W

elcome to the September and October edition of The West Essex Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory.

How was summer for you? I know. Rain, floods, cold for the time of year. Just my sort of thing.

I didn’t much like that bit where it got hot for a while. Luckily it was only for an hour. But it gives us something to talk about. And I shouldn’t really be too smug – I know that a lot of you enjoy the sun and the heat. Sorry about that. Personally, I love autumn, mists around the golden leaves on beech trees, crisp frost encrusting the fragile flesh of fungi.

Personally I’ve been dead busy this summer and it’s been a hoot. I’ve been working in Epping Forest, helping to get the new Information Centre ready for you all.

Phew. Just got it done in time and boy do my arms ache.

The View Coaches, courtyards and cow pats

W

henever I see a coach house and a stable and a courtyard in between, I have this unstoppable desire to link them with a glass atrium. It’s just the way I am. I believe that there are groups for people like me.

Architects Anonymous. We just join things up with glass. The City of London Corporation must feel the same way. The former Victorian coach house and stables of the adjoining Royal Forest Hotel in Chingford have been linked by a glass atrium to form the new Information Centre for Epping Forest, and the new building is called The View.

The building of the Royal Forest Hotel next door was completed by Edmond Egan, a local man. The “Royal” bit was added in 1882 after the visit of Queen Victoria. The coach house and stables sur-

vived the fire of 1912, and were later used as a garage for Dan’s Coaches.

100 years on from the fire, after periods spent being offices and storage, these buildings, joined by that glass, have found a new lease of life.

Many locals will have seen the work ongoing, with hoardings and scaffolding and stuff. But on 12th July this year the swaddling of planks and tape was pulled aside to reveal the newest addition to Epping Forest’s heritage.

To a design by Freeland Rees Roberts, the stable paving of the courtyard and the wide glass doors hint at the buildings’ former use for coaches and horses. Sometimes, when someone does something bold, reaction will be mixed. There are even those amongst us, especially people with that whole glass atrium hang-up, who want to criticise.

Heaven only knows I tried. But everybody seems to love it, inside and out.

Now come with me, and let us explore this strange new building in our backyard. When children enter, with adults, the children veer sharply to the left, into the gift shop. The adults tug at young wrists imploringly. Behind the counter, the charming staff (except for me – I’m horrible) patiently explain that to their right is a display called ‘Who Lives In Epping Forest?’ Still the children tug.

“There are buttons to press that make noises for each season,” the staff patiently explain.

Leaving the ground floor and the delightful staff (except me – I’m now quite unbearable), stairs or a lift take you to the top floor.

There’s a temporary Exhibition Room up here. All sorts of things will happen in here in years to come. At the moment there are photos showing some of the work that has been done towards the Discovering Epping Forest project. Retracing our steps, as they say in all the best guidebooks, we come to a series of rooms that illustrate the chequered history of Epping Forest with a series of questions and some answers.

Who Saved Epping Forest? Was it the commoners? Was it the landowners? You decide. There’s a

cow that moos, some old cattle brands and a cow pat. And if that doesn’t get you to visit, then frankly I don’t know what would.

Who Needs Epping Forest?

That’s an easier one. Trees, cattle, cyclists, footballers, picnickers. Just about everybody. Even me, in a horrible begrudging sort of way. There’s history too, the retreats and the people who depended on the forest for a living.

There’s also a lonely mute swan and an unexploded shell… somewhere.

Who Cares for Epping Forest? This last display focuses more on the threats that the Forest has faced over the centuries. War, pollution and litter.

Me being horrible all the time. It tells too the story of the keepers and the litter-pickers who keep our forest looking lovely.

I’ve saved the best bit until last. No, it’s not me, though bless you for thinking so. It’s something far less horrible, but it is coincidentally very wooden, creaks a bit and looks exceedingly old. It’s a green oak balcony, accessible by lift so that wheelchair users can share the view that they have not been able to enjoy from the Hunting Lodge. Traditionally built and held together with wooden pins, it’s why The View is called The View.

Come and see me sometime and I promise not to be too horrible.

More library users keeping in touch with Essex Libraries

M

ore Essex Library users than ever are keeping in touch with the latest developments from their local library, with over 30,000 now signed up to the monthly newsletter, over 2,000 followers on Twitter and over 800 users on Facebook.

The Essex Libraries YouTube channel is a brilliant new way to get reading inspiration. There are separate playlists featuring reading ideas for adults, stories for children, top teen reads and a book of the month suggestion. There’s also a Discover Essex Libraries playlist featuring a range of short videos trailing the different types of services available.

Library users can sign up to the library Enewsletter, a monthly update from the library service, highlighting a selection of books that may be of interest, updates on library events and features on the online resources that are available free of charge to library members. There is a separate reading groups E-newsletter published every two months, highlighting books that are ideal for group discussions and featuring a competition to win a batch of books for your reading group.

