The $6.2 million project, completely funded via a capital campaign separate from EAA member dues, now features an innovative Pilot Proficiency Center, a hands-on Youth Education Center, and the EAA Conference Center.

These facilities allow individuals and groups to experience all of EAA’s resources on a year-round basis.

“The Education Center was built to enhance aviation education for kids and pilots unlike any other facility,” said Jack J. Pelton, EAA’s CEO and chairman of the board. “Part of EAA’s mission is to grow aviation participation by promoting The Spirit of Aviation, and I think we are doing just that with the educational and technological advancements that we now have available in this new facility. The Pilot Proficiency Center features a state-of-the-art skill-building and training center for general aviation pilots. The 16 Redbird flight simulators, located in the Pilot Proficiency Center, exhibit the greatest technology available for aviation training and education. Programming combines relevant safety forums with challenging simulator training sessions that address key flight safety issues. The new facility focuses on improving pilots’ overall aeronautical decision-making skills.

The Youth Education Center brings aviation-centric experiences to the EAA Aviation Museum yearround. The 15,000-square-foot Youth Education Center provides youths, their parents, and their teachers access to interactive and project-based activities that inspire and nurture the next generation of aviators. The education facility has five hands-on tech labs and four modifiable classrooms. It serves as another example of EAA’s dedication to fulfilling its mission through the advancement of aviation education for youths.

Primary support of the EAA Education Center expansion is from the Ray Foundation Inc., David C. Lau Estate, and an anonymous donor. Looking Back, Looking Ahead SEN. JAMES INHOFE

U.S. SEN. JAMES Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), a tireless GA advocate and EAA member, has

announced he will retire at the end of 2022 after a long tenure of public service, including more than a quarter century in the U.S. Senate. All of us at EAA thank him for his years of service and support.

After more than 40 years traveling to Oshkosh each summer, this year’s event is particularly special to me, as it will be the last year I attend before retiring from Congress this January. Those who know me know that one of my strongest passions is being an advocate for the entirety of general aviation.

As I look back on my tenure in Congress, I am reminded of everything we have gotten done. I think about when we got Bob Hoover back into the air and when the Pilot’s Bill of Rights was signed into law in 2012. Other moments that stand out include finally passing third-class medical reform, as well as enacting legislation supporting the development and spread of school curriculum necessary to maintain and grow the aviation workforce.

Even with all of the progress that we have made during my time in office, there is much to be done. This year, specifically, I am focusing my efforts on promoting and urging a safe and smart transition to unleaded aviation fuels for piston-engine aircraft. It is imperative that the federal government, fuel producers and distributors, airports, and pilots all work together to make the transition to unleaded fuels as seamless as possible, while ensuring no disruption of the supply of aviation fuel to the general aviation community.

General aviation is part of our everyday lives — from agricultural aviation to law enforcement and medical transport, to leisure and sightseeing and everything in between. Events like EAA AirVenture Oshkosh showcase how critical a safe and widely available aviation fuel is to pilots, aircraft owners, and aviation enthusiasts alike. My top priority across my entire career has been ensuring that pilots are able to safely fly when they want to fly. However, if airports are able to unilaterally ban the sale of aviation fuels before an unleaded alternative is ready, there could be disastrous consequences. I am committed to making sure we create a better future for the next generation of aviation enthusiasts, and that starts with making sure pilots have fuel available when they want to fly.

Since the last EAA AirVenture, I have worked diligently to ensure that we are continuing to move in the right direction. In the past year alone, I introduced three bills to support the aviation community through the funding of hangars to investing in the future of aviation professionals. What’s more, the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure approved my bill to create the National Center for the Advancement of Aviation (NCAA) in April of this year. The NCAA will support and promote civil, commercial, and military aviation programs to address the demands and challenges associated with ensuring a safe and vibrant national aviation system.

We have done so much together since my career in Congress began. I have always been a devoted member, outspoken supporter, and relentless defender of the general aviation community, and my last year serving in Congress is no different. I know that, together, we can accomplish anything, and I will continue to fight for our shared priorities during my last months in office.

