elcome to the July/August edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. Having failed to incorporate the talk of young people into my words (I sounded lame-oh, for shizzle and, like, not woke) I’ve decided instead to make the most of the parlance of my elders. To this end, I shall be saying “of course” before almost everything. This has the effect of causing great doubt in the listener, for, of course, one uses the phrase “of course” to imply that the listener is completely unaware of the wisdom one is about to impart. The listener is made to feel inferior, and this is always a plus. They’re, like, “Crikey, I didn’t know that and yet he said ‘of course’ so it must be well known.” Since my sole area of expertise is the somewhat esoteric field of bacteriology, this involves me using phrases such as “Of course, Campylobacter is catalase positive.” Tricky one to get into a conversation about bus times. But I’ll do my best. Of course.

GREY SEALS or Pigs, Pups and Pinky Promises STORY: DAVID YOUNG IMAGES: DAVID YOUNG
I
’m going to share a secret with you, but I’m in a bit of a dilemma. You see, part of what makes this place so special is that very few people know about it. So, whilst I love it when people read my words of wisdom, I implore you, on this occasion, to forget everything that you see in this article. Promise? Little pinky swear? Done. Your word is good enough for me. Now, as everybody knows, one of the largest mammals in the UK is Halichoerus grypus, or, as a literal translation, Hook-nosed Sea Pig. And, obviously, half of the world’s population of the Hook-nosed Sea Pig lives around the shores of our humble island.
Very few people have seen Hook-nosed Sea Pigs in the wild, firstly because they don’t know where to go, and, secondly, because the have never heard of them. Maybe you know them better under their more common name, the grey seal. I travelled to Norfolk recently, partly to see the

landscape but mainly in the hope of glimpsing a Hook-nosed Sea Pig. When I asked at Tourist Information where I might be likely to see the Sea Pig up close, a rather worried volunteer smiled politely and then seemed to phone someone when I turned my back. I guess he was new to the job because the shop sold loads of pictures of Sea Pigs in all manner of cute poses. Undeterred, I followed a path that wound its way from an old windmill over flat marshes criss-crossed with ditches until a ridge of sand dunes blocked the path between us and the sea. On cresting the ridge, I looked to the right to the shore and saw a lump of off-white blubber lolloping aimlessly on the sand. “Whooppee!” I cried. “A Sea Pig, or I’m no zoologist.” Several concerned walkers shuffled cautiously away from me. I looked to the left next and saw a line of mottled black at the tide level that stretched on forever. “Ah yes,” I explained to my patient wife. “That would be seaweed, you know. You get that. Near the sea. It’s a weed. Seaweed.” “Moron,” she said. (We enjoy marvellous banter, you see.) “That’s hundreds of grey seals, as normal humans call them. And stop saying ‘Whooppee’. You’re scaring the walkers. And the seals. And me.”

She was right. Not for the first time. The black line was several hundred seals lying together by the sea. We hadn’t paid for a boat to take us anywhere. We hadn’t hired a jeep. We’d walked across the Broads to this massive colony. At the time of year at which we visited, the seals were placid, not nursing young. They mate and give birth in late autumn and winter, and at such times they are carefully monitored and guarded, and have a more aggressive attitude. Humans, especially dog owners, are expected to exercise common sense in keeping a decent 10 metre distance throughout the year. Nevertheless, we got close enough in spring to watch them nudge and slither for space, to swim out to sea, or to pose artfully for tourist cameras.
The group is called a rookery and the young are called pups, the adults are cows and bulls, which seems to hint at some very confused zoologist plucking animal words out of thin air. Female seals come ashore to breed, and give birth a day or two later. The female weans the pup for three weeks and then mates with a male when he comes ashore later. The pups put on about 2kg per day but more than half will not survive their first year. I haven’t said where this happened with any precision. We can’t have our millions of readers disturbing the Sea Pigs. But just ask the chap at Information where to find the Sea Pigs. He’ll probably know by now.
