Granite Terms Each of the options below can be customized with any design of your choice. We have a large selection of headstone designs as well as offer custom design services. As a manufacturer, Eagle specializes in personalizing each memorial to your exact specifications.
Shape Carving
The outline of the design is sandblasted, and then shaped, to give a 3-Dimensional appearance. Shape carved designs usually include roses, flowers and praying hands.
Sandblasting/Flat Carving
A sandblasted design generally starts with a rubberized mask or template, outlining the design and then sandblasting exposes the surface of the granite to create differences in color and texture. Sandblast designs are the most requested carvings, especially on flat markers and smaller monuments.
Sculpting
Sculptures usually begin with thumbnails and full-scale drawings before the image is transferred to the granite by hand sculpting with pneumatic chisels and other granite carving tools. The quality of a hand sculpted memorial will vary depending on the individual sculptor.
Hand or Laser Etching
Hand etchings are created using diamond tipped engraving tools to draw or etch directly onto a polished monument. An etching looks best on polished black granite because this will give you the greatest contrast. Etchings can also be done using laser machines. These are called laser etchings. Either type of etching can also be hand colored after the initial design is completed. Once again, the quality of the hand coloring will vary depending on the individual in-house artist.
Sandblast Shown here are options of lettering styles available. Please check with your sales representative for advice on choosing the best fit/look for your memorial. Different fonts can add character to a gravestone. The most popular option is a Roman font or one very similar. Highly stylised fonts such as Old English and elaborate ‘script’ like fonts may look good on paper but are often very unsuitable when cutting into stone. More simple italic style fonts are often used for verses, bible passages, poetry and quotes. The type of stone can also influence the appearance of the lettering. In most circumstances letters are carved into the stone and finished with litho. It’s important to have a contrasting color between letterng and granite colors for readability.