He is also a member of the Small Business Committee and the Environment & Public Works Committee, where he leads the Clean Air, Climate, and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee as ranking member. Sen. Inhofe is an avid pilot and committed supporter of infrastructure for the United States to drive the world’s economy.

PLANETAGS: OWN A PIECE OF AVIATION HISTORY

WHEN DAVE HALL, EAA 1475042, began MotoArt 21 years ago, it was simply a hobby

that “kind of spun out of control a little bit.” Initially calling the company Propeller Art, Dave and his former business partner rescued old propellers, polished them, and then created sculptures with them. The business soon expanded into usable furniture made of discarded aircraft parts and grew from there. About six years ago, a new part of Dave’s business emerged — PlaneTags.

“I had the idea for PlaneTags numerous years before that. I was working on an old P-51 Mustang and had the damaged air scoop that a client had brought in. And I realized that we couldn’t get rid of the material because it was the authentic skin from this P-51,” Dave explained. “So I ran up and penciled out an idea. And instead of like a dog tag, we’ll come up with a plane tag, and I actually made a prototype and that sucker sat in my pocket for years before I finally acted on it. One year for Christmas, I came up with six different plane tags on a Black Friday, hoping to see that it would take off.”

Take off it has. While MotoArt continues to produce high-end furniture, PlaneTags has grown from an idea to a separate business. Dave estimated the company has documented around 140 different aircraft types with tags produced out of authentic skins. The company works with a variety of museums and organizations to acquire skins to create new tags.

“AND I REALIZED THAT WE COULDN’T GET RID OF THE MATERIAL BECAUSE IT WAS THE AUTHENTIC SKIN FROM THIS P-51. SO I RAN UP AND PENCILED OUT AN IDEA. AND INSTEAD OF LIKE A DOG TAG, WE’LL COME UP WITH A PLANE TAG.” DAVE HALL

“We are working with a lot of different museums now who become advocates of our work, including Pima Air & Space,” Dave said. “We just heard the Smithsonian National Museum will be carrying our work starting in September. And what’s great is a lot of new aircraft are really coming out of the woodwork for us, with lots of different museums and people participating with trying to add to the PlaneTags collection.

Really our goal is really trying to categorize aviation history as best as we can.”

While MotoArt has exhibited at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh before, 2022 will be the first time PlaneTags will be represented at the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration. The MotoArt/PlaneTags booth is No. 2021 in the Collins Aerospace Exhibit Hangar B. Additionally, Dave plans to check out the inventory EAA has available for potential future B-17 Aluminum Overcast tags.

With it being the first time PlaneTags will be at AirVenture, Dave is excited to interact in person with folks who’ve already started collecting, as well as introduce more aviation enthusiasts to his unique product.

“To me, it’s almost an educational purpose. A lot of people might have seen us on social media advertising or friends might have a PlaneTag, but what we like to do is educate everyone on what we’re trying to do and show them the work and show them that these are the genuine skins. This is genuine paint that you see on them. … What we’re really looking forward to is just to be able to talk and educate everyone on PlaneTags and hopefully they walk away with one. It’s a little contagious. People start with one PlaneTag, and we always say, everyone remembers their first PlaneTag, because before you know it, you’re collecting your own fleet of aircraft and the tags.”

AirVenture Prepared for Whatever Weather Brings

“BE PREPARED” MAY be the Boy Scouts of America’s motto.

But it could be EAA’s motto as well, especially when it comes to weather during its annual fly-in convention.

“We’ve had hazardous weather policies in effect for well over a decade,” said Dick Knapinski, EAA’s director of communications. But in recent years EAA has worked with the National Weather Service and is now one of the few major events in Wisconsin that has the NWS’s storm ready designation.

“That means we have worked with the National Weather Service and have a specific plan on how to react to any major weather event that may occur,” Knapinski said. A lot of the plan is done at the front end in creating that sequence of events that should take place, rather than just reacting to situations, he said.

