elcome to the May/June edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park. Our calendars are strewn with more and more reasons to bestow gifts, send cards, and dress up in silly masks (or is that just me?). This got me thinking on the whole culture of generosity. There’s a bloke who works at our offices sometimes. Let’s call him Eduardo (see, Jack, I said I’d keep your real name out of it). He generally brings us in some form of chocolate – bars, sweets, fingers – except near Easter when he usually brings wine gums (he’s a bit of a rebel, but only a very little bit). The problem with this strategy is that Eduardo (don’t worry, Jack) is condemned for eternity, like Sisyphus, to perform this task. For what if he should one day lapse? The office would be in uproar, each of us wondering how we had upset Eddy. And the moral of this tale is to abandon all generosity, whatever the season, and look solely after number one. Learn from the past, plan for the future, forget about the presents.

ONE IN THREE RETIREES WILL HAVE TO RELY ON THE STATE PENSION The Financial Conduct Authority recently carried out research 1 into the financial arrangements of just under 13,000 consumers in the UK. The results make for worrying reading. One of the findings that really stands out is that 31% of UK adults have no private pension provision, meaning they may have to rely solely on their state pension in retirement. The report highlights that many people find pensions very confusing and have no idea what they will have to live on when they retire. The full state pension is currently £159.55 per week but is only available to those who have a complete record of National Insurance contributions. The study also revealed that only 35% of 45 to 54-year-olds have given serious thought to how they will manage in retirement. The sad fact is that the longer people leave it before addressing their pension needs, the harder it is to achieve a reasonable level of income in retirement. PUTTING PENSIONS INTO PERSPECTIVE Pensions auto-enrolment has been a very positive

initiative that has resulted in far more young people paying into a pension than ever before. However, if workers only put in the minimum amount, this is unlikely to be enough to build up a sizeable pension. The self-employed often regard their business as their pension or say that they plan to keep working as long as possible. However, this is a high-risk strategy, as they might not find a buyer when they want to sell or may find that ill-health prevents them soldiering on. ENCYCLOPAEDIAS or Facts, Phones and Fat Bloke Down the Pub STORY: DAVID YOUNG
M
any, many years ago, when I was a slightly more considerate person, I used to meet my wife at the station. Looking back to that pre-mobile era, we often wonder how I knew which train she’d caught. Similarly, the other day, this bloke came up to me and asked me (yet again) the average rainfall in Quito in February. I quickly replied “100mm, roughly, just as it was the last time you asked, and who are you anyway?” Straight away, I wondered how I would have answered such a question before we started using that internet. (Then I wondered who this bloke was anyway, with his obsessive interest in Ecuadorian rain.)

ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA Well, if one casts one’s mind back to the last century, one may recall things called Encyclopaedias. These were (and again I beseech you to think back) books, big big books if they were encyclopaedic. And, if they were the Encyclopaedia Brittanica, the Daddy of them all, they were many many big big books. And you could find anything in them if you know where to look, including matters climatic in Ecuador. It just took, like, forever, as you probably had to go to a library (think back – these were public buildings with books in). These days, most of us carry a phone in our pockets which gives instant access to encyclopedic knowledge on a scale and at a speed that could never have been imagined forty years ago. We google everything. Without google (other search engines are available) we would have to revert to the books in the library. Now, computers fit in a trouser pocket. Not the giant computer that was the size of a planet in 1975 and which calculated payroll wrongly. Tiny things that know everything. A bit like an annoying bloke whom I know. But what was the first encyclopaedia, and why, and how did it get its odd name? The last question first, then, and we can blame copyists working on a Greek word in a Latin translation in 1470. I frequently blame these

