elcome to the March and April edition of The Chingford Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory.

Spring, so they say, is in the air. It’s a bit of a cliché, but it has a certain resonance, because, each year, there always seems to come a special morning when you go outside and the whole of the world seems warmer and fresher and full of anticipation and hope. More often than not, this is because I’ve had too much coffee, and the feeling subsides as quickly as it arose.

I’m lucky in my job, working as I do for Epping Forest, as I see spring arrive from my workplace. I worked there when autumn came and coloured our forest golden brown. And I worked there too when winter stole the leaves away. And now I get to watch as the canopy of trees on the skyline seems to get gradually

drizzled with colour and life, first in buds that look like a haze in the distance, then in increasingly glowing shades of light green as the leaves unfurl. I’ve had various jobs over the years, but mainly had views of other factories, so I’m sure you don’t mind if I go on a bit. It’s just that spring is, well, sort of in the air. Enjoy it while you can.

Dartmoor Or Huts, hounds and headless horsemen

ould you Adam and Eve it? The sun was out, it was dry and bright, and the whole landscape basked in a late summery glow, verdant and fertile, welcoming and warm. I just can’t catch a break these days, can I? As we crossed the boundary and entered the National Park, Dartmoor seemed to have lured us in with false pretences.

Amongst those dim and unreliable memories of my youth, two in particular seemed at odds with this annoyingly bright scene. Firstly, I read The Hound of the Baskervilles as a child, and there were absolutely no hounds charging over the mire to maul our hatchback. Secondly, we’d driven round Dartmoor on a family holiday back in the (literal) mists of time, and from that trip I’d retained an image of gushing brooks flooding under packhorse bridges, frothing

and foaming down from hillsides hidden from view, while ghostly outlines of gruesome rock arched upwards in the fog in grotesque imitation of ghoulish monsters. We were heading for Devon to recapture that childish terror. And, would you Adam and Eve it? The sun was out, etc etc. Dry. Warm. Verdant.

Yuk. Not to be deterred by the rare English sunshine, we stayed on like troopers, and the next day duly dawned duly dull. Mist. Rain. Mizzle. We English have a gazillion words for bad weather, in the way that eskimos have for snow.

Dartmoor covers 370 square miles, so it’s about 20 miles across. At its fringes lie Devonshire towns, that edge the moor as though their very houses fear to venture further up the road. Each is like a refuge, for there are very few shops or conveniences once

you’re out on the moors. In fact, Dartmoor harbours further darkness at its heart in the prison at Princetown, a grim, oppressive place, in a bleak, oppressive setting.

The mast above the prison can be seen for miles around and it seems to send out a warning to us all to behave, or else.

You feel all these presences on Dartmoor. Hounds, convicts, nature’s darker side. But you also find traces of our antecedents in these stark and unwelcoming expanses, where standing stones in lines or in rings, or in solitary grandeur, hut circles and menhirs tell of earlier settlement. For the weather was warmer (yuk) when Bronze Age man dwelt here, and Dartmoor was a shady forest. In about 1000BC, the weather worsened (hooray) and the early inhabitants abandoned Dartmoor.

Of course, pixies live on Dartmoor these days.

You’d have to be the utmost sceptic not to believe that. And there are hounds, ghosts, and a scattering of headless horsemen. Dartmoor lends itself to superstition, and the pixies have capitalised on this by setting up a shop beside the B3212. They sell pixie stuff (of course) at rather human prices. The headless horsemen don’t have a shop as such, as they scorn publicity, preferring to swoop along the valleys, howling in the mist. Myself, I think that headless horsemen swoop and howl because they can’t watch TV or do sudokus anymore.

Dartmoor has a unique scenery. Outcrops of granite explode out of the grassy summits of the slopes in jagged shapes known as Tors, each with a mystical name, and some of the tors have outcrops coming out of the outcrops, like Bowerman’s Nose.

