Editors letter

W

elcome to the November and December edition of The Chingford Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory.

The year is heading inexorably towards Christmas, and all that that entails. For me, it generally entails getting cards too late from friends that I’d forgotten, sending cards to people who seem to have forgotten me, receiving embarrassing socks, dispensing embarrassing stuff that I saw online to embarrassed people, socialising awkwardly with awkward people at awkward dos, watching another Poinsettia die on the dinner table, wondering what to do with all that turkey when everyone I know, including me, is vegetarian, rashly resolving to make no rash resolutions, pretending to enjoy a rom-com from 1994 on Channel 4, and, of course, pretending to like turkey, Poinsettias and embarrassing socks.

But I like all that other stuff about midwinter and rebirth. Yule logs and holly and that. I like it when the snowdrops pop their little heads out to see if it’s OK to flower. I like walking in the forest when a listless lingering mist gets caught on the bare branches of the beech trees. And I really like it when someone wishes you a Happy New Year and you know that they mean it.

So Seasonal Greetings to one and all, and all the very best for 2014.

Thaxted or Cakes, Cathedrals and Cutlery

wilight spread across the fields. In the nearby church, bells rang. Tess stepped out of the thatched cottage, then flinched just slightly as a bat flitted across her unlit path to swoop upwards and dance around one of the gargoyles that knelt beneath the spire of the church. Her heart went pitter-pat, pitter-pat, and ached just a little bit.

Tess was to meet her lover down the lane. Lovely tall, handsome, clever, urbane Alec. And her heart went pitter-pat again at the thought.

Treading cautiously lest her parents hear her leave, she eased open the creaking kissing gate and slipped through the gap and out onto the open fields. On the horizon, against the sunlit sky, stood the windmill, its sails static in the stagnant evening air. The hedge beside her was rich with scented cow parsley and hawthorn, the white blossom seeming to glow in the gloom. There was a sudden scuttling, scurrying sort of a sound, and the girl jumped at the noise. A stoat, or possibly a dormouse. She checked her wicker basket for a moment, in case her sudden jolt had disturbed its contents, but the cider and the cakes were safe.

From somewhere overhead there came a thunderous roar and Tess looked up to the sky. Something huge and metallic was moving across the heavens. It was the Easyjet flight from Stansted to Alicante.

Do you get it? It’s not some Victorian heroine in Dorset. It’s 21st century Essex. She’s called Tess, I’ll grant you. Nothing wrong with that. Nice name. But she doesn’t work in a dairy. She works for a flooring company in Braintree. And this is Thaxted, not Casterbridge, thank you very much. And what I’m trying to say, in rather a roundabout way, is that this lovely town makes a good day out. (Tess, ironically, is immune to its charms and longs for a flat of her own, in Braintree if at all possible.)

Thaxted is named in the Domesday Book as Tachesteda, which means the place where you get thatching. It was once a top place for the manufacture of cutlery, until Sheffield took over in the 16th century. And it’s a beautiful place today– just ask Tess from the flooring people – with actual tourist attractions and stuff.

The Guildhall dominates the main street, built by the Guild of Cutlers who used the open ground floor for meetings. It’s been restored over the years and now holds regular exhibitions.

was built between 1340 and 1510. It has a 180 foot soaring spire with flying buttresses, and its elevated location has earned it the nickname of Essex’s Cathedral.

A picture postcard country lane leads between almshouses to John Webb’s Windmill of 1804. At the moment, it’s been somewhat emasculated since it lost a sail last year, leaving it standing like a stout pepper pot looking over the Essex countryside. If Don Quixote were alive today and living in Essex, he’d fancy his chances against this one. It ceased production in 1910.

Of the almshouses that line the lane, the lower thatched building was the Priest’s House before it became an almshouse. The building opposite was built

in the early 1700s and used to be home to 16 aged residents. We seem to have gone a bit soft these days, though, as a mere three couples occupy the buildings.

Gustav Holst lived in the town, and the original hymn tune from Jupiter, which became ‘I vow to thee, my country’, was called ‘Thaxted’.

All of Thaxted has about it a picture postcard quality.

The curving dipping main street runs between pastelwashed cottages down to the main square, and cobbled alleys wind back up to the church and the lane where we began. But we must modestly look away - I think that young Tess has met up with her swain.

BOOK REVIEW: 'A Better World is Possible’

H

RH the Prince of Wales is passionate about environmental sustainability, growing and eating organically and avoiding contributing to an already polluted planet.

Increasing toxicity of the air, seas and soil will become the most important issue of our time.

Despite our proximity to Epping Forest, Chingford has high levels of pollution due to the proximity of the incineration plant at Edmonton.

Over the August Bank Holiday, London recorded very high levels of air pollution. Therefore, this book is one that should be read by everyone, not just young people in their sixth form year.

