elcome to the March/April edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park.

I buy my clothes the moment that they go out of fashion. Likewise, I recently took up a form of social media that is past its heyday.

I reminded myself of that first day in the playground at primary school, my mum waiting at the gate, hoping I’d make a friend. That evening, Father was gracious. “Friendship,” he said, “Is fleeting at best.”

This was not much help to a five-year-old, but I was stoical, and, in due course, made friends (two of them, not to brag).

Now, as a grown-up on social media, I waited for someone to like my Tweet. Days passed. My solitary post began to look sad. Then someone liked me. I ran around the room whooping. It seemed to matter more than either of my real-life friends, and yet it was someone I’d never know. But maybe that’s the charm: new friends that I never need meet. I’m waiting for my first troll now. And, by the way, I already know that I’m fat and old, thanks.

T

here are many awards, in this confused era, for things that are bad. There are awards for bad films, bad books, bad descriptions of you-know-what in books, bad buildings.

There are no awards that I know of (yet) for bad articles in local magazines, but I live in hope and strive ceaselessly towards that elusive goal. I am indeed the proud author of some very poor articles that deserve some sort of award.

In 2015, the Carbuncle Cup, which is awarded to the worst new building of the year, went to 20 Fenchurch Street, which is known to most locals as the Walkie-Talkie building, proudly taking its place in the City of London alongside many other buildings with similar household designations, such as The Cheese-Grater and The Gherkin. I’m no architect. From an early age, I displayed a startling ineptitude with my toy building blocks, although my 3-brick-wall/tower caused quite a stir at primary school. But, with computers and a homeware catalogue, I’m fairly sure that I could rustle up a Kettle or a Can-Opener, if any property developers are interested.

Why did the Walkie-Talkie win the Cup? A few things. Firstly, a lot of people found it very ugly indeed with its top floors swelling out to capitalise on the higher rent that higher storeys can command. Then there was the flare, when the building acted as a mirror, focussing sunbeams to create a temperature of 90C, melting the bodywork of parked cars. On the plus side, someone fried an egg in a pan on the ground.

Oh, and there was the wind tunnel effect that it caused in surrounding streets.

20 Fenchurch Street made the claim that it housed, on its 34th floor, London’s highest public park, known as the Sky Garden. This claim was undermined slightly when someone pointed out

that it was neither public, nor a park. But, in its defence, it is very high.

And herein lies its redeeming feature. At 525 feet tall, it’s the sixth tallest building in the City.

It was meant to be taller, but planners worried that this would be detrimental to views of Saint Pauls. This is a bit like saying that I only dug ten latrines in my garden as eleven would have been an eyesore. Nevertheless, it’s tall. Very tall. Its top floor is open to the public, with restrictions, through advance booking. Up here, across three further floors, are a bar, restaurants and an open viewing deck on the south face. Throughout these facilities are planted the flowers and shrubs that count as the Sky Garden.

Now, in my clumsy attempt to write an awardwinning bad article, I may have come over a tad negative. I recently rocketed up in the amazing lift to the Sky Garden and made my way out to the viewing area, high above the City. Below us, the hardy tourists who had climbed The Monument gazed up at us like mountaineers who labour up to Base Camp, only to see Everest in the distance. The Thames is seen in its crazy curves around the Isle of Dogs, under Tower Bridge, then weaving to and fro beneath the London Eye. The other towers of the City crowd around and one feels oneself in the presence of a freaky basketball team, but only by standing on someone else’s shoulders.

The historic parts of London can look very small from up here, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, crouched beneath taller towers, towers without capital letters, but towering towers all the same. Narrow streets carve their way through the scene below in random rivulets of restless tarmac.

With the umpteen reservations listed above, and the warning not to expect the Sky Garden to be a horticultural awakening, I would recommend a visit. It gave me the chance to look down on everyone and everything. I’m good at looking down on everyone. If only there were an award for that.

COULD YOU BE AN ISA MILLIONAIRE? Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) are a great way to invest free of tax on the income and any capital gains.

The amount you can put in each year has gradually increased. A growing number of people are becoming ‘ISA millionaires’ as a result of rising stock market prices, and the steady increase in the annual ISA allowance.

GENEROUS ANNUAL LIMITS The allowance for the 2017-18 tax year is set at £20,000, meaning that couples can put away up to £40,000. Sadly, it seems that the ISA message hasn’t filtered through to everyone. HMRC has produced data that shows only two thirds of those earning more than £150,000 a year use up their ISA allowance each year.