For instance, for Saturday’s storm, EAA, the National Weather Service, the Winnebago County Emergency office, and others started watching the weather days before, knowing it could have an impact on AirVenture activities. Then,

on Saturday, when it was clear that the bad weather was coming, they met three or four times to monitor the storm’s progress. By afternoon, EAA was sending out text messages and adding alerts to its social media accounts, as well as putting messages on the PA system, about the storm and precautions that people should take for themselves, their airplanes, and other belongings. In case of tornadoes, EAA also has sirens on the grounds that they can use to warn people.

“We first started telling people that bad weather was coming, then later encouraged them to prepare by doing things like tying down airplanes, and then told them exactly when the bad weather was expected to arrive,” Knapinski said. “We were very specific so people could react and make their own decisions, whether that meant taking shelter in EAA’s museum, getting off the grounds, deciding how to secure their objects, or whatever.”

During a storm in 2021, EAA also worked with the Oshkosh Arena to open its doors for campers and others on the grounds who needed a place to take refuge.

Knapinski praised the pilot community for taking weather seriously. “Thankfully, the pilot community is probably one of the most aware of the country,” he said, so they take the warnings seriously. “They listened.

They tied down their airplanes. They prepared.”

He said there was no reported injuries due to Saturday’s storm. Damage was limited mainly to downed branches and trees in the campground, an airplane that flipped on its nose despite being properly tied down near the chapel, and damage to some aircraft on Boeing Plaza, likely caused after they were hit by moving debris.

SIX NEW ABLE Flight pilots who use wheelchairs will be honored at a pilot wings pin-

ning ceremony at EAA AirVenture on Tuesday, July 26, at 10 a.m. at Theater in the Woods. All six use wheelchairs, and include a veteran wounded in combat and another veteran who became disabled through an accident. Andy Burnette, Ryan Chen, Stephanie Cibello, Austin “Chance” Field, Nathaniel Miller, and Chris Murad earned their pilot certificates during the scholarship organization’s intensive training program at Purdue University between late May and early July.

The pilots will also be honored individually at the ceremony as recipients of scholarships provided by ForeFlight, Tempest Aero Group, and Muncie Aviation.

And this year, Able Flight will recognize the first two scholarships honoring the support of Zack Reising (Blue 7 Scholarship) and Adam Kisielewski (U.S. Marine Corps, retired).

2022 marks the 12th year of Able Flight’s partnership with Purdue University, and its 16th year of providing full-ride flight-training scholarships and aviation career training scholarships. Able Flight has 83 certificated pilots, including several who have earned multiple pilot certificates. Special guests will include Aviation Hall of Fame inductee Patty Wagstaff and Jessica Cox, along with representatives of the TBM Owners and Pilots Association Foundation.

FLIGHT DEMOS HIGHLIGHT AIR SHOWS AT EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2022 MILITARY DEMONSTRATION TEAMS, jetliners,

and unique aircraft of all types will be part of the weeklong aerial display lineup at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh on July 25-31, the 69th edition of EAA’s fly-in convention held at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

IN 2017, I fulfilled a lifelong dream and attended my first EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.

I’m not a certificated pilot so I went all in and drove up solo 1,200 miles from Texas to Wisconsin in my Suburban carrying clothes, camping gear, all my camera and video equipment, a bicycle, wagon, and one other item I was excited to bring along: a radio-controlled model airplane.

As an avid RC pilot and a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) for more than 40 years, I was pleasantly surprised to read on EAA’s website that RC flying was scheduled in the evenings on the Pioneer Airport runway behind the EAA Aviation Museum. I’ve never heard of this being allowed at any other full-scale air LAST YEAR, I WAS ABLE TO show. This was a great opportunity to fly my model airplanes surrounded by hunBRING MY SONS AND LET dreds of vintage, warbird, commercial, military, and experimental aircraft.