people for much else besides, like roadworks on the M25, but this may be unreasonable. One day, they were copying and translating, as was their wont, when they accidentally forgot to put a space between the words for ‘general’ and ‘learning’. Typical. They’re always doing this sort of thing. But they threw up the wrongly conjoined word ‘encyclopaedia’ and so the new word was born. It is debatable when the first encyclopaedia appeared. One of the earliest, however, would be the Natural History of Pliny, written in 79AD. It sought to put together the learning in many fields, including architecture and medicine, and Pliny claimed to have amassed 20,000 facts. That’s a lot of pub quiz fodder. He famously died in the eruption of Vesuvius, and never finished the work. We’ll never know Fact 20,001. The 13th century saw a lot of encyclopaedias being compiled. In 1260, Vincent of Beauvais put together his Speculum Majus, which sounds like a torture instrument but actually translates as Big Mirror. It contained 3 million words. Loads of facts. It took him 29 years to assemble, but, as a Domenican Friar in the 13th century, he probably didn’t have online shopping to distract him. One of the first to use the familiar alphabetic organisation of entries was the 1704 Lexicon Technicum of John Harris. Similar to a dictionary, it expanded on the basic definition to give broad background information. The Encyclopaedia Britannica first appeared around 1770, in only 3 volumes, which rapidly expanded into the big collection that can still be found in libraries, if libraries can be found. When computers began to rule the world, Microsoft published a CD encyclopaedia called Encarta, which they discontinued in 2009. By then, it had 62,000 articles. It was losing out to its new online rival, Wikipedia, which, by the same time, had over 3 million articles. It’s getting on for 6 million now. It’s fairly easy to contribute to or edit an article, but this can lead to inaccuracy. Once, wayward youth scribbled nonsense in reference sections in libraries (oh, my crazy childhood). Now, likewise, the internet is susceptible to the odd bit of misinformation. Did you know, for example, that David Beckham was a Chinese goalkeeper in the 18th century? Or that famous actor, Gary Oldman, is in fact a giraffe? These were genuine entries in Wikipedia. These days the world thinks to itself “It’s on the May & June 2018

internet so it must be true.” This is the modern equivalent of the philosophy “Fat bloke down the pub said so.” This column is available online. So it must be true.

Act 2 Academy students off to run a summer school for more than 300 underprivileged Sri Lankan children
A
ct 2 Academy, a Highams Park based drama school, is taking 10 children from Highams Park and surrounding areas to Sri Lanka this summer to run a summer school for more than 300 underprivileged Sri Lankan children. 10 students aged between 15 and 17 are heading to Wattala, a suburb of Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital to volunteer with The Dust Project charity, teaching acting, singing and dancing to the children. Act 2 Academy Director Amanda Goodwin, who lives in Highams Park, said the opportunity arose after a conversation with someone from the United Nations and “snowballed” from there. Amanda added “I’m so proud of the young students who have signed up to do this and have worked so hard at fund raising.” The team have held several fund raising events to date including a ball last December, Christmas bag packing at Tesco in Highams Park and table top sales. Funds raised are to help children at the school. After surviving a Tsunami and civil wars, an estimated 900,000 Sri Lankan children aged 5 to 17 were displaced and orphaned and many were exploited for child labour. A large number of Sri Lankan children are never able to attend school. The school’s mission is to provide underprivileged children in this area with an education - leading to self-esteem, financial security and to help with the economic development of their community. Many of the Sri Lankan students have a love for creativity including dance, drama and singing. “The school will greatly benefit from the Act 2 Academy team visiting and sharing their skills with our students” said Karen Dey from The Dust Project. “We are really excited about our trip to Sri Lanka. It is a country none of us have ever visited before” said Bethany, Act 2 Academy Student age 15, “it will be a fantastic life experience for us and we are really looking forward to teaching the children acting, singing and dancing and having lots of fun with them. We are teaching 300 children over 3 weeks but we are all up for the challenge! We realise that these children don’t have the privileges many of us take for granted.” If you would like to support the team, especially if you love baking, then you can go and visit their 10