With pension contributions subject to annual and lifetime limits, ISAs represent an excellent way of topping up retirement income, although the cash or shares could be subject to inheritance tax on death, unlike the types of pension that can be passed on to beneficiaries more tax-efficiently.

MAKING IT TO A MILLION If you were able to invest your full ISA allowance in a stocks and shares ISA every year, the ISA limit increased

by around 2% each year, and your investments made an annualised return of 5% after fees, you too could join the elite band of ISA millionaires in 22 years (purely an example for illustrative purposes). Of course, we must underline that this is not guaranteed, because stock markets can and do go down as well as up.

PLANNING FOR YOUR FUTURE If you’re planning to invest this tax year, it’s a good idea to put plans in place as early as possible. The longer your money is invested, the more time it has to produce tax-free returns.

Award Winning Leaders Community launch a FREE Performing Arts School at The Big Creative Academy, Walthamstow E17

re you looking for an affordable, fun way to inspire your children and young people aged between 7-18 years old, to get active, engaged and to take an active role in the community? Leaders Community have the answer.

Leaders are an award winning not for profit organisation based in Waltham Forest that was set up to deliver Socially Inclusive initiatives that support the health and well being of children and young people .

All their initiatives are designed to help children and young people get active, develop their vocational talent, social skills, confidence, academic achievements and capacity as contributing members of their community through the creative arts.

Leaders continue to demonstrate that by empowering learners to build their confidence they become positive leaders and role models through engagement, enabling them to gain new experiences, support their personal development, build their character and help them succeed in the future. All their programs connect learners to caring adults through quality activities and mentoring which offer a safe and nurturing environment. Community cohesion is one of their priorities so all their programs are socially inclusive, all abilities are also welcomed.

Project Lead Maria comments “There is very little access to affordable quality activities relevant to the lifestyles of children and young people, especially for those who are not sports superstars and lack the motivation to get active and fit, but through our commercial street dance

programs we have seen high increased levels of engagement through out the borough. Commercial Street Dance is an alternative physical activity which is also a form of social dancing and the outcomes of engagement are the same as they would be if a participant was engaging in a sporting activity. We are always invited to perform at community borough events and shows which give our learners the opportunity to get involved in their community as proud contributing residents!”

Leaders Community continue to be recognised for their work with children and young people through various nominations and awards received from Waltham Forests’ Feel Good Sports Awards, The Cultural Stars Awards, the Love your Borough Awards and The Jack Petchey Foundation.

With thanks to funding received from Karen Bellamy, CEO of The LVE Charitable Foundation based in Leyton, in partnership with Sacha Corcoran The Big Creative Academy, Leaders are pleased to share that they are delivering a free performing arts school for children and young people on Saturdays providing young residents from 8 boroughs free access for 10 weeks to Singing with Drama or Singing with Commercial Street Dance at the Big Creative Academy, Clifton Avenue, E17 6HL. Karen Bellamy is a frequent visitor to the program who is a great supporter of culture in the borough and comments “We are so pleased to be funding such an amazing project. Leaders has something special, something extra. All the staff give their heart to this project, especially Maria, whose drive and determination is unrivalled - you feel that something special when you visit the classes and you feel it at break time in the common room where all participants congregate to socialise and have a snack. It's like being in the middle of a very large very noisy family and its wonderful!”

Although this program is free to young residents, the quality of teaching matches that of London’s most famous Musical Theatre Schools. All instructors work with global brands such as MTV, ITV, X Factor, UEFA, Disney, The Brits, Sky and leading music artists from around the world.

To qualify for a place you must be aged 7-18 years and residing in Waltham Forest, Haringey, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Redbridge, Barking & Dagenham, Newham or Havering. The next intake for applicants to start is 5th May 2018.

However, if you want to get involved sooner, Leaders also offer additional opportunities in commercial street dance sessions on Wednesdays in Higham Hill for children aged 7-11 years at the Higham Hill Hub in Higham Hill Park, E17, from 4.15-5.15pm or Fridays at The Peabody Paradox Centre 3 Ching Way, Chingford, E4

from 4-6.30pm for children and young people aged 7-18 years. These opportunities are fee based at £13 per month per learner as they too are subsidised by grant giving organisations.

Miniature Steam Train Rides in Chingford's Ridgeway Park Every Sunday & Bank Holiday afternoon from 2pm to 5:30pm during the summer (April until October) train rides are available at 50p or £1 depending on the track (1000 foot long 5" raised level track and a 3000 foot long 7¼" ground level track).

During late July and August (school holidays), rides are also available on Wednesday afternoons 2:00pm - 4:30pm. Private hire events can also be arranged.