On my first day at the RC flying area, several people were already at the site, and fun flying was in full swing. This wasn’t a group of only RC modelers; there were also full-scale pilots who brought their airplanes with them and a lot of onlookers. Horizon Hobby, a nationwide hobby supplier that sponsors the RC flying activities, was on-site offering demo flights on trainer airplanes to both young and old beginner pilots. I felt like a kid because I was grinning ear to ear once it was my turn to fly, and that smile was stuck on my face for the rest of the week! I’m not sure how I can put it into words, but while flying, it felt like I was one of the scheduled performers putting on an air show for other guests at AirVenture. It’s a memory I’ll never forget.

Last year, I was able to bring my sons and let them experience the same thing their dad felt back in 2017. It was neat to see them enjoying themselves out there and watch as they taught other beginners to fly and assist with repairs and battery charging. My father and I shared a similar bond flying model airplanes together when I was growing up. I’m glad I get to do the same thing with my boys at such an amazing aviation experience like EAA’s AirVenture.

The AMA hosts evening RC flying next to Pioneer Runway (behind the museum) between 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Aircraft must be electric and weigh less than 6.5 pounds. RC pilots must be current AMA members. Non-AMA members may purchase a 3MT (three-month trial) membership for only $5 through their partnership with EAA. Pilots must also take FAA’s TRUST exam. Assistance with AMA registration and the TRUST exam will be offered by AMA staff and EAA volunteers. Hope to see you there!

EAA’s AeroEducate program, formally unveiled at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021, is a bold new program that opens a wide spectrum of possibilities that is interactive, educational, and engaging for young people ages 5 to 18 years old.

AeroEducate’s web-based resource provides clear, age-appropriate pathways to aviation and aerospace engagement, and even career paths.

Under the agreement, those enrolling in Dynamic Aviation’s NEXTGEN Aviators program will have the opportunity to enroll in AeroEducate and receive AeroEducate badging credit for participating. In addition, local EAA chapters will have the option of participating at local NEXTGEN events in their areas.

Dynamic Aviation may also organize youth-oriented NEXTGEN events at AirVenture each summer.

AIRCRAFT ELECTRONICS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES FREE GUIDE, CASH PRIZE PUBLISHED ANNUALLY BY the Aircraft Electronics Association, the 2022-

23 edition of the AEA Pilot’s Guide will be unveiled with free distribution at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh this week. AEA staff members will distribute thousands of complimentary copies to pilots and aircraft owners at AEA’s booth, 2035-2036, in Hangar B. This year marks the 20th annual edition of the AEA Pilot’s Guide, a consumer’s directory loaded with educational articles, timely information, and data about the ever-changing world of avionics technologies.

The publication helps pilots and aircraft owners make better buying decisions and locate nearly 1,300 AEA member companies in more than 40 countries, including government-certified repair stations specializing in maintenance, repair, and installation of avionics and electronic systems in general aviation aircraft. It also includes the manufacturers and distributors of these products, as well as technical schools and universities, engineers, and consultants for the industry.

In addition to the initial distribution at AirVenture, thousands of copies of the AEA Pilot’s Guide will be distributed at several industry trade shows and to all AEA member companies at no charge.

Individuals residing in the United States may request a free copy of the AEA Pilot’s Guide at AEAPilotsGuide.net/request.asp while supplies last.

In addition to the AEA Pilot’s Guide, the organization will randomly award five aircraft owners with $1,000 toward an avionics upgrade during AirVenture.

Aircraft owners may enter to win one of the five $1,000 awards in Hangar B, Booth 2035-2036, beginning July 25. The AEA will announce one winner each day from July 25 through July 29 via its social media outlets on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. PS Engineering Introduces New Digital Audio Controller PS ENGINEERING’S NEW digital audio

controller, the PMA450C, is a lowercost version of the company’s flagship g e n e r a l av i a t i o n p r o d u c t , t h e PMA450B. Since introduction in 2014, the PMA450 series has proven popular in the market, with advanced features like dual Bluetooth and the I n t e l l i Au d i o p ro c e s s i n g s y st e m licensed from the USAF. Pilots love them — but sometimes they just don’t need all the functions.