Bruce Nixon worked as a transformational advisor to many large international corporations and he is now a campaigner and consultant on environmental issues. He is the author of ‘New Approaches to Management Development’ (1981) ‘Global Forces: A Guide for Enlightened Leaders – what companies and individual can do’ (2000) ‘Making a Difference – Strategies and Tools for Transforming Your Organisation’ (2001) and ‘Living System: Making Sense of Sustainability’ (2006) and numerous articles. In his ground-breaking book ‘A Better World is Possible’ he describes the enormous problems that are slowly engulfing everyone on the planet and explains what we need to do to save the health of future generations. I needed to read this book very slowly because there was a great deal of new information that I needed to

digest in order to fully understand the quest that the writer has embarked upon. Affluent countries are using more than their share of natural resources and causing pollution for future generations to try to solve. Whilst I was reading, I was reminded of the beauty of the birds and flowers, the creativity of nature and the great expanse and variety that planet Earth supports, which will certainly be in jeopardy if we continue to consume at the present rate.

I see our time as the peak of consumption, and that in times to come, we will look back and see our behaviour as extremely stupid! How often have we heard it said ‘this book changed my life’? I can say with conviction that this book has the capacity to change lives and to change the lives of our descendants if we decide to create a cleaner, more efficient and healthier planet! I would recommend the book to business owners and managers, those interested in ecology and politics and to consumers, especially in Western nations.

Haven House: building a future for local children and families

onstruction of a new annexe to the Woodford Green hospice is now underway, which will mean improved services and support for local life-limited children and their families.

Thanks to a grant of £464,000 from Department of Health (DoH) and following planning approval from Waltham Forest Council, the hospice has been able to start work on an annexe to its current building, the historic White House in Mallinson Park.

The building will create additional space, and will enable Haven House to provide a broader range of services to those who currently use the hospice, as well as allowing support for increased numbers of local lifelimited and life-threatened children.

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of the hospice, explains; ‘We are so pleased to see the diggers moving in and starting the build. He continues; ‘Its been a nailbiting process; securing funding and gaining planning approval, but this annexe will make such a difference to the lives of local life-limited children and families, so it will all have been worth it in the end.’

Plans for the new building will include: New consultation facilities for clinicians (from Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital for example) to meet with local life-limited and life-threatened children closer to where they live  Increased meeting space for training and support for parents  A dedicated room for music and other therapy work (at present the hospice uses a sensory room for music therapy and only one thing can happen at any one time) The design and authority negotiations have been carried out by the architects at Clear Design, while the building work is being undertaken by Mason Construction. Both are local companies, based in Loughton, Essex and both have significantly reduced the costs normally associated with this kind of project.

However despite these reduced costs, it is likely that the funds available from DoH will be exceeded. Therefore Haven House will be looking to secure additional monies from its fundraising activities.

Community Events and What’s On HIGHAMS PARK COMMUNITY PLAN Launch Event - Saturday 16 November, 12.30 – 4.30pm.

All Saints Church Hall, Church Avenue, Highams Park. Free refreshments available for all the family. An exciting opportunity for those who live and work in Highams Park to define the future of the area.

Highams Park is one of a limited number of areas selected by the Government to pilot the creation of a Community Plan (“the Plan”). This innovative policy will give the Highams Park community a voice in defining the future of the area and the intention is that residents, businesses, shops, schools, health care providers and councillors (and other contributors) will work together in creating the Plan.

A Community Plan Initiation Group has been set up by the Highams Park Forum to start the ball rolling. The Initiation Group will facilitate the establishment of a committee of interested and enthusiastic local people to steer the Plan into reality. Leaflets will be shortly distributed in and around the Highams Park area promoting an informal, drop in Launch Event, where people can learn more about what the Plan could deliver. Visitors will also be able to swap ideas and register their interest in being involved.

THE WOODFORD SINGERS DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING? YOU’LL BE ABLE TO – AND JOIN IN – AT THE WOODFORD SINGERS’ LES MISERABLES WORKSHOP! The Woodford Singers will be holding a Les Misrables open workshop for anyone who has ever wanted to have a go at singing some of the famous

songs from Les Misrables, but have never had the chance – or the nerve – to do it before.

Taking place from 10.30am4.30pm on Saturday 16th November, the workshop will be held at the Derby Road Methodist Church, South Woodford, E18 2PU. Men and women are welcome. The day will finish off with a sing through in front of friends and family at 5pm. The workshop will include favourites such as ‘I Dreamed a Dream’, ‘Castle on a Cloud’, ‘On My Own’, ‘Empty chairs at Empty Tables’, ‘Bring Him Home’, ‘Master of the House and ‘Do you Hear the People Sing?

Tickets cost £15, which includes tea and coffee, musical tuition and all music which can be kept. Men, women and accompanied children are all welcome. Kath Savage, Musical Director of the Woodford Singers said “It doesn’t matter if you’ve sung before or can’t read music – we’ll prepare notes, harmonies and give you top tips for singing musical theatre. Above all, the day will be about singing in a relaxed and friendly environment and having fun”.
