elcome to the January and February edition of The West Essex Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory. A Happy New Year to all of our readers from all of us. I like New Year. It brings with it that feeling of hope, the notion that things may change for the better, the inevitable vows that we make each year, the ensuing realisation that we probably won’t stick to these promises for more than a couple of hours, the immediate fear thereupon that things in fact will just get worse, the dawning idea that the year ahead is going to be full of tribulations, the fact that it’s still winter and it’s only going to get worse and worse until mid-May or so. And it’s dark by noon. There’s nothing on TV. Ever. I don’t really think that I like New Year at all, come to think of it. I want the old one back. That was great. Life was one long laugh, every day was a pleasure, we were all younger and fitter. I seem to recall that golden coins showered

Epping Forest’s Veteran Trees or Trees, Triptychs and Tottenham Hotspur

Warren Pond

I

t’s no fun getting old. You stop growing. You groan when the weather changes. Bright young things come along and look just so much better than you do. Then some clever so-and-so comes along and lops bits off the top of you. It’s no fun at all being a tree. Epping Forest has got an awful lot of trees in it. This may not come as news to the sharper amongst our readers. If it didn’t have so many trees, we’d have to call it a field. But it’s a forest, with trees, and, of these trees, about 50,000 are classified as Veteran Trees. What’s a one of them? And how does a veteran tree differ from an ancient tree? Well, I’m very glad you asked me. An ancient tree is defined as one that is ceasing to grow – its annual rings are getting narrower, the poor old thing can’t support so many leaves, and its crown begins to die back. A veteran tree, on the

other hand, is one that has developed these same symptoms, but not because of its age. Rather, damage or outside forces have caused it to cease growing. An analogy would be a nice old gentleman who has reached maturity with good grace, as opposed to me, who has become embittered and irritable, not naturally, but through a lifetime spent supporting Tottenham. Most of Epping Forest’s veteran trees are pollarded, mainly beech, hornbeam and oak. What’s a pollard? Well, if you keep interrupting, I’m going to get very veteran indeed. Pollarding is the old practice of lopping trees at a height of about 2 metres, to harvest timber in such a way that the ensuing growth is out of the reach of grazing deer. Pollarding virtually ceased in 1878 when the City of London assumed the protection of the Forest. Hence the pollarded trees that we see have a very characteristic

Searching For Childcare Just Got Easier

amilies searching for childcare will have access to more information as well as advice and support, all at the click of a button, thanks to a new service which has been launched by Essex County Council. The online ‘find a childcare provider’ service has information on more than 2,600 early years and childcare providers, including pre-schools, nurseries, out of school provision and childminders. The facility [not service as that existed before] is the first of its kind in Essex and as well as helping parents to find the right childcare, also offers an important opportunity to childcare providers to promote and increase their business by being able to reach more people. The service, available at www.essex.gov.uk/fis, has details of the county’s 86 children’s centres which offer services to all families with a child under 5 years (valuable for both families and anyone working with families with young children) as well as the ability for people to;  search for childcare by location (i.e. postcode or town name), provider name, Ofsted num-

County Councilor Ray Gooding, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services said, “We know that young children can benefit hugely from accessing high quality, early learning and childcare provision. This new facility complements the existing Family Information Service telephone and email enquiry service and will help parents and carers to find suitable provision to the meet the needs of their child, and being online means the information is available 24/7. However, if parents are unable to find suitable childcare they can still telephone the Family Information Service on 0800 055 6874 where a specialist adviser will advise on the options available and help them to find suitable childcare.”

Volunteers improve access to Connaught Water

T

EF &CC Chairman Alderman Gordon Haines, who officially opened the Boardwalk is 3rd from the right

he City of London Corporation has completed improvement works to the muchloved local landmark, Connaught Water on Rangers Road near Chingford. Volunteers have been busy constructing two accessible angling platforms and a boardwalk across the lake. Aquatic planting by volunteers has significantly improved the habitat with the addition of species such as water mint, reeds, water lily and water forget-me-not. The new plants have been surrounded with temporary fencing to protect them from water fowl and dogs until they are established - after a year or so. The City of London Corporation’s dedicated Lakes and Ponds Task Force volunteers joined forces with the Scouts and Ranger Guides – who came from all over the UK - the Challenge Network, Youth Rehabilitation and the Epping Forest Centenary Trust over the summer and autumn to build the boardwalk. Volunteer Development Officer, Martin Whitfield, said: “Working with the young people was a fantastic experience; they were so enthusiastic. Those involved worked incredibly hard and they should feel very proud of themselves for what they have managed to achieve in such a short time.” This is the culmination of improvements at Con20