One way to reduce the price was to change the type of hardware used on the PMA450C, providing a significant reduction in hardware costs. While the PMA450B provides nine unique positions to place the com 1 and com 2 audio, the PMA450C only provides the most popular locations of 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock.

Another cost savings in the design was the removal of Flightmate, audio streaming output, and the count-up/

c o u n t - d o w n t i m e r. W h i l e t h e PMA450B retains those capabilities, not all pilots have the need for customizable audio alert functions and the PMA450C does not support this function, helping to reduce the cost of the overall system.

One thing that hasn’t been changed is the intuitive graphical user interface.

The OLED display can be viewed by just about anyone in the cockpit, and with the three-softkey selection, setting up the audio panel configuration is easy.

Another one of PS Engineering’s innovations (now common, but not so in 2006) is the practical application of Bluetooth connectivity in the aircraft.

The dual Bluetooth design allows two completely independent devices to be paired and selected to listen to, just like the PMA450B. The PMA450C has a list price of only $2,595 while the PMA450B continues to sell at $2,895.

Volunteer Pilots Give Hope

WHEN REED’S PARENTS contacted LifeLine Pilots, an Illinois-

based volunteer pilot organization, they had already been fighting childhood cancer for many years. After being diagnosed at the age of 10 and beating cancer once, 13-year-old Reed once again needed to travel between his home in central Illinois and St. Jude in Memphis, Tennessee.

A family member said, “Reed’s parents have dedicated all of their time to helping him fight this horrible childhood disease. It was such a blessing that LifeLine Pilots was there to transport Reed and his mom to St. Jude for treatment. The travel time to drive to Memphis takes a toll on both Reed and his parents, and being able to fly to Memphis made the trip much less stressful.”

Every day, volunteer pilots are changing lives through flight. They generously share their special skills to fly people like Reed to medical treatment far from home.

“These pilots give Reed a few hours away from treatment, up in the clouds,” said his family.

WHAT IS THE MISSION OF LIFELINE PILOTS? LifeLine Pilots coordinates free air transportation, through volunteer pilots, for people with medical or humanitarian needs far from home. Each year, its volunteer pilots complete hundreds of missions, bringing patients to and from lifesaving medical care.

WHO ARE THE VOLUNTEER PILOTS? Volunteer pilots are located throughout our 10-state region and come from a variety of backgrounds. Some fly once a month, while others take a volunteer flight once a year. Every flight helps a family in need.

The pilots donate their aircraft, the fuel/airport costs, their time, and their expertise. They do this because they want to use their love of flying to help others in need. The pilots are not allowed to take any money for the flight, but each mission is tax-deductible for the pilots.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? If you live in the Midwest, LifeLine Pilots has an easy-to-complete volunteer application form available at LifeLinePilots.org. To become a volunteer pilot, you must be 21 years old, have 250 hours as PIC, have your current medical and insurance documents, and complete the AOPA Public Benefit Flying online course.

If you live outside the Midwest, there are volunteer pilot organizations located throughout the country looking for volunteers. The Air Care Alliance (ACA) is a public service organization supporting public benefit flying. The ACA publishes a list of volunteer pilot organizations at AirCareAlliance.org.

Honoring those behind the scenes

EVERY YEAR, THOUSANDS of volunteers work together to make AirVenture and all EAA

programs run. This year, six volunteers, nominated by their peers, have been chosen to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is given to volunteers who have gone above and beyond in the giving of their “time, talents, and knowledge for the betterment of EAA.” Honored this year are John and Becky Lowe, Jerry Burke, Harry and Jan Crisman, and Jim Moss, who received their awards on Sunday, July 24, during the Volunteer of the Year Awards ceremony in Volunteer Park.

John, EAA 522935, and Becky Lowe, EAA 696676, are chairmen for Operation Thirst and the Volunteer Kitchen, working to feed over 1,000 volunteers and employees every day during AirVenture.