Library users can also keep in touch via Twitter featuring library news and reminders about all of the services available to members. Essex Library Service’s Facebook page is the ideal place to interact with other members, discuss library services and share your reading recommendations and views with others.

County Councillor Jeremy Lucas, Cabinet Member for Customer Service, Environment and Culture said: “With many different ways of keeping in touch, our members are never far away from news and reading inspiration from their local library. East London Bridge Club

HAVE FUN LEARNING TO PLAY BRIDGE Ray Green invites you to join the East London Bridge Club.

This is what he said, “Bridge is a trick taking game of skill and chance played by four players who form two partnerships; the partners sit opposite each other at the table.

Bridge can be a lifelong pursuit and a learning process that never ends. It can be exciting, challenging, frustrating but never boring.

It is a social card game that includes strategy, trust and teamwork. You can develop friendships with others who are learning and already playing bridge. It is also a great way to sharpen your memory and exercise the brain.

Once you have learnt the basics of bridge you are able to practice with friends. The only cost is a couple of packs of cards and the tea and biscuits.

From Monday 15th October I shall be giving evening lessons from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. These will be on every Monday except Christmas and bank holidays.

I am offering a 32-lesson course that will cover all aspects of this interesting game and help you to be ready to play in one of the many local bridge clubs.

Each 2-hour lesson including a tea/coffee and biscuit break is £10 per person. You only pay for the lessons you attend and will be given the opportunity to cover missed lessons on a later course. On these lessons you will be partnered with another member of the class. You are of course welcome to join with one or more friends and learn in a relaxing, comfortable home environment.

Later in this course I also offer supervised bridge play. These are 2 hour play sessions on Wednesday afternoons 2.30-4.30 pm and on Thursday evenings 7.30-9.30 pm.

For those who wish to improve their bridge play I organise intermediate evening lessons on the second

Duke of Gloucester opens the gate to Epping Forest New visitor centre reveals stunning views

H

RH The Duke of Gloucester - the official Ranger of Epping Forest – formally opened Epping Forest’s new ‘The View’ visitor centre in July.

The event marked the climax of the hugely successful redevelopment of the entire Epping Forest Gateway, where three exciting visitor attractions mark the entrance to the internationally acclaimed open space.

The Epping Forest Gateway on Rangers Road only a short walk from Chingford station - centres on the Grade II* listed Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, which dates to 1543. It is now complemented by a new visitor centre at The View, the Butler’s Retreat café situated in a restored 19th century barn and attractive new landscaping.

All of these developments have been made possible with the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), which awarded the City of London Corporation £4.76m towards its Branching Out project. Related landscaping improvements include the accessible trail at nearby Connaught Water and car park resurfacing.

The View is a stunning contemporary building by architects Freeland Rees Roberts. Its bold but simple, transparent façade links the former Victorian coach house and stables, inviting visitors upstairs to enjoy the views of the Forest from the external timber walkway, as royalty once did from the adjacent hunting lodge.

It is a fully accessible building, incorporating a new learning and community room, featuring sustainable solar panels and a rain water harvester, as well as the use of traditional materials to harmonise with its setting.

Exhibition designers CodSteaks have used this exciting space to tell the story of Epping Forest in a highly original way, based on research at the London Metropolitan Archives and the City of London Corporation’s museum collection. The enthralling display is designed to appeal to all ages. Who saved Epping Forest in the first place? Who lives there now? The answers to these and other questions may surprise you.

There is also a shop offering great quality, Forestrelated items for sale and a community room available for hire.

However, the main attraction remains the Forest itself, so there will be plenty of ideas for places to visit and things to do, whether you’re new to the Forest or not.

Alderman Gordon Haines, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Epping Forest and Commons Committee, said: “The new Epping Forest Centre is a wonderful asset to visitors, to all London’s communities and to the City of London Corporation. We are very grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for enabling us to realise this dream of telling the fascinating and important story of Epping Forest in a new and relevant way."

Carole Souter, Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “Epping Forest is a remarkable part of our natural heritage, famed for its ancient pollarded trees, which have survived for hundreds of years. As the main funder of the Branching Out project, the Heritage Lottery Fund is pleased to be celebrating the completion of this wonderful new visitor centre and proud to have forged close working ties with the City of London Corporation.”

The new centre will be open every day throughout the year, apart from Christmas day, with staff and volunteers on hand to help you make the most of your visit.

Essex population rises by over 82,000 in ten years

ssex County Council has responded to the 2011 census estimates which show a rise in the population of Essex by 6.3%.

The 2011 census data released last month shows the resident population of Essex has increased to 1,393,600 in 2011 compared to 1,310,836 in 2001, an increase of 82,764.

Councillor Peter Martin, Leader of the Essex County Council, said “Essex County Council is dedicated to improving Essex and the lives of our residents.