The Old Chingfordians Association A Brief History
C
hingford County High School, now Chingford Foundation School, was a grammar school for 11 to 18 year olds. The Old Chingfordians Association (OCA) was founded in 1945 by Mr. Burdett, Headmaster, as the first pupils left the school. This was to enable ex-pupils to keep in touch with the school and their former colleagues. A committee was formed with Mr. Burdett as the first Chairman and Miss Mathieson, Chairman of School Governors, its first President until 1968. Miss Mathieson, locally well known at the time, had been the prime mover of the school being built in Chingford. Annual membership was 2/6d (12.5p) for school leavers and 5/- (25p) thereafter. A wide range of activities was on offer to members covering social, cultural and sporting interests. There were classes in Ballroom dancing and regular dances with new members joining in all activities. Monday and Friday Club Nights were held and other clubs formed including drama which featured strongly. In 1947 the OCA Committee raised funds by carol singing and made presentations to 12 expupils serving in HM Forces at the end of the war. “The Link” magazine was started in July 1949 as a monthly Old Chingfordians news sheet and upgraded in July 1951 to a full scale magazine which continues today. Sporting activities included tennis, the OCA team beating both the school and Wellington Avenue Youth Club teams. Hockey and rugby teams also played regularly and the Annual School v. Old Chingfordians Cricket Match resulted in success for the Association in 1950. They also won the table tennis match against the Parents’ Association. When a school production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado was planned, Heather Goddin, an Old Chingfordian, was invited to take the part of Yum-yum, with Maths master Mr Harry Fisher singing the part of Nanki-Pooh. The first Annual Dinner Dance was held in February 1950 where Old Chingfordians had the opportunity to meet the new Headmaster, Mr Herring. The Association was greatly indebted to Maths teacher, Mr. P.J. Smith, a staunch supporter, and 18
a memorial fund was set up following his death in 1958. This was used to award an annual prize to an outstanding Mathematics pupil. In 1961 Biology teacher Peter Boyce introduced Morris dancing into the school. He had previously taught in Weston-Super-Mare and was a member of Mendip Morris Men. A number of younger pupils had been introduced to Morris dancing at primary school and became founder members of the school team, known as the Chingford Lads. The following year, Peter formed Chingford Morris Men, an adult team separate from the school although the Chingford Lads became a junior section and the two teams eventually merged. Chingford Morris Men continue to thrive today. However by the late 1970s, interest in the OCA dwindled, mainly due to the changing nature of the school which was to become a comprehensive for 14 to 19 year olds. The Association continued with a few reunions, notably in 1970 on the retirement of several long standing members of staff including Mr Herring and Miss King, English Teacher and Deputy Head, and in 1978 on the 40th anniversary of the school. For many years the school had strong links with Chingford Rugby Club, producing some of its finest rugby in the early 1980s. A celebratory match against the Old Chingfordians was organised by Mike Fulbrook, an ex-pupil and former President of Chingford RFC. More than 150 Old Chingfordians watched the game and enjoyed seeing former Schoolboy International Roger Penn in action again. In 1995, Neil Sjoberg, a former pupil of Chingford High School, along with his brother, bought and built Epping Golf Club. Since 1998, OCA golf players have met annually and will celebrate 20 years this year when they meet in August. Interest was revived in November 1995 with a reunion of school entrants from 1955. Knowledge of this event triggered action by the last OCA Treasurer, Michael Stanton, who was concerned that the PJ Smith memorial fund was still accruing interest. In February 1996 a meeting was held to decide on the Association’s future. The many past members who attended

overwhelmingly supported the continuation of the OCA and an AGM was held to form a constitution and new committee. Further memorial funds were set up in memory of Miss Dorothy King (English) and Mr. Alan Bream (Languages) and are still awarded annually to outstanding year 11 pupils at the school’s prize giving evenings. Similar funds have since been set up for Mr. Frank Applegate (Science) and Mrs. Barbara Bream (Art). At this time the Association was supported by the new Headmaster, Clive Moore, who, as a former History teacher, was very interested in the history of the school, which now took 11 to 16 years pupils with a sixth form planned. He introduced OCA representation on the School Governors Board. Many Reunions have been held over the years, some for small groups and a few open to all OCA members. There was a grand one at the school in 1996 and for the Jubilee celebrations in 1998, a concert was held in the school hall with a large number of Old Chingfordians taking part. In 2008 a Grand Reunion was held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the school, attended by former staff and many past pupils from across the years. HIGHAMS PARK ARC (ARTS & CULTURE) TRAIL 2018 Kicking off on Friday 11th May with a launch night at The Function Room, the ARC Trail will run until Sunday 20th May. The week will consist of events, exhibitions, workshops, music and pop-up food events across Highams Park. The ARC Trail is funded by The Highams Park Planning Group. Miniature Steam Train Rides in Chingford's Ridgeway Park Every Sunday & Bank Holiday afternoon from 2pm to 5:30pm during the summer (April until October) train rides are available at 50p or ÂŁ1 depending on the track (1000 foot long 5" raised level track and a 3000 foot long 7Âź" ground level track). During late July and August (school holidays), rides are also available on Wednesday afternoons 2:00pm - 4:30pm. Private hire events can also be arranged.