“We got an army in here,” John said.

“Those guys also are chopping vegetables, chopping melons. And then we got the back room with the ovens and stuff and we’re baking everything. And the guys out here washing dishes. And I mean, it’s a full restaurant operation going on. … We’re feeding a thousand people a day.”

“There are many, many, many moving parts,” Becky said. “When we said we’d do this, I had no idea what I was involved in. I’ve enjoyed it. I have PHOTO BY ERIN HENZE made wonderful friendships ... they are all so lovely. I look forward to them.”

John and Becky said they were overwhelmed when they found out they were being honored as Volunteers of the Year.

“I don’t know who nominated us or why,” Becky said. “It brought tears to my eyes, actually.”

Jerry Burke, EAA 365400, officially started volunteering in 2007, but has been working with EAA since 1970. Working at a local news station, Jerry helped bring a large media presence to AirVenture. After retiring, Jerry worked with Tom Poberezny to put together “Plane Talk,” a series of Q&As with pilots and crew at their aircraft.

“I would do my background research on each person that I was going to do, and we’d do the Q&A with the pilot or the crew,” Jerry said. “I would open it up after for maybe 15 or 20 minutes to the members that had gathered around, the people in the audience, and let them ask questions.”

At 81 years old, Jerry is semiretired from “Plane Talk,” doing only a few this year before he fully retires.

“Two or three a day would be fine by me, because I love doing these,” Jerry explained.

Despite being a part of AirVenture for over 50 years, Jerry didn’t think he deserved to win the Volunteer of the PHOTO BY JIM KOEPNICK Year Award.

MONDAY, JULY 25, 2022 “There’s a lot of other people I think deserve this more than me that have been out there a lot more years than I have,” Jerry said, “but I’m very flattered and humbled. There’s a lot of good memories.”

Harry, EAA 16857, and Jan Crisman have been volunteering at AirVenture on and off since the original air show in Rockford in 1963.

“Our first time was in 1963 in Rockford,” Harry said. “I ended up stringing banners that day. We were there only two days.”

They’ve done a variety of jobs, including hauling gravel, mowing grass, and burning the flightline.

And, for the most part, they ’ve been working together.

“One year I stayed home, and he came up here by himself for a while,” Jan said. “I found a ride to come up with some neighbors, because I didn’t like being alone.”

“I embarrassed her,” Harry said. “I kissed her right out in front of everybody!”

After working together for so long, winning the Volunteer of the Year award was a welcome surprise.

“Very honored,” Harry said on how he felt upon winning. “There’s other people that are chairmen and that do a lot more than we do. We contribute what we’re capable of doing.”

Finally, Jim Moss, EAA 80553, has been volunteering at AirVenture for over 50 years, starting when he was just in his teens. He talked his way into fixing bikes during 1972, eventually becoming the chairman of safety, and he couldn’t be happier.

“I don’t come here for the airplanes, I come here for the people,” Jim said. “I’ve been coming back ever since I started working full time, just because of the people. … I’ve been doing this basically all my life …

It’s just so much fun!”

When Jim arrived to volunteer this summer, he was given a letter. He joked that he was getting fired, but was shocked when he opened it up.

“I read the letter from Jack and said, ‘Come on, you’re pulling my leg,’” Jim said. “It’s just absolutely out of the blue. I work like everybody else does.”

Jim wants to encourage more people to come out and volunteer.

“You’re going to have fun, no matter what you do,” Jim said. “To new volunteers, young, old, and in between, come out and do it. You don’t really know the convention or know the membership until you start volunteering.”

the spirit of aeronautical exploration, Quesst is what NASA is calling its mission to enable supersonic air travel over land. This moniker — complete with an extra “s” to represent “supersonic” — draws its inspiration from NASA’s long legacy of supersonic flight research.

The mission’s centerpiece is the sleek research plane known as the X-59, which Lockheed Martin Skunk Works is currently building in Palmdale, California.

