elcome to the March/April edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill.

I buy my clothes the moment that they go out of fashion. Likewise, I recently took up a form of social media that is past its heyday.

I reminded myself of that first day in the playground at primary school, my mum waiting at the gate, hoping I’d make a friend. That evening, Father was gracious. “Friendship,” he said, “Is fleeting at best.”

This was not much help to a five-year-old, but I was stoical, and, in due course, made friends (two of them, not to brag).

Now, as a grown-up on social media, I waited for someone to like my Tweet. Days passed. My solitary post began to look sad. Then someone liked me. I ran around the room whooping. It seemed to matter more than either of my real-life friends, and yet it was someone I’d never know. But maybe that’s the charm: new friends that I never need meet. I’m waiting for my first troll now. And, by the way, I already know that I’m fat and old, thanks.

T

here are many awards, in this confused era, for things that are bad. There are awards for bad films, bad books, bad descriptions of you-know-what in books, bad buildings.

There are no awards that I know of (yet) for bad articles in local magazines, but I live in hope and strive ceaselessly towards that elusive goal. I am indeed the proud author of some very poor articles that deserve some sort of award.

In 2015, the Carbuncle Cup, which is awarded to the worst new building of the year, went to 20 Fenchurch Street, which is known to most locals as the Walkie-Talkie building, proudly taking its place in the City of London alongside many other buildings with similar household designations, such as The Cheese-Grater and The Gherkin. I’m no architect. From an early age, I displayed a startling ineptitude with my toy building blocks, although my 3-brick-wall/tower caused quite a stir at primary school. But, with computers and a homeware catalogue, I’m fairly sure that I could rustle up a Kettle or a Can-Opener, if any property developers are interested.

Why did the Walkie-Talkie win the Cup? A few things. Firstly, a lot of people found it very ugly indeed with its top floors swelling out to capitalise on the higher rent that higher storeys can command. Then there was the flare, when the building acted as a mirror, focussing sunbeams to create a temperature of 90C, melting the bodywork of parked cars. On the plus side, someone fried an egg in a pan on the ground.

Oh, and there was the wind tunnel effect that it caused in surrounding streets.

20 Fenchurch Street made the claim that it housed, on its 34th floor, London’s highest public park, known as the Sky Garden. This claim was undermined slightly when someone pointed out

that it was neither public, nor a park. But, in its defence, it is very high.

And herein lies its redeeming feature. At 525 feet tall, it’s the sixth tallest building in the City.

It was meant to be taller, but planners worried that this would be detrimental to views of Saint Pauls. This is a bit like saying that I only dug ten latrines in my garden as eleven would have been an eyesore. Nevertheless, it’s tall. Very tall. Its top floor is open to the public, with restrictions, through advance booking. Up here, across three further floors, are a bar, restaurants and an open viewing deck on the south face. Throughout these facilities are planted the flowers and shrubs that count as the Sky Garden.

Now, in my clumsy attempt to write an awardwinning bad article, I may have come over a tad negative. I recently rocketed up in the amazing lift to the Sky Garden and made my way out to the viewing area, high above the City. Below us, the hardy tourists who had climbed The Monument gazed up at us like mountaineers who labour up to Base Camp, only to see Everest in the distance. The Thames is seen in its crazy curves around the Isle of Dogs, under Tower Bridge, then weaving to and fro beneath the London Eye. The other towers of the City crowd around and one feels oneself in the presence of a freaky basketball team, but only by standing on someone else’s shoulders.

The historic parts of London can look very small from up here, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, crouched beneath taller towers, towers without capital letters, but towering towers all the same. Narrow streets carve their way through the scene below in random rivulets of restless tarmac.

With the umpteen reservations listed above, and the warning not to expect the Sky Garden to be a horticultural awakening, I would recommend a visit. It gave me the chance to look down on everyone and everything. I’m good at looking down on everyone. If only there were an award for that.