naught Water, which also include a new accessible path, more seating, car park resurfacing with five disabled spaces, and the introduction of a waymarked trail linking Connaught Water to the newly refurbished Butler’s Retreat café and the brand new Visitor Centre, The View. The works were undertaken by GC Tilhill to the designs of landscape architects, Chris Blandford Associates and funded by the Heritage Lottery funding as part of the City’s Branching Out project. Prior to the works, 205,000 visits were recorded at Connaught Water in 2010 and the site will be resurveyed in 2014. Gordon Haines, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Epping Forest Committee, who opened the boardwalk said: “The generous support from Heritage Lottery Fund, and the dedication of our wonderful team of volunteers, is enabling us to greatly improve the experience for visitors to Epping Forest. The boardwalk at Connaught Water provides a new opportunity to walk amongst the reeds and observe the colourful aquatic wildlife.” To get involved in volunteering in Epping Forest, visit: www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/eppingforestvolunteers See the film of the boardwalk construction visit: http://tinyurl.com/ap358j7

Take Care Of Your Teeth!

80% of the adult population will have gum disease or sensitive teeth at some point in their lives. It can start in your teens or in adulthood. Are you one of them?

M

ost individuals will develop a gum problem during their life, but around 1 in10 are prone to severe gum disease resulting in tooth loss. Gum disease often runs in families. Smokers are more susceptible and need more help. Stress may also exacerbate underlying problems. Furthermore certain general diseases such as diabetes and heart diseases tend to make an individual more susceptible to loosing there teeth and having bleeding gums.

How do I know if I have gum disease? Most commonly the gums will bleed on brushing. There may be bad breath (halitosis). In more advanced disease the teeth may become loose or painful. Frequently there is gum recession and sensitive teeth.

How to beat the disease... Prevention and control of bleeding gums and periodontal disease is important. Visiting a dentist or hygienist regularly is recommended as the only way. Hygienists work to remove the bacteria and plaque and advise you on the best technique customized to improve and keep away gum disease. A specialist periodontist has been specially trained to care for patients who have gum disease, they can produce healthy gums and bone around teeth fast and effectively. Help from a periodontist will be necessary in cases of:  Severe gum disease, persistent bleeding gums and

mobile (wobbly) teeth. periodontist can improve the problem quickly by root planing (cleaning the infected surface of a root). This is virtually painless and very effective.  The periodontist can re-shape your gums if there has been recession and they can achieve stability of your teeth. A periodontist will improve the chances of you keeping your teeth.  The

I need to find a specialist periodontist - How do I do this? At Longwood House you can also arrange a consultation directly with a periodontist who is a Registered Specialist with the General Dental Council. Campaign launched to recruit short-break carers

E

ssex County Council is launching a campaign to recruit people who can offer short breaks for children with physical or learning disabilities. Short-break carers provide regular overnight breaks, or day care (after school, at weekends, or in the school holidays) for children aged from birth to 18 with disabilities. This allows parents to recharge their batteries or to concentrate their attention on other children in the family, while their child makes new friendships and enjoys new activities outside of their family circle. Short-break carers come from all walks of life. Carers can be working, unemployed or retired, single, or with a partner and may or may not have children of their own. No specific qualifications are necessary although a willingness to undertake training is required and some experience or understanding of disabilities is helpful. To become a short-break carer you will need to undertake an assessment which will include safeguarding checks. You will also need to be in good health. Following approval, short-break carers are carefully matched with a child. In cases where the child needs assistance with personal care or medication, advice and training will be provided. All Essex County Council short-break carers receive an hourly or overnight fee.

Councillor Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services said: “If you could provide a positive and enjoyable experience for a disabled child, are reliable, flexible and patient, joining our network of short-break carers could be the ideal way for you to make a difference.”

For more information on short breaks call on 0800 801 530 or visit www.essex.gov.uk/shortbreaks

Finding Love & Inspiration?