There is wonderful walking on easy paths, although a great swathe of the northern part has been

used by the military since Napoleonic times, and these are seldom accessible to walkers, unless you want to become a headless horseman. A modest walk of four miles can easily encompass a village in a combe, a brook running through a copse, open expanses of moorland, views across to the brooding prison, and a tor or two. We even saw a hound on one of our walks, although my wife, who has expert canine knowledge, told me it was actually a sausagedog.

Dartmoor ponies graze in rather too friendly fashion by car parks, waiting either for leftover picnic or their headless owner. They are a hardy breed, and were formerly used in the tin-mines, relics of which litter the landscape in pools and tramways, strangely out of place running across the open moor.

As for my holiday, you’ll be glad to hear that it rained and rained for the best part of a fortnight after our arrival, and we were able to drive back home suitably terrified, oppressed, despondent and refreshed. You can’t beat a summer holiday in good ol’ Blighty.

This Edition: James Alexandrou

n the stock market the smart person knows when to buy into a company. However, the real trick is knowing when to leave. Chingford resident James Alexandrou has appeared in many award winning plays and documentaries but is best known for the 10 years he spent in BBC One’s Eastenders. His greatest moment may have been when out with the Eastenders cast: “That’s when the realisation hit me. The blind arrogance... was seen as typical of soap actors (it’s not by the way). It was then I realised that I was associated with this. It was then I realised I was also regarded like this. It was then I realised I wanted to leave the show”1.

James Alekos Alexandrou was born on 12th April 1985 in Islington. At the age of eight the family moved to Chingford and James attended the Church of England Infants school. To keep him occupied after school his mother enrolled James in Anna Scher Drama school. Here his fellow classmates included Natalie Cassidy, who James would go on to marry on the television. Otherwise James had a regular childhood and excelled at swimming holding the London under-12 records for freestyle and backstroke. One day at the C of E school, James was called into the Head Teacher’s office and, seeing his mum in tears, he thought he was in trouble. But it was something that was to change his life - he’d just won the part of Martin Fowler on the BBC soap opera ‘Eastenders’.

In 1996 James moved to Chingford Foundation School but missed the first day as that was when he started filming. He missed some classes but achieved his GCSEs as he called the school “very supportive”2.

On screen it was slightly different, as Martin Fowler ‘achieved’ joining a gang, burglary, drug addiction, car theft, blackmail, drug dealing and vandalism. But James found Martin a role model of what not to do in life.

James’ revelation came after 9 years in Eastenders and he announced he was leaving. His final show, broadcast on 2nd February 2007, left the door open for James to return. However, he saw instant stage success with praise for his work with the British Shakespeare Company in ‘Henry V’ and ‘As You Like It’. He also turned down the chance to replace Daniel Radcliffe in the West End hit ‘Equus’.

The stage work continues to bring success as James played Romeo at the Globe Theatre on the Southbank and starred in ‘DNA’ from the National Theatre. Having made the successful move away from Eastenders, would he ever go back: “I would love to come back one day - that's if EastEnders would have me"3. So do keep a look out for any famous people you meet in the Mount or have seen on the Green!

South Chingford Community Library REGULAR INTEREST GROUPS On Wednesdays, we have the Job Club, supported by a grant from Waltham Forest Council, to fund volunteer recruitment and training.

Members of the Job Club are allowed free access to the internet, and also printing of CVs at no charge. The club is run in partnership with the Government’s JobCentre Plus scheme. East Tenders, a local organisation professionally qualified to give advice on employment and job seeking, is also providing support.

Also meeting on Wednesdays is the “Little Stars” Mother and Toddler Group.

Thursdays sees the regular meeting of Jean Cobb’s “Knit and Natter” club, which is supported by the new HobbyCraft store in Chingford. If you are interested in starting a new group based on your own special interest, then we are keen to hear from you.

WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS! In order to be able extend our opening hours, we need more volunteers, able to devote several hours on a monthly or weekly basis to the various tasks associated with running a community library. Volunteering is very rewarding (except financially!). If you are interested, come in and see us, or download an application form from the website.