We have to carefully plan demand for our major services, and census data is an invaluable source to support our own research estimates and our commitment to the county and our priorities for change over the next five years.“ The following population changes in Essex have also been identified since the 2001 Census:

The proportion of those aged over 65 in Essex is reported as 18.3%, 1.9 percentage points higher than the national figure of 16.4%.

Commenting on the census data for Essex highlighting a 1.9 percentage points higher than national population aged over 65, and almost 44% increase since 2001 in those aged 90 and over, Cllr Martin continued: “As one of the largest, most populous counties in the UK we have recognised that Essex has an ageing population and the census data confirms this both nationally and for our county. We have made a long-term commitment to Essex citizens and communities of all ages, and this will ensure we provide targeted services that deliver real value for money in the coming years.”

The Census is carried out once every ten years and it aims to give a clear picture of the people living in each area of the country. It enables the County Council, local authorities and central government to determine which services are required in the county including education, healthcare and transport.

2011 compared to 8,479 at the time of the last census in 2001 – this was an increase of 3,721 or 43.8% above the 2001 figure.

The largest proportion of those aged 65 and over are in the district of Tendring where the group accounted for 14.6% of the total population of Essex aged 65 and over.

Essex has shown a trend in the increase in numbers of people approaching retirement age and recently retired.

The Median age of the population of England and

Wales in 2011 was 39. In 1911 the median age was 25, clearly illustrating that across the UK we have an ageing population.

Miniature Steam Train Rides in Chingford's Ridgeway Park Every Sunday & Bank Holiday afternoon from 2pm to 5:30pm during the summer (April until October) train rides are available at 50p or ÂŁ1 depending on the track (1000 foot long 5" raised level track and a 3000 foot long 7Âź" ground level track).

Community Events and What’s On CREAM TEAS St Mary's Church, High Road, Chigwell Village will be serving Cream Teas on Sunday afternoons from 2.00 to 4.00 pm throughout the summer until 9th September. Come and look round the Church, parts of which date back to the 12th century, and enjoy a delicious Cream Tea in the historic atmosphere.

CRAFT & ART ON THE GREEN Saturday 1st September, The Green, North Chingford, outside of the library, E4, 10am to 4.30pm. An art exhibition and sale as well as stunning crafts for the Summer.

CHINGFORD HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY All shows (of which there are four per year) take place in Mornington Hall, Chingford (opposite Ss Peter & Paul Parish Church). ummer is at an end. While it hasn’t been the best of summers regarding the weather, the London Olympics has kept a smile on everyone’s face. In September and October there are exciting cinema releases and anyone missing the Olympics doesn’t have to wait long to watch it all again. Enjoy!

Released: 7th September - Lawless Based on a true story, this is the tale of the Bondurant brothers, played perfectly by Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy. They run an illegal alcohol racket in Virginia during America’s prohibition and are threatened by the law. Not with jail though, but for a cut of their profits. The narrative, design, cinematography and acting are all top drawer and this film will be a contender for the BAFTA Awards and Oscars.

28th September - The Campaign This motion picture is essentially ‘Anchorman’ does politics. Will Ferrell plays long-term congressman Cam Brady; a good, honest politician. However, two CEOs want to get rid of him so they put up a rival candidate. Their man: naive director of the local Tourism Centre Marty Huggins (played by Zach Galifianakis). This is a good comedy that wisely doesn’t try to lecture about the evils of political campaigning.

4th October - Taken 2 Liam Neeson returns as retired CIA operative Bryan Mills. To recover from the death and destruction of the first film, Bryan takes his family on holiday to Istanbul. However, the Albania mafia have sworn revenge and kidnap his wife. Bryan must again fight through hordes of thugs to save his family. But as Lady Bracknell might say ‘to lose one family member may be regarded as misfortune. To lose two seems like carelessness’. A poor sequel.

12th October - Private Peaceful Last year Spielberg stunned viewers with the film ‘War Horse’. From the same writer, Michael Morpurgo, comes a gritty tale about the lives and loves of brothers Tommo and Charlie. In 1916 the outbreak of the First World War destroys their country idyll and they join up to survive gas attacks, German troops and appalling death and destruction. But can they escape summary military justice? It may not have the A-list cast but this is just as good as ‘War Horse’.

DVDs to please The summer blockbusters burst on to DVD and BluRay throughout September and October. The Hunger Games (3rd Sept on DVD rrp: £14.99 and BluRay rrp: £19.99) is a thrilling adventure and they don’t come much bigger or ‘blockbustier’ than Marvel Avengers Assemble (17th Sept DVD rrp: £14.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £19.99). Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’ prequel Prometheus (8th Oct on DVD rrp: £14.99 and BluRay rrp: £19.99) is visually stunning while anyone missing the Olympics will be thrilled by the Complete London 2012 Olympic Games Broadcast (29th Oct on DVD rrp: £29.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £34.99).