I

n 1983 at the age of 28, my life collapsed – marriage, career – the lot! A synchronistic turn of events, led me to move to London, initially living in the lounge of a friend’s flat. Returning ‘home’ one night I leafed through a London ‘What’s on’ publication. An advert inviting me to ’Change your thoughts - change your life create your tomorrow today’ fascinated me. Questioning, but at the same time open-minded at this ‘new idea’, I ventured along, & met the woman who was to become my teacher for the next 5 years. So how does it work dear reader? You may also be facing uncertainty in your career, relationship, or finances. The good news is that you too can turn your life around within weeks by applying the ideas as shared by my teacher. Through applying these principles I met my wonderful 2nd husband. We were married in Hawaii & returned to live locally. How wonderfully empowering it is for us to know we have, within us, the ability to transform our lives! I have been blessed to work with & study with some of the most pioneering thinkers in the world – Nicholas Hagger MA, owner of 3 local private schools, & Nona Coxhead who trained in America with the same teacher as Louise L Hay. In 1995 I trained as an Angel Therapy Practitioner with Dr Doreen Virtue, then studied with Dr John Demartini from the best selling film ‘The Secret’. I have found that the depth of much of this teaching comes from the UK. Many of the ideas come from Judge Thomas Troward (UK) who spent half his life in India & thus providing a wonderful synthesis of the best of Western & Eastern principles. I started the Thomas Troward Society in the 1980’s & produced 8 ‘Golden Heart’ International Award winning publications, entitled ‘New Light on Thomas Troward’. Between 1996 – 2009 I worked in International Executive Search. If you have been made redundant, or are seeking to change to more ‘holistic types’ of work phone me for an appointment. I can help you. On Sunday 17th February Anita Moses & l are running an ‘Angels, Hearts & Gifts Day’ in Wanstead. As it’s close to Valentine’s Day the theme will be love & romance. There will be a raffle where all the proceeds will go to

Anita is a Rejuvanessence Practitioner and offers a wonderful holistic facial massage sometimes known as"The Angel's Touch" www.anitamoses.com and donates £5 from each full session to Haven House. I am currently offering consultations to help you find that special someone. I also run ‘Angels, Goddess, & Life’ transformation events locally. Following my second redundancy in 2009, I sat in a deck chair in Green Park considering what I was passionate about. I concluded that I would love to track down beautiful feminine clothes in velvets & silks, at reasonable prices, to help women feel good about themselves. Having been decked in the shades of greys of the city, the part of me that loved colour & soft textures was shrieking to get out! Do come along & try on a beautiful robe or silk scarf on Sunday 17th February at our ‘Angels, Hearts & Gifts’ fayre. Heather Andrews-Dobbs Heather.Andrews.Dobbs@gmail.com 07773 127 178

Film Favourites from All Star Films

All Star Films make professional corporate films: www.allstarfilms.com by Thom Goddard

A

FILM REVIEW

new year begins with a bang. Or a gong. The BAFTA and Academy Awards will reward the best films, actors and technicians with little statues. This year will be interesting as there are no clear favourites to win in any of the categories. The only certainty is none of the films at the cinema will win ‘Best Film’ but they are worth watching. Enjoy! Released: 1st January - The Impossible Telling the complete story of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed over 250,000 people would be impossible. So this film concentrates on the true story of a British couple, played by Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, who were separated when the wave hit their resort. While you can engage with the narrative this is an average film with one sensational ten minute sequence of when the wave hits. 11th January - Les Misérables Oscar award-winning director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) has created a visually impressive adaptation of Cameron Mackintosh’s musical. The plot centres on Jean Valjean, played enthrallingly by Hugh Jackman, a French peasant searching for redemption after 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving family. But it’s not strictly a musical and simple lines being continually sung becomes infuriating. 1st February - Flight Denzel Washington stars as Captain Whip Whitaker, a hard-drinking, drugaddicted party boy. Who is also an airline pilot. One day his quick thinking saves hundreds of people during a plane crash and he becomes an overnight hero. However, this brings his crazy lifestyle to the surface. This is not an action film but an engaging character study and the more Capt. Whitaker’s life falls apart, the more you’ll be rooting for him. 22nd February - Cloud Atlas An ‘unfilmable’ book makes it to the big screen. There are 6 different timelines from a runaway slave in 1800 to a post apocalyptic battle between the last humans on Earth. This is not confusing though as instead of a plot the narrative follows from theme to theme. There is a stellar cast and fabulous special effects but that is not crucial as it is the story- telling that makes this movie epic. DVDs to please There are some good films released but television fans are really in for a treat. Dredd (14th Jan on DVD rrp: £11.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £18.99) is an ultra-violent action film and Looper (28th Jan DVD rrp: £11.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £18.99) is a stunning sci-fi thriller. Re- live your favourite racing in Formula One Season 2012 (7th Jan on DVD rrp: £17.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £24.99). Merlin - Complete Series 5 (21st Jan on DVD rrp: £24.99 and Blu- Ray rrp: £29.99) will be loved by the whole family and Great British Railway Journeys: Series 3 (21st Jan on DVD rrp: £29.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £39.99) to relax. Enjoy! 36