WHERE TO RETURN LIBRARY BOOKS AND WHERE TO USE YOUR LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP CARDS People frequently wish to use a Waltham Forest Library membership card to borrow our books, or try to return a Waltham Forest library book, to us. We are an independent, community library, totally separate from the council library system, and we issue our own membership cards, which can be used to borrow books from us (and only from us).

So please remember to return (by the due date) your Waltham Forest library books to any Waltham Forest Library, and your SCCL library books to us. City Corporation thanks Epping Forest volunteers They clock up a Herculean 61,414 hours since 2010

he City of London Corporation, which owns Epping Forest, is celebrating the achievements of the 242 volunteers who have helped manage the ancient woodland since 2010.

The volunteers were recognised at an awards ceremony at Butler’s Retreat, Chingford on Thursday 31 January.

Volunteers were given a tour of new visitor centre, ‘The View’ at a special late opening, followed by a party at the nearby Butler’s Retreat cafe, where they dined on a Tudor-themed buffet.

In the last three years the volunteers have clocked up an amazing 61,414 hours – equivalent to 8,773 days of work or 1,253 full working weeks.

Luke O’Keefe [pictured] – who is studying for a level 3 diploma in Horticulture at Capel Manor College - received a ‘Gold’ award for volunteering over 600 hours in just one year, alongside City Corporation green keepers at Chingford Golf Course.

Veteran volunteer Stan Shepherd, 92, of Chingford was awarded a ‘gold’ medal and special mention for sharing his expertise in Tudor timber framing with visitors to Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge.

Stan first visited the Lodge as a boy in 1928 and he is an expert in its Tudor period-structure and joinery. The Lodge was built in 1543 as a grandstand from which King Henry VIII could view the Royal hunt - and participate by shooting the deer with crossbows from the upper floors.

Alderman Gordon Haines, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Epping Forest Committee, said: “Volunteers make an exceptional contribution to the care and management of Epping Forest. They help shape the Forest’s future and have always played a major role in its past.

The team enables us to greatly improve the experience for visitors to Epping Forest. A brilliant example is the new boardwalk at Connaught Water which now provides an opportunity to walk amongst the reeds and observe the colourful aquatic wildlife.

As part of our ‘Branching Out’ project we’re recruiting more volunteers across the whole Forest. If you are 16 to 80 years old and want to get involved, we want to hear from you.”

Haven House Children’s Hospice - 10th birthday

A

letter from actor Ray Winstone, a patron of Haven House Children’s Hospice, which works with a number of children and families in Waltham Forest and West Essex.

This year, Haven House Children’s Hospice is celebrating an important milestone – 10 years providing care for seriously ill children and their families in Waltham Forest and West Essex.

As a patron of Haven House (my local children’s hospice), I am able to see first-hand the great work that the hospice does. It provides specialist nursing care for children with life-limiting illnesses and those who are coming to the end of their lives.

This may sound like a sad place, but it’s not. It’s a light, bright environment, set in beautiful woodland, far removed from what you might expect.

It’s not just children who are cared for by Haven House; parents and siblings also get loads of support.

Parents are given a break from the strains of looking after a sick child, as well as a place where they can talk to staff and other parents, who are going through similar things.

Siblings also get the help they need; Haven House’s Buddies scheme provides fun stuff and a break for those children living with a brother or sister who is unwell.

There are lots of ways that Waltham Forest and West Essex residents and local business can get involved in the 10th birthday celebrations; including volunteering and fundraising. I know that you will join me in wishing Haven House a very happy 10th birthday and the best of luck for the next 10 years.

fter a great party you have to contend with the inevitable hangover.

During the last few months, the season leading up to the BAFTA and Academy Awards, some of the best films of 2013 have hit the big screen. Now we see the movies that didn’t quite make the grade and that aren’t terrible but are released after award season for a reason. Enjoy!

Released: 1st March - Broken City The Mayor of New York (Russell Crowe) has the city in his back pocket but suspects his wife (Catherine Zeta Jones) may be cheating on him. So he hires a private detective (Mark Wahlberg), an ex-cop fired because of a shooting incident, to follow his wife. However, the P.I. seeks revenge as well as redemption.

