elcome to the September/October edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park. I really only join things in order that I might leave them again, in a hissy fit, or even in high dudgeon, whatever that is. I joined Inside magazine many years ago with the sole aim of one day walking out. I imagined my parting phrase to be along the lines of “You can keep your Insides,” but it sounded a bit visceral. I recently signed up to Twitter with similar intentions but got a bit sucked in by it all. I just wanted to be popular and found myself glancing every few minutes to see whether somebody somewhere liked me. To gauge my success I followed a social luminary. Whilst my tweets (including, by the way, a solution for world peace and the answer to the very meaning of life) picked up a measly two followers (my wife and a porn site by accident) the luminary’s picture of a kebab with the caption “Yum!” collected several million likes so that he was spoken of, briefly, as the future president of some republic. I’m leaving Twitter. You can see my legacy on @EppingPoet. No kebabs. Yuck!

have friends (I know that this sounds surprising) who take great delight in scorning anything popular. They even manage to pronounce the word with derision. Pop-ular. They also think themselves dead clever when they pretend to love anything that is frankly dreadful. They never watch Strictly but they adore Peruvian cinema (from the 1940s) (in black and white) (without subtitles).

But there is a reason for popularity, and, often, the most popular stuff is the best. Try reading anything other than Lorna Doone by R.D. Blackmore. They play more Mozart than Salieri at Glyndebourne. More people go to football than to extreme ironing. This has its drawbacks, though. It’s easier to get a ticket to the extreme ironing (yes, it does exist) than to see Tottenham, but less emotionally draining. And the most beautiful of beauty spots are also the busiest. Big Ben is more photographed than Cleethorpe Station Clock Tower.

So what has this to do with the Lake District? Surely its narrow roads are clogged in summer with over-large family cars, are they not? Well, yes, mostly. But, away from the honeypots of Grasmere, the steamer on Ullswater, the summit of Helvellyn, there is a large area of the Lakes where few people venture. It’s not all that popular. The reason? Well, it’s not that bad. It’s not Cleethorpes or Salieri. It’s just that it has no lake, no mountain of repute, and no twee village selling fudge and walking poles. It’s Dunnerdale, a swathe of moors, clad in bracken, linking hidden tarns, criss-crossed by narrow lanes and empty footpaths, through old farms beside waterfalls, over fields of bluebells beneath craggy knotted hillsides. It’s my contention that, were this scenery anywhere else, it would be feted to the (grey) skies. But, because Dunnerdale nestles between Scafell Pike and Coniston, it pales in comparison. Like when I write a limerick and compare it to Wordsworth. Its name, while strictly correct, is used less than the name Duddon Valley. The river Duddon itself flows along Dunnerdale, churning through gorges then tumbling past forests then streaming between moorland and fields. Duddon or Dunnerdale. Tomayto, tomarto. By a road that winds up one side of the valley, in a landscape strewn with boulders and rocky outcrops, the Scafell range reveals itself. The highest peaks in England, this massive mountain tends to hide itself from the eyes of the tourists in Grasmere or Ambleside. Yet it reveals its splendour in the Duddon Valley to those who make the effort. For it is not easy to get here. To approach from Central Lakeland involves vertiginous driving up and down the winding passes. To approach from the south means dipping out of the National Park for miles of circuitous roads. And there is no road in, either from east or west. Thus the reward of

the full view of Scafell Pike is well earned. There are none of the classic walking routes here, either. But, armed with a good map, visitors can invent their own walks, in the reasonable certainty that they might accomplish the walk in the company of none but their chosen companion and some hardy sheep. Much like me (in so many ways), Wordsworth was a fan of Duddon Valley. He wrote a book of sonnets that has been largely neglected ever since, the public more interested to learn of daffodils by Ullswater and what goes on on Waterloo Bridge. The neglect of these works reflects, in a way, the lack of attention that their subject gets and also the neglect of my limericks. At the start of the poems, the river rises in the mountains, “a Child of the clouds.” At the end of the sonnets, it “sinks into the deep.” The journey

is symbolic of our lives. And in this final sonnet, Wordsworth contemplates the lot of humans on this earth: While we, the brave, the mighty, and the wise, We Men, who in our morn of youth defied The elements, must vanish;--be it so! Couldn’t have put it better myself. Instead, here’s a limerick. It’s almost as good as Wordsworth. There once was a far distant valley Whose stream could make man’s spirits rally. It reaches the sea At nearby Kirkby, A somewhat unfitting finale. Boom. Take that William. Stick to the daffs in future mate.

found out that I had lost my baby just before Christmas. There are no words to describe the utter despair I felt’. Losing your much longed for baby late in pregnancy or soon after birth is the most awful trauma any parent can experience. A whole future is taken away from that family. Sadly this happens only too often. Currently 15 babies a day die in the weeks before or just after birth. Sands aims to care for those families with practical and emotional support for as long as they need it. Sands is currently working with your local children’s hospice and are looking to find volunteers to help them set up a new Sands Group in the Woodford area. We need people prepared to become part of a Committee, including a Chair, Treasurer and Secretary and Befrienders. The Chair helps the committee work together as a team, following the aims of Sands and ensuring that the Group works within the Sands Group Constitution. The Treasurer role would be especially suitable to anyone with financial acumen as well as an interest or empathy with Sands’ work. Befrienders are also needed to provide support to anyone affected by the death of a baby over the phone and in person at group meetings. The new befrienders must successfully complete Sands’ befriender training, and a minimum of two years

must have passed since their baby died. Sands support groups are run on a voluntary basis by people many of whom have themselves experienced the death of a baby. However not all Committee members have to be bereaved parents. As long as you have an empathy and interest in our work we would urge you to get involved. Rose Abrehart East Network Coordinator said: “I hope that there are people in and around Woodford who will consider helping to set up a Group in the area so we can look to provide support to bereaved parents and their families at a devastating time for them. Currently there is little support in the area in and around Woodford for these parents and it is very much needed. PENSIONS JARGON – BUSTED No one should be deterred from planning for their retirement by the jargon used in the pension industry. Happily, we are well versed in turning complex financial terms into plain English. Here we unravel a couple of terms that you may have come across and be unclear about. ANNUITIES When you retire, you can choose to take some or all of your pension pot as an annuity, an insurance product that provides a guaranteed income for life. One of the benefits that annuities provide is security. Unlike other retirement income products, and with the exception of investment-linked annuities, you aren’t exposed to stock market risk which could erode your income. On the downside, should you die early, the residual value of the annuity dies with you; there is usually no return of capital to your estate. DRAWDOWN With income drawdown, you take a retirement income direct from your pension pot while leaving the rest of the cash invested, providing an opportunity for future growth. There is no minimum amount for drawdown, so you could, for instance,

take your 25% tax-free lump sum and choose to leave the remaining funds invested. You can also move funds into drawdown in stages, known as partial or phased drawdown. The 25% tax-free amount doesn’t have to be taken at once on retirement – smaller amounts can be taken over time, each with 25% tax-free. Once in drawdown you can access funds as you need them. You could, for example, vary the amount you take each year, taking less if you wish to remain in a lower tax band, or more if you have plans to spend. After taking your 25% tax-free cash, your withdrawals will be subject to income tax and your drawdown income is added to any other income you receive in that tax year. It’s important to remember that taking large withdrawals may result in you paying tax at a higher rate. Our last show of the year is on 3rd November, and takes place in Mornington Hall, opposite Ss Peter and Paul Church, North Chingford. Entry is by member's ticket or 50p on the door.
