avoid any unsafe condition or potential conflict, including one caused by a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and another vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane; or • When a bicycle lane is available. Stat. §316.2065(5) Sidewalk Riding: Florida allows bicycles to operate on sidewalks subject to the following rules: • A person propelling a vehicle by human power upon and along a sidewalk, or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk, has all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian under the same circumstances; and • A person propelling a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk, or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk, shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian.

Mandatory Use of Separated Facilities: Florida requires that any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall ride in the lane marked for bicycle use if a lane is marked for bicycle use. Source: Fla. Stat. §316.2065(5) Bicycling Under the Influence: In Florida, bicycles are defined as vehicles. Florida's law prohibiting driving while under the influence of alcohol or other controlled substances is written so that it applies to all vehicles and therefore applies to bicyclists. Bicycles should not be operated while intoxicated and operating a bicycle while under the influence of alcohol or other controlled substances may result in severe punishments. Source: Fla.