While the cast and plot are strong, the cinematography is clunky. Could have been so much more.

27th March - G.I Joe: Retaliation Although this is the point of sequels never has one had so much more, more, more and (can you guess?) more. The G.I. Joes return with bigger muscles and bigger guns to fight their mortal enemy ‘Cobra’. However, this time they are also forced to contend with threats from within the US government that jeopardise their very existence. If that sounds exciting then you will love this film. If you think it sounds like garbage you won’t be wrong either.

12th April - The Place Beyond The Pines Ryan Gosling plays a mysterious motorcycle racer who is desperately trying to connect with his lover and new born son. In an attempt to provide for his new family, he commits a series of bank robberies aided by his superior riding ability.

This puts him on a collision course with an ambitious cop, a brooding Bradley Cooper, who is looking to quickly move up the ranks in a police department.

This looks gorgeous and delivers.

26th April - The Look of Love This is a fictional account of the hedonistic lifestyle of Paul Raymond, the man dubbed the ‘King of Soho’. Michael Winterbottom’s impressive film is a stylish, glamorous and ultimately desperately sad real-life story. It delves brilliantly into the empire of gentlemen’s clubs, real estate deals and erotic magazines that brought Raymond great wealth but a personal life that featured failed marriages, troubled children and great tragedy. While the story is fascinating, Steve Coogan flails as Raymond and this would have been better as a documentary.

DVDs to please Quite simply the best films of 2013 are released on DVD and Blu-Ray so fans are in for a treat. We’re looking forward to Storytelling during the week of World Book Day 2013 with Chingford CoE pupils, so this seems a perfect time to revisit The History of a Village School by the late and much loved Barbara Ray. When Barbara was first teaching at the school she found in the depths of a classroom cupboard the Centenary Souvenir of the school, which had been produced in 1956, and this very readable history is a terrific record of the school, the pupils and teachers, and its place in Chingford over the years. The book is complimented by early drawings from the author’s much-published illustrator- daughter, Jane Ray, and is an absolute snip at £5!

So, Barbara being a mum and a teacher (amongst other talents!) that tied Mothering Sunday and World Book Day up nicely, so I decided to present a special offer on her terrific book Chingford Past. £7.95 for the month of March (usual price £15.95) It’s a little out of our area, but I must just mention Grand Commuters by Lynn Haseldine Jones, which has been published by the Loughton and District Historical Society. Very little has been written about Buckhurst Hill for the best part of 50 years, and this title brings together articles written about ‘the families who effectively ran Buckhurst Hill’ from 1860-1940. Which isn’t as scary as it sounds! £4.50 "The challenge of living with Parkinson's is in becoming an expert about yourself". Terry Rummins was a psychologist, and retired from the job she loved as a result of her worsening Parkinson's. Terry describes her account as "a candid story, told with humour and containing a positive message of those recently diagnosed".

What's rather unusual is that Terry has published the book in two formats - one as a regular book (£7.99), the other as a full colour, 40 page graphic strip (£8.99) which vividly, literally, illustrates the effect of this disorder.

ROTARY GIVES ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY TO WALTHAM FOREST MUSICIAN FUNDRAISER The Rotary Club invites 16year old Highams Park charity fund-raiser, Danielle Mac, to perform a violin solo at Rotary Youth Makes Music 2013. This music event will take place on Monday March 18 from 7 PM at the Royal Festival Hall. It is organised by Rotary as a biannual and multi-genre concert for young talented musicians from across Greater London, giving music groups, choirs and soloists an opportunity to display their talents at a prestigious venue. THE WOODFORD SINGERS AND THE WOODFORD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TO PERFORM PERGOLESI’S STABAT MATER A performance of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater by The Woodford Singers and the Woodford Symphony Orchestra will be one of the highlights in a concert taking place at 7.30pm on Saturday 23 March at Barnardo’s Church in Barkingside (Tanners Lane, IG6 1QG).

The WSO will also perform Mozart’s Clemenza Di Tito and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.