Quesst replaces the mission’s original name: the Low-Boom Flight Demonstration.

“With Quesst, we’ve found a name that more effectively conveys the purpose, relevance, and — most importantly — excitement of what this mission is all about,” said Peter Coen, NASA’s mission integration manager for Quesst.

Through Quesst, NASA plans to demonstrate that the X-59 can fly faster than sound without generating the loud sonic booms supersonic aircraft typically produce. This thunderous sound is the reason the United States and other governments banned most supersonic flight over land.

Working with select communities, NASA will fly the X-59 to learn how people react to the diminished sonic “thump” it produces — if they hear anything at all. The agency will share survey data with regulators, with the hope they will consider writing new rules that lift the ban.

THE QUESST PLAN To achieve its mission goals, NASA has laid out Quesst in three phases.

The first and current phase focuses on the assembly of the X-59, followed by initial flights planned for later this year to prove the safety and performance of the aircraft.

The second phase, expected to take place during 2023, will focus on acoustic validation. During this phase, the mission will prove the X-59 is ready for regular operations in the national airspace system.

The aircraft will fly over NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, to demonstrate that the supersonic technologies work as designed. The flights will also show that the tools used to predict and measure the sound level of the sonic thump are ready for use in phase three.

Likely the most anticipated point in the mission, phase three will feature the X-59 flying over several communities across the United States, gathering data from the public to learn what people think of the X-59’s sound. This phase is expected to take place in 2024 through 2026. NASA has yet to select the communities.

The mission is set to wrap up in 2027 by taking the information collected during phase three and sharing it with U.S. and international regulators. With the information gathered during the Quesst mission, the hope is to enable regulators to consider rules based on how loud an aircraft is, not based on an arbitrary speed.

“The Quesst mission has the potential to transform air travel as we currently know it,” Coen said. “Success of this mission will open the door to fast air travel for everyone across the globe.”

EAA Aviation Museum Highlights YOUR VISIT TO Oshkosh for AirVenture 2022 isn’t complete without a trip to the EAA

Aviation Museum. Here’s one example of the approximately 200 aircraft on display in this world-class facility.

1912 CURTISS A-1 PUSHER, SWEETHEART, N24034 Built in the Glen H. Curtiss shops at Hammondsport, New York, in 1912, the Curtiss Pusher Model E-8-75 was shipped to San Diego, California, and used for pilot training at the Curtiss facility on Coronado Island. John Kaminski of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a student at the flying school, bought the aircraft in May of 1912 and shipped it back to Wisconsin for exhibition use. John was the first licensed pilot in Wisconsin and was the one who nicknamed the Pusher Sweetheart.

In 1915, the Curtiss Pusher was sold to a blacksmith in Sullivan, Wisconsin, who used the engine on an iceboat. The airframe was stored in a barn until discovered in 1940 by a CAA inspector named A.C. Goddard, who bought the remains. A restoration was started, but the task had not been completed when Goddard lost his life in an auto accident in 1956.

The aircraft’s remains were purchased from the Goddard estate by Dale Crites of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and, together with Earl Cox of Hartland, Wisconsin, a total rebuild was accomplished over a 10-year period. On June 17, 1966, 53 years after the airplane had last flown, Dale Crites flew the Pusher, with its unique yoke aileron control operated by the pilot’s shoulders.

The Curtiss Pusher used all-wood construction, including fuselage poles made of bamboo and balloon cloth fabric stretched over the wings and tacked into place.

The controls consisted of a combination of a wheel for rudder control, stick for elevator, a foot pedal for throttle, and a shoulder harness for ailerons. The original throttle pedal remains in front of the rudder bar, but a small lever-type throttle attached to the seat actually controlled the power in the Pusher’s later years.

Dale Crites donated the Curtiss Pusher to the EAA Aviation Museum in 1969 after numerous exhibition flights. At that time, it was the oldest licensed airplane still flying in the United States. Now Sweetheart rests in the shadows of the Wright Flyer replica as part of a display in tribute to the first days of flight.
